NEW YORK — The gasoline price record keeps getting broken with each passing day. AAA puts the national average for a gallon of regular at a record $3.95. It's jumped 35 cents in the past month and is 76-cents-a-gallon higher than a year ago.

If you need premium, it's also never been more expensive. The auto club says the national average for premium is $4.35. That's an 84-cent-a-gallon jump over last year.

Oil prices fell back Thursday ahead of a report expected to show U.S. inventories of crude and petroleum products grew last week.

Prices remained volatile, though, buffeted about by threats against Nigerian oil facilities, worries about falling gasoline demand in the U.S. and a strengthening U.S. dollar.

By midday in Europe, light, sweet crude contract for July delivery was down 65 cents at $130.38 a barrel in electronic trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In London, July Brent crude fell 86 cents to $130.07 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

The Nymex July contract dipped below $126 a barrel Wednesday in New York before recovering to finish at $131.03, up $2.18. At its low in the floor session, oil was more than $9 off the record high it hit last week above $135 a barrel.

"Fears that soaring oil prices could damage demand continue to weigh on sentiment," said a report from research firm JBC Energy in Vienna, Austria.

The reversal from the floor session's close came with a renewed strengthening of the dollar and ahead of the U.S. Energy Department's inventory report, to be released later Thursday.

In the last couple of days, the dollar has rebounded against both the euro and yen, receiving some support Wednesday when the U.S. Commerce Department said orders to American factories for big-ticket manufactured goods fell by a smaller-than-expected amount in April.

That was taken as a possible signal of a rebound in the slumping U.S. manufacturing sector and the dollar strengthened back above the 105 yen level, while the euro dropped below $1.56.

When the dollar declines, investors tend to buy commodities such as oil as a hedge against inflation. But a stronger dollar makes oil more expensive to investors dealing in other currencies, and the tendency usually reverses.

Also, a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy research arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., indicated that U.S. crude oil stocks were expected to have grown 750,000 barrels in the week ended May 23.

The Platts survey also indicated analysts were expecting a build in U.S. gasoline stock of 400,000 barrels, and a build in distillate stocks, which include heating oil and diesel fuel, of 800,000 barrels.

Prices were still being supported, though, by further threats against Nigerian oil facilities. Those threats led investors in the U.S. to at least temporarily set aside concerns about falling gasoline demand.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian rebel group The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta threatened new attacks on oil installations to mark the one-year anniversary of President Umaru Yar'Adua's inauguration. A weekend attack by the group on an oil facility cut about 130,000 barrels of the nation's oil production, according to Addison Armstrong, director of market research at Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut, in a research note.

News of disruptions in Nigeria, one of Africa's largest producers and a major U.S. supplier, have helped push oil prices higher over the past year.

That contended Wednesday with the growing belief that U.S. demand for gasoline is falling as the average retail pump prices approaches $4 a gallon ($1.05 per liter). That belief was supported by two new surveys showing Americans consuming less gasoline.

Demand for gasoline fell 5.5 percent last week compared to the same week last year, according to the weekly MasterCard SpendingPulse survey. The survey also found that, on average, demand over the past four weeks is off 6.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

A separate CreditCards.com survey of about 1,000 people found that more than half have cut back on their driving due to high fuel prices.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures fell 2.08 cents to $3.8035 a gallon while gasoline prices were down 1.31 cents to $3.4345 a gallon. Natural gas futures rose 1.9 cents to $12.014 per 1,000 cubic feet.

AmmoBob and others have been saying that taxes on gas are 47 cents/g and profits are 8 cent/g. This is incorrect.

Taxes average 40 cents/gallon

Profits average 8.3 PERCENT or about 33 cents/gallon

American consumers of gasoline are going to keep getting gouged as long as they allow themselves to be gouged. We need to stand up and take a stand. I propose that we have a national; drive-free day--like meatless Thursdays during World War II.

We've been warned to buy American oil. It is more expensive than that which is imported! Ya gonna tell me we don't have a bunch of greedy, lying corporations and CEO's in this country? Ya wanna put up with this? Don't count on it to stop when Bush gets out of office. Too many people outside of government are also enjoying nine- and ten-figure annual incomes w/o paying income taxes.

American Oil is more expensive than imported oil, how do you figure that? It is a worldwide commodity, it is here, the royalties go to Americans, the $$ go to Americans all up and down the chain? Do you mean it is more expensive to produce here? That would be accurrate.

The price of crude is set on theworld marketbut it makes a dramatic impact on our national economy to produce domestic oil versus importing it.

Bottom line,...if the free market was allowed to operate without interference of governmental regulation, which Democrats have enacting for the last 35 years, gas would be 50 cents a gallon and the national economy and nations defenses would be subjected to the whims of those that control the supply of oil.

much thanks lefties... for more government control with no tangible result...can't wait to see the new weaknesses this global hoax imposes on our nation.... just keep believing what these liberal freaks are selling and before too long this nation will be on its knees....

Deregulation zealot and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm, is John McCain"s economic advisior, and active banking lobbyist. Senator Gramm is responsible for the what"s lovingly called the Gramm / Enron loophole in the energy bill past in 2001, as a result of the Cheney"s fascist secret energy task force and we all know what Enron did, screwing their customers and investors alike. Gramm was also very tight with Ken Lay, as was the Administration. Gramm"s finger prints are all over the current housing crisis. There will be hearings next week in the Senate and Gramm"s name will come up. Just think of the current energy price run up as Enron on a national scale. Considering Phil Gramm was on McCain"s short list for Energy Secretary, as was Ken Lay was with the current criminals running the country, I would not put to much confidence in John McCain"s judgment.

PS. The oil price run up is not a supply and demand issue, although energy independence is a good thing, oil consumption has been flat since the 80"s and the rise of China accounts for only 2.5% of oil consumption. In a recent Senate hearing the out the going CEO of Shell, when asked how much the barrel cost of oil should be, he responded $50 to $60 a barrel, so something is rotten in River City.

To those environmental fundamentalists out there, screw you. In America, gas is more of a necessity to get to work, go food shopping, to do much of anything in America. For example, I live in Las Vegas. Using public transportation, the estimated time to travel one mile is.... ONE HOUR using CAT-Bus. So stop gleefully cheering high gas prices. Hard-working Americans are suffering while your moderately well off ass is tooling around in a hybrid much too expensive thanr the average American can afford.

Now, in Europe, I'm pretty much anywhere in a city in about forty-five minutes. I enjoy public transportation. And there are lots of pretty women on public transportation. Yeah, I know... sexist. Get over it. I admire women. And, after using public transportation in Europe, I lost fifty-five pounds in four months. Imagine that, public transportation as a weight-loss plan. Well, that and eating salads with tomatoes that lack the flavor of crap.

Another item of point, there are twice as many fat people in America than in Europe. Oh, and gas is way more expensive over there. And public transportation is efficient, ubiquitous, and inexpensive. Oh, and on inter-city trips, some buses even have stewardesses.

Alas, America has no public transportation system of note in most areas. Our cities are so spread out with suburban sprawl. You know, those urban areas with cookie-cutter homes on postage stamp lots? Why do we settle for this?

Yes Las Vegas where they put the lightbulbs on the outside of the building. Genius.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:19 PM on 05/29/2008

The reason for the high gas prices in Europe is the taxes they levee on gas. These taxes go to support the public transportation that is so good. Also, you can go from country to country on the train whereas in the U.S. you can't even go from state to state on the train.

Also, there are twice as many fat people in America because in Europe they banned the use of high fructose corn syrup in their foods. The corps. use it because it is a little bit cheaper than using sugar. And we all know that the corps. rule the U.S.

I live in a very rural area where we have no mass transit, not even taxi cabs. My child's school is eight miles from our home and her school bus comes at 6:30 each morning to get her to school by 8:00, then in the afternoon, rides another hour and a half to get home. . Our closest Grocery store is 10 miles away, so driving is not a choice, but a necessity. Many of us who live in these rural communities have only one or two gas stations within a reasonable distance from our homes. It is not simply a matter of choice.

I am old enough to remember the gas crisis of the 1970's and remember when stations had to sell their entire tank inventory before changing the price.

. I have watched prices in my small rural community change as many as three times a day , knowing full well that it is the same gas they purchased ,

Agree with you 100%, man!
Just a point to add - in the US people talk about alternative fuels, in Europe they use them. Just like garlic - people like garlic in the US but they don't eat it.
Most gasoline cars in Europe for 20 years now are retrofitted with natural gas, most diesel cars for 5 years now are retrofitted with methane. Try finding a cab that burns gasoline or diesel oil there - and good luck!
So let's embrace our reality check - our wonderful country does not want us using alternative fuels, driving hybrid cars or going big on public transportation. They would never ever allow it to happen, period!
Even when all the rest of the world is driving alternative fuel cars, we will be talking of the great advancements of research and being the world leader in etc.etc. bull. Want proof - get on youtube - type in "air car" or "electric car" and see for yourself. And keep dreaming about hybridization in the US!

I foolishly let my motorcycle licence lapse 20 years ago. This morning I visited the DMV and started the paperwork to get a new one. Gasoline should be held at $4.00 a Gallon for regular and $4.50 for high test even if it has to be done artificially. Otherwise we'll never get the geniuses over at General Motors too stop cranking out those ridiculous SUV's. When I took my job 13 years ago I had one major criterion, that I be able to walk to work. Consequently right now if I drive my motorcycle that gets 50 miles to the gallon I'm not even feeling the rise in price. One co worker at my job bicycles to work everyday he's not feeling it either. My wife works five miles away from our house it's not bothering her a bit. Maybe it sounds like I'm gloating but don't you think these oil executives are gloating while they rake in Americans hard earned cash? The only difference is they have to keep the slurping down as they guzzle at the money stream and I don't.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:04 PM on 05/29/2008

Well, I for one hope that the production of SUV's continues. For some it's a necessity and I fall in that category. I can assure YOU that even if gas increases to $5 or $6 a gallon, I will continue to drive my SUV. If you want to walk, ride a bike or a camel that's your choice, but don't get mad at those who desire to purchase and drive SUV's.

Nobody NEEDS an SUV. Granted some need big cars or minivans (for big families) and homeowners need light pickup trucks. SUVS are nothing more than overweight dick-compensators. If you choose to drive an SUV, your demand for extra gas drives the price up for folk who drive fuel efficient vehicles, while their responsibility helps hold prices down for you. By the way... nice dig with the camel bit... shows where you're coming from.

There is absolutely NO RATIONAL REASON to have an SUV. If you need to haul a lot of stuff on a regular basis or tow a trailer, get a truck. If you don't, drive a car. I wish I had a buck for every time I've seen a two-ton Escalade or similar monstrosity being used to haul one 100-pound woman around. And I WILL get mad at the idiots who buy these things because (a) they are a menace to everybody else on the road and (b) they are helping drive up the price of gas for all the rest of us.

Those geniuses give Americans what they want. Do not blame them for the publics lack of enthusiasm for hybrids and small cars. They don't look as sexy as a big SUV. Companies such as GM would not exist if they did not cater to the publics wishes.

Now that Americans are feeling the pain at the pump, those mini's and hybrids are suddenly looking a whole lot sexier. Hell, I remember during the 2004 elections that a voter demographic targeted by politicians as critical was described as "moms who drive SUVs and support the war." War moms. Yeah, when gas was relatively cheap, no one cared about the future. Now we're bitchin' and moanin' , blaming other, for our lack of foresight.

We all want someone to blame for our collective ills. Look around. Look in the mirror. There is no one to blame but ourselves. The companies give us what we want. Our political system and the subsequent corruption is a reflection of our society. We elect the politicians.

So how dare you blame the "geniuses over at General Motors". They only gave most of America what Americans wanted. SUV's are ridiculous. I agree. And now, most Americans are flip-flopping their way over to hybrids and whatever else is fuel efficient.

Interesting that the first gasoline station pump was manufactured in 1885, and between 1885 and Jan 2001, gas prices only increased from $0 to $1.40 roughly. How long is that?? 116 years, lol, and people want us to believe that it's normal for gas to increase more than $3 a gallon in less than 8 years??

Hogwash, to put it in extreme nicety. ;)

Everyone knows, there is no oil/gas shortage. That's why the oil men testifying before Congress recently, didn't fall back on their tired old lies of not enough refineries, not enough supply, not enough storage, too many hurricanes, etc..... they said it was simply because they couldn't drill in Alaska.

That's what the propaganda machine for the last 2 years has been all about..... getting enough Americans who don't pay attention.... to get them ticked off and start raising hell to drill in Alaska national parks. ;)

All resources are finite. There is no shortage right now. There is, however, increasing demand. Add that to other factors such as the devaluation of the dollar (which does increase oil prices), speculation (manipulation), and future demand, prices will go up.

There is no one reason why oil prices keep sky-rocketing. Looking on the news, I see reports that mention only one factor. This is called "propaganda". Looking on the boards, I see too many posts that mention only one reason why gas prices are so high. That reason: "The (insert favorite enemy name here) is screwing me over."

Are Americans so uneducated that many are unable to grasp the fact that there are multiple reasons why gas prices are so high? Oh, and do yourself a favor, look at CAFE standards in China and Europe. Then compare gas mileages for the same vehicles produced by car manufacturers for sale here and overseas. Notice any differences?

There is no oil and gas shortage? Well things certainly had me fooled? There is no shortage for some folks, like the Arabs, Hugo, et al but we americans, in case you haven't noticed certainly have a shortage. I am amused everytime there is a new discovery in non-american areas of the world when the press reports that it should supply our needs for X years, leading folks to beileve that we have no worries that any supply anywhere helps us.

Unless it is a discovery in the USA, we will always be at risk and at the mercy of foreign producers. The Chinese, the Koreans and the japaneses are all actively seeking reservses on a global basis including purchased reserves and companies right here in our country (ex- Taylor Energy in the GOM just purchased by a korean co). I think the idea of a shortage depends on whether you are a net buyer or seller. We are a much larger buyer than we should be and it is time to conserve and develop our reserves here in the USA- yes that would be Alaska and all offshore areas where it is feasible and other onshore areas currently not accessible to our oil companies.

oil production has been flat since 2005
and demand continues to rise

so the price goes up

OPEC has new profit-incentive to raise output. Actually, if OPEC did raise output, emerging economies would quickly gobble up any increased production. This could lead to temporary price reductions in the short run, and accelerated increase in prices over and above what the world is experiencing today. Commiserate with such increased production also leads to faster depletion of world oil reserves.

Increased production will not solve this problem. And for those out there who count on science to solve energy problems? Shut up. The technology does not exist now and we may not find a solution for decades. We should be disgusted with those that promote increased consumption by telling us, "Science will figure out a solution." What if we don't?

Everyone shares in this blame. Consumers, companies, and your favorite blame-guy. Stop simple and start doing something about it other than mentioning the for your ills.

We all bought the oil-crack. We all snorted it through the nozzles at the gas-pusher stations. Don't blame the dealer for your habit. Do blame the dealer and the middle-men who manipulate the oil-crack prices and the oil--politicians who give oil-crackdealers incentives to keep pushing the product without increasing the purity (solutions) to the problems.

Oil producing nations = Raw suppliers. Oil companies = Smugglers. Gas Stations = That guy on the street corner working for the Smugglers while living with mom. You = Oil addicts. Politicians = "War on Drugs" = Failures.
