PIERRE, S.D. — The voters of South Dakota look a lot like those who have favored Hillary Rodham Clinton in presidential primaries this year, but her rival, front-runner Barack Obama, has plenty of friends in high places in this rural state.

Not quite the stone faces atop Mount Rushmore. But most Democrats who've won statewide elections, past and present, in predominantly Republican South Dakota have endorsed Obama. These include former Sens. George McGovern, himself the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972, and Tom Daschle, the ex-Senate majority leader, and both Democrats now in Congress, Sen. Tim Johnson and Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin.

In addition, the Illinois senator has used his substantial fundraising edge over Clinton to field a larger ground organization in this sparsely populated state, which allocates only 15 national convention delegates in its June 3 primary but offers a larger psychological prize.

The last two primaries in the Democratic race, South Dakota and neighboring Montana, whose voters will distribute 16 delegates the same day, provide a final opportunity to display vote-getting power that might sway uncommitted superdelegates nationwide. These elected and party officials, whose convention votes are not bound by any primary, will provide the nominee's final margin of victory unless the final three primaries put Obama over the top.

"South Dakota and Montana get to be players in that, determining what the final message of the primaries will be," said Robert Burns, chairman of political science at South Dakota State University.

"It's important that Obama win both of them to convince the holdout superdelegates that he can win in predominantly white states," Burns said. "I think it's equally important to Clinton to show that in the last two primaries, she comes out a winner and is deserving of further consideration by superdelegates."

Obama is generally considered to be narrowly ahead of the former first lady here even though South Dakota's demographics appear to favor her.

Straddling the line between Midwest and West, South Dakota is overwhelmingly rural with corn and soybeans in the east and rolling cattle ranches and the Black Hills in the west. The state is 88 percent white, consistently ranks last in the nation in annual average wages and has the eighth-largest percentage of residents older than 65. Clinton has handily won states with electorates like this, most recently Kentucky and West Virginia.

Story continues below

No independent polls have been released in recent weeks, and both campaigns call the South Dakota race close.

"It's really, really hard to tell which way it's going to go," said Elizabeth Smith, a political science professor at the University of South Dakota.

Obama spent a day in South Dakota, talking about his rural policies in a dirt-floored building in Watertown and drawing a huge crowd in Sioux Falls. He planned another visit this weekend.

Clinton has been a more frequent visitor, holding rallies in cities large and small as she focused on farm policy, the economy and health care. With a week to go, Clinton's campaign announced that either she, her husband, the former president, or their daughter, Chelsea, would be in South Dakota every day until the primary.

Clinton was running a radio ad to blunt the perception that Obama is all but certain to get the Democratic nomination. "Tuesday we can show 'em. We can pick a president," the ad's narrator said.

Obama, meanwhile, was running ads emphasizing his message of change. Obama ads featuring Daschle described Obama as coming from a family of modest means with "the same values as most South Dakotans."

Both candidates highlighted their support of the farm bill and pledged support for ethanol and other fuels made from crops and for using wind to generate electrical power.

Smith and Burns, the political science professors, said endorsements and organization could give Obama the edge.

Obama opened nine campaign offices around the state; Clinton, six.

Rick Hauffe, South Dakota Democratic Party executive director, marveled at the size of Obama's campaign staff. "They are muscling it. They are working it hard."

Daschle, who dominated the Democratic Party in the state for more than two decades, was an early Obama supporter, and many former Daschle staffers now work for Obama in South Dakota.

Smith said Clinton may be able to catch up, but Obama seems to have more "troops on the ground."

"I think the experienced politicians and the experienced networks are on the Obama team, and that could very well make a difference," Smith said.

Obama has been endorsed by six of South Dakota's seven superdelegates. McGovern, who is not a superdelegate, switched his endorsement from Clinton to Obama in early May and said she should drop out because she had virtually no chance of winning the nomination.

American Indians make up South Dakota's largest minority group, more than 8 percent of the population, and traditionally vote for Democrats. Both candidates have issued detailed plans for economic development, improved health care and education for reservations, which have staggeringly high unemployment rates.

Before Obama appeared at a Sioux Falls rally, he met privately with leaders from all Lakota Sioux tribes in South Dakota.

Both Clinton and her husband have spent a lot of time campaigning on reservations. Clinton could benefit from her husband's visit to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1999 when he was president.

"The Clinton name is known on South Dakota reservations. I would suspect she may very well have an edge there," Smith said.

The role race will play in South Dakota's primary is uncertain, Smith said. Blacks make up slightly more than 1 percent of the population.

"Most South Dakotans would be very proud to say they're not racially discriminatory in any way. Whether that's true or not, we really don't know," Smith said. "We haven't had a significant African-American presence in this state, nor have we seen African-Americans run for higher office here. So it's still impossible to know."

The photo I se of Hillarty is one of a very exhausted woman. Her expression says...what ahppened? I was supposed to be a shoe in for this job...it was worked out when Kerry lost! I was the obvious candidate for 08! Hmmm...maybe if i didn't weave this web of lies and more lies. Maybe if I wore a gress and acted like a woman,,,it would have attracted more male voters. Maybe, just maybe, if I acted like a controlled preson and didn't rant and rave so much,,,then lie some more....maybe if my name wasn't Clinton I might have stood a chance. Maybe...but in the real world...maybe doesn't matter. If you hadn't antagonized me and countless others for all this time I might say I felt sorry for you. Unfortunately, that would be a fib. See you around HRC. Not in The White House....ever...but around.

Buyers Remorse? Maybe, but Obama will be the nominee. The only issue left is if Obama feels the NEED to put Hillary on the ticket. The way she has been treated she should tell him to shove it if offered. I would GUESS she will not be on the ticket. In November we will know if that was a bad idea or not. As for me I could give a s@#t.

Why should he? Puerto Rico doesn't vote in the GE, South Dakota only has a handful of electoral votes, and Barack has already wrapped up his race to be King of the Democrats. Now is the time to coast to victory, maybe even take another vacation.

The AP reports a close race and the Hillary Hate at HuffPo ratches up a few notches.

Good thing the AP didn't report on Paul Lukasiak's findings that since the February primaries and Obama's string of wins, Hillary received 500,000 more votes than Obama. She also gained support in every category except the lowest income groups, which is the main point of his article - that it's a myth that poor and uneducated voters make the difference for Hillary. Google the article as HuffPo will most likely delete this post if I post a link.

I know this isn't what Obama supporters who only care about Obama beating Hillary want to hear. But count to ten and think of November. Could it be true that Obama can't beat McCain? If so, instead of writing off Hillary as hysterical, like many here are quick to do, look at the data. Calm down and take a look at the polls. The MSM is pumping Obama. But what are people across this country really wanting? Last, before I forget, check out the analysis of the caucus states on MyDD. This matters come November. The caucus wins aren't the wins we think they are.

So sorry you don;t get it but we hate Hillary because she is hurting our chances in November by attacking Obama, using twisted logic and making ridiculous claims like he is winning the popular vote.
I only care about delegates because that's how a nominee is chosen. I, unlike you apparently, have been able to overcome that my canididate of choice is not the nominee and that Barack Obama is. And I will go after anyone, Republican or fellow Democrat who lies about and smears him.

And you think that nominating a candidate that a quarter, or more, of party would rather die than vote for doesn't really hurt our chances in November???

Kanary, I have looked at the polls and Obama is ahead. But before you write Obama off , you take a few minutes to think Hillary has not taken the bashing that Obama has. I am surprise he is still in the race. As soon as HIllary, please gets the hell out of the race then Obama's numbers will go up.

I see you are drinking the Clinton Kool-aid. Is there any left? lol lol Even the Clintons are drinking their own Kool-aid. What is Hillary's next tactic? She will demand that the person with the most ovaries wins. That's what we are coming to.

rather than pandering her unmeritorious argument about her incalculable lead in popular votes, hillary should have been fighting mccain as if she were the official nominee and it were the general election -- as obama has. that way, even if she were not the nominee after the final decision has been made by the dnc rules and bylaws committee and the corresponding approval meeting, she would be in the perfect position to argue for obama's electability to her staunch supporters and those coveted undecided voters. she wouldn’t be on this continuous rhetoric rampage against obama's electability as she's been, though indirectly.

if the polling data that she sent uncommitted superdels is correct regarding her beating mccain in the general election, it could be argued that during primary season using the same polling methods, john kerry was beating prez bush by a wider margin. and, well, we all know how THAT turned out. we have roughly 6 months until the americans enter that voting booth and press that button to elect the next potus. 6 months ago, hell even a year ago, clinton was practically the presumptive democratic nominee. before all the candidates announced they'd be running polls showed that she'd win hands down against whomever was running. she was winning before the race began. but by super tuesday, everything changed. so if hillary wants to get technical data can be quite unreliable.

Right now "presumptive candidate" Obama is running strictly against the GOP just like "presumptive candidate" Clinton did before Iowa, for which she was heavily criticized by a media who wanted a more combative Dem primary. Hillary has also toned down her rally speeches and is sticking to selling solutions for specific GOP-caused problems. She doesn't even refer to Barack by name, only occasionally saying that her solutions are better than speeches and stressing the need to nominate her as the more electable Dem. Her problem with Obama supporters isn't based on anything more than her continuing to campaign rather than dropping out. Arguments about electibility are generally being made by surrogates to superdelegates. If Hillary ends up stumping for the Obama ticket in the Fall, I'm sure she will find some way to suppress her true feelings and set out to convince voters that Barack is "capable enough."

What I've come to see and it could just be me, when the Clinton Camp says that Hillary Clinton has a better chance against McCain coming November and she should be the choice. This is despite the numbers and the wins on Obama's side....is it just me more is she wanting to do what Bush did to get into Presidency the second time around? Disenfranchise all voters and have it go to a mock DNC "Supreme Court" to make the final decision?!

How fair is that? She's already set out to disenfranchise the Obama supporters in Florida and Michigan when his name was no on the ballots so she could be in some unfounded lead. How can she get supporters through these tactics?! To endorse the mass disenfranchisement she's aiming to do is as disturbing as her other tactics against Obama, if not more so since Obama fairly won and followed the bloody rules.

Close battle?

Only poll - Obama 46%, Clinton 34%.

It will not be that close. I expect the vote will be at least 60% Obama, 40% Clinton.

Clintons already threatned publicly the decision of the rules-committe if they only seat HALF the delegates or if they come up with any other FORMULA besides the popular vote to determine who gets how many delegates.

Since that is a gurantee that all the delegates are NOT going to be seated and Obama will do better than 0 delegates in Michigan, it also become a gurantee that Clintons would file a petition to CREDENTIALS COMMITTEE.

Which mean that the nomination race guaranteed to go to Convention floor.

These are Clintons. They divide people, play to each groups' fear, portray themselves as savior of each group. They are ONLY about themselves.

Their first plan is to hijack the nomination. The second is to damage Obama to the point and split the party to the point that it is ensure Obama is not elected.

Then they would return in 2012.

Hillary has said that about each and every primary for the last month. Too bad it's an empty promise. Even if Obama were to lose the last three primaries, there is no way Clinton can win.

I am going to be so glad when that woman is GONE. I don't want either of the Clintons campaigning for Obama. I just want them to disappear entirely.
