WASHINGTON — Top Democratic leaders intend to push for a quick end to the battle for the presidential nomination when primaries are over next week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday, adding that he, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and party chairman Howard Dean will urge uncommitted delegates to choose sides.

"By this time next week, it will all be over give or take a day," Reid said of the marathon race between the front-running Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama is within 44 delegates of clinching the nomination, according to The Associated Press tally, and leads Clinton by roughly 200 delegates.

Democratic officials said Pelosi already has begun contacting uncommitted House members urging them to weigh in soon after the primary season ends. Numerous Democrats have expressed concern that a protracted nominating campaign could harm the party's chances of winning the White House in the fall. John McCain effectively wrapped up the Republican nomination in March.

Tantalizingly close to the nomination, Obama stands to gain a minimum of roughly 20 delegates in remaining primaries in Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota under party rules that distribute them proportional to the popular vote _ even if he loses all three. He would need to enlist the support of uncommitted superdelegates to amass the rest.

Slightly fewer than 200 superdelegates remain uncommitted, including 64 members of Congress.

One, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the Democratic whip in the House, was quoted in a report published Thursday as saying he intended to disclose his preference as the final primaries are held on Tuesday.

Clyburn, who is black and whose district and state voted overwhelmingly for Obama, is widely expected to support the Illinois senator.

Asked about the story in the Stamford Advocate, Kristie Greco, a spokeswoman for Clyburn, noted that he repeatedly has said he will not endorse before June 3.

Although Obama holds a commanding lead in delegates, Clinton has threatened to campaign into the August convention if she is not satisfied with the results of a party committee meeting this weekend. A Democratic National Committee panel is scheduled to discuss the fate of disputed delegations from Michigan and Florida, two states that held primaries last winter in defiance of party rules.

Reid, in an interview on radio station KGO in San Francisco, said he had talked since Wednesday with both Pelosi and Dean. "We agree there won't be a fight at the convention. ... We're going to urge folks to make a decision quickly _ next week."

Reid said the results of the disputed primaries in Florida and Michigan "should be counted as well," but he did not propose a compromise to resolve the controversy.

He made his prediction that the nominating fight would be settled by the end of next week in a speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.

Karen Finney, a spokeswoman for Dean, said that in his conversation with Reid, the chairman said he wants the nominating campaign settled in June.

Pelosi has also said she hopes the nominating contest is wrapped up quickly.

Speaker and convention chairperson Nancy Pelosi says this will be settled by mid June. Period. End of story. The HRC campaign may think they can take this on to the convention, but that will turn out to be their worst nightmare. Advice to HRC: Follow Pelosi's lead and remove yourself from this campaign at the indicated time if you have not won it and while you still have a chance to hang on to your career.

Speaker Pelosi should rot in hell. Where has she been in getting something done about ending the Iraq war she continues to fund. She's totally worthless.

I beg to differ. I think what we are seeing happen with millions of new registrations and the self-destruction of the republican strategist and power base (I say strategist because i have good friends that are republican so i can't say that they are all bad consider the despicable dems as of late).

If Nancy would have pick a big fight and attempted to impeach the president, stop funding etc. the republicans would now have something to run on, they would have a reason to oppose and criticize the dems as being partisan.

It isn't over, this is what people mean by a strategic plan. City planners talk about all the time. Strategically speaking, not only should you have a 1 year plan of action, you should have a 5 year strategy as well. It appears that we may we seeing the slow unfolding of a strategy executed with disciplined patients.

Or maybe I am just delusional and the above is a bunch crap that I only wish about the stupid dems.

This is becoming like a great soap opera and I really enjoy reading various posts here. I hope there are some people left in the government to do real jobs because most people are probably distracted with this endless charade. We will never meet a woman like Clinton again in our lifetime. Called me sexist, but a woman with multiple personalities like Clinton is probably the most dangerous manipulative politician you would ever face! She reminds me of Tseu Hi Empress of China!

Has politics become so much about just the politics that we've forgotten the issues that politicians are supposed to be dealing with? Such as homelessness.

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REPUG TROLLS AND HILLARY FANATICS:

1. Repug Trolls insist they'll only vote for Hillary, Hillary Fanatics insist they'll vote for McCain.

2. Repug Trolls call Obama Supporters "Kool Aid Drinkers", Hillary Fanatics call Obama Supporters "Sexist Kool Aid Drinkers".

3. Repug Trolls smugly claim Obama can't win. Hillary Fanatics hopefully claim Obama can't win.

4. Repug Trolls offer ridiculous statements as facts, Hillary Fanatics say that Hillary can still win.

5. Repug Trolls use uncreative simple-minded usernames to "fool" others, like RichLiberal, IM4CLINTON and IMNOTAREPUGTROLLREALLY. Hillary Fanatics use more personal usernames like AnninCA, JayinNY and SueinDenial.

whizzer got scrubbed, but he mentioned Saul Alinsky, which made me think of Hillary's hidden thesis:

Hillary's campaign strategy is based on her thesis:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17388372/page/2/

ALINSKY's RULES FOR RADICALS
"Personalize it"

Saul Alinsky's rules of power tactics, excerpted from his 1971 book "Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals"

1. Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.

2. Never go outside the experience of your people.

3. Whenever possible go outside the experience of the enemy.

4. Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.

5. Ridicule is man's most potent weapon.

6. A good tactic is one that your people enjoy.

7. A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.

8. Keep the pressure on.

9. The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.

10. Maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.

11. If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

12. The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

13. Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

Hillary takes full accountability for nothing, so i won't be holding my breath

This isn't even a fight between her and the party..at this late stage, after all the missteps and Shakespearian decline of the Clinton name, this is a fight between her husband's legacy and the party.

the democratic nominee will be decided once and for all on june 3, provided obama manages to wrap up his remaining needed delegates, which i think he will and handily. today is may 29. five more days. as democrats, is our party really too weak to withstand just five more days as the process plays out?

on both sides this has for the most part been an ugly campaign season. but the stakes are entirely too high not to unite behind WHOEVER the democratic nominee is. it isn't just the white house, it's the congress and the supreme court. it's foreign diplomacy, healthcare, employment and bringing the manufacturing base back home where it belongs.

most of all, it means driving the criminals from power and putting in place democratic officials, with whom there is at least a snowball's chance in hell of prosecution and trials.

our country deserves better than what it's getting right now.

Regardless of what happens on June 3rd, this is wrapped up and Obama has moved on.
He's shifted his focus to John McCain, while still being respectful of Hillary; and that's probably the right way to go.
At the end of the day, all this Hillary nonsense will be over, and Obama can do what he needs to do to get where he's supposed to be; The White House.

whizkid is one of these:

1. A kid out to troll a group for kicks.
2. A loser with no life, with nothing better to do than hurl insults.
3. A ditto head programmed by Rush Limbaugh.
4. A white supremacist scared to death at the prospect of a black President.
5. A Clinton backer too bitter to think straight.
6. All of the above.

The Democratic Leaders are only saying Enough is Enough......The Hillary Sharade has gone on long enough. The fact that we are finally going to be relieved of a White House which has continuously made up the rules over the last 8 years, and now we have a candidate who feels "Entitled" to do the same and change party rules as she seems fit. It is why the term "attempting to move the goal lines" is so often atributed to the Clintons. It's of course because in their eyes, they are self appointed royalty.

Bill and Hills only agenda are THEMSELVES........Everyone else can eat cake(or worse!)
