The Politico and Washington Post have excerpts from former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's scathing book on the Bush Administration.

From The Washington Post:

Bush is depicted as an out-of-touch leader, operating in a political bubble, who has stubbornly refused to admit mistakes. McClellan defends the president's intellect -- "Bush is plenty smart enough to be president," he writes -- but casts him as unwilling or unable to be reflective about his job.

"A more self-confident executive would be willing to acknowledge failure, to trust people's ability to forgive those who seek redemption for mistakes and show a readiness to change," he writes.

In another section, McClellan describes Bush as able to convince himself of his own spin and relates a phone call he overheard Bush having during the 2000 campaign, in which he said he could not remember whether he had used cocaine. "I remember thinking to myself, 'How can that be?' " he writes.

The former aide describes Bush as a willing participant in treating his presidency as a permanent political campaign, run in large part by his top political adviser, Rove.

"The president had promised himself that he would accomplish what his father had failed to do by winning a second term in office," he writes. "And that meant operating continually in campaign mode: never explaining, never apologizing, never retreating. Unfortunately, that strategy also had less justifiable repercussions: never reflecting, never reconsidering, never compromising. Especially not where Iraq was concerned."

From The Politico:

• McClellan charges that Bush relied on "propaganda" to sell the war.

• He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war.

• He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be "badly misguided."

• The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them -- and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him all the facts.

The Wall Street Journal also has a series of excerpts:

As press secretary, I spent countless hours defending the administration from the podium in the White House briefing room. Although the things I said then were sincere, I have since come to realize that some of them were badly misguided. In these pages, I've tried to come to grips with some of the truths that life inside the White House bubble obscured.

My friends and former colleagues who lived and worked or are still working inside that bubble may not be happy with the perspective I present here. Many of them, I'm sure, remain convinced that the Bush administration has been fundamentally correct in its most controversial policy judgments, and that the dis-esteem in which most Americans currently hold it is undeserved.

Only time will tell. But I've become genuinely convinced otherwise.

The book has already hit number 1 on Amazon.

What we witness now, and in the coming months, is all of those who empowered Bush-Cheney from their positions of favor will realize the Faustian bargains they made. As REALITY strikes, they will realize the rot and debt on their soul, and they will be crawling out from under the rock to frantically unburden themselves by unparalleled truth telling.

Whistle blowers arise. GO! GO! GO!

What we seem to be witnessing in McClellan’s book is the metamorphosis of a parrot (“We are not going to comment on an ongoing legal action”) into a whistle-blower. What rational person among us doesn’t already believe that the entire Bush-Cheney 8 years will go down in American history as one of the biggest stains upon our otherwise lofty experiment in democracy?

I’m so looking forward to the office of Special Prosecutor in the Obama administration! (With the number of crimes in this regime, it might take a dozen Special Prosecutors to catch up!)

I disagree. It's elrmentary social psychology that " those who empowered Bush-Cheney " will obfuscate, deny, justify, and minimize their involvement. I don't expect any unburdening or avalanche of truth telling. Most of these psychopaths are constitutionally incapable of feeling guilt or admitting error.

People get the government they deserve. Not only did people vote for Bush as a somewhat unknown commodity in 2000, but they reelected him in 2004 knowing full-well what kind of man he was.

America; don't elect McCain unless you are completely content with the Iraq war and America's current foriegn and domestic policies.

Bush had to steal both, the 2000 and 2004 elections to win. Florida threw out legitimate votes, and Ohio had the diebold machines in 04.

I'm shocked Bush used propaganda to push the war ,NOT,what the media should be asking the candidates if they will prosecute the Bush Clan if their elected.

This is the biggest story here. The media were willing accomplices in this propaganda campaign. True journalists ask the tough questions, do not let up, and expose lies with rabid glee. There was a quote from one journalist in the WH press corps who said that they were "afraid" to ask the president the tough questions because it was such a tense time (i.e., the run-up to war). This is exactly when then should be asking questions: when they're afraid. They are reflections of the public's attention. If they can get the answers, then everyone can.

This is just an example of how the corporations that now control the media assisted the president in perpetrating this wholesale fraud against the people.

I feel sorry for this bastard.
He accepted a job and put himself out there as a loyal spokesman. After he leaves, he betrays the administration and conservatives will rightfully hold him in contempt. And equally correct, the left sees him as a hypocrite and piece of crap as well.

If I witnessed a horrible crime 6 or 7 years ago but didn't say anything until now, and I did it by writing a book that would sell for a lot of money, would you think I'm awesome too?

Oh, poor boy. Doesn't look good for your team does it.? If there has been any betrayal, it is a betrayal of the code of honor among thieves. His motives may or may not be selfless, but It is not betrayal if it is the truth.

Of course he's disgruntled! If they were paying any attention at all to the world outside of their little bubble, they'd see that 82% of the country is disgruntled (not to mention most of the rest of the world) with their piss poor, incompetent excuse for leadership. Mr Bush, impeachement may be off the table, but it is time for you to step down none the less. Save yourself and the nation from massive embarrassment and possible extinction and resign NOW.

The sad part is that a majority of the 25%er's would not defect from Bush even if there were pictures of him with farm animals.

There is nothing new in the revelations described in the papers. It has all been clear to anyone who has been paying attention for the last 7+ years. It is comforting to hear it from one of the rat pack, though.

One thing is clear: Bush, Rove etc are always caught by surprise with something like this. Because they never listen to others and never listen to the warnings of others. They didn't listen with Katrina, didn't listen with 9/11, didn't listen to the economists.

Who knows, maybe McClelland did try to say something, maybe he did feel he was being used and said something about it. But, one thing we can be sure of, Bush didn't listen. He probably thought a few good pats on the back would make Scottie forever beholden to him.

(CNN) — Former White House counselor Dan Bartlett lashed out at Scott McClellan in a telephone interview Wednesday, saying the allegations that the media was soft on the White House are "total crap," adding that advisers of President Bush are "bewildered and puzzled" by the allegations in McClellan's new book.

"It's almost like we're witnessing an out-of-body experience," Bartlett said of McClellan. "We're hearing from a completely different person we didn't have any insight into."

"Completely different person" Hmm, is that the W.H codeword for crazy ?

W.H. sounding desperate.

Regarding the exchange be between Rove and Libby: 'You have time to visit?' Karl asked. 'Yeah,' replied Libby.

McLellan says that image "sticks vividly in my mind". Why would that have stuck in his mind at the time if he didn't seriously suspect their guilt AT THE TIME?

I have to admit that it's hard for me to take anything McLellan says seriously. I remember when he was the Press Secretary.

There's a funny Flash Animation on toostupidtobepresident.com from that time. For those who would like a laugh, it can be seen here:
