NANTUCKET, Mass. — The airplane came to a stop, the door opened and out popped Tony Blair. At the bottom of the stairs to greet the former British prime minister on Saturday was Sen. John Kerry, looking every part the diplomat.

Four years after a failed presidential bid and amid a race for a fifth Senate term this fall, Kerry's moves have prompted some questions:

_Is the Massachusetts Democrat positioning himself to be secretary of state in a potential Barack Obama administration?

_Could a Kerry appointment create not one but two Senate openings in Massachusetts, assuming Sen. Edward Kennedy cannot complete his term after being diagnosed last week with brain cancer?

Kerry aides insist he's not angling for the job and point to his long involvement in foreign affairs. It started with his famous testimony as a 27-year-old veteran questioning the Vietnam War before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It continues today, at age 64, as the No. 3 Democrat on the same panel.

But envisioning him in the post would hardly be a stretch given Obama's chances at securing the Democratic nomination, a general election shaping up as a "change" campaign and Kerry's relationship with the Illinois senator.

Kerry would likely face competition from Sen. Joseph R. Biden of Delaware, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee; Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, a former Peace Corps volunteer who also sits on the panel, and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, a top Obama adviser.

Over the weekend, Kerry wrote a Washington Post op-ed column chastising President Bush and John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, for criticizing Obama after he said that, as president, he would be willing to negotiate with U.S. opponents such as Iran.

In recent weeks, the Senate has also passed Kerry-sponsored resolutions seeking humanitarian aid for Burma and Robert Mugabe to step aside as president of Zimbabwe, while Kerry has filed legislation to remove South African President Nelson Mandela from U.S. terrorist watch lists.

The senator invited Blair to this island getaway last weekend so they could discuss the Middle East and climate change.

"John Kerry would love to end his career as secretary of state. It would be a capstone to a life that has always been devoted to public service, but in particular has been focused on foreign affairs," said Jeffrey Berry, a political science professor at Tufts University.

Kerry helped Obama burst on the national stage by selecting the then-Senate candidate to deliver the keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. And he endorsed Obama over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton even though she had just won the New Hampshire primary.

Yet an Obama spokesman kept a respectful distance from questions about a potential Cabinet appointment.

"Senator Obama appreciates his close friendship with Senator Kerry, his service to this country and his early support for our campaign. It is obviously far too early to even speculate about the makeup of an Obama administration _ as we are still in a nomination fight _ but with his depth of expertise, especially on issues of foreign policy, Senator Kerry would be on the short list for anyone's Cabinet," said spokesman Bill Burton.

Kerry aides recoiled at the question, fearful it would renew criticism the senator has his eyes anywhere but on his homestate constituents.

The issue has taken on added sensitivity in an election year in which Kerry faces at least one Republican opponent, and amid questions about Kennedy's health.

Were Kennedy unable to complete his term, Kerry would face pressure to assume the role of a Democratic colleague many have dubbed the state's "go-to guy" in Washington. Senate vacancies in Massachusetts are filled by special election. While the state is heavily Democratic, it has a history of electing moderate Republicans to high office.

"Senator Kerry is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate, where he was recently ranked the twelfth-most powerful member," said spokesman David Wade. "He looks forward to continuing to chair the Middle East subcommittee, where he's focused on the war in Iraq and security in the region. The only job he has his sights on is the one he already holds and he plans to stay right there."

Foreign affairs provided a flashpoint in Kerry's presidential campaign. While the senator voted in October 2002 to authorize military action against Iraq if necessary, he criticized Bush for failing to expand allied support for the March 2003 invasion.

Later, during an October 2004 debate, Bush criticized Kerry for saying military action should pass a "global test" of legitimacy within the U.S. and among its allies.

Obama will probably name 2 supreme court justices. Tell may need to be younger, though, to balance Alito, and Chief Justice whats-his-name.

It never ceases to amaze me that the major media outlets and their purportedly expert political analysts continue to float speculation that the Democrats would even consider pulling several powerful Senators out of Congress to serve in an Obama Administration. It's as if these genius pundits aren't familiar with any qualified prospective cabinet members who haven't been regulars in the media spotlight.

How many sitting Republican Congresspeople did Bush lure away from Capitol Hill to serve in his administration? How many sitting Democrats did Bill Clinton pluck from the legislature? This simply doesn't happen. Neither party cannibalizes its Congressional caucuses to fill positions in the Executive Branch.

Why we even bother listening to these bobble-headed media morons is a mystery to me. Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Kerry, and Webb are ALL staying in the Senate if/when Obama is elected president, and that includes the VP position.

I have long learned that the MSM are only interested in their own sense of self importance. There are but a few things that I see or read in the media that I believe.

Freedom of the Press is entrenched in the Constitution, but the Media is fast making that fact obsolete. They are neither free nor fair.

Biden would be better as SoS, but since Biden should be the VP that will open up the SoS position. It could go to Kerry or Richardson, but if not Biden then this could be one of the major cabinet position where Obama should appoint a Republican and if so it would be Lugar. If not a Repub for SoS then it'll be Hagel for SoD.

The idea that these powerful committee chairmen would want to give those positions up when they are finally about to get some workable majorities in Congress is pretty ridunkulous. They guys are sitting in the catbird seat; you will have to pry them out with crowbars.

Kerry probably isn't the right guy but then who is?

Name one single person in this racket who has articulated a foreign policy for the 21st century. He doesn't exist, to my knowledge.

What has anybody done about Chinese pollution? Nothing. Absolutely zip. The Chinese produce goods for the entire planet and yet nobody places the slightest demand on them despite the obvious leverage we have in the situation.

Beijing is unlivable because of the pollution. Pollution has a tendency of floating around and doing damage to the whole planet.

Name one person who has suggested a comprehensive peace plan for the mid east (except for me). Once again, he doesn't exist. The big issue seems to be if we should talk to Hamas, an organization that would be irrelevant to any serious foreign policy player who views sovereign nations as the masters of the planet's destiny.

It doesn't look good, no matter who gets elected. The corruption has seeped into the foreign policy DNA and we are probably condemned to the usual course of imperial degeneracy.

It will probably be one of Obama's foreign policy advisors, Susan Rice.

Obama will probably choose a real life expert and diplomat over a politician.

I can see Kerry saluting and "Reporting for duty"!!

First he could pledge to the world that just as he said when running for President, he would apply some kind of "World approval" test before doing anything that might upset anyone in the world.

Then he could explain to all the conservative pro-US world leaders elected since he wasn not, like Sarcozy, Merkel, Berlusconi, and Brown, why they should bother to listen to him.

If we get really lucky, he could build a new "Winter Soldier" Party and run for President again!

The labor party is almost gone, (including HuffPo crowd favorite "Red" Ken Livingston) and Brown is unashamedly pro-American, and therefore hated by American "progressives".

How about:

VP: Daschle--old pro, grownup (alternate: sibelius)
SoS: Biden--knows what he's doing, smart, the anti-Condie
SoD: Hagel--send bipartisan message, not an idiot
AG: Edwards--if he'll do it
NSA: Richardson--consolation prize for State, ditto

Personally, I don't care for Daschle. A woman on the ticket might be too much this year {I don't know if America is ready for Obama and a female]; we're still a young country]. How about Gov Ted Strickland of Ohio, or possibly Jim Webb though I've read some cons on him for VP on HuffPo; how about Wes Clark? Oh, it's exciting, there are some real people out there. I would go for Hagel for a cabinet position, but not VP [he's still very republican and conservatve on a lot of issues]. I'd like to see John Edwards somewhere in the Administration also. Okay, I'm rambling...signing off.

Got news for you, heal, Daschle may be soft, but he isn't a woman. Edwards is the only woman on the list if you only count time and money spent on hairdos.

In fact Hillary looks like a man compared to the Breck Girl.

Daschle makes no sense. He's a consigliere, doesn't deliver any states or shore up any of Obama's weaknesses.

The rest of your list doesn't make much sense.

John Kerry as Secretary of State? Given his record of quitting and running home crying when things get a bit rough (e.g. the 2004 Ohio vote count) I think this country could do a whole lot better.

It's doubtful. First of all, the Democrats can't afford to lose two Senate seats in a major blue state like MA. Second, if voters think Kerry will leave his Senate seat to be Sec of State, then why bother voting for him for a 5th term? I suspect this is a rumor that's been started by his Republican rival. Plant the idea that Kerry isn't serious about staying in the Senate and people will be less likely to vote for him. I just can't imagine Kerry taking a Cabinet position, not after coming so close to becoming the President. That would be tough to work for a President, go to The White House, and constantly see what you came so close to getting for yourself.

The one who's in REAL danger of losing a Senate seat is Hillary Clinton.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:37 PM on 05/28/2008

I think you are correct. The only Dem. that I plan on voting for who did not support Hillary Clinton is John Lewis here in Ga. And the only reason I will vote for him is because he started out supporting Senator Clinton, his long time friend, and then changed his support when he and his family starting receiving strong arm tactics from the black political machine here in Ga. Truth be told, I'll bet if the Super's are allowed a secret ballot, he will STILL vote for Clinton.

There are a plethora of terrific people for Obama to call on. I hope and believe that they will all be called on to support the Obama administration in marked ways. We are very fortunate in Kerry, Biden, Daschle, Dodd, Richardson, Kennedy, Pelosi, McCaskill and many others. It will be good to see how it all plays out. Don't forget that key players on key committees in the House and Senate can be extremely valuable too. Conyers at the head of the judiciary committee could become key in the clean up that is needed. The ideas have to be created, but they also have to be implemented. Nancy Pelosi will be worth her weight in gold in the House for instance. Also, Mrs. Clinton could be extremely helpful. Her national recognition and high profile could be effectively used to bring country wide attention to particular bills and efforts. The democrats have a strong team and a good agenda. With Obama at the helm, we stand to begin the hard work of restoring the American dream to more Americans.
