The Politico and Washington Post have excerpts from former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's scathing book on the Bush Administration.

From The Washington Post:

Bush is depicted as an out-of-touch leader, operating in a political bubble, who has stubbornly refused to admit mistakes. McClellan defends the president's intellect -- "Bush is plenty smart enough to be president," he writes -- but casts him as unwilling or unable to be reflective about his job.

"A more self-confident executive would be willing to acknowledge failure, to trust people's ability to forgive those who seek redemption for mistakes and show a readiness to change," he writes.

In another section, McClellan describes Bush as able to convince himself of his own spin and relates a phone call he overheard Bush having during the 2000 campaign, in which he said he could not remember whether he had used cocaine. "I remember thinking to myself, 'How can that be?' " he writes.

The former aide describes Bush as a willing participant in treating his presidency as a permanent political campaign, run in large part by his top political adviser, Rove.

"The president had promised himself that he would accomplish what his father had failed to do by winning a second term in office," he writes. "And that meant operating continually in campaign mode: never explaining, never apologizing, never retreating. Unfortunately, that strategy also had less justifiable repercussions: never reflecting, never reconsidering, never compromising. Especially not where Iraq was concerned."

From The Politico:

• McClellan charges that Bush relied on "propaganda" to sell the war.

• He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war.

• He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be "badly misguided."

• The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them -- and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him all the facts.

The Wall Street Journal also has a series of excerpts:

As press secretary, I spent countless hours defending the administration from the podium in the White House briefing room. Although the things I said then were sincere, I have since come to realize that some of them were badly misguided. In these pages, I've tried to come to grips with some of the truths that life inside the White House bubble obscured.

My friends and former colleagues who lived and worked or are still working inside that bubble may not be happy with the perspective I present here. Many of them, I'm sure, remain convinced that the Bush administration has been fundamentally correct in its most controversial policy judgments, and that the dis-esteem in which most Americans currently hold it is undeserved.

Only time will tell. But I've become genuinely convinced otherwise.

The book has already hit number 1 on Amazon.

Tom Brokaw on NBC news tonight lied about the episode in apologizing for himself and the media in the run up to the war. He said the "CIA insisted that Sadamn had WMD" but we know there was dissent within the CIA and protests that their analysis was being interfered with. Remember Amabassdor Wilson and his wife protesting the "yellow cake" line in the President's state of the union speech that year. Brokaw was a propagandist for the white house as bad as Faux news. Brokaw flunked out of the Univ. of Iowa yet became a spokesman for NBC News. Read the transcript of Brokaw's interview with Brian Williams and if you agreed that Brokaw is still covering up, then E mail NBC News and tell them. I can't stand Brokaw....over ranked, over compensated and a liar.

Brokaw was the worst because he conflated this with WWII and made a fortune.

I certainly hope Scott McClellan has Secret Service Protection. Bush had every intention of going home and resting his feet on his ottoman. Now --- he has to fenaggle another plot to get his ratings back up to 30. Jeez.......

If McClellan really beleived in what he's writing, he'd have written it long ago, when he first got booted out of his job. Is he in the running to be indicted for something? Sounds as if he's come to think he better cover his ass better than Libbey covered his.

If the Hillary supporters do not support Obama then McCain will win and we will have more wars, more charges of being unpatriotic, more figure pointing that Democrats are the problem with the country. McCain will borrow people from the Bush administration.

McCain means a 3rd term of this nonsense.

Bush, Cheney and the gang (consisting all the warmongers / planners of Iraq War) must be put on trial for war crimes. They should spend rest of their lives in prison. If the Democratic Party does not take appropriate action against these people then it will be obvious that democrats are a part of this war crime. Then who is going to bring justice in this country?

Save your judgemental crap about the candidates, and focus your ire on the actual criminals, the Bush Administration. Blame Nancy Pelosi for taking impeachment off the table, I never hear anyone mention her responsibility for allowing these criminals to continue in office. Harry Reid, go jump off a bridge. Useless.

100% on point. I wonder what Sean Hannity's audience is saying about him now because he defended this administration on the Valerie Plame CIA leak case to the end. He defended them on the needless war wich exposed our potential weaknesses to other countries.............IMPEACH NOW!

King george jr should be rewarded richly for his many accomplishments and achievements.

His incredible capacity for incompetence.

His ability to steal 2 elections.

His capacity for “catapulting the propaganda” to start an illegal war in Iraq based on lies and spin.

His willingness to kill tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi men women and children and over 3 thousand of our own soldiers.

His lack of reluctance to commit treason during a time of war (outing the CIA agent whom specialized on WMD’s).

His love for and organizing skills used to promote torture and abuse.

His easy dismissal of the constitution, the Geneva conventions, and the writ of habeas corpus.

His over 900 signing statements.

His unbending devotion and loyalty to the oil, Saudi Arabia, and defense industries.

For all of this and so much more, our king and his minions should all be IN JAIL. But failing that (and the spineless dems will) he should at the very least be inert, unmoving, unheard, unseen, and undamaging. From now till the end of his chaotic reign he should stay in Texas. Where he can satisfy his blood lust by killing trees, shrubs, and any small animals that cannot escape his treachery.

He did not WIN twice. First, in 2000, he was appointed by the Supremes. Then in 2004 he just stole it outright with the help of his buddy at Diebold voting machines.

This creature has never really been elected to the office of president. Just like every other self-respecting fascist dictator he installed himself with the help of his criminal friends and minions.

Scott McClellan's (Bush's Spokesperson) new book proves that it is time for Americans to wake up as to how we have been totally bamboozled by The Regime via the media. It is of vital importance that Americans learn about PNAC...the plan written in 1992 for America to invade Iraq, Iran and Syria (in that order). The PNAC plan (google it) was signed by the drafters and signatures included Cheney, Wolfovitz, Rumsfeld, Card, Bolton and basically every member of the Bush Regime. THE MEDIA HID THIS FOR YEARS AND IS STILL DOING SO. The only place that some truth would squeek out was through Arianna, Democracy Now, The Nation and occasional CSPAN. WAKE UP AMERICA. Even other countries knew just how mislead we were for years. THEY THINK AMERICANS ARE STUPID ! Everyone MUST stay on this terrible truth. Over 4000 American heros ARE DEAD FOR A LIE (and 10's of thousands detroyed for life). LEARN TRUTH.....THE AWAKENING IS UPON US !!!!! And if McCain wants to continue this war based on total lies.....he should be courtmarshalled for treason !

p.s. Don't believe the media as they CLAIM they were duped. THEY ARE LYING...CYOA !

Greg Jones
B4B

p.s. The 6 so-called military experts recently caught being paid by the Pentagon to lie daily regarding the Iraq War (over 4500 appearances) via cable news channels could not have done so without the cooperation of the news networks. The Regime and Media worked TOGETHER !!!

GREGJONES: you speak the truth. Without the complacent and complicit media, things might have been different. But Americans deserve a measure of responsibility for voting this criminal back into power, knowing that the war was a disaster and that lies were told. Knowing in 2004, 50% of America voted for Bush AGAIN.....

IMPEACH NOW! The more I hear the more it makes me sick. Every time we uncover a stone we find BUSH crap. The American people need answers. The only way is through IMPEACHMENT because Bush will only lie to us. Now we know why the (R)Republican party as a whole toed the line for Bush and his cronies at the exspense of the American people.

Note the responses that are coming forward about the book - "disgruntled", "never said anything then". Notice that nobody who is or was in the administration seems to be saying that he's not actually telling the truth?

They don't want to get nailed in a blatant lie and hung out to dry the way Scotty was, so they are carefully avoiding a direct contradiction of what they know to be the truth.

This book is damage control. They're not denying what everybody knows; they're just trying to put the best possible spin on it. The BS that Scotty's "off the reservation" is just more cover. This isn't a tell-all by a disgruntled ex-employee, it's a PR move by a loyal team player.
