In this June 1, 2007 file photo, Rev. Michael Pfleger, left, of Saint Sabina Catholic Church is seen with Rev. Jesse Jackson during a news conference at Rainbow/Push Coalition headquarters in Chicago. Pfleger apologized Thursday, May 29, 2008, for the sermon given Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, during which he said Clinton cried in January because she felt "entitled" to the Democratic nomination and that a "black man is stealing my show." CHICAGO — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday that he was "deeply disappointed" by a supporter's sermon at his church that mocked Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Chicago activist, also apologized for last Sunday's sermon at Obama's church, in which he said Clinton's eyes welled with tears before the New Hampshire primary because she felt "entitled" to the Democratic nomination and because "there's a black man stealing my show."

In video circulating on the Internet, Pfleger said the former first lady expected to win the nomination before Obama's sudden popularity.

"She just always thought that, 'This is mine. I'm Bill's wife. I'm white.' ... And then, out of nowhere, came 'Hey, I'm Barack Obama." And she said, 'Oh damn, where did you come from? I'm white. I'm entitled. There's a black man stealing my show,'" Pfleger said at Trinity United Church of Christ.

He then went on to parody Clinton, sobbing and wiping his face with a handkerchief.

"She wasn't the only one crying," he said. "There was a whole lot of white people crying."

Obama won the Iowa caucuses, the first contest of the nominating season, in January. Days later, Clinton's eyes brimmed with tears and her voice broke as she talked with New Hampshire voters on the eve of the primary, which she won.

Obama said he was "deeply disappointed" by Pfleger's comments.

"As I have traveled this country, I've been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that that unites us," he said in a statement. "That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger's divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn't reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause."

Pfleger, the white pastor of predominantly black Saint Sabina Roman Catholic Church on the city's Southwest side, said he regretted his choice of words.

"These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama's life and message and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them," Pfleger said.

Clinton's campaign denounced Pfleger's comments.

"Divisive and hateful language like that is totally counterproductive in our efforts to bring our party together and have no place at the pulpit or in our politics," the campaign said in a statement. "We are disappointed that Senator Obama didn't specifically reject Father's Pfleger's despicable comments about Senator Clinton, and assume he will do so."

In March, Pfleger invited Obama's embattled former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to speak at Saint Sabina, embracing Wright in the church.

Obama recently broke with Wright, who had been his longtime pastor, after video of his sermons blaming U.S. policies for the Sept. 11 attacks and his calls of "God damn America" became fixtures on the Internet and cable news networks and created a political problem for the candidate.

Pfleger, known locally as a community activist and organizer, was arrested in June 2007 with the Rev. Jesse Jackson during a protest outside of a south suburban Chicago gun shop. The criminal trespass charges were later dropped.

He also has hosted Louis Farrakhan, the controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, at St. Sabina and has called him "a gift from God to a sick, sick world."

Was he paid off? Was he a setup? Why did he step down from Catholics for Obama?

It seems to me he is trying to hurt Obama. This Priest knows how to talk as he did with O'Reilly's producer, he gave very intelligent answers.

He was deliberately trying to hurt Obama, he just came off as being just stupid and funny; but he was indeed trying to hurt Obama.

Did Hillary's surrogate get to him, like they offered 1 million dollars to another group to back Hillary as posted on Huffingtonpost.

You can't be serious. He's been friends with the Obamas for over 20 years and also with the esteemed Rev. Wright. Obama supporters will have to do better than this. It's all going to come out of the woodwork. It always does. Brace yourselves for when the Repugs really start to wind up on this guy.

You should watch FoxNews, they used the words that they "hunted him down" at a congregation meeting for Pastor Wright. He wasn't a plant, he was a guest speaker at the church and he was mocking Clinton.

The priest is a Cathoilc who is not a member of the congregation but a friend of Pastor Wright and believes that Wrighth was demonized by the media and has his own political views.

He did not deliberately set out to hurt Obama, because he wasn't aware he was being taped. Apparently based on FoxNews it was a set up on his part. Further more, Obama has not been part of Wrights church nearing 2 years and further more although he knew Father Pfleger, the father was mainly friends with Wright and not his spiritual advisoer as others have laid claim.

It's fun to watch the Obama kids squirm.

We told you this was going to happen, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Get used to it.

At least McGovern and Mondale will feel better after November 4th, and neither one of them had the scumbags in their company that Obama has.

Telling, isn't it? And it is probably only the tip of the iceberg. Just saw a highly interesting piece on CNN detailing how the lauded Senator from Illinois advanced his early political career and blew up his competition. It may have been all "legal", but it sure wasn't squeaky clean. Not coming from a guy who espouses himself to be such a saintly type.

Was HILLARY crying upstairs in the WHITE HOUSE while her BILL was "doing" Monica in the OVAL OFFICE at the SAME TIME? ALL you have to do is READ her agendas SHE SUBMITTED for inspection during this current campaign. MAYBE folks like you were too busy WHINING about what you DIDN"T GET instead of having compassion for folks who really were unfairly treated.

Self-entitlement has really taught you who your Daddy is hasn't it?

To Huffinton Post,

Where is the link to the video of the priest making these statements. You post video's unflattering to Hillary and McCain all the time; so why not this one? Or did I miss seeing it on your Post?

I'm surprised HP even has this story posted at all.

They sure as hell kept it off the front page. If it were Clinton's church, it would have been on the top of the front page for two days with BIG FONTS screaming at you.

Uhm...did you not notice that there are over 1,600 comments on this particular story? It was posted prominently at the top of the page bright and early this morning. Also with deceptive titling that depicts Father Michael as Obama's "pastor". So my advice to you is to quit whining and get out of the bed earlier if you want to read Obama smear on the "front page".

It is hard for me to imagine anyone saying what he said, even in the privacy of one's home.

There is a lot of emotion wrapped up in today's politics. What this Father did was wrong. Apologising, on the other hand, was the right thing to do.

I hope they give you an honorable mention for the next Oscar awards.

You fan of Leno, Letterman, SNL, or The Daily Show?

They all have said very similar things that could have also shocked you so much.

Some one please tell this man the Civil Right Movement was in the 60's. For some reason he think that he is the savior of black people.

I am black and I don't think he is my savior.

You people are being too sensitive. A priest should be able to speak freely from the pulpit, so long as he isn't advocating a crime, without the media's attack.

But for him making this statements at Trinity, this wouldn't be an issue.

Relax. Hillary still can't win.

Why is it ALWAYS Barack Obama's RESPONSIBILITY to distance himself from EVERY loud mouth with a pulpit or soapbox. HILLARY didn't DISTANCE herself from Ed Rendell Gov. of Pennsylvania because he was a "close associate and admirer of Louis Farrakhan".
MSM pundits and sellouts are such selective and desperate hypocrites that they AREN"T WORTH LISTENING TO ANY LONGER.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXum_-8I1TA

Gov. Rendell was HILLARY's MAIN SURROGATE and CHEERLEADER DURING HER campaign in Pennsylvania. NO ONE CALLED FOR HER TO RENOUNCE and REJECT HIM.
And she didn't.

She went on the declare herself "the white candidate" and to plant the memory of political "assasination" onto EVERY CRACK POT folllower of hers throughout the nation.
SHE IS STILL MSM's darling MORTICIA with a shot glass.

I like priests to speak freely from the pulpit about religious issues. I get enough harangue about politics online and in the dailies. I don't need my pastor to "instruct" me on how I should vote or what my political values should be. Not to mention, I don't think holding another human being up to ridicule is very "priestly" or very "christian". Wonder if he's going to include that in his next confessional. And please don't bother to come back with he's entitled to his opinion. He can have his opinion everyday of the week except Sunday when I have to sit through it.

I do not think that this guy should use the pulpit to express his views, however, at least he apologized. Wright never did and to me, that was pretty arrogant not to do so.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 PM on 05/30/2008

He actually did more than apologize, he actually explained his comments and the context in which they were said. Check the Bill Moyers archives and holla back.

I don't think he had anything to complain about.

Let me help some people out. Racism isn't an issue of politics. It's an issue of justice. As long as racism is rampant in America - as exemplified by the fact that African Americans are still routinely given more expensive loans than whites or denied loans that whites would receive despite equal income and credit rating - African Americans will talk about it and criticize it in church. Yes, even from the pulpit.

Either tell your bank's loan officers to give everyone the loan the qualify for no matter the color of their skin, be actively anti-racist, or get over it and the arrogant notion that you're entitled to judge what black people do in church.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:59 PM on 05/30/2008

What was the most disturbing factor on that video was the congregation jumping up, yelling and clapping; just as they did when Rev. Wright was yelling Bill Clinton didn't help blacks, he did them as he did Monica Lewinsky, humping the pulpit with his fist while shouting "riding dirty, riding dirty, riding dirty" and the congregation was jumping for joy and shouting approval in the background, one even ran up to the pulpit and imitated the Rev. with his fist. I find it very disturbing that Sen. Obama sat in that congregation for 20 years. How much of that hate of 'whitey" rubbed off on Barack? It is a legitimate question. He must have had some reason to stay with that congregation for 20 years.

HILLARY never apologized for LYING ABOUT her "Bobby Kennedy " assasination reference for her supremist followers NOR has she APOLGIZED for VOTING TO AUTHORIZE this UNNECESSARY WAR in IRAQ.

"that was pretty arrogant not to do so"?

He apologized. Not to Hillary, but to OBAMA! "These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama's life and message and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them," Pfleger said.

How about the fact that these words are the absolute antithesis of Hillary Clinton's life and work?

Yet again race is brought into this campaign by an Obama supporter. Who's got the entitlement issues here? Seems to me Obama and his crowd are constantly trying to convince me they are entitled to my vote because he's balck and it's the only way I can prove I'm not a racist. . Pathetic.

You have to wonder if Father Phleger wasn't actually consciously trying to hurt Obama in the final round. Think about it, he used to be on a committee called Catholics for Obama until two months ago. That means he stepped down. Why did he step down? Was he asked to? Did he step down because Obama had distanced himself from Jeremiah Wright? I don't know but I find it curious that he goes into the middle of Obama's Church and does the one thing Obama and his campaign have asked all of his followers not to do: Attack Hillary personally, mock her, or vilify her. Is this pay back time from Rev. Wright and Rev. Phleger for Obama's distancing himself from their circus show? I'm not necessarily a conspiracy theorist but I'm just asking...

That occurred to me too. It's hard to imagine that anyone, and particularly someone who is respected for his accomplishments in his church and community, would put on an idiotic, outrageous performance like that without knowing that it would hurt BOTH Senators Obama and Clinton. I can't believe this man didn't have enough common sense to foresee what the results would be.....maybe the devil made him do it.....

How sad it is to have to apologize for everything done and said by everybody one's ever known, just because your pursuit threatens the status quo. Are we really delving into another discussion about this? Here's a novel concept: Why don't all those journalists out there who swear they didn't give this administration a free pass on the Iraq war do an investigative piece on why it now takes $50 to fill my Corolla, compared to the $35 it took a month ago? Just curious if that could be seen as a more important subject than a pastor from a church the senator hasn't even attended since March...

The government/corporation run media is determined to promote the meddling of state into church. This concept has never worked. Each time there is state sanctioned religions, then there is religious persecution. Look at how they constantly attack Louis Farrakhan. The Nation of Islam should be feared just like the FLDS, just like the Davidians just like anybody who speaks out against them. They paint them as divisive, incendiary, bombastic and the dreaded elitist.

We should not sit still while the media takes control of our churches. If Trinity United has to watch what they say and now Father Pfleger has to watch what he says in his own church, then this is censorship.

Pastors spreading hate and intolerance in God's house.

But calling Obama's church a House of God is questionable I guess.
Looks more like a political pulpit and a way to incite racist.

Obama wants to know how to get the white vote? Here's a clue---stop attending a church that hates white people.

Hey Riley85. As a white person I was not at all offended Rev. Michael's remarks. I found them hilarious. Perhaps because when he's speaking about whites, I know he's not talking about me. He's speaking about white racisim, in all its subtle guises. His comments were spot on.

Where have you been??? The pulpit has been political since Ronald Reagan was elected. I guess Jerry Falwell and his ilk NEVER said anything questionable in God's house. They never encouraged violence against medical professionals because they performed abortions, did they? I'm sure many of the parishioners stood up and cheered but how many went out and murdered a doctor? Has the Catholic Church not said that you cannot be a good Catholic if you vote for someone who is not pro-life? Did the Catholic Church think that 'saving face' by protecting pedophile priests at children's expense was 'pro-life'? Just because a person attends a church regularly does not mean they believe in everything that's being said. Ask any practicing Catholic who uses birth control because they are fornicating...

You know, this is such a non-issue, and yes it does seem to be quite a coinky-dinky that everytime a major primary is about to take place, the "special ones" come out of the attic and say something really, really stupid. However, how many of us know everything and every though process that our friends and acquaintances have? I don't. I bet I have some family, friends, and acquaintances who have some very private thoughts of which I am not aware. I myself even have private thoughts of which they are not aware. But they are just that . . . private thoughts. If one is unintelligent enough to actually verbalize private thoughts, and he or she is an adult, how does that make someone else accountable? Obama is not accountable for every jerky comment that someone from his camp makes.
