NANTUCKET, Mass. — The airplane came to a stop, the door opened and out popped Tony Blair. At the bottom of the stairs to greet the former British prime minister on Saturday was Sen. John Kerry, looking every part the diplomat.

Four years after a failed presidential bid and amid a race for a fifth Senate term this fall, Kerry's moves have prompted some questions:

_Is the Massachusetts Democrat positioning himself to be secretary of state in a potential Barack Obama administration?

_Could a Kerry appointment create not one but two Senate openings in Massachusetts, assuming Sen. Edward Kennedy cannot complete his term after being diagnosed last week with brain cancer?

Kerry aides insist he's not angling for the job and point to his long involvement in foreign affairs. It started with his famous testimony as a 27-year-old veteran questioning the Vietnam War before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It continues today, at age 64, as the No. 3 Democrat on the same panel.

But envisioning him in the post would hardly be a stretch given Obama's chances at securing the Democratic nomination, a general election shaping up as a "change" campaign and Kerry's relationship with the Illinois senator.

Kerry would likely face competition from Sen. Joseph R. Biden of Delaware, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee; Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, a former Peace Corps volunteer who also sits on the panel, and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, a top Obama adviser.

Over the weekend, Kerry wrote a Washington Post op-ed column chastising President Bush and John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, for criticizing Obama after he said that, as president, he would be willing to negotiate with U.S. opponents such as Iran.

In recent weeks, the Senate has also passed Kerry-sponsored resolutions seeking humanitarian aid for Burma and Robert Mugabe to step aside as president of Zimbabwe, while Kerry has filed legislation to remove South African President Nelson Mandela from U.S. terrorist watch lists.

The senator invited Blair to this island getaway last weekend so they could discuss the Middle East and climate change.

"John Kerry would love to end his career as secretary of state. It would be a capstone to a life that has always been devoted to public service, but in particular has been focused on foreign affairs," said Jeffrey Berry, a political science professor at Tufts University.

Kerry helped Obama burst on the national stage by selecting the then-Senate candidate to deliver the keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. And he endorsed Obama over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton even though she had just won the New Hampshire primary.

Yet an Obama spokesman kept a respectful distance from questions about a potential Cabinet appointment.

"Senator Obama appreciates his close friendship with Senator Kerry, his service to this country and his early support for our campaign. It is obviously far too early to even speculate about the makeup of an Obama administration _ as we are still in a nomination fight _ but with his depth of expertise, especially on issues of foreign policy, Senator Kerry would be on the short list for anyone's Cabinet," said spokesman Bill Burton.

Kerry aides recoiled at the question, fearful it would renew criticism the senator has his eyes anywhere but on his homestate constituents.

The issue has taken on added sensitivity in an election year in which Kerry faces at least one Republican opponent, and amid questions about Kennedy's health.

Were Kennedy unable to complete his term, Kerry would face pressure to assume the role of a Democratic colleague many have dubbed the state's "go-to guy" in Washington. Senate vacancies in Massachusetts are filled by special election. While the state is heavily Democratic, it has a history of electing moderate Republicans to high office.

"Senator Kerry is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate, where he was recently ranked the twelfth-most powerful member," said spokesman David Wade. "He looks forward to continuing to chair the Middle East subcommittee, where he's focused on the war in Iraq and security in the region. The only job he has his sights on is the one he already holds and he plans to stay right there."

Foreign affairs provided a flashpoint in Kerry's presidential campaign. While the senator voted in October 2002 to authorize military action against Iraq if necessary, he criticized Bush for failing to expand allied support for the March 2003 invasion.

Later, during an October 2004 debate, Bush criticized Kerry for saying military action should pass a "global test" of legitimacy within the U.S. and among its allies.

I would like to see Kerry in the newly created Democrat position...

SECRETARY OF NUANCE

He's so sophisticated and above it all, he could win back the love of the coctail set in Paris.

BHO '08!!

And what is wrong with that? It fits him like a suit. Kerry will make a good diplomat.

Did you really believe Obama's message of 'change', you have to be kidding me right? How old are you? At least, the Clinton's had set the country on the right track in the 1990's. Kerry, Richardson and the rest couldn't find their way out of a paper bag. Kerry lost because he blew off Bill Clinton, Gore lost because he blew off Bill Clinton. Obama will lose because he has completely and utterly disrespected the Clinton's. What Obamanites don't understand is that the majority of the American people have always rallied to Bill & Hillary's side even after they were tortured by the Republican Party and even the turncoats in their own party throughout the 1990's. Bill Clinton governed effectively through it all. Americans never stopped believing in them and why should they stop believing. Bill Clinton was and is the best thing that ever happened to this messed up party in over 40 years. He ranks right up there with FDR. Oh, by the way Obamanites, John Kerry voted for the war too; unless you suddenly forgot, until he 'changed' his mind when he was running for POTUS. And now you think he would make a great Secretary of State? Don't you people get it?

We are all entitled to our opinions. I believe (based on 30 years of serious study), that history will grade Bill Clinton no better than a C-plus. Why? Because most of his foreign policy was reactive; his one real success was Bosnia (in spite of Republican obstructionism). His domestic policy was characterized by giving away too much to the Republicans at the expense of American workers. His trade policies and union policies and finance policies were give-aways to the corporate ruling class. In economic policy, he benefited from a confluence of events in the development of the information technology revolution with which he had very little to do. And he did nothing to soften the bursting of the technology bubble by restraining it before it burst. Finally, by his irresponsible personal behavior, he cemented the public disgust with the Democrats at that moment and gave great aid in the Democratic loses that followed his last term. Bill Clinton was a Bourbon Democrat.

I have been a Democratic legislative district chair. I have been a Democratic precinct committee officer since 1979 and I have supported every Democratic presidential nominee since then. History will judge Bill Clinton as second rate. In order for Democrats to make a better future, we must be able to engage in honest self examination. I will support whoever is the Democratic nominee in the election.

I sure hope Kerry ends up in the new administration. He is an intelligent politician and campassionate human being. He deserved to win in 2004, and only failed because he was not a dirty fighter like Rove and Cheney.

Oh and because too many Americans held onto ignorance and stayed with Bush.

No. He failed to win because he was painted as an "egghead", an "elitist", a liberal, and out of touch with the common working man. Sound familiar?

I've been saying for a while that Kerry would make a great Secretary of State. He has such extensive knowledge of foreign affairs and he's been a great surrogate for Obama.

So change means "recycling old, discredited losers" then? Huh

BigLib,

Exactly what it means. Obama supporters and surrogates are such hypocrites., "Change' my ass. Bill Richardson is angling for a something too. 2 losers with their hands out. God forbid Kerry's appointed Secretary of State in a 'possible' Obama adminstration. What a joke. I find it very disturbing that a campaign that has run on so-called 'change' for over a year now, is making back room deals with the old farts in the Democratic Party , for the nomination and for payback. Please, it's biz as usual. LOL. At least the Clinton's never pretended or shilled the BS of Obama on the American public. Anybody notice how he's pandering to the Cubans in FLA. now? Bcakstepping on all his no-preconditions, offering 'visits to relatives' to entice FLA. Cubans. The Cubans won't buy the flip-flop, they don't forget. Obama has and always has been an ambitious politician that hoodwinked all the young & naive with his vague message of change. Did you read the list of possible VP's? Hysterical.

Two losers with their hands out? You must mean Bill & Hillary. Bill has already been supposedly pressuring to get his co-liar Hillary on Obama's ticket as VP when her attempt to steal the nomination fails.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:54 PM on 05/28/2008

Lucid, Iagree. And I think the Obama supporters are in for the shock of their lives when all of Obama's chickens come home to roost, as far as the many back door deals he has had to make to get this far. All of the Dem. "old guard" know, based on experience, that the Clintons cannot be pushed around by them. That was one of their complaints about Bill. He made up his own mind, and could rarely be swayed. I know for a fact, that he made a lot of enemies in his own party because they lost their ability to run things behind the scenes. Now with the neophyte Obama, they know that they can return to power, using him, just as the repubes used Chimpy so successfully. Should be fun and interesting to watch.

Kerry is about to become the senior senator of Mass for the first time in 20+ years and will finally have the stage to himself in the state. No way will he leave now. Plus, Obama will want as many Dem congresspeople keeping their seats as possible to give him leverage with legislation.

Kerry's staying put.

Wow, are you deluded. Hillary will have trouble keeping her own seat from New York. A lot of people here don't like her, especially after seeing her behavior during this campaign. You may want to invite her to run from your state; we don't want her.

I'm also from NY and nibblybits is right. Hillary is NOT popular in NY right now. Many say they are even disgusted that she draws a Senate salary. It's really strange to hear the people from other states who hold the belief that HRC is such a workhorse with all these solutions for America, who has this magical ability to get things done. Sorry guys, this just hasn't been proven in NY. It's like we've only have ONE Senator from this state, Charles Schumer, while Hillary just sat on her butt, dreaming of the presidency. Now we've come to find out she couldn't even do THAT right. I think the only reason she was ever elected in the first place was name recognition.

LOL @ thinking you nutjobs have that kind of power. Sounds like the level of delusion afflicting of one of the candidates in this race.

You need only to check out the AJC here in Atlanta to read the editorial about how neither Clinton or Obama can beat McCain with middle class white males. And it is further stated that if Obama fails to win over Clinton female supporters, he is toast. He CANNOT win without us. Better play nice now, or your guy will be a "one hit primary wonder".

I think Sen. Kerry would do great as Sec. of State. Not sure how much Obama will want to cannibalize the Senate, but if he does, Kerry is a great fit for his administration. Same with Chris Dodd.

He can't appoint Dodd...Connecticut has a Republican governor. But I love the idea of Kerry for Sec of State.

For the last 40 years, we've had Secretaries of State with an academic expertise in the Soviet Union and Russia. And, that makes sense because that was our biggest foreign policy challenge. But, now, times have changed. Our biggest foreign policy challnege is now in the Middle East.

Therefore, I would suggest someone like Noah Feldman. He's young, he's brilliant, he's an expert in Middle East affairs, and he speaks Arabic.
