MILAN, Italy — First it was the film and the book. Now the next stop for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is opera.

La Scala officials say the Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been commissioned to produce an opera on the international multiformat hit for the 2011 season at the Milan opera house. The composer is currently artistic director of the Arena in Verona.

La Scala also announced Thursday that Daniele Gatti will conduct next season's gala premiere of Verdi's "Don Carlo" on Dec. 7.

Now, I love Al and I liked his movie, but this is a bad idea.

Opera existed because people didn't have microphones and amplifiers. It hangs around only so rich people can have something which gets supported by public money.

There is no bad cheese. There is no good opera.

What I will never understand is how people can claim to be Opera lovers irrespective of whether the opera is in a language they know. What other medium legitimizes appreciation when you admittedly aren't even getting a major level for which it was originally intended? That's like a deaf Elvis fan (no disrespect to deaf people).

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:50 PM on 05/29/2008

When you go to the opera there are usually supertitles which translate the text.

Even so, for me most of the appeal is the music.

Do humans preclude monkeys?; the printing press and computers preclude monks and writing?; iPODS, records?, etc., etc. Should we assume those advancements negate the value of the latter? NO!..discriminatory thought and analysis would suggest opera is not precluded by modernity. Science and anthropology substantiate the same about monkeys and humans! Apple stock~vs~Tower Records should convince anyone records are a lost art, but how many of us have prized collections? Letter-writing?..quill pen and ink sales are higher than most would imagine!

I'm glad we have opera, as well as microphones and amplifiers. I may not be convinced about this particular opera, but I'm definitely convinced that I'm not a rich person who just wants to enjoy opera because it is supported by public money. The language issue noted by another commenter? It's the music and feeling that transcends the words..a story set in Japanese wartime, with geishas and American soldiers, in Italian? Madama Butterfly is beautiful and heart-breaking, no-matter the language. Isn't that the case with all music?
Sure, we come to love/ hate the words, but it's the music that touches us first!

And, there is BAD CHEESE..just ask anyone from France living in the U.S.!

Public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. (He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself.

Then there is the troubling matter of his energy use. In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy. In Nashville, similar programs exist. Utility customers must simply pay a few extra pennies per kilowatt hour, and they can continue living their carbon-neutral lifestyles knowing that they are supporting wind energy. Plenty of businesses and institutions have signed up. Even the Bush administration is using green energy for some federal office buildings, as are thousands of area residents.

But according to public records, there is no evidence that Gore has signed up to use green energy in either of his large residences. When contacted Wednesday, Gore's office confirmed as much but said the Gores were looking into making the switch at both homes. Talk about inconvenient truths.

The "War on Global Warming" or whatever it's termed, is, in many ways, the antipodal complementary twin to the "Global War on Terror". Both are control mechanisms generated to manipulate gullible populations into giving up their civil liberties and to accept, under the rubric of an exterior threat, a reduction in their standard of living. Notice that the global elites-like Al Gore-are preaching to others about radical changes in lifestyle, reduction in consumption, "cutting down", "austerity", etc. Yet it is always somebody else whose lifestyle has to change-not Al Gore's, or Maurice Strong's, or Richard Branson's, etc.
There is definitely a place in government for the proactive protection of the environment. I believe it was the founder of Greenpeace who just recently said that nuclear power represents the future of energy production. He also agreed that the conservation/ecology movement has been replaced by what has become a virtual religion of nature worship and human degradation. It is better known as eco-fascism, and one of its aims is to reduce the standard of living of everybody outside the global elite to the subsistence level. That way, the middle and lower classes of this earth can serve as wage slaves, "coolies" and cannon fodder for the mega wealthy .09%

OK this is the first criticism yet that rises above the "are you smarter than a fifth grader" mentality. It deserves a considered response.

My biggest criticism with Gore's movie was he mostly calls on individuals to do all the work, when really it is corporations and governments that have to power to change things, or not. That really is a very large and puzzling missing link in the movie.

1. The War on Global Warming is not how this is termed. You're argument would be strengthened if it were, but that's simply not the case.

2. Civil liberties are not imperilled by reducing global warming. Again, your argument would be strengthened if it were, but no one has argued that freedom of speech is in jeopardy if things go green.

However, overall, you may have a point. After all, if the vast majority of "us" were carbon neutral, the super-wealthy would be free to consume to the point of gluttony and the earth would not be in peril. So what should we do about it?

The CO2 Science is sound. There is no Theory of CO2 for Idiots to rail against. Venus has around the same concentration of CO2 that Mars has but in an atmosphere that is much denser. Venus has a runaway Greenhouse effect

Care to expand with an analysis of the planet Venus' atmosphere?

Do please include how, compared to Mars, Venus is only a little closer to the sun. Also include an analysis of how Mars' atmosphere is very very thin compared to earth's, so 90% means 90% of not a whole lot.

Not really a comparison at all. CO2 is just one factor governing planet temperature and probably not as important as heat from the sun or even water vapor. Scientists have not figured out climate on Earth yet, let alone Mars.

I am as "liberal" or "progressive" as anyone and think Al Gore is a Carbon Trading scam artist Global Warming profiteer. Kucinich was my 1st choice for the Dem nomination and Edwards my 2nd.

Carbon Trading is a World Bank/NWO etc scam to keep a death grip on underdeveloped countries. Don't drink the Global Warming Kool-Aid. Oil is also not a fossil fuel. That is an old theory that has been disproven. The "Peak Oil", China and India demand explosion nonsense is justification for all type of global shenanigans.

Hydrocarbons that are found on Earth are also found in abundance on moons of nearby planets in our solar system. Search on "hydrocarbons moon" and see for yourself about Titan and Hyperion. Were there dinosaurs there?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:08 PM on 05/29/2008

Regardless of the origins of hydrocarbons, the pertinent question is whether pumping literally tons of it into the atmosphere is a good idea or not.

Your ability to sidestep the real matter by focusing on dinosaurs/not dinosaurs is rather disingenous, to say the very least.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:11 PM on 05/29/2008

My point on hydrocarbons was that they are not the product of dinosaur carcasses and that crude oil is not necessarily scarce or close to depletion as the China & India demand storytellers would have us believe. I believe your point was about the byproduct of burning hydrocarbons which is CO2.

Plants require CO2. Maybe the answer is to increase CO2 consuming plants (as well as increasing fuel efficiency & electric cars). I think plastic in our oceans is a bigger problem than "global warming". When I see certain individuals or organizations pushing the "global warning", carbon trading agenda my BS Alarm is automatically triggered.

If the "World Bank" extortionists (who accepted Paul Wofowitz as its front man) are for Carbon Trading you know there is something nefarious about it. An Inconvenient Truth was A Convenient Nap for me and I have Chemistry degree. We are supposed to swallow that argument whole without any diessenting opinion presented for balance.

The Carbon trading idea is a scam, you're 100% right. I don't know if Al Gore is a true believer or an opportunist, but I do know that there is a right way and wrong way of going about improving the environment. The right way involves technology, building new, cleaner power plants (nuclear power is certainly the most efficient alternative), construction of electric, high speed passenger rail as a viable alternative to traffic, noise, and gridlock, ending wasteful boondoggles like ethanol subsidies, encourage a small/family farm renaissance, etc.
The wrong way involves manipulating people's fears, treating the vast majority of human beings as "useless eaters" (the dirty secret of the eco-fascist movement), asking the middle and lower classes to give up their hopes of upward mobility, economic progress, etc., so that the global elite can continue to enjoy its sybaritic lifestyles unencumbered by any imperative of economic justice or social responsibility.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:47 PM on 05/29/2008

There are some very sad characters reading the post judging from the "comments."
I have great admiration and respect for the former VP and for the work he is doing on the environment. Perhaps if some of you sarcastic fools had supported him more, we would not be paying $4.00+ per gallon to the Middle East with no end in sight. As this goes on and our economy struggles, you can feel real good about yourselves because you are so insightful and intelligent.
I would have paid $4.00/gallon after 9/11 to spend the extra funds to research alternative fuels and get this country on the right track. Now we are stuck with it forever, stuck in Iraq for what looks like forever and our environment, water and air quality and supply are dwindling.
As far as an opera, I can't imagine it, but it's not a reason to mock Al Gore. Some people don't need much of an excuse to act like morons I guess.

Why the big rush with NAFTA? How many Corporations got help to move their operations OVERSEAS with U.S. Taxpayers Dollars ? Why the big move?

Many had patents that were running out! They knew someone would make their product overseas. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE THEM! But they billed the American Taxpayer for the move!

Keep watching Faux Opinion Network, where you obviously get your information from. For the slow minded Faux watchers, if we had invested in alternative fuels starting in 2001 when Al Gore should have taken the Presidency, we would already be reaping the beginning benefits of those sources and oil and gas would only be part of the fuels that America requires.
Cleaning up the air and water could actually create good jobs and the research and manufacture of alternative fuels would do the same. There are areas where clean coal and possibly some nuclear sources would be beneficial in the short term, possibly longer.
Almost an entire decade wasted now because of the oil cartel in OUR White House. How's that oil from Iraq working out? Pee brains.
I would like my son and my eventual grandchildren to be able to be outdoors someday without asthma induced from fossil fuel pollution and have plenty of drinking water that is safe.
America can do great things when it puts it's heart into it. We have had no leadership on these issues for eight years. What a shame.

another Al Gore disciple complaining about gas prices .... Priceless.
you're either devoid of principles, devoid of an ability to reason, or both.

CO2 lags temperature. Gore's own charts reveal this.

Here's some more facts for you p*ssies, CO2 constitutes less than 1% of the atmosphere, (some suggest as little as .05%), of which Man contributes less than 5%... just plain goofy, but again, this is a great issue, it's a glimpse of the how communism came into being. Just ask the former Czech Pres.

AND WHY HAS THERE NEVER BEEN A PUBLIC DEBATE?!
