"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?"

The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken by one organizer of this weekend's planned demonstration outside the hotel where the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee is set to (maybe) decide the fate of Michigan and Florida's much-disputed delegates -- reflect the widespread sense of persecution that is currently felt among some prominent Democratic activists and fundraisers.

Largely female and supportive of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, these political actors look upon a contest they view as essentially tied and are dumbfounded by the vitriol being directed not only Clinton's way, but at their own efforts to "count every vote" in all the Democratic primaries.

In a series of interviews with The Huffington Post, key figures connected to the WomenCount PAC -- one of the groups sponsoring this weekend's action -- each described this Saturday's rally (or "protest," depending on whom you ask) as reflective of small-d democratic values, and not as an expression of support for any particular candidate. But with the idea of counting Michigan and Florida's compromised polls at full strength seen by Sen. Barack Obama's supporters as a Trojan horse position that would lead to a continued Clinton campaign through the convention, that's proved to be far from an easy sell.

"We are not exclusive from Obama supporters at all," WomenCount communications director Rosemary Camposano insisted. Noting that while most members of the group are Clinton partisans, and that if the newly formed group had been created at the beginning of the primary process "we probably would have endorsed Clinton," Composano said the focus for now is on "supporting progressive ideas for women."

That, and counting all the votes from the controversial Florida and Michigan primaries. Regardless, Camposano said that the group has invited several prominent Obama backers to co-headline this Saturday's speaking lineup, but admitted they have not had any significant RSVPs on that score.

Still, they say their efforts have been a success, if for no other reason than the outpouring of support they've received from women who feel as intensely about this race as they have about any other in the past.

"When we formed WomenCount PAC, we had been hearing for several weeks a low rumbling of outrage, that it was not understood that women wanted to be heard and recognized in this race as an important voting block," Camposano said. "Instead we're constantly being cast as whining women. The PAC formed exactly two weeks and two days ago during a meeting in an office in New York, and we raised $250,000 in four days. ... It's been a massive viral thing, and I have not slept in two weeks."

But what particularly rankles some of the group's key backers is the sneaking sense that they're getting dissed by the Obama campaign. Earlier this week, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe seemed to characterize the group's efforts as an attempt to "create chaos" around the DNC meeting. For many of these women, his remark seemed of a piece with the systematic denigration of female political participation that inspired them to organize in the first place. Activist Jill Iscol said she found Plouffe's remarks "somewhat insulting," and that the message the group has sent out to demonstrators is that Saturday's event should be "a peaceful, fun day, during which we send a message to the DNC that they need to count every vote."

Sharp criticism of Obama advisers was, tellingly, a common thread among all those connected to this Saturday's rally who spoke to the Huffington Post -- one of whom even went so far as to describe Obama strategist David Axelrod as "Karl Rove on steroids." On ABC's This Week last Sunday, Axelrod predicted that, if for no other reason than to block pro-life Sen. John McCain, Democratic women would vote for the junior senator from Illinois this fall regardless of his choice for VP or how the question of Clinton's campaign is ultimately resolved. Another prominent fundraiser who asked not to be named described that attitude as "not helpful" in terms of getting the Clinton women on Obama's side if he indeed winds up being the nominee.

Not one of this weekend's key organizers sought to criticize Obama directly, however. Several even offered him praise. And paradoxically, given the level of distaste for Axelrod's assumption of their ostensible fall support, all of the WomenCount organizers predicted a fast Democratic healing should Obama emerge victorious -- but not, perhaps, for the same reasons Obama advisers anticipate.

Put simply, according to one activist: "Hillary will force us to back whoever is the nominee."

"You're not going to write that we're a bunch of hysterical women trying to create havoc, are you?" The tone is part weary, part sarcastic, and a little bit plaintive. The words themselves -- spoken ...

IF he's the nominee? HE IS THE NOMINEE. and will MRS Clinton back him the way she backed Senator Kerry? She is not to be trusted as she is too obsessed by her need to be the first woman president. She has lived her life and made many of her life decisions with that goal in mind. And appears not to be able to relinquish her dream, no matter how impossible that dream has become.

The question that should be asked over and over again of these and other supporters of the Clinton Party is... When? When will it be over?

Will it be over when Obama wins enough delegates to secure the nomination? What exactly does "count every vote" in all the Democratic primaries" mean? Does it mean something different to everyone... or is there one definition?

In my mind, the claim that "Hillary will force us to back whoever is the nominee", means only after the rules committee demonstrations, after all the vitriolic primaries, after the convention chaos, after all the state court challenges, after the appeals to the Supreme Court... after 4+ years of denial and delusion... and even then, support looks like just one more Clinton lie.

In other words, the Clinton Party will NEVER support Obama. How about requiring some truth in advertising? Would someone PLEASE ask for definitions and stop allowing these divisive and destructive people slide on a real answer to this issue?

If it really is "all out war" with the Fauxcrats in the Clinton Party, then let's really have at it and get it over. There is no advantage for the Democratic Party to put the inevitable off.

Some of these women read to much into things in order to take offense at every turn. As a woman who is very competetive/outgoing and raised with 6 boys (cousins and brothers), this is very irritating. It reminds me why I don't have female friends.

I have to believe that if the democrats really want to take back this country, make the necissary changes that will bring back the greatness, the decency that once was, they'll do what's right! Hillary's supporters, dissapointed in her loss, will rally around Obama, because, she lost. I was asked by some gentlemen the other night, did I think the woman's vote was lost, if Hillary didn't get the nomination? I've met only a few passionate female Hillary supporters. If I were to do a poll, she doesn't have the support that everyone says she has.

WomenCount.com???????

How ironic.

It would seem that at least ONE woman cannot even satisfy that fundamental requirement for political office.

Hmmmmmm, FL/MI count this time, I look forward to CA voting in October of 2011, just so we can go "first". Perhaps we should move our primary date up for the 2012 nominee during the 2010 congressional elections. That would teach MI and FL a lesson.

if this ends up electing Mc Cain... then it is going to be a hard lesson that seems like it needs to be learned... the hard way.

then we will know what its like to have an older... old political machine woman candidate running next time.

According to the Sacramento Bee's Capitol Alert, a new Field poll that polled on the Obama or Clinton versus McCain question and "Obama vs. Clinton in California -- and it looks, once again, like the California electorate has flip-flopped. Obama now leads Clinton 51 percent to 38 percent, a reverse of the results of the state's Feb. 5 primary." So, can we seat the HRC delegates from Michigan and Florida and then have a re-vote here in California, less we disenfranchise voters here that may want to change their vote?

And what would you say to Obama if he were the one ahead in a self percieved popular vote but behind in delegates? Would you be demanding he exit the race...of course you would. The double standard is exhausting. I have nothing but respect for women...as I am one....but seriously, Clinton has played her base like a fiddle and in the end will be setting women back not forward. The next female presidential candidate is going to have a tough time casting off the shadow of clinton. She should be embarrassed by her piss poor campaign of micro polling, un-qualified DC insiders, mounting debt, unpaid bills, arrogance, and a strategic plan that wouldn't get her elected as a high-school president.

Beware of Single Issue advocates - whether this involves Evangelicals, Women, Labor, National Defense or whatever.

It's one thing to work on behalf of a single cause, but we live in a complex world, and when the blinders are put on, a lot of bad decisions get made by well-meaning people who are often manipulated into throwing more important issues under the bus in order to advance their own single agenda.

I admire women who fight for equal rights and justice for their gender, but they sometimes seem so single-minded in their zeal that they're willing to throw everything else to the winds. Not a good thing.

They certainly did not mention equal rights across cultural lines as well as across the genders. Fighting only for women's rights does not guarantee (or at least history tells us that it does NOT) those same rights for women of color. However, when the civil rights laws were passed because of the heroics of African Americans and their progressive brothers and sisters of other races EVERYONE benefited!

My solution, which I have stated before is to get Chuck Hagel for VP and tell everybody that he has changed his stance on Abortion. That is should be a states rights issue.

Throw all the womens rights movement under the bus....

When I was in college the communications department had a student photography show. One of the photographers, a rather bohemian female, took very tasteful nude photos of herself posed in front of large-paned windows. The outside light shown through the windows and the panes created cascading shapes and lines across her body. Nothing explicit, just the suggestion of things through curves and shadows. They were quite beautiful and very well done for so early in a career. The images were mostly well-received.

One professor, however, looked at these photos and was outraged and demanded they be pulled down. The images, he said, promoted bondage and slavery and were obscene and had no place in a university setting. The photographer was stunned by this reaction. Certainly she knew her own motivations for taking the photographs.

My point here is that all of these negative interpretations were not fostered by the content of the photographs. These negative interpretations originated inside this man's own head and were unfairly projected onto the photographs. I see charges of rampant sexism in this campaign in much the same way. There are a lot of women who are so predisposed to see sexism lurking behind every aspect of society that they are projecting here, as the cause of Hillary's difficulties, when it really has not been even a minor factor in conduct or result of this race. I hope they manage to get behind this poisonous and self-limiting mindset before it is too late.

Agreed. Psychological projection is almost always a delusional world in which the viewer is held captive and defiant.

Some of the talkinghead pundits were not so minor in their sexism. I don't really think that pundit sexism would have affected voters' points of view. But they were occasionally appalling.

However, I agree with your main point--and beautifully illustrated.

Yes, very well said.

What is more, Clinton is unabashedly exploiting her sex in order to get special treatment - we realize that any MAN who behaved as she has would have been ushered out months ago and his career would certainly have ended with the assassination comment, right?

But whenever anyone criticizes her, she AND her loud mouth surrogates AND her crazed militants ALL scream ":sexism" at once, regardless of whether it is there, and are effectively holding the entire party hostage with it. And no one will push her publically b/c of it.

So, this army of women are not celebrating equality TO men, they are revelling in power OVER men in order to further selfish agendas and get their own way. They are the furthest things from real feminists - they embody the very stereotypes women have fought to overcome for the past 30 years.

It's sad how the Hillary campaign uses supporters to threaten the DNC by claiming they won't vote and will protest every issue til they're blue in the face.. This is how they try to weaken the party. This another reason why Hillary would have made a poor leader.

What DIFFERENCE do you make by NOT VOTING? Absolutely NONE! However-there IS a more recent exception to this and that is-sorry to say-the appalling manipulation of the Michgan and Florida 'primaries'. PLEASE NOTE: BOTH states would have had primaries ANYWAY-about THIS time of year. Nooo-The Dem party in each of these states wanted to be NOTICED! Well-they got their WISH. They HAVE been noticed! Tell me PLEASE: How can you be 'fairly elected PROM QUEEN' IF YOU ARE THE ONLY NAME ON THE DANG BALLOT!!??? For that matter, how can you claim to be "The MOST popular" when your name was the only name on the ballot? The DNC is NOT participating in Voter suppression nor are they participating in "Voodoo math". What they are TELLING these states and the party apparatus in those states is 'PLAY BY THE RULES' and "IF you CHOOSE to BREAK the RULES, DO NOT CRY about how unfair the RULES ARE!"
