Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has gone public in the past few days with his firm belief that the Democratic primary will be resolved in a matter of days, not weeks or even months. How can he be so sure? Because he's drawn a line in the sand for those currently undecided party insiders.

"There are only three places to go for superdelegates, the Senate the House and the DNC," Reid told the Writers Bloc at Town Hall Los Angeles on Wednesday. "I have talked to Governor [Howard] Dean. I talk to [Speaker Nancy] Pelosi. We are pretty much in tune. We are going to tell our folks there are only a couple days to make a decision for those who haven't made a decision."

The Nevada Democrat concluded, as he has in other interviews: "We are not going to choose a candidate at the convention. We are going to choose the candidate a week from today."

Reid's increased willingness to publicly express his desire for a quick conclusion to the primary underscores the growing desire within Democratic circles for the party to unite around a candidate. Prior to this past week, the Majority Leader had held his cards close to his vest, stressing that the electoral process would naturally resolve itself. And while he predicted an expedient conclusion, the Senator on Wednesday continued to put an optimistic spin on the hard-fought battle between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

"The primary has been good for our country," he said. "We started out with six great candidates on the Democratic side -- and seven counting Kucinich, because he added something to the campaign. And we wound up with two who have got the nod. They have had 30 debates, national televised debates. That is tremendous. We have registered record numbers of Democrats."

The hour-and-a-half conversation in Los Angeles, which was moderated by Hollywood producer Rob Reiner and centered on Reid's recently released book, "The Good Fight," touched on a number of hot-button political topics. Pressed on several occasions why the Democrats have not achieved more legislative accomplishments, the Majority Leader put the onus on GOP obstructionism: "We don't have moderate Republicans in the Senate anymore. The only one we have is Olympia Snowe. As I say in my book, Arlen Specter is with us whenever we don't need him."

But not all criticism was saved for the GOP. Reid acknowledged that the Democrats, too, have had some difficulty in keeping their house in order, in part because the party's tent had expanded over the years. In the Senate, he argued, it was tough to get all 51 Democrats on the same page on Iraq. And in the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi had some coordinating issues of her own.

"People think she has a large margin, she doesn't," he said. "You add in the so-called Blue Dogs [conservative Democrats], she has trouble passing anything, because they are a pain in the wrong part of your body."

In the end, however, much of the conversation was premised on a shared disappointment and disdain for the "highly-partisan" path that the Republican Party had pursued since the Gingrich revolution in 1994. Asked by a Republican in the crowd whether he would be willing to personally reach out to President Bush to bridge their partisan divide, Reid responded by calling the current Commander in Chief the worst "we have ever had in the history of this country."

Reid also lobbed some harsh rhetoric at former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, whom he called a "fraud," the "J. Edgar Hoover of the financial world," and, as he has in the past, "the biggest political hack in Washington."

He concluded: "The Republicans starting with Newt Gingrich and exacerbated with George Bush, they became drunk with power and we need to change that."

Citizens of Colorado:

Our governor has chosen to remain silent during this historic nomination fight. We voiced our opinion in our caucuses and i for one want our state to proudly help Obama clinch the nomination on Tuesday. This would require a flood of superdels to endorse on Monday. Please contact Governor Ritter through his webpage and phone number and encourage him to endorse Monday. Thanks.

Don't get mad at Reid, he's a typical Democrat spineless, and he love's B.O. He's just like the rest of you here, just vote for a good looking face. I asked a Democrat the other day, why are you voting for B.O, she said i like the way he look. Now that's the Democratic party, all saddle and no horse.

You based your opinion on the entire party on just one Dem? It seems the Dem includes a diverse group of people.

One thing you can be assured of, and that is Democrats are good at loosing, and loose they will. This party don't have a single back bone, they will go down again. I will save my self the ridicule, and not vote in 8. I know why the politicians are kissing B.O. ass, and i know why the young women are (a pretty bi racial face), what i cant figure out is, is all the guys gays that are running around yelling like sissies. Even the lesbians like this guy, and that charisma thing in just bullshit, B.O. got no charisma. If you want to hear someone with charisma try listening to Dr. Cornell West, now that guy got charisma, but most here wouldn't know what the hell he's talking about. Dr. King had Charisma, and B.O is no Dr. King. So long Democratic party...

Just a note to Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and other Democratic leaders: democracy is hard.

That's why Republicans don't even bother. They're a bunch of lazy, fat-ass liars and theives.

Reid has no room to talk. He's the worst Majority leader ever, his % rating is lower than Bushes.

I don't think so. Bill "The Cat-Mutilator" Frist was far worse. Trent "Strom Thurmond For President" Lott wasn't much better than that.

Does Mr. Greenspan also wear dresses like Mr. Hoover used to?

The Reps are a disaster and should be tossed out. The Dems are also nothing to be proud of. Look at the complete lack of leadership from Reid, Pelosi, Dean, etc. Throw all the bums out.

Pandering to the Clintons in their nonsensical, hateful campaign folly has been the biggest mistake thus far for the Democratic Party. It's going to go down as a colossal error on the part of Reid and Polosi not to have called the Clintons' bluff long before now.

Harry Reid should give thanks for the Blue Dog Democrats. They got elected in areas where a typical Liberal Democrat could not have won. Would he prefer a more Conservative Democrat in office or a Conservative?
Idiot.
The question is will these Blue Dogs vote they way they were elected to vote or will they cave in to the crazy left wing leadership in the House and Senate. If this happens I suspect Reid won't have to worry about the Blue Dog Dems for long. Conservative and Moderate voters will cross party lines to vote for a good candidate but they don't like being lied to.

You're right. Reid should take a lead from the GOP and the way they have driven almost all moderate members out of office. Imagine if they had a liberal member? Any rate the GOP cleansing of the clan to neocon purity will be finished shortly. Then we just rename them the permanent minority.

1 will, "Would he prefer a more Conservative Democrat in office or a Conservative? Idiot."

1will posts false choices, neither of his answers has to be chosen because he deliberately ask the wrong questions. Bush is unpopular, his war is unpopular, his policies are unpopular, about 3 to 1. Bluedogs in this sense are not conservative Dems. They vote for and support Bush, his veto threats, and his positions. If the district is anywhere near average a Dem candidate should be able to get a majority of the votes without supporting Bush.

SDs have had more than enough time to evaluate the candidates objectively.

Attack dog, Two Heads, has clearly shown it does not deserve the 22nd Amendment end around. A compulsive lying corporatist and swiftboat fan as co-president will do this nation no good. That sort is precisely what we have been working to change away from.

Worst Democratic Congress and Senate Ever!

Thanks for Iraq.

Yes, yes, I know the Democratic leadership will always claim ignorance. And they're always right.

EDUCATE YOURSELVES!! If some people who post would do their homework, they would discover how deep Obama's ties are with radical, communist individuals. Stops listening to the MSM and Google it. In as little as 15 minutes you will receive more information about Barack Obama than the MSM has presented in 6 months--and it will scare the hell out of you.

Educate yourself. You are being taken in by right wing propaganda. Communism is dead, this is not 1955. Red baiting doesn't work anymore. Conservatives still living the past and easily fooled by lies. Sad people.

If you have some specific criticisms of Obama why don't you make them? Vague appeals to Google somebody and find something bad about them aren't fair or informative.

I hope you took your anti-psychotic medications this morning. You can even read your own obituary on the internet if that is where you get your gospel truth. People like you are celebrating ignorance to the highest level. The problem with you is that you either do not know or do not accept facts even when you know it. All based on HATE!!!. Go purge your psyche.

Do the same thing for McCain, Cheney, Bush, the Clintons, Rove, Rumsfeld, Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and then come back with your findings. And thank you in advance for catching up with the rest of us.

Tell me, did you believe the one about his gay love affair, or is that sadly even too ridiculous for you to use a way to scare dumb white people?

i love Harry Reid. And he's right -- at this point I don't think there's any such thing as a genuinely undecided superdelegate; if you honestly don't know by now which candidate you support, you're too stupid to be one of the 800 people who can tip the fate of the party. I think they all know, but I need to understand what is going on with the 200 who haven't declared yet; they had the power to end this thing. It's past time for coyness; you have to ask what these people are holding out for. While I think the super who said he was holding out until one of the candidates agreed to dedicate an astronomical amount of money to register Latino voters is a nut job and is abusing his superdelegate powers by putting an eight figure price tag on his endorsement, at least he was honest about why he hasn't made a decision. What the hell is the deal with the rest of them?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:35 AM on 05/31/2008

I am asking the same question. Seeing Clinton did lots of damages to the party, dividing voters, inciting hatred,..., it's hard to understand that superdelegates are just watching!
