Lou Dobbs Crumbles When Pressed On His 'NAFTA Super Highway' Myth

Last Wednesday, Media Matters Action Network issued a report, which found that cable news commentators Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck regularly "serve up a steady diet of fear, anger, and resentment on the topic of illegal immigration."

Last night on his CNN show, an edgy Lou Dobbs hosted Media Matters fellow Paul Waldman to discuss the report's finding. Waldman asked Dobbs to provide evidence of the "myth" he often promotes -- that there is a "secret plan" to build a "NAFTA Superhighway" from Mexico to Canada. Having trouble providing evidence, an exasperated Dobbs said finally, "You're charging nonsense." "I reject it, I reject you, and I reject your position," he angrily added. From the exchange:

It is quite easy to find out that the Super Corridor is FACT. Saying otherwise is like saying the moon is made of cheese and expecting others to believe it. But I guess that is the beauty of supporting Obama. One does NOT have to deal in facts, just wishful thinking and propoganda. Dobbs is quite right as many other posters have shown. It is Media matters that is wrong and a liar to boot.

I see that Media Matters which I like is WAY off base! It is NOT a myth by the way. It will possibly be taking MY Land! THAT is NO myth folks and YOU are idiots for saying so. Not only that, but the law has some features that most don't know about. The state will take the land as emminent domain. They will pay whatever they feel they want to. The landowners will have NO rights to take them to court to stop that. Then after the land is taken, they may some time in the future if they have the money, sue the state in court to get a better price. The usual mechanisms for determining the value are VOID in this case.
I have NO idea where you idiots get such ideas. Despite all the facts, and now many posts showing that DOBBS is right, you still insist that he is wrong. That only says that you live in some dream world and refuse to face facts. The only thing I can think of is that you are PART of the corporate greed and grab culture Dobbs has been fighting against.

Lou Dobbs' show is one that I will never watch again after I saw him treat an Hispanic female respresentative with distain - he is an evil angry man who is a snake in the grass - he thinks his condescending manner is cute - I think he is a want to be bully and he attempts to make himself appear to be informed and important - he's not that intelligent and his generalizations indicate how uninformed he is -

I find it hilarious that Dobbs asked his GUEST why he didn't call his network to request copies of the "evidence". Still didn't produce a document, however...

If you look up the Texas Department of Transportation website, you'll find info about this collusal waste of money and land. The State of Texas has parts of it built already and have several alternative routes mapped through Texas. They've been having public meetings, but everything is very low key. Most people in Texas, outside of the affected landowners don't know it's happening. Governor Rick Perry (Texas) has a big part in promoting this fiasco.

I'm no fan of Lou Dobbs, but he's right on this one. I usually work with Media Matters, but in this case they are completely wrong. Media Matters would do much more good by looking into Dobb's story and exposing who and what's behind it. The truth behind it is bonechilling and just more of an example of the rightwing and business interests literally rolling over the interests of everyone in this country who are not powerful enough to stop them.

To Media Matters: recheck your facts fast, because you're wrong and if you don't admit it soon, you'll lose your credibility with those of us who actually support you.

MY family has owned acres of land in East Texas for several generations now. Each generation has added to it and passed the ownership to the next generation. I am proud of the fact that my ancestors were able to succeed during a time when the US Government created Jim Crow laws designed to insure they failed. They loved America & they passed down their unconditional patriotism and their embracing of the American Dream to every generation that followed.

Now, almost a century and a half later, my generation will have to watch as everything we created is taken away. The State of Texas plans to use Eminent Domain to take large sections of our land in order to complete this Trans-Texas Corridor. Thousands of families will share in our fate.

It's not just the land. It's also about losing more American jobs as Cheap Mexican/S. American products flood across this highway..it's about preventing the increase in illegal Drug smuggling that will ravage every US city & town...stopping the increase in human smuggling and not allowing foreign Truck Drivers to roam unchecked within the US.

Every Family in the county is fighting this. please help us draw the line now, write to your congressmen & the Governor of Texas. Tell 'em : NO Trans-Texas Corridor !

I can't believe that our collective historical memory of even recent events is so poor. The NAFTA Superhighway is not a myth. The Nation reported on it in 2007:

There was a huge competition for the projected route through Texas for the NAFTA Superhighway continuing through two presidential administrations (Clinton then Bush). Gov. Rick Perry of Texas advocated this concept during his two terms in office and put together a group of investors to finance it. If Perry gets his way there will be bullet trains, toll roads, trucking routes, and an IT backbone replacing the existing public Interstate highway system in Texas -- all financed by foreign interests. No new taxes! That is the phrase that turned Texas from Yellow Dog to Red.

Did you read the entire article in The Nation to which you linked? Here is the pertinent quote...

"There's no such thing as a proposed NAFTA Superhighway."

If all you read was the beginning, you only read the myth, which was a lead-in to debunking the claim of a "NAFTA Superhighway."

I find it most disappointing that Huffington has NEVER given any coverage to the issue of the SPP or the NAFTA superhighway which is just one small part of it.

But once the clown Lou Dobbs could be connected to it, Huffpo had its opportunity to treat the SPP story with disdain and downplay it. So here we are, and the Blueonblue stooge has been here every step of the way, spinning and lying to help out.

Here is a link where a throne speech (similar to a State of the Nation speech here) in Canada openly talks of the highway, sorry Blue.
And the highway is the least disturbing component of this whole story.

I find it disappointing that huffpo has NEVER covered the SPP and the superhighway which is only a small part of it.
But now that the buffoon Lou Dobbs can be connected with this story, they "cover" this topic by attaching it to a loser like Dobbs.
This is because so many Democrats are fully on board with this thing, embarrassing.

The Blueonblue "commenter" seems extremely concerned with making sure that no one takes this seriously.

But the highway is the tip of the iceberg, and I urge everyone to google around the SPP issue. It hurts the people of Mexico, USA and Canada, while it helps huge corporations further evade responsibility or oversight.

Did any of you listen to the segment? Clearly, Lou is justified in what he is saying. In addition, this item about leprosy is just another inaccurate statement about his reporting. The leprosy was real, but he got the percentage wrong because of a poorly made statement in a document. This story is biased and beneath the usual standard of stories on HuffPo.
