Pitcher Chris Young, of the San Diego Padres, had the most frightening, and painful, moment of his career when he was smashed in the face by a line drive from a St. Louis Cardinal's batter. Miraculously, Young escaped with only a broken nose.

And the big deal here is??????

In my much younger years I had been nailed in the nose when playing both baseball and softball. It hurts, you bleed, you bruise , you get on with life..

I guess when you get paid a couple million a year that makes it news worthy? No one cares if this happens to a regular person.

Back in the 90s I was at a minor league game and in the middle innings four batters aimed line drives right back at the pitcher. An ex-minor league player sitting next to me said that's what they do when the other team figures out that a pitcher's not wearing a cup.

Because someone has to say it.

Seems like he had some time (0.6 secs, that's an hour when you're in danger) to move his body in anticipation of the coming hit. A college or high school player wouldn't have hit by a ball that slow and telegraphed.

Glad it was only a broken nose, but if pitchers completed their motions in the proper fielding position, they could better protect themselves from line drives through the middle. Watch Greg Maddux pitch. He would have caught Pujols' liner and doubled off any runners who had strayed too far from a base.

Unfortunately, fundamentals like that don't seem to be stressed anymore.

Not to be picky, but I wouldn't call it a screaming line drive. Look at the batter's hands and body position- it looks like he was slapping at a breaking ball, connecting with the end of the bat.

not to be picky but I'd like a major league batter to hit a ball right into the middle of your face

Not to be picky, but I'd like to see you get a hit off of a major league pitcher.

Did you notice how the reporter transitioned to the

Reminds me of seeing Danny Bautista get hit right in the face with a fast ball when he was playing for the Braves. Blood spewed and I thought he was really hurt bad. He also had only a broken nose. But I did wonder how he would ever get back in the batter's box. Of course, these guys are tough and he did.
