Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" Becoming An Opera

MILAN, Italy — First it was the film and the book. Now the next stop for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is opera.

La Scala officials say the Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been commissioned to produce an opera on the international multiformat hit for the 2011 season at the Milan opera house. The composer is currently artistic director of the Arena in Verona.

La Scala also announced Thursday that Daniele Gatti will conduct next season's gala premiere of Verdi's "Don Carlo" on Dec. 7.

I've always disliked the term "global warming" as it leads to statements like this. It's more accurately described as an accelerated climate change due to increased heat retention that serves to make all conditions more extreme. So in essence: hot seasons get hotter, cold seasons colder, and the combined effect serves to throw species dependent on the earth's seasonal rhythms out of whack.

Want an example of how much the slightest change in temperature can ruin an ecosystem? Take a look at coral bleaching.

Point is, the issue is MUCH more complicated than "it's gonna get hot" and the fact that people point to a brutaly cold winter as evidence that climate change isn't real shows that our schools and media aren't doing a good enough job of conveying the scientific groundwork behind the theory. And yes, like gravity, relativity and the speed of light once were, "global warming" is just a scientific theory at this point, albeit with an abundance of empirical data showing that something out of the ordinary is going on.

But what the hell do I know I'm just a biologist...
