WASHINGTON — Call them Kool-Aid drinkers. Political romantics. Starry-eyed dreamers.

But as the marathon Democratic primary campaign nears an end, Barack Obama's staff is on the verge of vindicating its belief that the eloquent black freshman senator from Illinois was a unique candidate who could win the Democratic nomination in one of the biggest upsets in presidential politics.

The band of Obama loyalists who imagined that could happen have stunned even themselves with their success against Hillary Rodham Clinton, who appeared to have wrapped up the nomination last year, before any votes were cast. Now, they face a new challenge with the impending nomination and campaign against Republican John McCain.

If they succeed, many team members could be helping run the country eight months from now. Presidents often appoint campaign advisers to top administration jobs.

The team was led by calm and focused campaign manager David Plouffe; their strategy was inspired by the candidate's experience as a community organizer. They built a campaign designed to accomplish what other political sensations like Gary Hart and Howard Dean failed to do _ turn the energy and excitement of the Obama phenomenon into long-term results.

"I think everyone knew realistically that he was starting as an underdog," said longtime friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett. "But I don't think he would have started down this path with a team that didn't think he would win. It was going to be an uphill battle, but in the end I think we were all confident that it could be done and that he could do it."

Matching Obama's organizing background, the team has roots in conducting on-the-ground congressional campaigns across the country. Many top aides were groomed by former House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt and former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle instead of by the Clinton wing of the party. Clinton's team was built with Washington and New York operatives.

From its experience in congressional races, the Obama team understood firsthand the extent of Clinton fatigue in the heartland and the lesson of the 2006 midterm elections: America wants change.

Obama's chief directive for hiring the more than 700 staff members who eventually came to work for him was: No Drama Allowed. Obama's even demeanor is reflected in the advisers closest to him. While Clinton's campaign divided into conflicting power centers whose emotional disputes leaked publicly, any fights in the Obama campaign were kept in the family.

Plouffe embodies Obama's vision _ a steady and unemotional number cruncher averse to the limelight, able to tune out noise and focus on the moves needed to reach the end game. Plouffe was the mastermind of Obama's long-range campaign plan that looked beyond the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday primaries that Clinton had predicted would deliver the nomination to her. He dispatched staff to states that Clinton's campaign overlooked, particularly small caucus states where intensive organization produced wins that swelled Obama's delegate lead.

A Gephardt guy, Plouffe had worked on campaigns that went broke, so he was notoriously cheap. Obama attracted a talented staff willing to work for much less than they could have made with Clinton. Plouffe carefully minded the bank account to preserve enough money to keep running after the wildly expensive Super Tuesday contests while Clinton's campaign went broke. She had to lend it $11.4 million to stay afloat.

In the month after Super Tuesday, Obama won 11 straight contests and took a delegate lead that Clinton has not been able to erase.

That's not to say Obama's campaign plan worked flawlessly. The initial plan was to turn a win in Iowa into a win in New Hampshire that would make his nomination unstoppable, but Clinton defeated him in New Hampshire and the campaign dragged on for months.

Now the team must reunite the fractured party and introduce Obama to a whole new swath of voters as he takes on a well-known war hero with bipartisan appeal. The campaign is rapidly adding new people, like experienced communications strategist Anita Dunn, who is married to campaign general counsel Bob Bauer and recently joined Obama's inner circle.

Obama's other closest advisers:

_ David Axelrod, a former newspaper columnist who shares Obama's talent with words, is the most experienced and visible political strategist. An idealist who exudes enthusiasm for his candidate, Axelrod helps buck Obama up on the road. Also from Chicago, he can play down-and-dirty politics with a Midwestern smile.

_ Jarrett, who has helped guide Obama's entire political career, brings blunt assessments only a longtime friend can provide. Jarrett has known the Obamas since before they were married, when she hired Michelle to work for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Known to be cool under pressure, she stepped up her campaign role last fall when Obama was a distant second to Clinton. Bringing a fresh outsider perspective, she held staff accountable.

_ Pete Rouse, who has run Obama's Senate office, is known for loyalty and a self-effacing manner. Rouse brings expert knowledge of Washington to a team based in Chicago. He protects Obama's standing in the capital city and has brought in other D.C. operatives, particularly from the Daschle fold where he used to run things.

_ Robert Gibbs, who has been at Obama's side since his Senate campaign, is communications director. A Southerner and tough fighter, Gibbs is a passionate defender and can channel the candidate's thoughts. He's also among a few who can frankly tell Obama what needs to improve.

_ Michelle Obama, the candidate's wife, is his closest confidant. She often says, "I'm not his senior adviser, I'm his wife." But she also talks about how dinner conversations about their family are what's in his mind when he's crafting policy. She's the ultimate truth teller to the candidate; he calls her for feedback after debates. She has led the campaign's outreach to female voters: As a lawyer and hospital executive, she provides evidence that Obama respects strong women even as he's campaigning against one.

Another crucial adviser is Steve Hildebrand, who oversaw state-by-state efforts to run up Obama wins. Other key team members are finance chairwoman Penny Pritzker, finance director Julianna Smoot, policy director Heather Higginbottom, scheduling director Alyssa Mastromonaco, deputy communications director Dan Pfeiffer, national press secretary Bill Burton, economics adviser Austan Goolsbee and foreign policy aides Anthony Lake and Susan Rice.

Shout outs for Gephardt, Daschle, Plouffe, Axelrod, Olbermann, and others listed in this report.

TRUE AMERICANS they are... working hard to allow us an opportunity to elect an amazing man, Barack Obama. We take for granted the jeopardy Barry has placed upon himself, his wife and beautiful daughters by standing up for us to make the needed changes after 8 years in hell with Bush.

But yesterday Mrs. Clinton reminded us of the potential for allowing the worse imaginable event to occur. Thank you Mrs. Clinton. You have made me honor, respect, and trust all the more, that Barack Obama is the ONLY person who can fulfill the office of president for this country, to lead us away from your deluded take on what YOU think we need.

God bless all of the mentioned Obama campaigners for having the courage to persevere on our behalf.

PS: Funny how Mrs. Clinton's campaign doesn't inspire any of that type of loyalty, vision or gratitude. I've never seen comments along those lines posted here. Usually they're just ANGER comments about "how dare he". Well he dares...and I thank God above every day that he does.

Not true. Clinton supporters do not bash Obama or use the hate towards him and his supporters. It's the Obamatons who do the hating. Don't you read these posts? Or is there something in the wiring of your brain that can't understand the hateful things said over and over about HRC. I won't sully this fine night air by repeating those awful words. Shame on you!

useyourbrain: They are so far gone that they cannot even recognize the hate mongering and vileness that they have poured on Hillary during this primary season.

And they keep abusing the HIllary supporters and still think that their candidate will get by in November without those 17 million votes.

Their arrogance has even surpassed that of the Bushie Republicans.

It is very sad.

If Obama doesn't stand up for equality, he's going to lose the general election. No one is excited about this candidate anymore because he looks weak in comparison to McCain. He has one last opportunity to show true leadership. Tell Obama he has to lead to win.

They don't have to recount them, just count them in the totals, and give the delegates credentials so they can participate at the convention.....this isn't rocket science. It amazes me how undemocratic the democrats have become, that's why the republicans look appealing if Obama is the nom....at least they act the way they really are....they don't talk unity and disenfranchize people, they don't pretend to be for the working man then ridicule him and call him a racist.....but, now the dems do those things and I won't be a member of a group so unAmerican in it's ideas. I love my country, and I support it's principals....so unless the dems come to their senses, I'll have to quit.

"aside from oregons mail in they use ES&S machines to tally" ???

But there is NO PROBLEM with this because a mail-in ballot is a paper ballot that can be counted, by hand if necessary. The problem with electronic voting machines is that some do not provide anyway to verify their result. Such machines should be phased out.

I hope their rules about how to recount votes are not the same as Florida's as whe found out last night on PBS' interview with Geoffrey Toobin that recount meant running the computer tally back through...not actually recounting each vote. It is up to how the counties specify recounts are done, folks. And we know Scalia's response to an appeal was "So, Get over it" and my guess is that would be followed by Alito, Roberts, Thomas and probably these days Kennedy.

Here is Clinton citing Carl Rove, endorsing John McCain, being supported by Rush Limbough and Ann Coulter and you have the audacity of saying the GOP favors Obama. But you are so ignorant to cite Chuck Hagel who is disliked by his party. Please stop all this nonsense.

Obama took down the vaunted, well financed Clinton machine. A machine so tough, that if Hillary had been the nominee, even with all their political baggage, and an energized Republican base against her, would've easily kicked McCain's ass, just like they did in 1996 against the other grumpy, gimpy 72 year old war hero Bob "I'll serve one term and die" Dole.
Against Obama's sleek, cerebral, innovative campaign, McCain'll stand even less of a chance. The cool demeanor, and fresh thought-provoking ideas on domestic, and foreign policy emanating from Obama will stand in stark contrast to a McCain getting angrier, and angrier as he keeps rfepeating the stale GOP mantra, "I'll cut your taxes, shrink government, and bring back Ozzie and Harriet" to sleeping audiences.
Do you really thnk it will be close? Do you really think McCain can keep his temper after consistently being smacked, and outmaneuvered by the nimble, eloquent Obama? He's already throwing angry, wild haymakers and it's just the first round.

Obama in a landslide unless they find a photo of him shooting up with Flavor Flav.

The so-called Clinton "machine" went up against the right wing, the RNC, Rove, etc. and won four elections. That's a pretty good record. Let's see what Obama-man will do in November.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:02 AM on 05/25/2008

That's what I was saying. The Clinton machine is a battle tested political machine, and Obama has beaten it. McCain'll be easier for Obama to defeat than the Clintons. I wish Gore and Kerry had been as tough with the RNC etc., as the Clintons. The country would be better off.

But, yeah, you are right. His campaign is an "unsinkable" Titanic. Hillary was just being nice and not mentioning a few of the real reasons BHO has no chance and is handing 2008 to McCain on an audacious silver plattter.

I've just finished The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria, the international editor of Newsweek and a native of India who had his college education here and has been here ever since, now based in New York.

It is an excellent, well balanced book, focusing on the history of the British and then American dominance, America's strengths and weaknesses as many other countries thrive in the next world era of globalization. I believe that Senator Obama is well suited to lead the United States in this time of change as we restate our place in the world from our many strengths and mend our weaknesses from the past years which have damaged our reputation. Other powers like China, India, Russia and even Brazil and moving forward and we need to function in new ways as we begin to share power. It's just reality, folks!

but people are still waking up to the fact that he is smarter then hillary.

but most important reason of them all is he is LIKABLE she is NOT.

and of course this is the biggest upset in the history of politics.

The MSM will NEVER say Obama is smarter than Hillary. It will always be stories about how he has the better "team", leaving out of course that it takes a smart person to know how to pick a smart team. The MSM also ignores how Ron Brown was the real reason why Bill beat George Bush, Sr. in '92.

And a little known 31 year-old attorney named Barrack Obama....

If they don't it's because he isn't smarter than Hillary. She is a brilliant woman. Much smarter than Bill, who was the smartest President we have ever had. He's not a dummy but please, those debate performances. He was either ignorant or unprepared. Both not the mark of a leader.

Remember, if you want to change things you have to be able to work the system so you could change things. Picasso was a great artist and draftsman so when he broke all the rules and changed the way art looked it was because he could do it the other way first.

To do otherwise is foolish and dangerous. You should know what you're going to change and how things will be after the change. Remember GWB was the change candidate in 2000. I think he should have been more specific about the change we were in for.

If the Clintons are the outsiders, then Obama has done what Rove, Bush and Cheney could not (just like they did what Bin Laden couldn't do with Saddam -- get into Iraq). They represent the majority of the Party and if they leave or are pushed out, that wouldn't be a good thing in the general and for the future of the party in Congress and State and Local elections.

If this is the unity Obama is speaking of, of the reaching out, of the change of tone, of the way things are done in Washington, then we are in for the same crap that we had with Bush. We will have a left-wing religious nut bag who says his faith guides his life. Good for him. I just don't want his faith, or anyone's faith, to guide my life. I'll guide my own life, thank you very much.,

It's amazing that you think you can win the general by marginalizing the Clintons. Bill Clinton was the last sitting Democratic President and if he isn't given a prime time spot to give a speech and not given the respect he is due -- there is going to be a big noise from Winnetka and it won't be a good one.

Those against Obama make assertions that he lacks experience while nothing could be further from the truth. Look at how well the campaign has been run and don't stop there read his books and you will have no doubt that he has far more pertinent experience than Clinton and even McCain.

Now as to Clinton, she has lost on any number of fronts. It is time to give the Clinton's what they have earned -- unconditional surrender. No bargains, no deals, no offerings and definitely no money.

Yeah, because 51/49 is such a crushing defeat for HRC. Keep spewing the insults, you're really paving the way for an Obama failure in the GE.

It seems Hillary has presented such a negative image of women (that many men are familiar with) her name will become a euphemism for woman with nasty character and domineering issues. Her name alone wraps up a description many men have tried to explain but lost words for. It's that bad. She's the new "Virginia Woolf".

She's a sucker compared to Michelle Obama. Just wait for Michelle to loosen up.

So true. Now that Hillary has opened her big mouth once too often with her RFK "AssassinationGate" remarks, the last person Hillary would want to come in direct contact with right now is Michelle Obama! Hillary should NEVER want to mess with a very lovely, well-educated, very intelligent but mentally tough African American woman from the South Side of Chicago!!!

Even Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown" from the South Side wouldn't want to mess with Michelle Obama! A beautiful rose if ever there was one in Michelle. But don't mess with her man Barack if you don't want to get pricked by her thorns! Hillary had better learn that lesson quick! :-)

I got five on a long-limbed, physically superior Michelle to clean Hill's clock...and for that nice hip-waist ratio to convince Bill to look the other way. LOL

You have to really wonder about the people who are still supporting Hillary. Are they really behind her or are they just against Obama. Makes you scratch your head and say, "What the hell..."

I suspect that most of them are against Obama. Tjier policies almost mirror each other. The big difference is in there persons. If you are a person of character, integrity, humility, respectfulness...then you would fall on the side of obama unless you just choose not to for reasons that simply bogle the miknd.

Yup, and the so called Dermocrats that vote McCain in Nov, will no longer be known as Democrats, but as self hating feminists and/or racists.

txgal44,
Living in an area where a man who went to a Nazi rally got 18% of the vote and we recently had a cross burning , there are many who hate Obama(in public or private). I'm white and ashamed of my family , but i think who would I have Christmas dinner with if I disowned them. I get these bizarre viral emails from them saying they heard Obama is a terrorist, or a Muslim, and will start a race riot. I can say it's ignorant thinking, and of course they don't think they are racists living in fear.

Somehow they will continue this fear mongering. While Obama wants to stay ethical, above the fray he will have to have some dog fighters to do the same viral emails.

And I think he has self admittedly commented that he does best when he goes to the common folk versus big rallies. That is why he won the two counties from where the Nazi fan and cross burners hailed. It was big news when he went door to door in the cross burning county. And most importantly the folks who spoke with Obama were on tv that night saying they were going to vote for him. Somehow Obama needs these common folk to BELIEVE that he truly feels they are SIGNIFICANT, that they MATTER.

Excellent points Lucky.. .I hope that you are doing your part, as well.. in telling them the truth. Every email I get that is a falsehood about Obama, I send an email back with the truth. It's easy enough to find... I doubt I'm making any friends in doing so, but I feel so strongly about people knowing the truth that I can't do anything less....

They are against Obama for running against Hillary. They are for any woman being president, no matter how dirty and unfair she plays. Hillary is gonna make it tougher for the next (qualified) woman who wants to run to be taken seriously. Please let the next woman candidate be emotionally stable and morally sound.

Yeah, if people were more truthful there would be bumper stickers that said, 'Anybody White 08'. Sad, makes me angry, but denying the truth doesn't make it less so.

It seems as if many who claim they are against Obama don't know anything about him. They claim he has no experience compared to Clinton but don't I see any examples to prove it. How can they not see that his campaign has been run so well and hers has been a mess? She rants, he is calm. I read these supposed Democrats claiming that Obama is a Muslim, stressing his middle name, saying he is sexist, doesn't know anything about foreign policy, etc, etc. It is clear that they have never taken the time to find out anything about him. Look at all the people that are leaving her campaign and joining Obama. Who are the Super Delegates supporting overwhelmingly the last two month? Obama

Judging by many of the comments I have seen in these posts and the defenses which Hillary supporters fling around as reasons why they won't vote for Obama, I am horrified at how woefully misinformed these people are. I have tried to have conversations with some of them about it and point out how their perceptions are inaccurate, but they definitely have no interest in facts. The seem to want to cling to their misperceptions and do not want to hear anything different even if it is the truth. The answers to all of those questions they say they have are available, but they don't seem to want to take the time to do the research and discover what is true and what is spin. What can you do? It's really sad that these people who don't care about the truth will have so much influence on who gets elected. I guess that's how we ended up with 8 years of Bush & Co.
