ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Republican John McCain on Monday sharply criticized Democratic rival Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, and said they should visit the war zone together.

"Look at what happened in the last two years since Senator Obama visited and declared the war lost," the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting told The Associated Press in an interview, noting that the Illinois senator's last trip to Iraq came before the military buildup that is credited with curbing violence.

"He really has no experience or knowledge or judgment about the issue of Iraq and he has wanted to surrender for a long time," the Arizona senator added. "If there was any other issue before the American people, and you hadn't had anything to do with it in a couple of years, I think the American people would judge that very harshly."

McCain, a Navy veteran and Vietnam prisoner of war, frequently argues that he's the most qualified candidate to be a wartime commander in chief. In recent weeks, he has sought portray Obama, a first-term senator, as naive on foreign policy and not experienced enough to lead the military.

The Iraq war, which polls have shown that most of the country opposes, is shaping up to be a defining issue in the November presidential election.

McCain, who wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, supports continued military presence in Iraq though he recently said he envisions victory with most U.S. troops coming home by January 2013 if he's elected. Obama, who has all but clinched the Democratic nomination, says he will remove U.S. combat troops within 16 months of taking office, though sometimes he shortens it to 11 months.

"For him to talk about dates for withdrawal, which basically is surrender in Iraq after we're succeeding so well is, I think, really inexcusable," said McCain, who has been to Iraq eight times, most recently in March.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton declined to respond directly to McCain, saying only: "Senator Obama thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing."

Over the weekend, Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of McCain's top surrogates, laid the groundwork for McCain's criticism in a television interview in which he noted Obama's absence from Iraq and floated the idea that Obama and McCain should go together to be briefed by Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Asked whether he'd be willing to take such a trip, McCain told the AP: "Sure. It would be fine."

"I go back every few months because things are changing in Iraq," he said. McCain questioned whether Obama has ever been briefed by Petraeus. "I would also seize that opportunity to educate Senator Obama along the way."

Both McCain and Obama spent part of Memorial Day in New Mexico, a general election battleground that was decided by razor-thin margins in 2000, for Democrat Al Gore, and in 2004, for Republican President Bush.

Obama addressed veterans Monday in Las Cruces while McCain used a speech at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial in Albuquerque to press his case against withdrawing troops from Iraq, saying they must continue their mission even though he's "sick at heart" by mistakes at the outset of the war.

McCain also defended his opposition to Senate-passed legislation that would provide additional college financial aid to veterans, a measure Obama supports.

The Republican made no direct mention of the Democrat but seemed to poke at him nonetheless.

McCain said his opposition to the bill was the right rather than the politically expedient position, suggesting Obama was on the wrong side of the measure sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia and approved by the Democratic-controlled Senate. Lawmakers blocked a more limited version that McCain supported.

"I am running for the office of commander in chief. That is the highest privilege in this country, and it imposes the greatest responsibilities. And this is why I am committed to our bill, despite the support Senator Webb's bill has received," McCain said. "It would be easier, much easier politically for me to have joined Senator Webb in offering his legislation."

However, McCain said he opposed Webb's measure because it would give everyone the same benefit regardless of how many times they enlist. He said he feared that would depress reenlistments by those wanting to attend college after only a few years in uniform. Rather, McCain said the bill he favored would have increased scholarships based on length of service.

McCain spent the early part of the holiday weekend at his retreat in Sedona, Ariz., where he entertained some two dozen guests, including three fellow Republicans who have been mentioned as possible vice presidential running mates: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"It really was just a social occasion," McCain told the AP. Asked whether he did any vetting of the three, McCain said: "None. Zero. There is plenty of time for that kind of thing."

McCain sounds like a old food with stupid one liners like that, he really needs to tell 70% of Americans who now want out, just how victory can be achieved agianst an idea.

Man, does this man ever listens to himself! Of course we don't want war! This war came out of one lie after another lie! Lie's got us into this war and lie's keep us in this way. Even the fund raiser he's haveing with Bush, has to be in secret! How can you say you aren't about bushs polocy's, and behind the scene out of sight, be for them? Mccain used the memorial Holliday for vets pushing the Iraq war down their throats, instead of useing the day to Honor the Veterans. He dumped the G.I Bill made up by Web, for political Hey talk and pointing fingers, instead of doing what was best for our veterans. Why doesn't he take a time out, and listen to the American people for a change? We and our loved ones are the ones sacrificeing for this country, not him! It's all about JOHN MCCAINS war! Its about telling us what's best for us, instead of listening to us, and what we want and what our vet's need! he wants war, because it's all he knows, and what he wants to be involved with as our President! Were playing into Al Queda's hand an letting this war financially break and weaken this country, and thats all the war in Iraq is doing for us!

McCain cannot school anyone on Iraq because he himself doesn't know whats going on there. He has made multiple trips to Iraq, but he is ignorant of the reality of the situation on the ground . He felt it safe to shop in the marketplace there, even though bulletproof vests, 100 soldiers, and helecopters flying overhead were required to protect him. He wrongly thinks that Gen. Petraeus travels in an unarmoured humvee. For a retired military officer, his asessment of the military situation in Iraq is very unimpressive.

McSame would not be able to surrender because he would not know who to surrender to.
Iraqi Civilians?
Sunnis?
Shias?
Kurds?
Insurgents?
non-white people?
AQIA?

I don't even know who would be "surrender"ed to. More smoke up the butt. Victory with honor? What victory? Where is honor? Clarke is nailing this on "Countdown" via Iran.

When it comes to Iraq, Barry "sees no evil", "hears no evil" and "speaks no evil".

He cannot visit Iraq because then he would have to admit the progress happening there.

Unlike McCain who, when he last visited Iraq declared how much success we were having and then two days later remarked how surprised he was at the violence that occurred just two days later...sounds like he has a real grip on reality now.

Memorial Day is to honor those who died in wars
Veterans Day is to honor those who served but are alive.

Get a clue.

"...he would have to admit the progress happening there", you say?

Really -- it is more he would have to turn away from the regression occurring here that caused the aggression over there that you are trying to spin as progression towards a nebulous victory.

My take on Iraq is twofold:

1. We have big -- super sized problems at home (Katrina demonstrated that marvelously). Clean your own house before attempting the cleaning of others. Especially when others are not threatening your house and you have to manufacture a cleaning plan for their house; not one based on a true dirt assessment but on the grime and filth of propaganda crafted to dupe a nation.

2. An inconsistent policy of intervention in the regimes of tyrants is not a valid policy.
We did not invade Rwanda or Darfur so we should not be in Iraq.

All contrarian views I have found to be a concoction of:

Blood lust: Wolfowitz, Lieberman, Bush, Cheney, McCain, Rumsfeld, William Kristol, Judith Miller, Feith, Hadley, Perle, Libby, etc…

Kool-Aid or ideological Heroin addiction: Paid and unpaid punditry, zealotry, zombie-ism, ghoulish tendencies, mentally challenged loyalty, flawed morality, compromised integrity, sophisticated -- yet translucent lies, etc…

Greed (paid consultants, Lobbyists, corporations, FOX News and other compromised news outlets, etc…)

This is a most despicable combination of ingredients (by any measure) for a foreign policy of a nation purporting to be great.

Your leaders refuse to tell you that the surge of troops into Iraq did not succeed.
The surge of U.S. dollars into Iraq bought the al Sadr cease fire and the Sunni militia (fighting as Al Qaeda) cease fire.

Bush lied; McCain is either senile or lying.

McCain's view that he is the ultimate expert on veteran's issues and the Iraq war will be exposed as his megalomania and make it a liability. When Obama gets under his skin McCain will implode.

JUST A CENTURY TO GRADUATION

If McCain wins the election, he'll have the next 100 years to school all of us on Iraq.

How many kids will lose their life during this senseless education process?

It's almost over. You know it and I know it.

The Iraqi military is conducting most of the missions. Al Queda in Iraq has pretty much been completely decimated....they can't find anymore suicide bombers. Al Sadr is hiding in Iran and his followers have succumbed to the Iraqi police. Most of these operations have been accomplished with very little US involvement.

Petraeus is going to agree to further drawdowns in September and all of you lefties are going to cry. "It's an election year stunt!!" But it's not. The surge really has worked that well and now the Iraqis are almost ready to take care of themselves.

Victory is at hand.

Folks, we really need to get serious with the way the right is tromping on the facts calling this a war. We all know it is their classic fear-baiting process, when actually, it's nothing but an occupation.

They squander the Moral High Ground everytime they say"Surrender" or "defeat".

Extremely important is the fact that they have absolutely no right to lie like this and make the case theirs.
The only way to beat this war of words is to encourage your Dem and progressive leaders to stop allowing pundits they talk to and debates we all involve ourselves in to allow anyone to term this differently from what it really is- an Occupation.
We will never win this intellectual battle if we don't pull it from the roots and term this all correctly.- It's not a war it's an occupation.

Ya right! Hillary doesn't know the difference from a grenade and Bosnia sniper fire! Mccain solution to Iran is another war, as if this one hasn't broke us financially enough already! Yah, these two will keep us real safe! The problem is one has memory lapse's and the other make's error's of speech because she's fatiqueed 24/7! Take your choice, either means mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, and Oh watch out when that phone rings at 3;ooam and those misstakes get us nuked! Right Riley85 you go live with one of them on your own little island. We americans don't need either one to be makeing important war or finance decisions for us! And Obama wants to educate you on different factions of Iraq, how they associate with each other, if they get along and if two subfactions of a faction has the same ideology as the other faction.

McCain may know how to fight a war but Obama knows how to win it and you don't need nukes to do it, you need good old fashioned diplomacy between the different factions in Iraq.

Once the country has figured out each others role in the country, who gets oil money, who lives where, it will only be then that a national army and police force can protect themselves.

This is not a war. This is an occupation of a struggling country currently under civil war.

We need a president with a new vision to help the Iraq's get out of their stalemate

Justify this, my little right-wing Pentagon lickers.
Discussing massive U.S. taxpayer payments made during the occupation of Iraq for which there is minimal or no documentation, Mary Ugone, the Defense Department's deputy inspector general for auditing, said, "We don't know what we paid for."
The inspector general for the Defense Department reported that the Pentagon can't account for $15 billion worth of goods and services that include trucks, bottled water, mattresses, rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns that were bought from contractors. An internal audit of $8 billion that the Pentagon paid out to U.S. and Iraqi private contractors found that "nearly every transaction failed to comply with federal laws or regulations aimed at preventing fraud, in some cases lacking even basic invoices explaining how the money was spent."
Remember, the Bush administration gasbags on constantly about the vital importance of fighting its spooky-wooky "war on terror," a "war" in which Iraq is supposedly the "central front." But the Bush-McCain bunch doesn't actually or officially care where the money goes. Why is that?
It's because they KNOW what taxpayers paid for. They paid to shovel billions into the pockets of politically connected Republicans and their fascist allies, who kick back a nice chunk of the change in campaign contributions.
Quite a system, isn't it? An ideal system for fascist criminals and traitors.

Obama is going to mop the floor with McCain during the debates. I look forward to them! McCain is definitely out of touch with the American people, and simply is using more of the same old republican smear tactics rather than talking the issues and how he'll resolve them. By the way, it the economy "stupid"!

What next, Obama eats little puppies? The GOP is so desperate about 2008, they'll gladly say anything, no matter how ridiculous, to win. Not to mention the veiled references to assassination. I blame the Bush admin for not only failing to censure hate speech and lying, but encouraging it without fear of repercussion.

Obama will raise the bar higher when he is president, and we will become a civilized nation again. And not a moment too soon.
