Formal Talks

*** UPDATES BELOW ***

The punditry is abuzz after a report on CNN this morning that Clinton and Obama have held formal talks about her exit from the race, with Clinton outlining three possible scenarios. Bloomberg reports:

The two Democratic campaigns are talking about ways for Clinton, from New York, to drop her bid for president that may include joining the Illinois senator's ticket, CNN reported. Talks are in a "very preliminary" stage and are described as "difficult,'" the network said.

However, the revelation from CNN cites only anonymous sources. And an interview with David Axelrod on Thursday claimed that talks had not begun between the campaigns:

The chief strategist for the Obama campaign, David Axelrod, said Thursday that no overtures had been made by Mr. Clinton or any prominent supporters to place Mrs. Clinton on the ticket.

"There have been no contacts between the campaigns, and no one is looking for a deal of any kind," Mr. Axelrod said in an interview. "She's running for the nomination for president, as we are. We're focusing on closing out the nominating fight. We'll deal with vice presidential questions in sequence."

Talking Points Memo suggests that even if the report is overstating conversations between the campaigns, the disclosure of Clinton-Obama talks is significant:

On first blush I'm skeptical that there really are "formal talks" in the usual sense of that phrase. The report appears to lean heavily on sourcing from within the Clinton camp, which is notable. The significance here may not be that there are formal talks underway or that the vice presidency is under discussion. The real significance may be that this is the opening salvo from the Clinton camp ahead of the negotiations that would likely accompany her withdrawal from the race.

[Watch the report]

Several Clinton supporters, including Bill Clinton and Sen. Diane Feinstein, have been pushing for Clinton to join an Obama ticket.

UPDATE: Suzanne Malveaux, the CNN correspondent who originally reported the talks, appeared on CNN to walk back her initial report slightly. She now suggests the talks between the camps are informal (as opposed to formal), and are primarily motivated by Clinton supporters. She still stands by the claim that the camps are in communication about a possible endgame. Take the distinction for what you will.

UPDATE: Well, if these talks are in fact taking place, then neither camp is fessing up about it. Greg Sargent reports on Election Central:

Well, I've just spoken to both campaigns about this. And their denials couldn't be more adamant.

Here's what Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson sent me:

1) There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign
2) The only scenario being discussed by this campaign is Senator Clinton's nomination as President
3) The report is 100% false

And here is what Obama spokesperson Bill Burton said:

"This is something that I agree with Howard on 100%."

Hillary has shown quite clearly that she will break rules in order to win the nomination. She DID sign on to the agreement with the DNC that she would not campaign in MI and FL. She did not care one bit about the voters in FL and MI until she lost the chance for the nomination. She was completely silent about them until she needed to break the DNC's rules she had agreed on in order to keep in the race.

If Hillary is willing to break the rules to steal the nomination from Obama, she'll do anything to get into the president's office if she is VP. ANYTHING. She has already shown that rules do not matter (unless they help her case.)

Obama will need to wear a bullet-proof vest, even to bed. He will need food tasters every time he eats. He will need to ensure that the mechanics working on the W.H. Limo and on Air Force One are loyal to him and not the Clintons.

Why go through that hassle? Get someone else for a running mate. Avoiding problems in the beginning is better than trying to clean up a problem afterward.

That is a truly sick statement, regardless of the context, it should not have been said. Perhaps it is wishful thinking?

This site cracks me up sometimes. How many of us on this board have run a successful campaign for President? How about for Senator, Congressman, Governor, State Senate, Mayor, City Councilman or even Dog Catcher? In my case, I can't lay claim to any of that. So, who are we to give emotional, and indignant advice to Obama about what he needs to do with respect to VP or cabinet choices? Suggestions yes. Threats and demands, no. I know it's a serious and critical election for our country, but no one knows how high the stakes are more than he and his demonstrably super smart political team.
How many bad decisions has he made in his life? Probably far less than you and I. You know we are all the Presidents of our own lives. Are you balancing your budget. establishing priorities, and controlling your expenditures? Would you vote for you?
I like the cat and want him to win. In fact, now that he and McCain are campaigning head to head, it's becoming quite obvious with every joust that McCain can't lay a glove on him. The Wright issue has been defused, and already is old news, and Michelle's "really proud of my country" remark occurred in Feb or March. If they' re brought up again in September, Americans will yawn. Relax. This is gonna be a landslide unless they can find pictures of Obama shooting up heroin with Flavor Flav.

I like your style and appreciate the advice to chill. But, I'm sure you'll forgive some of us who have been Clinton-watching for 20 years and understand our fear and loathing of their tactics. When a shovel will do, the Clintons use a backhoe. When a butter knife will do, the Clintons use a butcher knife. When their sense of entitlement is threatened, they call out their army. At this point, I'm not sure I can relax unless Barack has double the secret service detail and a restraining order against Hillary. hehe

Yeah, you're right, the Clintons take no prisoners. But they were were the hitmen we had to hire to stop the Republican juggernaut in the '90s. They were our Luca Brasi. Obama just has to retrain them. I wouldn't have a problem with an Obama/Clinton ticket if that came to pass. That would be a perfect good cop/bad cop team to deal with the neo-cons who are not going to go quietly into the night, but what do I know. The way I've lived my life the last five years, I need a change of presidential administration. I just can't find anybody else to run. I need change in my pocket I can believe in.

Ok, I don't know where to post this. I just heard on MNSBC David Shuster report a statement from Hillary Clinton regarding her staying in the race, in which she pointed out that RFK was assassination before he had a chance to win or something to that efffect. Anyone know anything. I can't believe she meant it as horrible as it sounds, but I would like to read the story. I hope Raw or Huffington post sit.

She might be doing more than that, though perhaps on a subconscious level. What she said is close to being an invitation for someone unstable who hates him and wants her to get the nomination, to shoot him. It really is. Even if she didn't mean it that way. But however she meant it, it shows she is really ill mentally.
They need to force her out today--- before the party goes down in history as the party that let a really ill person dictate to it, bully it, and virtually run it. Doesn't Dean understand how this makes the party look? For her to go wild and the party do nothing???

at this point nothing would surprise me about the Clintons, I don't normally dwell on conspiracy theories, but some of the stuff that have come up about these two and the number of people who have crossed them that have died, seems waaaayyy too many to be coincidental... it's scary, and makes you think why so many people are afraid to go against them.

Dean has been very quiet lately. I agree, Hillary's behavior makes us look like the party of wackos. The Democratic Party has always been a little disorganized, and that's been part of its charm. But giving this insane woman a forum for her vile statements is going a bit far.

Sen Obama woud be a fool to have Hillary as his VP. He wouldn't get my vote, and i would not vote for John McSame either, and Obama would lose the election because 50% of americans dislike Hillary.
After all Hillary has done Sen. Obama ,and has tried everything to embarrass him, and is spitefully prolonging the primaries, by making up different reasons each time as to why she wants to go on, of course, with one intention to continue to embarrase Sen. Obama that he can't win certain states - injecting race into the campaign - you have got to be kidding. Hillary is just too racist and divisive, and if he won, she is VP I just see her wheeling and dealing behind his back, and instructing him how to be President.
Secondly, it would be hell to have bot she and Bill Clinton all over the White House I would hope for Sen. Obama's sake, he would not succomb to any pressure to place Hillary on the ticket.
She would run him ragged, and possibly have him assassinated - she is that desperate to get into the White HOuse to be President.

Hillary is too despicible -- get rid of her.

Why should her gutter behavior be rewarded?

In fact, I hope she trashed herself so bad,

that her political career is over.

Because it should be.

We have so many good people--who needs her?

When is Huffington going to do a thread on it---they are usually very quick. God, I still can't quite believe it. What is that disease people get where they start saying and doing extremely inappropriate things? Whatever, she has just proved she is unfit for the White House. I am going to complain to the DNC about this that she has said, it will be my first complain to them. I've had enough.

And you wonder why so many Democrats now HATE Sen Clinton?

She has stooped to a NEW LOW, I really didnt think she would ever go there

http://www.nypost.com/seven/05232008/news/nationalnews/why_hill_wont_drop_out__bobby_kennedy_wa_112232.htm

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

So...we've moved from condoning racism to condoning assassination?

Really?

...I was just beginningt to think Hillary couldn't possibly become any more abhorrent as a human being and a candidate, but now I see that was undersetimating her severely. It's hard for those of us with morals and standards to imagine the depths to which those without them will sink.

If Senator Obama agreed to put Senator Clinton on the ticket he'd have to spend a lot of time the next 4 years watching his back. Is that really what anybody wants? As for helping to heal the party, it was Senator Clinton who worked so hard to divide it in the first place. I don't think it makes much sense to offer her the VP slot.

Hillary would like to be on the Obama ticket. She knows with her as VP nominee Obama would not beat McCain, then she could run again in four years for the position she needs to keep the Clintons shady deals active.
