In An Iraq-Related Hole, McCain Keeps On Digging

Mcca

In politics, as in life, when one is in a hole, he or she should stop digging. This advice was not heeded by John McCain's campaign today. Both the Senator and his aides sought to brush away his factually inaccurate statement that American troops in Iraq were down to pre-surge levels. In the process, they made the hole even bigger.

Reminded that troops in Iraq currently number 155,000, well above the pre-surge level of 130,000, McCain refused to acknowledge on Friday that he had misspoke.

"I said we had drawn down," the Senator declared during a press conference (watch video). "I said we have drawn down and we have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down the marines. The rest will be home the end of July. That's just facts, the facts as I stated them."

But that isn't what he stated. On Thursday, in fact, he made a very specific measurement as to the extent of troop reductions.

"I can tell you that it [the mission in Iraq] is succeeding," said McCain. "I can look you in the eye and tell you it's succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels."

And that was just the beginning. McCain's gaffe had already been exacerbated during a conference call earlier in the day, when aides to the Arizona Republican insisted that he had not misspoke, even while McCain surrogate Sen. Jon Kyl acknowledged on the same call that he had: "What he said was not entirely accurate. OK. So what?"

The campaign aides also ridiculed reporters for even caring about the topic. "It is the essence of semantics," foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann said. "We are having this call about a verb tense and if you choose to write a story about Sen. McCain's use of a verb tense you need to hold Senator Obama to that exact same standard."

All of which, of course, simply piqued the interest of reporters. Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post pointed out that, contrary to the McCain campaign's tone, word choice does, in fact, matter. "If Bush had said 'the mission will be accomplished' as opposed to 'mission accomplished' -- those are two completely different things with completely different meanings."

An increasingly irritated Scheunemann responded: "If you're going to start fact-checking verb tenses, we're going to make sure we start monitoring verb tenses a lot more closely than we have in this campaign."

Later in the call, a reporter questioned whether McCain's verbal error was a sign that the Senator's age was affecting his memory and understanding.

"In every campaign, when you want to change the subject you try to pick a little thing that you can pick on and try to change the subject," replied Senator Jon Kyl, a McCain supporter. "I don't think this has anything to do with age."

The problem, however, was that this was not McCain's only gaffe. During the same Thursday conference when he misstated troop levels, he also argued that conditions were "quiet" in Mosul. That same day, three suicide bombers killed 30 in the city.

The Obama campaign quickly jumped on both the comments, organizing a call with reporters in which surrogates questioned McCain's judgment.

"It is very disturbing to have John McCain continue to raise questions about what he knows and what he bases his judgments on," Sen. John Kerry said. "If you don't know the number of troops, it is difficult to make a judgment as to whether they are overextended. ... It raises serious questions about his comprehension of this challenge."

All of which, apparently, was a step too far for the McCain folks. Hoping to shift attention away from his boss, Scheunemann cried 'journalistic double standard.'

"If we are going to talk about verb tenses in this level of detail, rather than the fact that Senator Obama doesn't care about what is going on in Iraq to even meet General Petraeus or to take time to visit the country in the last 873 days, let's talk about some of the other things that Senator Obama has misstated, like campaigning in 57 states, like the need for Arabic translators in Afghanistan, or for opium poppy agronomists in Iraq, or a non-existent uncle that helped the Red Army liberate Auschwitz."

A reporter later reminded him that McCain had structured his campaign on his judgment on Iraq. Obama had not, in the same regard, built his candidacy around his great uncle or the map of the United States.

"Obama," wrote Ben Smith, "perhaps, meant that the U.S. will, at some future date, add seven states."

It seems that all Obama supporters can do is to call McCain names, attack his age (You will be his age someday and you will understand how foolish your comments are), claim he belongs in fantasy land (Hollywood), etc. Why don't we run the nation that way? If you get Obama you will.

How about the following as a screen-writer's scenario: A child is born to impoverished parents, goes to an Ivy-league University, becomes editor of the law review, leaves with his law degree to do social work, and legal aid attorney, never practices law., gets elected to the State senate and luckily gets a seat in the US Senate running against an import politico who is a little less than popular. He then jumps into the Presidential race and gets nominated. He has no experience in business or real life, unless social work on the streets of Chicago is real life.

Is he qualified to be president? Mind you, this is not name calling. Looks at the facts. Who is the best-qualified person? Or should you trust in a novice?

We did with the Kennedy's and they took us to the Bay of Pigs. They were excellent and with guts. Who else would claim that Eisenhower who had led the greatest invasion in history designed the Bay of Pigs fiasco. And they had chutzpah to claim that Eisenhower ( who had never heard of it) planned it.
And they got away with it!

Why McSame had hit on the perfect campaign strategy to win over the hearts and minds of the American people in a time of dire economic crisis: War, war, war and more war. Next, he's going hunting with Dick Cheney................Such judgment..........

God! what a riot! Just make stuff up, why don't cha? McCain is in the wrong city -- "Hey, McCain -- Fiction is Hollywood's specialty, you moron -- come on out to the west coast for your fame and fortune and and leave washington for the politicians who really care about the people!"

LOL!!! Well there are 57 counties in some state somewhere in the US. The uncle does exist and was in the military and freed camp survivors at a camp not named Auschwitz. The Arabic translator accusation is just bizarre GIVEN that there are many Muslims in that area who speak ARABIC and ummmm . . . isn't bin Laden is holed up in AFGANISTAN. Poppy farmers? Well we're the biggest consumers of illegal drugs so maybe we really invaded Iraq for poPpy instead of oil.

But my favorite accusation is the one about Obama not going to Iraq in the last 873 days. Okay John McCain is old and not working with a full deck so I'm going to cut him some slack. But what saavy political strategist would be stupid enough to goad Obama into going to Iraq? Does the fool not realize that everyone, including suicide bombers would lay down their weapons to get a glimpse of Obama? Ooooowee!!! Talk about stupid. I cannot wait until Obama goes to Iraq. I will be glued to my set TV set during the whole visit.

Digging what??? The Iraq war is finally succeeding and you wouldn't know it if you only watch the MSM.... They don't want it to succeed, because it doesn't help the Dim's....

I also have some swamp land in Florida I want to sell you...............currently owned by the Easter Bunny. Everything is just swell. Economy is booming. War in Iraq is down to only a few deaths a day and only 30 billion a month. Life couldn't be better. Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran...........

NOT!

Today McCain tried to kiss up to the Jewish community in America by promising "alliance" with Israel against Iran. This retarded old man is FINISHED and any one who listen to him or give him even one penny deserves to be labeled as a FOOL!

McCain is finished. He has done nothing good for America other than wasting tax dollars. First the moron could not handle a multi-million-dollar jet and get shot down. He then kissed up to the Vietcong to save his own life. Coming back from a disgraced war, McCain cashed in his 'accomplishment' to get in politics to push his agenda: MORE WAR! This piece of trash is an agent of the military-industrial-complex and those whose evil nature has caused so much suffering in mankind.

McCain should have been put out of 'commission' by the Vietcong. That would have been good for McCain and for the American people. But now, the old fart is wasting air time and the air itself. Mankind needs fresh air to breathe. And McCain is simply a pollution.

I killed myself when I heard McCain's quote....No No No, I mean I'm going to kill myself if these idiots can't get their tenses straight. No, No, No, I mean I'm killing myself right now as I type this.

This articles is the worst of hypocrisy. On May 31 and on June 2nd the New York Times carried articles that (1) the Iraqi Army was in control in Mosul, Sadr City, and Basra - that the militias had in many respects turned in their arms and (2) the death toll of Amrican soldiers in May hit the lowest point since 2003, 19, down from some thirty or more over past months. McCain is right and the comment is wrong: things are much, much better in Iraq. Bloggers who claim otherwise are wishful thinkers: wanting a loss in Iraq for political purposes.

I think this is blasphemous.

There is one honest voice in American Politics in the last 8 years: John McCain. He is popular and holds his own against opertunistic politicians for that reason. The American people recognize it as well if they view is not clouded by partisanship. Yes, I am partisan as well. But the truth is the truth.
01:27 PM on 06/02/2008
Hmmm...blasphemous? As in, Mr. McCain is a religious icon or something? Puhleeze!!

No one in politics is entirely honest, hardly any of us "just plain folks" are either, for that matter.

What kind of man is Mr. McCain? He's the kind of man who freely cusses out his wife IN FRONT OF REPORTERS and calls her a cunt. That isn't tolerated anywhere, for any reason, ever, period.

How many years ago was that? Was it in the course of a contested divorce or after the woman had run off?

True, I would not have used that term because I have never been married to that kind of a woman. On the other hand, I did not serve as long in the US service as John McCain and if I had, I probably would have used rougher language than I do today.

And what does this have to do with his qualifications for President? Some would say it enhances them. I would say it is neither here nor there. One thing is sure: he is not a Bush. Thank Goodness!
02:28 PM on 06/02/2008
You are right on target. As McCain has correctly noted, Obama has shown more of a willingness to talk to the enemy than to our own generals. Just what you would expect from someone who has only two years in the US Senate and no time in the military. If he wins he'll need a copy of the "Presidency for Dummies".

Oh, and before any Obamaniacs start with the Bush lite stuff, Mc Cain has never been a rubber stamp for anyone, much to their chagrin. The fact he will have to live with Iraq is something the next president will have to deal with even if it is Barack. And, cutting and running isn't exactly a strategy.

Please read some journalism. McCain is financed totally by Bush regime PACs.

Lets start the debates and watch McCain self-destruct on the stage. I feel sad that either he is lying or he has become senile and does not remember what he says. Stop digging John.

Bigger than Bush. Bigger ambitions. Bigger liar, bigger lies. McCain probably hasn't told his biggest one yet. See what floats, what sticks, what passes. Keep using stick-on words like facts, truth, honest, straight talk.

Keep lying--it makes the other guy crazy when he can't keep up. You have complete freedom of speech as long as you never let 'em see you sweat. You CAN doublethink! "It's not a lie if you believe it!"

Surely you don't expect an old man like McCain to remember trivial things like facts. When the need for facts arises, he makes up something that seems believable to him. He still thinks he could be a good President. Among all his lobyist freinds....surely there is somebody to fill every critical and important position.

Yes, it would seem intellegent organizms would stop digging though only if they knew where they were
and if they did not want to get to the bottom.

McCain knows he is with the American military ruling elite and he enjoys it extremely and has a totally different slant on where he is and it certainly is not the bottom. And if luxury is part of Americans' success definition, then he does not give a damn what anyone defines as a hole. For he know without a shadow of a doubt that he is at the top and we are all underlings.
