The Politico and Washington Post have excerpts from former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's scathing book on the Bush Administration.

From The Washington Post:

Bush is depicted as an out-of-touch leader, operating in a political bubble, who has stubbornly refused to admit mistakes. McClellan defends the president's intellect -- "Bush is plenty smart enough to be president," he writes -- but casts him as unwilling or unable to be reflective about his job.

"A more self-confident executive would be willing to acknowledge failure, to trust people's ability to forgive those who seek redemption for mistakes and show a readiness to change," he writes.

In another section, McClellan describes Bush as able to convince himself of his own spin and relates a phone call he overheard Bush having during the 2000 campaign, in which he said he could not remember whether he had used cocaine. "I remember thinking to myself, 'How can that be?' " he writes.

The former aide describes Bush as a willing participant in treating his presidency as a permanent political campaign, run in large part by his top political adviser, Rove.

"The president had promised himself that he would accomplish what his father had failed to do by winning a second term in office," he writes. "And that meant operating continually in campaign mode: never explaining, never apologizing, never retreating. Unfortunately, that strategy also had less justifiable repercussions: never reflecting, never reconsidering, never compromising. Especially not where Iraq was concerned."

From The Politico:

• McClellan charges that Bush relied on "propaganda" to sell the war.

• He says the White House press corps was too easy on the administration during the run-up to the war.

Story continues below

• He admits that some of his own assertions from the briefing room podium turned out to be "badly misguided."

• The longtime Bush loyalist also suggests that two top aides held a secret West Wing meeting to get their story straight about the CIA leak case at a time when federal prosecutors were after them -- and McClellan was continuing to defend them despite mounting evidence they had not given him all the facts.

The Wall Street Journal also has a series of excerpts:

As press secretary, I spent countless hours defending the administration from the podium in the White House briefing room. Although the things I said then were sincere, I have since come to realize that some of them were badly misguided. In these pages, I've tried to come to grips with some of the truths that life inside the White House bubble obscured.

My friends and former colleagues who lived and worked or are still working inside that bubble may not be happy with the perspective I present here. Many of them, I'm sure, remain convinced that the Bush administration has been fundamentally correct in its most controversial policy judgments, and that the dis-esteem in which most Americans currently hold it is undeserved.

Only time will tell. But I've become genuinely convinced otherwise.

The book has already hit number 1 on Amazon.

There should be an investigation of Bush, Cheney, Rove and all who were involved in the mis-leading of the American people and the Iraq War. The charge should be murder, conspiracy to murder, treason, corruption and ect. Yes Murder of American finest as well as the lives of the innocent civilians killed in Iraq.. But the war wasn't about the spread of Democracy, WMD, not even about oil...It was all about Israel and promoting the NWO agenda

Exactly. SOME investigation should have been initiated at this point. SOME oversight by the Senate. SOMETHING!
If Bush were a Democrat, does anyone believe he would not have been impeached by now?

Obama's going to take care of it. He said he would if it was warranted.

Of course if he doesn't, it will mean it's not warranted - or he's a liar.

Gee Scott. Tell us something we don’t know. And how about revealing all of this when it might have made a difference – and not after this administration has had 7 years to do its damage. Or were you simply waiting on your book deal?

Can't wait to read it! Who but Scott could know better? ...

But what I'm *really* waiting to get my hands on is Colin Powell's book, due to be out in [fill in the blank]

Are you listening Mr. Powell? I think you're up next ...

This is exactly what I have been thinking. I think Colin Powell should "out" Bush and Co., it would not only help cleanse his soul but would serve a lesson on how even a virtuous man and war hero can be reduced by these neocon thugs. I feel sorry for Colin Powell, he would have been ripe for a run at a presidency he was so popular and look where he ends up . I imagine his must been in great pain for the blood on his hands.

Why do you think that he's in great pain? Because he has stepped forward and whistle-blown and apologized for his part in this terrible bloody deception? Because he has shown any shred of remorse re: the way he deliberately lied to Congress and the American people? Because he has endorsed a Democrat? Because he has opined on the Iran war mongering? No. He skulked away and has remained silent.

Powell continues to get a pass because people perceive him as having some sort of integrity. He hasn't shown me that he has any... he's just as guilty as the rest of them as far as I'm concerned. He has been very successful at ducking responsibility for the part he played in all this horror.... is it his dazzling uniform or his service to the country that has created this perception? I don' t know. I don't like him and don't believe him and think he's a bad man. He's One Of Them.

I say, indict them all and reclaim our country!

by the way Scott McClellan now works with APCO (so does Huffington-Posting creep Marc Ginsberg). Look them up. One of their core values is "Tell The Truth" which, considering what they do for a living, would be amazing.

I used to think Scott McClellan was a total tool and complete Bushite drone when he'd say anything at all on television. It makes me respect him a good deal more for him to come out and admit the things he has, even if it was too late to do any good.

I didn't believe him when he was saying things I didn't like.

Now I believe him because it fits my worldview.

Nice.

and you believed him when?

He's believable now because he confirms what we already knew. Not because he's saying what we want to hear.

Neo Cons always get that wrong. They have no clue that it brings us no joy to be right about these things. We watch in horror as things out of our control unfold and can see where it's heading. It's not fun and it's not validating. It's an absolute horror.

Only a moron didn't already know this about Bush and Co. McClellan isn't talking to US. He's talking to THEM. Maybe some of THEM will hear it from one of their own. But probably not because the opposite of what you said is true for NeoCons... they only believe what serves them to believe even if it's demonstrably true.

I suppose that it is good that McClellan has written this book even though nothing in it comes as any surprise to me. I didn't need this book to tell me what a rotten to the core administration this is. Not to mention crimes committed and continuing to be committed. I only wish we had the lives back of those that were used in Iraq to build up this President's ego.

The White House is doing to him what they have done to anyone else that has spilled their guts. TRASH THEM! I was never a fan of McClellan and I still have no respect for him, but I believe he is telling the truth. If he had any cojones he would have resigned early on instead of continuing to cash his government checks.

The coming years will bring to light actions that will probably make our air stand on end, I only hope that some of these people here the clang of metal and a key being turned in the lock of their jail cells.

Afghanistan was just, Iraq is a crime!!

McLellan, better late then never. This is perfect timing leading into the summer and fall campaigns. Bush looks like the idiot most of us already know him to be. The GOP's big problem is that McLellan seems like such an insider - all they can say is 'this doesn't sound like the Scott I know' - so if thats their best defense they're in big trouble. Bush/Rove/Cheney should've considered that this could happen before they threw McLellan under the bus by having him peddle their lies.

This book will help to prevent a possible Bush strike against Iran, and it will also remind voters of all the lies going into Iraq. Lies that John McCain not only bought, but still defends. McCain needed Bush to become a little less of a national disgrace, which clearly isn't gong to happen. Just imagine the GOP convention with the likes of Bush and Cheney in prime time - maybe even another weird Bush-McCain hug - that's gonna be priceless.

The big loser from the release of this book is John McCain.

For the past 60 years, everyone who has come into contact with Bush walks away disgruntled.

I understand Barbara was very disgruntled the day Bush was born. His father, I'm sure, is disgruntled as well.

The response of the WH to the McClellan book is VERY revealing.
Their "shock" and "disappointment" can now be exposed as such complete BS. The fact is that unless Scott McLellan has lost his mind (which I wouldn't past the WH to say), his opinions should be considered serious and most likely legitimate.
Who but a person inside that group would be better to pass judgement on their actions? Why doesn't the WH have the class or the smarts to best have a "No Comment" on this rather than embarassing themselves further by "spinning" things all over again. I guess old habits die hard....
This is definitely the beginning of the end - and this "end" will probably go on for years until all the "facts" on these guys ooze out of all the cracks.

In fact, this "news" is not news at all and the contents of his book were well known long before it's release. I remember him appearing on Jon Stewart's show last year to announce it's publication - and the damage control was already started back then.

But personally, as much as I despise the weasel McClellan, (which was misspelled on the headline) I think his timing for the book release is perfect. Bush hangs around the neck of McCain like a dead albatross and Scotty throws a few extra tons of truth on top of Bush. Nobody should be more disturbed by the release of Scotty's book than McCain.

He can barely lift his legs already.

Although we need to watch out now, as the Media megaphone will now shift gears, try to act according to the merits of factual and investigative reporting and take a huge bite out of the next administration (which will be a Democrat - unless Fox news decides to call it to McCain!).
Yep, for 8 years the media morons have taken the back seat, coasting through the shameful domination and gross manipulation of the Bush administration. Okay there's a few out there who strive to get the tough questions answered, but basically for the first 4 years of this administration the media completely sold out to Scotty and Bush regime.
The good and the bad --- there will be a miraculous change in the Medias' coverage of the White House, just in time for the Democrat... Oh my, our media are the greatest manipulators -- the corporations continue to win. Shock and awe all over again.
