WASHINGTON — Cindy McCain, who two weeks ago said she would never make her tax returns public, revealed Friday that she had a total income of more than $6 million in 2006.

The presidential campaign of her husband, Republican John McCain, released the top two summary pages of her 2006 tax return, eager to avoid making her earlier refusal an issue in the contest.

The documents show that Mrs. McCain, who files her taxes separately from her husband, paid more than $1.7 million in federal income taxes _ a tax rate of more than 28 percent. She reported nearly $570,000 in itemized deductions.

McCain's campaign said she had received an extension on her 2007 tax returns and aides said it is likely she would make those public when they are filed.

The Arizona senator released his own tax return last month, reporting a total income of $405,409 in 2007 and $84,460 in federal income taxes.

McCain's two Democratic rivals _ Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton _ released information about their taxes earlier. Both Obama and Clinton file their taxes jointly with their spouses, offering more detail of each family's wealth and income.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported making $4.2 million in 2007, while the Clintons reported $20.4 million in income.

Confined to only the summary pages, her released returns offer limited information. She listed $4.5 million in income from a broad category that includes rental real estate, royalties, partnerships and trusts. She also reported nearly $300,000 in salary income, more than $280,000 in dividends, and more than $740,000 in capital gains.

Heiress to a large Arizona beer distributorship, Cindy McCain's worth has been estimated at more than $100 million. Her assets, as listed in McCain's personal financial disclosure, are vast. But presidential and senatorial financial disclosures only require assets to be listed in broad ranges, and many of hers are valued at simply "over $1 million."

Last week, she sold off more than $2 million in mutual funds whose holdings include companies that do business in Sudan. John McCain has been a critic of the violence in that African nation.

Aides said that disclosing only the summary pages had precedent, pointing to tax information made public in 2003 by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

In an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on May 8, Cindy McCain said she had no intention of making her returns public.

"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate," Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain, said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.

Asked if she would release her tax returns if she were first lady, she said: "No."

Her response brought a prompt demand from Democrats for the McCains to be more open about their finances. Obama and Clinton have released tax information dating back to 2000. The Clintons also released their tax returns while Bill Clinton was president.

The McCain's have been much more limited in their disclosures.

"It is laughable for the campaign to release so little information and say they are being transparent," said Karen Finney, the communications director for the Democratic National Committee. "This is another indication that John McCain is not serious when he says he wants to run a transparent campaign, and a disturbing sign that a vote for John McCain is a vote for four more years of secrecy."

Ah, libs.

They bitch when she does not release her tax returns

They bitch when she does release her tax returns.

Seems their motive is, well, to bitch.

Sad.

Blah Blah Blah....why is this any type of an issue. The Obamas made 4.2 MILLION in 06 and the Clintons made over 20 MILLION. Why is Cindy McCain's 6M an issue?

Oh, perhaps because the Obama's and Clinton's aren't the ones who arrogantly declared they would never reveal their tax returns. Perhaps because they aren't the ones calling everyone under the sun "elitist". Perhaps because the ones calling everyone else "elitist" own EIGHT homes. Perhaps because when Teresa Heinz Kerry said she wouldn't release her returns, all hell exploded on the Kerrys until she did.

The reupublicons never want the same standards applied to them that they hurl at the Democrats. Period.

She has the right to remain private, but that's not the point. If you read below, your fellow idiot liberals have inferred that she is a dishonest drug dealer...why? It's okay for the libs (actors, trial attys, etc.) to make MEGA bucks...but when someone actually does something and provides someone with a legitimate product or service (i.e. beer or even oil) somehow you people comdemn them for making money at it. You seem to hate the idea of capitalism which our country was founded on. Maybe you should head over to one of the nicer places to live....maybe Russia? or China?....

Maybe the rest of her returns would show that her investments are in ventures that her "toy-boy" lobbyists helped set up. Make no mistake about it, these two are up to their eyeballs in dirty deals. He made money from the "Keating Five" scandal, and makes money today from "doners". Why do they have seperate tax returns? What is hidden in the rest of her returns? Why would a "100% disabled pension" recipient want to run for office of president? Why not just retire, and enjoy what is left of life? His kissing up to Georgie is a complete turn off. Is he being blackmailed to run for office, even knowing the only way he would win would be a repeat of Georgie's dirty tricks? Anyone who insulted my family the way Rove/Bush did McCain's would never get within touching distance of me.

Colmore Hi!
Tell me, how is it really in the UK now?
Is Brown really on the way out?
What on earth is the country going to do with the conservatives, who have
never had any idea how to balance the budget?
I fear for my adopted country, I really do.

Because she not only did not "make" the money, the money she inherited
is mob money. Wake up.

And $20 mill to Cindy is candy money. $4.2? Oh please.

She made her money as a drug dealer.. Legal or not. Alcohol is a drug. Just like the So called Esteemed members of the Kennedy family, thanks to Joe. I hope the she and her trophy husband live well. I know a few trophy husbands and they are sociopaths. It is a common trait. So worship you stupid Americans.

Stupid? Read your own post before hitting the "post a comment" button.

- Alcohol is legal

- The Kennedy's were trafficking in alcohol when it was prohibited

The remainder of you blather isn't a worth comment.

Actually, Nora Ephron would disagree with you. Here's an excerpt from one of her books:

I’ll tell you something else I know that no one else does: Joe Kennedy was not a bootlegger. When Prohibition was ending, he made a deal to import White Horse Scotch into the United States, but he had nothing whatsoever to do with the illegal liquor business before that. I can’t tell you how many people I have told this to, some of them very important, and yet the myth persists. All sorts of biographers and journalists casually insist that Kennedy was a partner of Frank Costello and Al Capone during Prohibition. It’s so not true! And I happen to be an expert on the subject — I spent several years of my life researching a book on the American liquor industry. I finally came to my senses and never wrote it and even returned the advance to the publisher (for which I deserve a plaque). But I’m left with a huge amount of information on the subject, most of it only moderately interesting, including this important fact about Joe Kennedy that no one seems to care about but me. Frankly, I’m not even sure his own family cares. How ironic is that?

Same with Cindy's family. Exactly the same. Except they also got into horse racing, gambling and prostitution.

The remainder of your blather.

Since when is it a bad thing to make millions of dollars? Oh, only to the left wing do nothings but live off of the people like Cindy McCain. J ust think if she didn't make all that money then the people that mooch off the government would have nothing. Instead of just keep doing nothing

Congratulations, "Marthamay"!
You've just won the Most Ignorant Statement of the Week Award!

Cindy McCain has not "made" millions of dollars. It was left to her by her father, the beer distributor. In other words, she's "mooching" off her father.

Sincerely,

A Leftwing Worker

You're wrong. She invests very well and has holdings in many real estate ventures. You can't penalize anyone for making money or for even having money...especiall when they do GOOD things with it like she does.

How did her family accumulate such wealth from beer distributing? Not to say beer distributing isn't lucrative, but something doesn't compute here.

My, My, poor Mrs. McCain has only a little over 4 million to live on in the 2006 tax year. I am almost sure she earned that amount working furiously at a job that requires physical back breaking labor while an overseer stood over her cracking the whip. And to think that there are some people who want to revoke her death tax which if not revoked would be inherited by her heirs who did not turn a hair in earning it.

I think you are underestimating her involvement in the beer business. I think she picks the hops and also drives a delivery truck.

No one cares how much she made in 2006. People want to know if she has any ties to anyone that might be questionable. Unless those "summaries" reveal that information in detail, they are a joke.

SwingingFromCenter

Judge lest not ye be judged, that's a line that people tend to use, no?

I find it really ironic that it's the same bleeding heart liberals who classify drug addiction as a disease and push for money to fund treatment will sit here and get on their soapbox and judge Cindy simply for the same thing. I guess compassion only applies if it's someone that is married to a person you like.

Funny thing about Dems--they're just as hypocritical as Republicans.

**************************************************************************

Yeah... you can just bet that Cindy Mc"Shame was feeling *Pretty Proud* of herself and her country when she had plenty of *Liberal* access to all those prescription drugs she was stealing from people who really needed them.

I find your giving her a pass simply repulsive SwingingFromCenter since she never even apologized for her misdeeds.

But the right-wing step-ford wife was quick to pounce Mrs. Obama for an obvious mis-statement.

Clowns like you really do amaze me when you try to have it both ways..

Bullsh*t. She stole for that habit and got off on probation when the average thief would have done time for forgery and thievery. Her adultery is right up there with Clinton's.
No cigar.
