In politics, as in life, when one is in a hole, he or she should stop digging. This advice was not heeded by John McCain's campaign today. Both the Senator and his aides sought to brush away his factually inaccurate statement that American troops in Iraq were down to pre-surge levels. In the process, they made the hole even bigger.

Reminded that troops in Iraq currently number 155,000, well above the pre-surge level of 130,000, McCain refused to acknowledge on Friday that he had misspoke.

"I said we had drawn down," the Senator declared during a press conference (watch video). "I said we have drawn down and we have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down the marines. The rest will be home the end of July. That's just facts, the facts as I stated them."

But that isn't what he stated. On Thursday, in fact, he made a very specific measurement as to the extent of troop reductions.

"I can tell you that it [the mission in Iraq] is succeeding," said McCain. "I can look you in the eye and tell you it's succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels."

And that was just the beginning. McCain's gaffe had already been exacerbated during a conference call earlier in the day, when aides to the Arizona Republican insisted that he had not misspoke, even while McCain surrogate Sen. Jon Kyl acknowledged on the same call that he had: "What he said was not entirely accurate. OK. So what?"

The campaign aides also ridiculed reporters for even caring about the topic. "It is the essence of semantics," foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann said. "We are having this call about a verb tense and if you choose to write a story about Sen. McCain's use of a verb tense you need to hold Senator Obama to that exact same standard."

All of which, of course, simply piqued the interest of reporters. Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post pointed out that, contrary to the McCain campaign's tone, word choice does, in fact, matter. "If Bush had said 'the mission will be accomplished' as opposed to 'mission accomplished' -- those are two completely different things with completely different meanings."

An increasingly irritated Scheunemann responded: "If you're going to start fact-checking verb tenses, we're going to make sure we start monitoring verb tenses a lot more closely than we have in this campaign."

Later in the call, a reporter questioned whether McCain's verbal error was a sign that the Senator's age was affecting his memory and understanding.

"In every campaign, when you want to change the subject you try to pick a little thing that you can pick on and try to change the subject," replied Senator Jon Kyl, a McCain supporter. "I don't think this has anything to do with age."

The problem, however, was that this was not McCain's only gaffe. During the same Thursday conference when he misstated troop levels, he also argued that conditions were "quiet" in Mosul. That same day, three suicide bombers killed 30 in the city.

The Obama campaign quickly jumped on both the comments, organizing a call with reporters in which surrogates questioned McCain's judgment.

"It is very disturbing to have John McCain continue to raise questions about what he knows and what he bases his judgments on," Sen. John Kerry said. "If you don't know the number of troops, it is difficult to make a judgment as to whether they are overextended. ... It raises serious questions about his comprehension of this challenge."

All of which, apparently, was a step too far for the McCain folks. Hoping to shift attention away from his boss, Scheunemann cried 'journalistic double standard.'

"If we are going to talk about verb tenses in this level of detail, rather than the fact that Senator Obama doesn't care about what is going on in Iraq to even meet General Petraeus or to take time to visit the country in the last 873 days, let's talk about some of the other things that Senator Obama has misstated, like campaigning in 57 states, like the need for Arabic translators in Afghanistan, or for opium poppy agronomists in Iraq, or a non-existent uncle that helped the Red Army liberate Auschwitz."

A reporter later reminded him that McCain had structured his campaign on his judgment on Iraq. Obama had not, in the same regard, built his candidacy around his great uncle or the map of the United States.

"Obama," wrote Ben Smith, "perhaps, meant that the U.S. will, at some future date, add seven states."

has anyone else noticed that mccain is starting to look like a sim of himself? that glow from within is always a bad sign on sci fi shows- especially "supernatural".

McCain keeps digging, thinking that he will find the light at the bottom of the hole.

McCain is just not the same person he was in 2000. He has never really been much of a maverick. His voting record shows he voted with Bush 99% of the time. Anyone who ascribes to the notion McCain is a straight talker did not do their homework.

McCain's judgment needs to be questioned, too. I do not want someone in office who is unwilling to change course [before, muchless] after it is blatantly obvious the plans are making a bad situation worse. But McCain would rather stay the course. McCain promises success, but like Bush he has not defined success. Moreover neither seem to grasp the occupation is exacerbating anti-Americanism and exponentially increasing recruitment to join forces against America. J

John McCain says we will not leave until we "win". Win what? We lost long ago. To date over a million Iraqi civilians have been killed, 4 - 5 million more displaced, unknown numbers severely injured, tens of thousands imprisoned indefinitely including children. Hundreds of thousands orphaned children are turning to prostitution; families are selling their children to feed the other members. Electricity and other basic needs are still not being met. Ignoring this humanitarian crisis will haunt us for years.

McCain promised "My friends there will be more wars".

A McCain WH bodes ill for the world's future.

The only difference I can see between McCain, and Bob Dole, the other charisma, and idea free war horse the GOP ran in 1996, is that Dole dyed his hair, so he could look like a 72 year old man with Black hair.

There's another big difference. Remember, Dole did a very famous television commercial for erectile dysfunction medication. John McCain has a rich wife.

The most interesting part of this story was Sheunemann's pompous and arrogant response. The issue is not one of a verb tense. Moreover, using that kind of argument probably wont convince your average voter, especially a McCain supporter who probably doesn't even understand what it means. One can only hope they continue to have such a dismissive and cavalier attitude regarding simple statements about facts on the ground in Iraq.

I am so unimpressed with Sen. McCain. Maybe I'm biased by the well-known left wing media conspiracy, but I just don't see anything to admire. I don't see anything even Republicans can admire, but he's their guy and they're stuck with him over a long summer. Even if I bought the whole "war hero" business; that would be sort of cancelled out by moments like these. But I'm not sure it's his age; I think it's possible that he's actually insane.

....maybe the Rep's just wanted him as a fallguy. They figure he won't be around too much longer to complaine when they dump every bad thing they did on him.

Sounds a lot like bushism to me, refusing to face up to ones mistakes or reality... talk about a 3rd bush term.

I don't think this is an issue of age. McCain is just plain lying in hope of gaining the entirety of the uninformed vote.

I totally agree. The first law of Republican elections: Just tell people what they want to hear; no harm if it's a lie. Reagan and Bush made their careers off that maxim.

Well, I would guess that the first step to supporting the troops would be to actually know how many of them are deployed. But that's just me. You go, gramps.

The law of diminishing returns suggests that if Sen McCain continues to put his foot in his mouth, retracting and explaining "what he really was saying" simply reinforces the notion that he has many "senior moments." So, the best offense is always a good defense.

Let us remember that the republican's game plan included Bill and Hillary running to get back into the Whitehouse; this was the basic premise that they believed would hide all of their troubles. Meanwhile Bill and Hillary had assembled this status quo team of skunks to wage a typical dirty campaign on the republicans; basically from their standpoint using fire to fight fire.

McCain is a weak candidate and he will not be prepared to match wits with Obama on a debate stage; so no matter helps him as much as the Clintons ironically who now can't exit the stage for the good of the party. McCain is probably a competent guy, but his age and the pace of the stress that is being ramped up as we get in the general will create more of these moments.

We naturally lose that 'something' as we age, some folks maintain alot better than others; but it is clear that McCain's troubles are just the beginning of gaffes that the status quo MSM will eventually be harded pressed to ignore---as random events. It will be difficult for McCain to stress experience when he keeps reminding folks he can't remember the facts that underscore his experience.

The corporate media, of which Fox News is by far the most corrupt example, make Obama responsible for the words of other people, but do not hold McCain accountable even for his own.

Obama will be facing two opponents this fall: McCain and the status quo media. They want a close horserace for their ratings. And, this is why when the Dems have more than 35 million folks voting in the primaries and the republicans are less than 8 million, they are producing polls showing McCain running ahead or close to the Dems. How exactly does McCain pull off this trick when he has in some cases been beaten by margins of 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 by both Obama and Clinton in similar states? My conclusion is that the pollsters are not taking into account the huge net difference of voters that have sided with the Dems and are giving McCain an edge by discounting the overall percentage of voters who voted in the primaries.

Otherwise, we must assume that suddenly McCain has gotten a huge amount of support that was not with him in the primaries. Since, to assume that Obama can gain 17+ million voters and McCain less than 6 million, it's difficult to see how he is even close to being ahead. These polls seem at odds with crudulity when 25 million more votes have been casted for the Dems.

"The campaign aides also ridiculed reporters for even caring about the topic." And at the same time, Fox spent beaucoup time today ignoring the pro-Obama activities of the RBC and repeatedly showing tape of an Obama gaff where he misstated the name of the S. Dakota town he was in. So, it's OK if McCain makes a mistake that has an impact on foreign policy, but if Obama misspeaks about something totally irrelevant, it's headline news.
