"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?"

The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken by one organizer of this weekend's planned demonstration outside the hotel where the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee is set to (maybe) decide the fate of Michigan and Florida's much-disputed delegates -- reflect the widespread sense of persecution that is currently felt among some prominent Democratic activists and fundraisers.

Largely female and supportive of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, these political actors look upon a contest they view as essentially tied and are dumbfounded by the vitriol being directed not only Clinton's way, but at their own efforts to "count every vote" in all the Democratic primaries.

In a series of interviews with The Huffington Post, key figures connected to the WomenCount PAC -- one of the groups sponsoring this weekend's action -- each described this Saturday's rally (or "protest," depending on whom you ask) as reflective of small-d democratic values, and not as an expression of support for any particular candidate. But with the idea of counting Michigan and Florida's compromised polls at full strength seen by Sen. Barack Obama's supporters as a Trojan horse position that would lead to a continued Clinton campaign through the convention, that's proved to be far from an easy sell.

"We are not exclusive from Obama supporters at all," WomenCount communications director Rosemary Camposano insisted. Noting that while most members of the group are Clinton partisans, and that if the newly formed group had been created at the beginning of the primary process "we probably would have endorsed Clinton," Composano said the focus for now is on "supporting progressive ideas for women."

That, and counting all the votes from the controversial Florida and Michigan primaries. Regardless, Camposano said that the group has invited several prominent Obama backers to co-headline this Saturday's speaking lineup, but admitted they have not had any significant RSVPs on that score.

Still, they say their efforts have been a success, if for no other reason than the outpouring of support they've received from women who feel as intensely about this race as they have about any other in the past.

"When we formed WomenCount PAC, we had been hearing for several weeks a low rumbling of outrage, that it was not understood that women wanted to be heard and recognized in this race as an important voting block," Camposano said. "Instead we're constantly being cast as whining women. The PAC formed exactly two weeks and two days ago during a meeting in an office in New York, and we raised $250,000 in four days. ... It's been a massive viral thing, and I have not slept in two weeks."

But what particularly rankles some of the group's key backers is the sneaking sense that they're getting dissed by the Obama campaign. Earlier this week, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe seemed to characterize the group's efforts as an attempt to "create chaos" around the DNC meeting. For many of these women, his remark seemed of a piece with the systematic denigration of female political participation that inspired them to organize in the first place. Activist Jill Iscol said she found Plouffe's remarks "somewhat insulting," and that the message the group has sent out to demonstrators is that Saturday's event should be "a peaceful, fun day, during which we send a message to the DNC that they need to count every vote."

Sharp criticism of Obama advisers was, tellingly, a common thread among all those connected to this Saturday's rally who spoke to the Huffington Post -- one of whom even went so far as to describe Obama strategist David Axelrod as "Karl Rove on steroids." On ABC's This Week last Sunday, Axelrod predicted that, if for no other reason than to block pro-life Sen. John McCain, Democratic women would vote for the junior senator from Illinois this fall regardless of his choice for VP or how the question of Clinton's campaign is ultimately resolved. Another prominent fundraiser who asked not to be named described that attitude as "not helpful" in terms of getting the Clinton women on Obama's side if he indeed winds up being the nominee.

Not one of this weekend's key organizers sought to criticize Obama directly, however. Several even offered him praise. And paradoxically, given the level of distaste for Axelrod's assumption of their ostensible fall support, all of the WomenCount organizers predicted a fast Democratic healing should Obama emerge victorious -- but not, perhaps, for the same reasons Obama advisers anticipate.

Put simply, according to one activist: "Hillary will force us to back whoever is the nominee."

"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?" The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken ...

"Hillary will force us to back whoever is the nominee."

This is all the evidence I need to understand that Hillary supporters are simply following her lead, and are not doing this for the integrity of those votes.

This disturbed me so much that I went online and donated $100 to Obama's campaign, the largest sum I have yet given in seven separate donations.

It made me feel much better. I trust him to use the money wisely, and the more money he has, the less leverage Clinton has with these kinds of tactics.

If this story makes you feel angry or sad or worried, then I suggest you go online and donate something to Obama's cause: anything, even $10. Once the fundraising numbers are declared next week, I think even the most self-interested and mercenary members of the DNC will realize there's only one nominee with the popular will behind him. The one that the people are supporting, with votes and hard cash.

I am a woman and a Republican. I am an Obama supporter. Personally, Hillary, Bill and her notable supporters have tried to make this a race issue from the day that Obama won big in SC. Her minions have continued and Geraldine is still with her race and sexist comments. I know several loyal voters that Clinton lost, both black and white, all because of the negative comments that she has made.

Out of all 3 candidates, IMHO, Obama has been the ONLY candidate who has not lowered himself to Clinton's dirty deeds. Remember that lady who worked for Obama, who called Clinton a "monster." Although it is minute compared to what Clinton supporters have said, she left.

FL and MI should not be seated at all, not partials, nothing. One, they broke the rules, and two, what transpired, which were not real primaries elections, were flawed.

The funny thing is that with their demonstrations they are just sealing her fate....one more misstep in Ms. Clinton's campaign.

Their demonstrations will be embarrassing to the Party and will cause her to lose any political capital that she had.

The whole rally is based around the idea of changing the rules to favor Hillary.

But no, they insist it's about supporting women's issues.

I'm sorry, but a rally to pressure a closed door meeting where decisions are supposed to be decided on the rules, is in itself not following the rules.
The very premise is flawed.
If the biggest group assembled favored McCain, should those in the meeting be swayed by that too?
If there are twice as many Obama supporters, should that give him a leg up?
No and no.
The whole thing stinks of the Washington lobbyist culture that has wrought so many crappy policies.

Nancy Pelosi is a true party leader. She realizes that there is a member of our party who is constantly trying to modify the rules in her favor; a member who moves the goalposts, makes shamelessly distasteful references, and seeks to divide a nation that is in desperate need of unity. Nancy has put her foot down and drawn the line. WOW

Pelosi is the better example for young aspiring female politicians in America. After the Democrats win back the White House in November, she will get my vote for MVP. She's a real team player.

I think " a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc" might be a pretty accurate description. The Hillary campaign will continue to use whoever they can to raise havoc as long as they can.

It sounds like they're trying to come over as sensible and reasonable all of a sudden. That's weird considering they are going to this meeting to 'protest' the way they perceive Hillary is being treated.

Couldn't this have been done before and there wouldn't be this need for them to make asses of themselves tomorrow?

They're like a gang just following a delusional leader

Gee, that's not what one of HIllary's supporters said on National TV last night. Is this article another one of Soros's counter attacks? Hillary's supporter said that they were furious at the way Hillary has been treated and if the Party didn't seat all the delegates from Michigan and Florida, they were going to vote for McCain.

That's actually a relatively reasonable stance for a diehard Hillary supporter. I saw one on Fox News last night who simply claimed categorically that she'd never vote for Obama under any circumstances and would vote for McCain instead--even if after Michigan and Florida were allowed to seat 100% of their delegates Hillary still fell short of winning the nomination.

Many Clinton supporters who are threatening to stay home in November (or even vote for Senator McCain) feel that their reasons are legitimate and their actions justified. I don't see a point in arguing over their beliefs (judge not...) but I think we should be able to discuss how they choose to act on those beliefs.

Opinions are like...you know the rest - same goes for sense of humor. I am incredibly proud of my Mexican heritage and yet I can still laugh at a well told Mexican joke. You will never be able to stop me from laughing at a good joke even if it is racist - there are also those who could never laugh at a racist joke even if it is hilarious.

Just as I know there are times when racial humor (no matter how funny) is inappropriate, I would hope that these Clinton supporters will come to understand that not voting for the Democratic nominee in this election would be wrong.

After super Tuesday the Clinton campaign had lost a lot of the old Democratic base. Her campaign along with conservatives like Rush Limbaugh came up with an interesting strategy. They rented supporters for the remaining primaries from Senator McCain. They moved ever so subtly to the right, (Obliterate Iran, Hard working white people, "Me and Senator McCain have experience..." Gas Tax Holiday). When considering a VP realize that Clinton's rented supporters return back to McCain. Thus all of that support will disappear and what we will have is a person who is toxic and vulnerable and basically a drag on the ticket. Fellow bloggers, what do you think?

If the Clinton supporters are not there to create chaos then what are you doing there? It is not Obama's fault this occured. You need to talk to the FL & MI big shots from those states that decided to move the primary.

It is fine to be there, but Obama supporters are not getting involved in this chaos. What good does it do anyone especially Clinton to see a whole bunch of people protesting votes for FL & MI. Those votes were decided by those STATES. By the way, Clinton agreed to all the rules a long time ago.

The protest is despicable on the face of it because THIS MEETING IS NOT ABOUT EITHER CANDIDATE. The meeting is about the Democratic party, its rules, and its discipline.

Any committee member who makes their decision based on their support for either candidate is corrupt and not doing their job.

So a mob of Hillary supporters is trying to tell the committee not to do what is right, but to do what will benefit their candidate.

I'd have to agree that Axelrod's comment about Clintonistas not really voting for McCain by process of elimination was not his most brilliant. "They'll come because we're the least-worst," type hubris is never attractive, no matter who it's aimed at. What's up with that Mr. Axelrod? Why SHOULD they vote for Barack? (There are a lot of reasons...)

That's not what Axelrod was saying. He was pointing out that even though many female supporters of Clinton are upset and threatening to vote Republican because their candidate lost the race, once they see how anti-women's right McCain is, they'll put personal politics aside and vote on the issues.

Yeah, but the truth is that we (and he) have presented them all ad nauseam just to be called a bunch of moon-eyed "Kool-Aid drinkers" (like that's supposed to mean something).

After some stage it becomes obvious: if someone has decided to hate your candidate for emotional reasons (generally articulated by referencing perceived "sleights") they will not be dissuaded by reason (generally articulated by referencing written policy or direct statements from the candidate).

At this stage, Axelrod is probably feeling like the rest of us: there isn't even any reason to try for reconciliation until Clinton stops mobilizing her surrogates in an effort to gain the nomination. How can you invite someone in as a friend when they have directly said their aim is to stab you in the back?

Clinton is like al-Sadar. Until she disarms her militia and joins the elected government, it is difficult to say much about what to expect from them but that they are more likely to vote for a Shia ticket of reformers than a Sunni ticket of al-qaeda aligned militants (heh heh ... McCain probably wouldn't even understand this analogy :-).

These women have gone beyond rational thought at this point this is all emotional now. Doesn't matter how Axelrod would have phrased it.
