In politics, as in life, when one is in a hole, he or she should stop digging. This advice was not heeded by John McCain's campaign today. Both the Senator and his aides sought to brush away his factually inaccurate statement that American troops in Iraq were down to pre-surge levels. In the process, they made the hole even bigger.

Reminded that troops in Iraq currently number 155,000, well above the pre-surge level of 130,000, McCain refused to acknowledge on Friday that he had misspoke.

"I said we had drawn down," the Senator declared during a press conference (watch video). "I said we have drawn down and we have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down three of the five brigades. We have drawn down the marines. The rest will be home the end of July. That's just facts, the facts as I stated them."

But that isn't what he stated. On Thursday, in fact, he made a very specific measurement as to the extent of troop reductions.

"I can tell you that it [the mission in Iraq] is succeeding," said McCain. "I can look you in the eye and tell you it's succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels."

And that was just the beginning. McCain's gaffe had already been exacerbated during a conference call earlier in the day, when aides to the Arizona Republican insisted that he had not misspoke, even while McCain surrogate Sen. Jon Kyl acknowledged on the same call that he had: "What he said was not entirely accurate. OK. So what?"

The campaign aides also ridiculed reporters for even caring about the topic. "It is the essence of semantics," foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann said. "We are having this call about a verb tense and if you choose to write a story about Sen. McCain's use of a verb tense you need to hold Senator Obama to that exact same standard."

All of which, of course, simply piqued the interest of reporters. Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post pointed out that, contrary to the McCain campaign's tone, word choice does, in fact, matter. "If Bush had said 'the mission will be accomplished' as opposed to 'mission accomplished' -- those are two completely different things with completely different meanings."

An increasingly irritated Scheunemann responded: "If you're going to start fact-checking verb tenses, we're going to make sure we start monitoring verb tenses a lot more closely than we have in this campaign."

Later in the call, a reporter questioned whether McCain's verbal error was a sign that the Senator's age was affecting his memory and understanding.

"In every campaign, when you want to change the subject you try to pick a little thing that you can pick on and try to change the subject," replied Senator Jon Kyl, a McCain supporter. "I don't think this has anything to do with age."

The problem, however, was that this was not McCain's only gaffe. During the same Thursday conference when he misstated troop levels, he also argued that conditions were "quiet" in Mosul. That same day, three suicide bombers killed 30 in the city.

The Obama campaign quickly jumped on both the comments, organizing a call with reporters in which surrogates questioned McCain's judgment.

"It is very disturbing to have John McCain continue to raise questions about what he knows and what he bases his judgments on," Sen. John Kerry said. "If you don't know the number of troops, it is difficult to make a judgment as to whether they are overextended. ... It raises serious questions about his comprehension of this challenge."

All of which, apparently, was a step too far for the McCain folks. Hoping to shift attention away from his boss, Scheunemann cried 'journalistic double standard.'

"If we are going to talk about verb tenses in this level of detail, rather than the fact that Senator Obama doesn't care about what is going on in Iraq to even meet General Petraeus or to take time to visit the country in the last 873 days, let's talk about some of the other things that Senator Obama has misstated, like campaigning in 57 states, like the need for Arabic translators in Afghanistan, or for opium poppy agronomists in Iraq, or a non-existent uncle that helped the Red Army liberate Auschwitz."

A reporter later reminded him that McCain had structured his campaign on his judgment on Iraq. Obama had not, in the same regard, built his candidacy around his great uncle or the map of the United States.

"Obama," wrote Ben Smith, "perhaps, meant that the U.S. will, at some future date, add seven states."

I can not wait. This man is always a split-second away from a blow up. You can read it on his face anytime he is challenged in the slightest way. The debates ahead will go down in history. His whole philosphy stems from an 'I'm the dude and what I say goes buddy,' type of attitude. So locked in the past.

I don't think that McCain's handlers will allow him to debate Barack Obama, who would simply destroy the senile old goat. They'll figure that it'll be worth the price of being called "chicken" by Obama to keep the debates from happening.

I agree, but I wouldn't absolutely count on Obama's debate skills. He seemed rather shy and awkward in his debates with Clinton. That probably would change though with McCain. I just can't help believing his the Republicans "from hunger" candidate. He has nothing to offer but nonsense whenever he deigns to speak to the press. Wasn't that McCain campaign operative annoying, the one who kept talking as though this was about verb tense? When you have no answer, just repeat yourself in an increasingly alarming tone.

McCain continues the tradition of Bush-Clinton politics. When you are wrong, when your distortions are exposed, when you are caught in lies.... you should deny, parse, spin and then attack your oppoint for doing what you have done.

I think characterizing incident as a "gaffe" is inacurate. McCain doesn't know his facts, regularly "mis-speaks, seems alarmingly befuddled. This fact will become increasingly unclear, particularly when the medai discovers it can no longer protect McCain from public scrutiny, or ignore his confusion.

There are very excellent postings here so I will state this quicky to allow room for others. I have watched McCain closely from his last visit over seas when we saw footage of, his "seeing eye dog," Senator Lieberman standing behind McCain to whisper corrections of mistakes into his ear. I have reached the conclusion that McCain loves to see Americans in combat. It really gets him going and he will spew anything out of his mouth in an effort to move our soldiers along on any battlefield that he can. For this reason during the remainder of this campaign in the words of Dr. Evil: I shallllll callllll himmmmmmm Senator McWarLord.

PART TWO...continued

And they do speak Arabic in Afghanistan, along with Pashtun, and Farsi. To reach the masses in any Muslim country, you must speak the language that the Madrassa teach the Koran in...Arabic, almost exclusively. And any Special Forces Soldier will tell you that there was, at one time, just as in Colombia, a US funded effort to send in Agronomists to replace the 'cash' crops of poppy and coca with something less destructive, such as coffee. So Obama was right on both points. Maybe he's just too deep into his job, and the Republicans don't care that much to worry about details? Sounds so to me.

Oh, and Americans always think of Auscwitz when they think of Nazi camps, for 2 reasons. 1, it was the first liberated with the media present; 2, the infamous "Arbeit macht frei" (look it up). So if you told the average American, who can't even find Poland on a map, where the camps were, they'll say Auschwitz...as opposed to Buchenwald or treblinka, etc.

Now, as for Obama not going to Iraq in 873 days...I don't recall him being a General or Secretary of State, I don't remember him starting this pointless war, and i don't think Baghdad is in his Senatorial district...so why must he go there more than once?

"I can tell you that it [the mission in Iraq] is succeeding," said McCain. "I can look you in the eye and tell you it's succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels."

This, my friends, is what is known as a bald-faced lie.
Anyone who prefaces something by saying "I can look you in the eye" they are saying this as a pre-emptive strike (a little military jargon nod for my friend John) so that you will believe them and NOT look them straight in the eye because they are lying their ass off.

PART ONE...

Well..here we go again. Let's rename this cartoon from "(Republican) Masters of the universe" to "(Republican) Masters of Slick Deflection". Mr. Magoo's not being coherent on the actual amount of troops in his pet warzone, after deriding Obama for not going there in 873 days (interesting that Scheunemann had that precise figure so readily available), is the epitome of shooting yourself in the foot. I would rather say "I opposed this war from the start, and am working feverishly behind the scenes in Washington to end it" than "I just did a photo op in the Green Zone...nahnah nah nah nah!".

Some of Obama's "gaffes" can be explained away, and probably contributable to a 16 month massive campaign. While there are not 57 States, there are about 57 Territories, so maybe he meant that? 50 States, plus Guam, Johnson Atoll, PR, USVI, parts of Micronesia, American Samoa, Diego Garcia (a US airbase)....I dunno...sounds plausible. That's 57.

Everyone makes mistakes. But to make so many mistakes in a topic he claims to be knowledgeable in and not admit the mistakes is a very big flaw for a president. We've has seven years of it and we can not afford 8 more.
He’s old and set in his ways and very stubborn, and one can tell that he doesn’t like when Senator Obama corrects his mistakes. Some people think that to admit a mistake is a sign of weakness. But I think it's a sign of strength and it's way to grow as a person.

Perhaps when McCain said he doesn't understand the economy he was lying. It appears he also doesn't understand Iraq, either. We must also understand that there are many folks who gain positions not because they possess the intellect, but because of other factors like personage, luck or timing. They then by a process of trial and error learn and adapt to the job over time figuring out how things worked and work in their particular area of expertise; yet, often it also occurs that they also mislearn things and develop bad habits and practices which are also a part of their overall experiences.

We will find out in the next few months, whether this is due to an onset of senility or if this is simply a part of the republican fantasy that has gotten us in the war, in the first place. It may simply be that McCain has developed and built up a false level of information that he bases his premises upon; like perhaps if Bush would be put on the spot to have to now explain himself and his policies. McCain may have his own set of facts like Bush, and it may come to ruin him.

If Im a REpublican insider I'd be extremely concerned. McCain cannot be allowed out without a handler. Before he answers any question he should check with his handler on what the correct answer should be. I would also be worried that a 72 year old candidate can't always get his facts straight. Which 72 year old can. This is not fatal in the average older person but it is in a Presidential candidate. Forget Repulican or Democrat. We need someone in the White House who can think reason and make the right decisions. Pray hard America. This is scary.

McCain doesn't care - he doesn't have to. He can make as many mistakes as humanly (and I use that term loosely) possible, and the Party Faithful will still vote for him because "he's one of us!"

However, more and more of the American public has become fed up with Politics (read: Corruption) As Usual, and - unless the Republicans once again rig the voting process - Obama will wipe the floor with him (figuratively speaking).

This is true. However, I must also note that the Democratic Party unFaithful have already demonstrated in Kentucky and West Virginia that they will also vote for McCain because "he's one of us!". We need to make sure that turnout of the Democratic Party Faithful and concerned Independent Americans leaves those bigoted scum with the sure knowledge that they are no longer wanted in this country.

Never underestimate those who simply feel comfortable with a 71 year old
facts challenged candidate simply because he is white and one of them. Whereas, we might see the troublesome nature of McCain age, others will be comforted by it. It will basically be a value question, and for many in some states they won't stop to examine the facts; as they have already determined that 'white' is better than 'black.'

For them, they would probably not see what they do as being bias or discriminatory; as their internal attitudes are justified by so many other complex matters that rationalizes it on so many other levels. Things like 'he's not ready' or he needs to wait for a few more years are the subtle substitute for the underlying hate and fear.

Our policies in Iraq are a total failure. McCain should tell us what our objectives are and what his plan is for achieving those objectives. We need an end game.
