"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?"

The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken by one organizer of this weekend's planned demonstration outside the hotel where the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee is set to (maybe) decide the fate of Michigan and Florida's much-disputed delegates -- reflect the widespread sense of persecution that is currently felt among some prominent Democratic activists and fundraisers.

Largely female and supportive of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, these political actors look upon a contest they view as essentially tied and are dumbfounded by the vitriol being directed not only Clinton's way, but at their own efforts to "count every vote" in all the Democratic primaries.

In a series of interviews with The Huffington Post, key figures connected to the WomenCount PAC -- one of the groups sponsoring this weekend's action -- each described this Saturday's rally (or "protest," depending on whom you ask) as reflective of small-d democratic values, and not as an expression of support for any particular candidate. But with the idea of counting Michigan and Florida's compromised polls at full strength seen by Sen. Barack Obama's supporters as a Trojan horse position that would lead to a continued Clinton campaign through the convention, that's proved to be far from an easy sell.

"We are not exclusive from Obama supporters at all," WomenCount communications director Rosemary Camposano insisted. Noting that while most members of the group are Clinton partisans, and that if the newly formed group had been created at the beginning of the primary process "we probably would have endorsed Clinton," Composano said the focus for now is on "supporting progressive ideas for women."

That, and counting all the votes from the controversial Florida and Michigan primaries. Regardless, Camposano said that the group has invited several prominent Obama backers to co-headline this Saturday's speaking lineup, but admitted they have not had any significant RSVPs on that score.

Still, they say their efforts have been a success, if for no other reason than the outpouring of support they've received from women who feel as intensely about this race as they have about any other in the past.

"When we formed WomenCount PAC, we had been hearing for several weeks a low rumbling of outrage, that it was not understood that women wanted to be heard and recognized in this race as an important voting block," Camposano said. "Instead we're constantly being cast as whining women. The PAC formed exactly two weeks and two days ago during a meeting in an office in New York, and we raised $250,000 in four days. ... It's been a massive viral thing, and I have not slept in two weeks."

But what particularly rankles some of the group's key backers is the sneaking sense that they're getting dissed by the Obama campaign. Earlier this week, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe seemed to characterize the group's efforts as an attempt to "create chaos" around the DNC meeting. For many of these women, his remark seemed of a piece with the systematic denigration of female political participation that inspired them to organize in the first place. Activist Jill Iscol said she found Plouffe's remarks "somewhat insulting," and that the message the group has sent out to demonstrators is that Saturday's event should be "a peaceful, fun day, during which we send a message to the DNC that they need to count every vote."

Sharp criticism of Obama advisers was, tellingly, a common thread among all those connected to this Saturday's rally who spoke to the Huffington Post -- one of whom even went so far as to describe Obama strategist David Axelrod as "Karl Rove on steroids." On ABC's This Week last Sunday, Axelrod predicted that, if for no other reason than to block pro-life Sen. John McCain, Democratic women would vote for the junior senator from Illinois this fall regardless of his choice for VP or how the question of Clinton's campaign is ultimately resolved. Another prominent fundraiser who asked not to be named described that attitude as "not helpful" in terms of getting the Clinton women on Obama's side if he indeed winds up being the nominee.

Not one of this weekend's key organizers sought to criticize Obama directly, however. Several even offered him praise. And paradoxically, given the level of distaste for Axelrod's assumption of their ostensible fall support, all of the WomenCount organizers predicted a fast Democratic healing should Obama emerge victorious -- but not, perhaps, for the same reasons Obama advisers anticipate.

Put simply, according to one activist: "Hillary will force us to back whoever is the nominee."

"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?" The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken ...

When the decision to oust Michigan and Florida was made due to moving of the primary date, where was this organization? Seems like this should have been done at the time and in response to the decision, not as a reflexive response to where candidates stand now. hard to buy that this just being done because soooo many people voted that we can't disregard that fact.......JMHO. Obama will get the nod regardless of these excersizes so let's cut the vitreol and join up to beat McCain.

Where was Senator Clinton in 2000 when members of the Congressional Black Caucus asked for one senator to stand with them to stop the election from being stolen from Gore by Bush? She didn't give a damn about disenfranchised Florida voters then. She doesn't care now either. It's just a crass political ploy to continue her failed campaign.

Didn't Hillary say "THose votes don't count" in March, when she thought she was winning.
Now if they don't give her what she wants, she turning her argument into any freedom fighter cause she can hook on too. Paul v. Clinton, its not a lie, its a credible fraud that no one wants to know about.
It's time this is brought front and handled. But isn't it just like the Clinton's to always be involved in some sort of legal matter that never seems to matter anyway.

I read that 17% of H.C supporters voted based on race. Guess what -100% have been called racist. I read 40 % of her supporters were men .Guess what 100% of them have been called bitter old Bicxxes. I read that 1 out of 4 wouldn't vote for B.O and 1 out of 5 of his supporters wouldn't vote for her ( a poll early May - Harpers). Guess who's been accused of being the betrayers ? Thats right -
100 % of Hilary supporters.

I don't know how many times I've read that Obama doesn't need Hil, Bil or anyone associated with them , they are scum, racist, and any number of foul names and "we don't need them" I constantly read her supporters are just votng for her because she's a woman and not because they prefer her health care plan, stand against NCLB , green jobs program , policy orientation and experience with Repug tactics. In other words these women are somehow incapable of parsing policy stances if they don't aree with yours.

Do you really wonder why they lack confidence in having their concerns and participation considered.?What kind of persom would vote for a campaign that substitutes a threat ( it's the only way you can preserve Roe Wade) for a "welcome " come on in , we need you" as a means of persuasion?

You don't vote for compain, and you especialy don't vote for those that suport the compain. Stupid things have been said on both sides. You vote for a president. If you agree with Abama on the issues, and think he more closely represents your views, you vote for him, if not, vote for McCain.

The professional Democrats who backed Clinton will support Obama, as will white women under 45, latte drinkers, etc. His big problems will come with white women over 45 and low-info voters (who have bought this line that Obama is just evil). I don't know if Clinton has the ability to "force" this second group of voters to do anything. For those who have an investment in party and policy, voting for McCain makes no sense at all (you'd possibly advance an agenda you despise and break one of the cardinal rules--those who supported the also-ran have to back the winner). These other voters, though, don't have a deep investment in the policy debate (maybe they should, but that's not the real world). To the extent they follow politics at all, they're more in it for the show (and their favorite character just got bumped off, or written out, or whatever). Think Obama will fortunate if he gets 2/3rds of Clinton's supporters to back him. The Republicans are so weak this year he could still win with that.

Obama does not have problems with white women over 45!

Hillary has been spinning that but it's a lie.

These generalizations and assumptions ARE accurate.

Remember, he's always "1 up" on Hill. If it were not so, he wouldn't be winning. I "HOPE" you're not wasting your money trying to get to Washington to the protest.

I'm an over-45 white woman, my entire county (85% white, .04% black) of about 150,000 women (of which approximately 45% are 45 years old and older - and 20% are under 18), voted overwhelmingly for Obama.

Stop the lies, Hillary.

You will be alone in November - remember that. I've signed a petition this week promising not to vote for Barack. There are now nearly 100k voters who will not be in Barack's camp in the Fall.
This article must have been ghost-written by Michelle - it's so full of 'Hope'.... better that than having actual skills.

There is no way Obama loses the GE. Anti-GOP sentiment is too strong. Moreover, when he goes one on one against McCain in debate in the fall, the contrast will be more than just the lean, articulate and sensible black guy against the doddering, pasty old white guy -- all those people who have been nrainwashed into thinking that Obama is some scary, evil guy with a lot of smooth talk will instead see a brilliant intellect who is about the polar opposite of evil, the polar opposite of scary, who is quite understanding of the struggles they face, and who will forge a new path for addressing those struggles that involves more than cutting taxes for the rich, privatizing the government and throwing the threat of American military action around as if the Country really wants an endless series of wars to vindicate the Chicago School of Economics model of stuffing so-called free market capitalism down the throats of the rest of the world.

Hillary would have a lot more cred about "counting every vote" if she had raised her concerns back in the fall of 2007, instead of agreeing to not count the votes of FLA and MI because of their plans to break the rules! As Bill would say, "GIVE ME A BREAK!"

I just cringe at the effect all these antics have long-term on feminism. I'm very tired of all women in my age group (older) being lumped in with these women. These supporters are into personality politics, not issues, and DO NOT represent all older, white women. Frankly, they are ticking me off, big time.

WomenCount PAC is funded by Suzie Tompkins Buell of San Francisco, former CEO of Esprit:

wiki:
Esprit de Corp. was found by the National Labor Relations Board to have illegally interrogated and intimidated $2-an-hour Chinese workers, and then to have shut down a factory to keep them from unionizing.[9] The Department of Labor found that an Esprit contractor doctored payroll records and refused to pay overtime.[10]

And although Women Count's site brags about raising $200,000 in the first few days, there's no mention of how many donors contributed to that amount or what the average donation was.

Why do I feel like two or three people gave the bulk of that money?

Suzie Tompkins Buell is a major Clinton donor and a major bundler for Hillary Clinton. She is a multi-millionaire. She also signed the Forbes 400 Rendell memo on Michigan. She does not represent me, and she does not represent the rest of the 99% of American women who are not multi-millionaire white women.

These women can call this protest whatever they like but it will be interrupted only one way -- a mob of pissed off Hillary women supporters, democratic party traders, who are willing to destroy their party if there candidate doesn't win. At least that's how I'll see it. This is why Hillary staying in this race to long has been damaging.

When you are running for the top job you keep going until you can;t go on. You, the runner makes that decision, not your backers. If your backers give up then they were not your backers, And when they give interviews they should be aware that they can be compromised. Distortion and omissions are sometimes the interviewers secret weapon.

Yeah, we know. As in, the media keeps failing to mention that Hillary pledged to uphold the DNC rules in August, and thought Obama also pledged he accompanied it with an urgent plea to FL and MI to change their minds and follow the rules so they could be counted.

"Distortion and omissions..." hell yes.

Nobody believes them. Nobody in their right mind would believe they care about voting rights because if they did, they would have protested back in August when this situation could have still been avoided. Where were they then? Oh right, overconfident Hillary did not think she needed those voters.

from blogger comments on TalkLeft, Clinton Campaign Concedes...
"
I think they're trying to take this to the people (ie: Convention) and leave the lawsuits, etc, out of it. That way she doesn't seem like she's trying to litigate her way to the nomination (no matter how right she is, she's got a whole legion of people ready to pull out their 'sore loserwoman' signs if she continues. We all know that Gore was right to want to count, but the soundbyte media just destroyed any chance at a reasonable discussion on the matter)
This may be one of her smarter moves. We'll see if it pans out. "

Doesn't bode well for party unity.... One can only hope these bloggers don't represent the views of the majority of Sen. Clinton supporters. Kudos to WomenCountToo for taking the high road.

I guess overturning Roe v Wade and continuing the Iraq war for another 4 years is right down the middle of your fairway, huh? Some Hillary supporter you turned out to be. Although I think she has conducted herself despicably, i would still support her if she ended up with the nomination against McCain. Any true Clinton supporter who says he or she will vote for McCain in November was only a Clinton supporter because Rush thought it would be a good idea to keep the bloodbath going.

These women are sadly deluded if they think they are standing up for small d(emocracy). There is nothing democratic about changing the rules once they have been put into effect. If they don't like the rules, they need to work from within to make rules they think are better.

Composano said the focus for now is on "supporting progressive ideas for women."
--------------------------
I fail to see what demonstrating this weekend has to do with "supporting progressive ideas for women" and if that is their aim, they need to get a better spokesperson than Hillary Clinton. She exemplifies all that is wrong with women in many people's minds. I would rather have them adopt an honorable woman who plays by the rules and goes through life on her own name and accomplishments rather than riding on the coat tail of her husband.
