ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Republican John McCain on Monday sharply criticized Democratic rival Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, and said they should visit the war zone together.

"Look at what happened in the last two years since Senator Obama visited and declared the war lost," the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting told The Associated Press in an interview, noting that the Illinois senator's last trip to Iraq came before the military buildup that is credited with curbing violence.

"He really has no experience or knowledge or judgment about the issue of Iraq and he has wanted to surrender for a long time," the Arizona senator added. "If there was any other issue before the American people, and you hadn't had anything to do with it in a couple of years, I think the American people would judge that very harshly."

McCain, a Navy veteran and Vietnam prisoner of war, frequently argues that he's the most qualified candidate to be a wartime commander in chief. In recent weeks, he has sought portray Obama, a first-term senator, as naive on foreign policy and not experienced enough to lead the military.

The Iraq war, which polls have shown that most of the country opposes, is shaping up to be a defining issue in the November presidential election.

McCain, who wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, supports continued military presence in Iraq though he recently said he envisions victory with most U.S. troops coming home by January 2013 if he's elected. Obama, who has all but clinched the Democratic nomination, says he will remove U.S. combat troops within 16 months of taking office, though sometimes he shortens it to 11 months.

"For him to talk about dates for withdrawal, which basically is surrender in Iraq after we're succeeding so well is, I think, really inexcusable," said McCain, who has been to Iraq eight times, most recently in March.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton declined to respond directly to McCain, saying only: "Senator Obama thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing."

Over the weekend, Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of McCain's top surrogates, laid the groundwork for McCain's criticism in a television interview in which he noted Obama's absence from Iraq and floated the idea that Obama and McCain should go together to be briefed by Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Asked whether he'd be willing to take such a trip, McCain told the AP: "Sure. It would be fine."

"I go back every few months because things are changing in Iraq," he said. McCain questioned whether Obama has ever been briefed by Petraeus. "I would also seize that opportunity to educate Senator Obama along the way."

Both McCain and Obama spent part of Memorial Day in New Mexico, a general election battleground that was decided by razor-thin margins in 2000, for Democrat Al Gore, and in 2004, for Republican President Bush.

Obama addressed veterans Monday in Las Cruces while McCain used a speech at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial in Albuquerque to press his case against withdrawing troops from Iraq, saying they must continue their mission even though he's "sick at heart" by mistakes at the outset of the war.

McCain also defended his opposition to Senate-passed legislation that would provide additional college financial aid to veterans, a measure Obama supports.

The Republican made no direct mention of the Democrat but seemed to poke at him nonetheless.

McCain said his opposition to the bill was the right rather than the politically expedient position, suggesting Obama was on the wrong side of the measure sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia and approved by the Democratic-controlled Senate. Lawmakers blocked a more limited version that McCain supported.

"I am running for the office of commander in chief. That is the highest privilege in this country, and it imposes the greatest responsibilities. And this is why I am committed to our bill, despite the support Senator Webb's bill has received," McCain said. "It would be easier, much easier politically for me to have joined Senator Webb in offering his legislation."

However, McCain said he opposed Webb's measure because it would give everyone the same benefit regardless of how many times they enlist. He said he feared that would depress reenlistments by those wanting to attend college after only a few years in uniform. Rather, McCain said the bill he favored would have increased scholarships based on length of service.

McCain spent the early part of the holiday weekend at his retreat in Sedona, Ariz., where he entertained some two dozen guests, including three fellow Republicans who have been mentioned as possible vice presidential running mates: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"It really was just a social occasion," McCain told the AP. Asked whether he did any vetting of the three, McCain said: "None. Zero. There is plenty of time for that kind of thing."

This Republican tactic of portraying opponents of the war as naive or unpatriotic or weak will not work anymore. The truth is that anyone who wants to keep people in the military rather than let them go to college and maybe live a life of meaning and purpose while bettering their own communities is the one that is naive and unpatriotic. Remember, while McCain was knee deep in corruption (Keating 5) in 1989, Obama became the first black president of the Harvard law review. Does McCain think that Obama would have been better off invading Panama?

McCain doesn't no Sunni from Shia, Iran from Iraq, that the Iraq war is over, and that the Green Zone is not Indianapolis. What could he possibly teach but ignorance.

Notice McC says he is running "for the office of commander in chief." He is mute and/or dumb on most other issues. He can only visualize the presidency as a military role.

That is so sick and so sad. He will keep us in muiltiple wars. He should have more than one kid to send into the military. Come to think of it, his daughter in her early 20s should go, given that he wants others' kids to fight and die for his folly. They are dying for Republican renewed tax cuts.

He is so bad, so sick.

Maybe they could go shopping?

Am I being naive here or could a Senator actually get a pretty good idea of the situation by being briefed in Washington instead of making high cost photo ops in Bagdad? Does McSame talk to solders with opposing viewpoints or do they only send him the ones that will give him the news he wants to hear?

If Democrats allow Republicans to continue to twist and blur words and their meaning they will surely lose on the battleground for hearts and minds.

Iraq isn't a war anymore it is an armed occupation.
You can't surrender an occupation, the concept is ludicrous.

There is no winning or losing an armed (forced) occupation because the very use of force precludes victory as history has repeatedly shown in previous occupations.

The ones who say submission of the Iraqi people to America's design and wishes is "winning" have lost sight of what they said was their intended goal. An Iraqi democracy. Submission by force to a foreign entity is not democracy.

We will refuse to surrender to McCain's 19th century neo-con imperialistic view of the world. Maybe that's what bothers him.

And, when I watched his speech, he said we could never fully repay our soldiers for their sacrifice - but I guess that only includes those who do more than one hitch, eh John?
So, it's not compensation for service you really want, but enforced service with money as the prod to compel people to stay military rather than become civil-ians.
That's it, isn't it John - all military, all the time.

Bite me.

John McCain who voted for an ill planned war based on at best flawed data at worse "cooked" and distortion and lies. That has led toneedless deaths an hardship for soilders and thier families needs to first learn how to decide when to go to war and when not. He and Clinton both failed that exam. Sen. Byrd passed as did Barrack Obama

McCain later added to his invitation.

"Yes! Join me Barack Hussein Obama on my mystical, whimsical, jolly, rainbow gumdrop trip to Iraq where we will need extra security, will spurn more attacks with our very presence, putting even more Iraqi civilians and American troops in harms way.

And I promise not to use any of the footage gathered for attack ads in the general."

McCain is a decendent of warriors, who finished fith from the bottom of his class. We've already seen what happens when a president's experience is poor academic acheivement, is beholden to the corporate sector, and loves war. Time to give someone else a chance.

Vets for Freedom is a swiftboating group now attacking Barack Obama with a nasty smear ad suggesting that he would put America's enemies first. Apparently, John McCain approves -- he calls the group a "wonderful organization."

In addition four of his campaign officials are connected with the group: Senators Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman, both campaign co-chairman, also both sit on the Vets for Freedom board of advisors. The group's executive director, Pete Hegseth, is on McCain's Virginia steering committee along with the group's treasurer, Wade Zirkle.

All four men are in violation of McCain's recently announced conflict of interest policy, which states: "No person with a McCain Campaign title or position may participate in a 527 or other independent entity that makes public communications that support or oppose any presidential candidate."

Earlier this month, the campaign asked GOP consultant Craig Shirley to leave the campaign because of the same sort of conflict. If McCain also asks these four men to leave the campaign, the challenge for him will be to explain he lavishly praised as a "wonderful organization" as recently as April 8.

McCain's praise for Vets for Freedom came at a rally staged for the media. At the rally, McCain was introduced by David Bellavia, a Vets for Freedom co-founder and candidate for Congress in New York's 26th district. In his introduction, Bellavia likened Barack Obama to Tiger Words, bringing a big smile to McCain.

I love it when Sen. Graham, and Lieberman speak. It reminds me why I am no longer a Republican, and solidifies my vote against any Republican running for office. Some say, oh he is a good Republican. I say, if he backed the Bush administration, he/she has contributed to the lies, and deceit committed by the Bush administration.

And who exactly would the U.S. be surrendering to? No one. It is impossible to surrender in someone else's civil war.
