Formal Talks

*** UPDATES BELOW ***

The punditry is abuzz after a report on CNN this morning that Clinton and Obama have held formal talks about her exit from the race, with Clinton outlining three possible scenarios. Bloomberg reports:

The two Democratic campaigns are talking about ways for Clinton, from New York, to drop her bid for president that may include joining the Illinois senator's ticket, CNN reported. Talks are in a "very preliminary" stage and are described as "difficult,'" the network said.

However, the revelation from CNN cites only anonymous sources. And an interview with David Axelrod on Thursday claimed that talks had not begun between the campaigns:

The chief strategist for the Obama campaign, David Axelrod, said Thursday that no overtures had been made by Mr. Clinton or any prominent supporters to place Mrs. Clinton on the ticket.

"There have been no contacts between the campaigns, and no one is looking for a deal of any kind," Mr. Axelrod said in an interview. "She's running for the nomination for president, as we are. We're focusing on closing out the nominating fight. We'll deal with vice presidential questions in sequence."

Talking Points Memo suggests that even if the report is overstating conversations between the campaigns, the disclosure of Clinton-Obama talks is significant:

On first blush I'm skeptical that there really are "formal talks" in the usual sense of that phrase. The report appears to lean heavily on sourcing from within the Clinton camp, which is notable. The significance here may not be that there are formal talks underway or that the vice presidency is under discussion. The real significance may be that this is the opening salvo from the Clinton camp ahead of the negotiations that would likely accompany her withdrawal from the race.

[Watch the report]

Several Clinton supporters, including Bill Clinton and Sen. Diane Feinstein, have been pushing for Clinton to join an Obama ticket.

Story continues below

UPDATE: Suzanne Malveaux, the CNN correspondent who originally reported the talks, appeared on CNN to walk back her initial report slightly. She now suggests the talks between the camps are informal (as opposed to formal), and are primarily motivated by Clinton supporters. She still stands by the claim that the camps are in communication about a possible endgame. Take the distinction for what you will.

UPDATE: Well, if these talks are in fact taking place, then neither camp is fessing up about it. Greg Sargent reports on Election Central:

Well, I've just spoken to both campaigns about this. And their denials couldn't be more adamant.

Here's what Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson sent me:

1) There have been no discussions with the Obama campaign
2) The only scenario being discussed by this campaign is Senator Clinton's nomination as President
3) The report is 100% false

And here is what Obama spokesperson Bill Burton said:

"This is something that I agree with Howard on 100%."

No. I don't want another "dynasty" in the White House. Period. I don't care if it's another Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, Roosevelt, or Reagan. Just stop. There's a reason for term limits.

Not having Hillary on the ticket is such a good thing. Repubs won't be able to use Obama & Hillarys attacks on each other against the dems in the general and Hillary doesn't do anything for his message of change. It would show that he won't be strong armed by the Clintons or anyone for that matter. Plus, after Obama wins the general, Bill and Hill wouldn't be breathing down Obamas neck in the white house...

IMO, a Hillary/Obama ticket may make Obama look like McCain and how he snuggled up to Bush after his people spread vile false rumors about his "illegitimate black daughter." I lost all respect for McCain after that.

I will not support a ticket with her on it. She has nothing to offer this country (unless your a lobbyist) and She is a danger and detriment to every good thing that Obama could accomplish.

Pay her debts and send her packing. She deserves a great deal LESS than that.

"I think that I have a lifetime of experience that I will bring to the White House. I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

GIVE HER NOTHING SHE DESERVES NOTHING SHE CAN NEVER MAKE UP FOR THIS, NEVER

I agree with you 100% and those words will forever live in my mind. She does not deserve a spot on the ticket. Maybe a cabinet post, but not VP!

Choosing Clinton unfortunately would be the true definition of "Appeasement" --

3. to yield or concede to the belligerent demands of (a nation, group, person, etc.) in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles.

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1).

I could not have said it better myself.

There are a lot of other progressives, male and female, that could strengthen the Obama ticket.

People are taking a great deal for granted. What are the odds that this is a Trojan horse and that the Clinton Campaign plans to take this to the convention? An ugly win is still a win. If she gets her expected big win in Puerto Rico, she will take the "popular vote" and Florida and Michigan delegate arguments to the convention. Who knows what the SD's will still do for the Clintons. They have everyone looking at her VP option, while her Presidential may run still be very much alive (on life support, but alive).

Every time the Dems have taken this process to the Convention, they have LOST the White House. Don't you think the Democratic leadership understands this? Don't you think Obama knows this?

Do we think Hillary cares???

It looks to me as if Hillary for VP has stronger negatives than Hillary for president.

Well, she can beat someone... but it is herself.

At least $15M + people have voted for Hillary. If they had to do all over again, after seeing her in action during the last month - who knows? But you cannot dismiss those who voted for her. That being said, I read that the only demographic that she is still beating Obama is among 50+ women (predominately white). If you're interested in polls check out RealClearPolitics.com.

BTW, I heard a woman on the Ed Schutz radio show ( Progressive Talk) yesterday say that the people in Appalachia are so poor that when they see Obama in his suit they think his suit cost more than they make in 4 months. Also she said the people are so poor all they have is "skin". They think no matter how bad off they are at least they are not "black". Check out hillbillyhousewives.comm.

I think that Obama will look weak if he puts Hillary on his ticket.

Everyone will know she bullied her way on and that he allowed it.

Look at how McCain lost everyone's respect when he let Bush insult him and then bully him into supporting him. It isn't the same situation at all, but I think the loss of respect will be the same.

Obama now leads Clinton by +12 Nationally in RCP average. WOW!

She is lucky that towards the end she has run into Puerto Rico, West Virginia and Kentucky.

Obama needs to give her nothing. He owes her nothing. Sooner Clintons are out of mind and out of sight, we can focus on real battle.

If he doesn't give her something, she may make an attempt to turn every single one of her supporters---millions of them---against him. And we could use them in the general election and after all they are Democrats. But Hillary will withhold them, if she can, if he tells her to get stuffed. I wish he would tell her that and have even called for him to do so, in posts, but that was before I remembered how many supporters she has. It's not as if she has only five or six, you know.
Still, I have serious doubts about the two sides uniting---Hillary has run such a polarizing campaign that many Obama supporters can't stand her and don't want her to get anything from Obama. Other than a kick in the butt on her way out the door. And many Hillary supporters just hate us.

LET HER!

There are going to be stupid people, selfish people, short-sighted people no matter what. You cannot get 100% of the voters. Ever.

It is wrong to give in to blackmail. Always. If you do, you find yourself paying more and more until you cannot pay any longer.

I've seen no indication that Hillary knows how to keep her ego in check. As the VP candidate, I fear she would constantly be trying to steal the spotlight from Obama, not to mention what her husband might do.

So, what do we do with her? I don't seem to be able to make a serious response to that question, other than feeling very strongly that she needs to stay as far away from Obama's campaign as possible.

The biggest danger for Obama if he picks Hillary as VP is, as some have said, her baggage, which the Republicans will go after. But there is more. When they do go after it, they will go after him too, they will say, "Is this the man you want for president? Look who he has picked as his VP. What kind of judgement does that show? And how can a man who wants change choose as his running mate someone of the old kind of politics? How inconsistent is that? So you have a man with poor judgement and inconsistent behavior, folks---not a good start for 2009."

Biggest Danger for Obama if he picks Hillary as VP is NOT her Baggage.

Biggest Danger would be a ton of that Baggage dropping over his head - LITERALLY.

You thought that the anti-Obama 24/7 newscycle went over the top with Rev. Wright? Fox News Channel would air HOUR LONG SPECIALS with this theme! Then let's talk about what Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck -- to name jsut a FEW would do with this on their own shows -- radio and television.
The ads that would be manufactured from these clips practically write themselves!
And there is no defense.
How would she answer the questions. "Well, obviously Senator Clinton you have changed your mind about Senator Obama. What has happened IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS (emphasis mine) to have caused that?"
Remember, this is a woman who refused to say this about her Iraq vote (for I don't know how long) , "If I had known then, what I know now, I would not have voted the way I did." That's not even an apology or 'flip-flopping' (a term I HATE, btw) , it's agreeing with the overwhelming majority of the American public who believe that we were LIED into this war.

As much as Hillary touted her "experience" and Obama's lack of it, wouldn't this be like the blind leading the deaf?
