Formal Talks

*** UPDATES BELOW ***

The punditry is abuzz after a report on CNN this morning that Clinton and Obama have held formal talks about her exit from the race, with Clinton outlining three possible scenarios. Bloomberg reports:

The two Democratic campaigns are talking about ways for Clinton, from New York, to drop her bid for president that may include joining the Illinois senator's ticket, CNN reported. Talks are in a "very preliminary" stage and are described as "difficult,'" the network said.

However, the revelation from CNN cites only anonymous sources. And an interview with David Axelrod on Thursday claimed that talks had not begun between the campaigns:

The chief strategist for the Obama campaign, David Axelrod, said Thursday that no overtures had been made by Mr. Clinton or any prominent supporters to place Mrs. Clinton on the ticket.

"There have been no contacts between the campaigns, and no one is looking for a deal of any kind," Mr. Axelrod said in an interview. "She's running for the nomination for president, as we are. We're focusing on closing out the nominating fight. We'll deal with vice presidential questions in sequence."

Talking Points Memo suggests that even if the report is overstating conversations between the campaigns, the disclosure of Clinton-Obama talks is significant:

On first blush I'm skeptical that there really are "formal talks" in the usual sense of that phrase. The report appears to lean heavily on sourcing from within the Clinton camp, which is notable. The significance here may not be that there are formal talks underway or that the vice presidency is under discussion. The real significance may be that this is the opening salvo from the Clinton camp ahead of the negotiations that would likely accompany her withdrawal from the race.

[Watch the report]

Several Clinton supporters, including Bill Clinton and Sen. Diane Feinstein, have been pushing for Clinton to join an Obama ticket.

UPDATE: Suzanne Malveaux, the CNN correspondent who originally reported the talks, appeared on CNN to walk back her initial report slightly. She now suggests the talks between the camps are informal (as opposed to formal), and are primarily motivated by Clinton supporters. She still stands by the claim that the camps are in communication about a possible endgame. Take the distinction for what you will.

UPDATE: Well, if these talks are in fact taking place, then neither camp is fessing up about it. Greg Sargent reports on Election Central:

Well, I've just spoken to both campaigns about this. And their denials couldn't be more adamant.

Here's what Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson sent me:

1) There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign
2) The only scenario being discussed by this campaign is Senator Clinton's nomination as President
3) The report is 100% false

And here is what Obama spokesperson Bill Burton said:

"This is something that I agree with Howard on 100%."

Find the door.

Turn the handle.

Walk through it (and don't let it hit you on the way out)...

Why does this concept require a discussion, especially in light of her recent and fatal error?????

She's in no position now to demand anything. She's over. If the super delegates don't end this over the weekend, then we don't live in the real world.

"Clinton/Obama Camps Discussing Exit Scenarios"

Right. We know what her exit scenario for HIM is now, don't we.

Hold on wait a minute! There is no more of a die hard Obama supporter and Clintonite hunter then myself. As insensitive and disturbing as Chillery Clinton's comment may be, I truly believe that Mcsillery was merely making reference to the fact that the late great Bobby Kennedy was still campaigning in June, it obviously just came out all wrong. As desperate and underhanded as her politics may be, I don't want to believe that she is just a profoundly evil person. It's very sad that political ambitions and desire to win the White House would drive her to behave in the way that she throughout this campaign hence causing her observers to believe that she could actually mean what could reasonably interpreted as I'm staying in the race in case Obama were to be assassinated Kennedy. It leaves a bitter feeling on my finger tips writing words in her defense, but I try to be fair minded. Her comments were nothing more than a sad, unfortunate gaff caused perhaps by frustration, fatigue or just unclear thinking. However, her apology was as usual short of the mark and seemingly insincere. These statements gaffs and blunders are obvious signs of a democratic primary lasting way longer then necessary. Super delegates, the respect, reputation and honor our illustrious party are in your hands, it'll be on your heads if democrats lose this historical election because of your indecisiveness. With that said, I must go wash the bitter feeling from my fingers now.

I'm a Black woman. Blacks have been scared Barack would get shot long before now. This is a huge slap in the face for all Barack supporters. I am stunned and pray they don't kill our hope.

Everybody knows that when you broadcast a lethal idea like this, it works its way into the brains of the unstable.

And everybody who follows the race knows that Barack already has a much tighter Secret Service detail than either Hillary or McCain.

While I certainly won't impugn hateful motives to her, she could not poasibly have said anything more irresponsible - and potentially more harmful. Surely she owes Barack and his family and honest and forthright apology - and it is past time for her to stop her destructive, divisive campaign.

Oh you are so very generous are you not. She thinks she can dictate and manipulate everyone and everything.

Barrack is way too smart for that. Why would he include her baggage.

YES! There is an "exit scenario" for Senator Clinton.

BECAUSE . . . RIGHT NOW!!!

Thousands of HuffPost posters and bloggers and Democrats and Independents and even Republicans are organizing an email campaign to overwhelm the inboxes of superdelegates with messages saying,

"As one of tens of millions of Americans - white, black, rich, poor, male, female, straight, gay, Republican and Democrat - I am writing you to DEMAND that you FORCE Senator Clinton out the presidential race NOW or LOSE MY VOTE in the next election. Period. Put another way, you have 24 hours to endorse Senator Obama or likely forfeit your Congressional seat."

KNOW that, even given this brutal push (begun literally THIS AFTERNOON), Senator Clinton will fight, scratch, kick, scream and wail on her way out the door.

BUT GO SHE WILL . . .

NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Hillary wants to be considered for VP, someone needs to put a muzzle on her. I thought she said last week that she would not do anything to "embarrass" the party...ooops.

Who would want her to be VP after her horrible remarks - Hillary is always very calculated and an expert politician - she meant what she said, and said it before in a Time interview

http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/05/hillarys_bizarre_rfk_comment.html

wishful thinking? does she really want it bad enough to sell her soul? She was not thinking of the Kennedys back in March.

I wonder if that rumor about Obama telling Clinton she would not be his running mate is true. That could explain why she seems to have gone bonkers this week: first comparing not including the Michigan and Florida votes to Zimbabwe and the Civil Rights movement, and now all but admitting she hopes Obama gets knocked off. I used to think HIllary was like a child deprived of her favorite toy, now I think the problem is a little more serious.

She's already demonstrably irresponsible with the power she does have as a candidate and public figure, with these intimations of murder. How am I supposed to imagine her as some calm, even keeled steward of our highest ideals when she's already completely lost composure and betrayed those ideals?

Please, an HRC supporter out there, explain this stuff away for me... please...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:28 PM on 05/23/2008

I am an HRC supporter - this is pure politics at the end of a long and increasingly bloody race from both camps. Hillary was making a point of why she should stay in. She wasn't thinking about how it could be misinterpreted or underestimated the MSM's microscopic precision in pulling ANYTHING she says that could possibly be spun as negative.

This was a tiny interview with the editorial board of the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader. Do you think you would EVER see footage of her blabbing on to an editorial board in South Dakota unless there was something inflammatory they could pick out of it which they could run it up the flagpole to see who salutes? Stop saluting!

Within hours HRC apologized, just like Obama had to for "Bittergate" which was equally absurd.

I know more than a few Republicans (and evangelicals) who are very unhappy with what the
GOP has become under the reign of the neocons. They are willing to vote for Obama. They would never vote for Hillary and having her on the ticket even as a VP would not help in getting crossover GOP/conservative/independent voters.

And if I were President Obama, I would not want to have her as my VP. I think she would be pretty high maintenance and not necessarily the most loyal person to him. And quite frankly, some of the things she has said during this campaign, including today's comments, call her judgement under pressure into serious question.

There are plenty of other qualified Dems, including women, who don't have her baggage and who could fill that spot.

I completely agree... I am an INDY and bc I usually hate both sides candidate's, I don't vote mainstream partys... NOT THIS YEAR! I am so proud to support Obama... he brings a refreshing sense of HOPE... and right now, thats what we desperately need....

BUT, with that said, I will not vote for him if he puts Hillary on the ticket for 2 reasons:
1) I have hated the woman for as long as I can imagine
2) she stands for the opposite of everything he stands for morally and ethically

NO HRC on the ticket...

I hate Hillary as much as any one here, and would not like to see her as Obama's running mate. But the fact is if she chooses to take a stand to have a final say in the selection of VP, she will get it, which could include proposing herself as a VP candidate. The strength that she has shown has earned her the bargaining position. Like it or not, we will just have to swallow it.

These are the same things I have come to terms with. Like it or not, she has fought the good fight and like it or not "they" will have to ask her. I hope the self righteous streak in her says, "NO", but she will definitely be asked.

'Fighting the good fight' is not a theme that has anything to do with Obama's campaign---despite the fact that basically her fight has not been 'good' at all; as her entire campaign is in shambles. Her manipulations, lies and flip flopping just won't work at all with a presidency the likes of Obama's.
If you can see the huge differences between these campaigns and the individual candidates, you can see that the 'nightmare ticket' just can't even be considered as a possibility.

She only gets to be his VP if she and Bill and Chelsea and Mark Penn are forced to serve as four sided human shields at every Obama public appearance... they deserve that

Yes all VP candidates should discuss the assasination of their potential running mates---it builds trust.

What they need to discuss is what time the train to hell is leaving and can hillary get a first class seat.

After the RFK assasination reference the only exit for Clinton is to have her ass drop kicked out of the race. Time for the Superdelegates to step up and put an end to this travesty.

I couldn't agree more, I was all for having her continue as long as she kept it civil (like prior to Kentucky), but this is it - she cannot undo this - she did not even apologize to Obama, she just said, sorry to the Kennedys and the rest of us are all taking it out of context.

Look, if Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson said that there were no discussions, this means the Hillary camp planted the story.

This is Howard's job. While he usually uses Drudge Report to dump "leaked" stories on, he has been known to dump "leaks" elsewhere - and he always denies the leaks on behalf of the campaign.

Bad, bad idea. Hillary brings nothing to the ticket except make the Republicans happy. They won't have to work at digging up stuff on Obama, they have filing cabinets full of stuff on the Clintons! It's is THEIR dream ticket.

She doesn't bring NY (NY is Democrat)
She doesn't bring women (women will see what a McCain presidency would mean and won't vote for him. The racist women will but they won't vote for him even if she is VP candidate)
She does bring Bill and the whole Clinton legacy. Remember that - the Republicans haven't forgotten and they won't be as careful about bringing it up.

It is a poor choice and there are so many good choices. She has lost! He doesn't need her - he needs the Supers and the DNC to protect the party against the Clintons. Get to it Supers and DNC!
