Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has gone public in the past few days with his firm belief that the Democratic primary will be resolved in a matter of days, not weeks or even months. How can he be so sure? Because he's drawn a line in the sand for those currently undecided party insiders.

"There are only three places to go for superdelegates, the Senate the House and the DNC," Reid told the Writers Bloc at Town Hall Los Angeles on Wednesday. "I have talked to Governor [Howard] Dean. I talk to [Speaker Nancy] Pelosi. We are pretty much in tune. We are going to tell our folks there are only a couple days to make a decision for those who haven't made a decision."

The Nevada Democrat concluded, as he has in other interviews: "We are not going to choose a candidate at the convention. We are going to choose the candidate a week from today."

Reid's increased willingness to publicly express his desire for a quick conclusion to the primary underscores the growing desire within Democratic circles for the party to unite around a candidate. Prior to this past week, the Majority Leader had held his cards close to his vest, stressing that the electoral process would naturally resolve itself. And while he predicted an expedient conclusion, the Senator on Wednesday continued to put an optimistic spin on the hard-fought battle between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

"The primary has been good for our country," he said. "We started out with six great candidates on the Democratic side -- and seven counting Kucinich, because he added something to the campaign. And we wound up with two who have got the nod. They have had 30 debates, national televised debates. That is tremendous. We have registered record numbers of Democrats."

The hour-and-a-half conversation in Los Angeles, which was moderated by Hollywood producer Rob Reiner and centered on Reid's recently released book, "The Good Fight," touched on a number of hot-button political topics. Pressed on several occasions why the Democrats have not achieved more legislative accomplishments, the Majority Leader put the onus on GOP obstructionism: "We don't have moderate Republicans in the Senate anymore. The only one we have is Olympia Snowe. As I say in my book, Arlen Specter is with us whenever we don't need him."

But not all criticism was saved for the GOP. Reid acknowledged that the Democrats, too, have had some difficulty in keeping their house in order, in part because the party's tent had expanded over the years. In the Senate, he argued, it was tough to get all 51 Democrats on the same page on Iraq. And in the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi had some coordinating issues of her own.

"People think she has a large margin, she doesn't," he said. "You add in the so-called Blue Dogs [conservative Democrats], she has trouble passing anything, because they are a pain in the wrong part of your body."

In the end, however, much of the conversation was premised on a shared disappointment and disdain for the "highly-partisan" path that the Republican Party had pursued since the Gingrich revolution in 1994. Asked by a Republican in the crowd whether he would be willing to personally reach out to President Bush to bridge their partisan divide, Reid responded by calling the current Commander in Chief the worst "we have ever had in the history of this country."

Reid also lobbed some harsh rhetoric at former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, whom he called a "fraud," the "J. Edgar Hoover of the financial world," and, as he has in the past, "the biggest political hack in Washington."

He concluded: "The Republicans starting with Newt Gingrich and exacerbated with George Bush, they became drunk with power and we need to change that."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has gone public in the past few days with his firm belief that the Democratic primary will be resolved in a matter of days, not weeks or even months. How can he be so...

Each day I live I become a little more disgusted with the Washington D.C. folks.. . . . . These super delegates, sitting on their hands through this mess, have proved to be totally SPINELESS WHIMPS.
Why are they all such COWARDS????? They are the people destroying the party, not that crazy, sad
dinosaur Hilliary and her hillbilly (more like hill "bully") husband.

I actually learned something from do-nothing Harry Reid: I'm a Blue Dog! Wow, and Reid says my type is a pain in the butt to the party.

That's what you get for forcing a self admitted marxist-socialist Obama down our throats.

Are there truly no bounds to ignorance? Where and when did Obama claim to be a marxist-socialist? It never happened. Perhaps you are somehow confusing him with Hillary who did work for a communist led law firm in California.

And, if you are a democrat (which I doubt), you show no signs of it.

Harry Reid is so senile he can't remember Carter or Clinton. Obamaniacs say that Billy was a terrible President. But let's get real. What qualifications does Reid have to make a judment? He's a leader in Congress and hasn't been able to accomplish anything other than a strong whine.

Your legend continues. Reid, of course, is leader of only one house in congress, the Senate. There is no real majority there. Lieberman is counted in the 51 "majority" for the dems, but he clearly is more of a repug than a dem.

The majority in the House is larger, but nothing can be done by the House alone. Several bills have passed the House, but were killed in the Senate.

The voters know the truth which is why when the Chimp in Chief goes out, your remaining mob of monkeys will howl themselves into the oblivion of history. A true majority in the Senate and the House is what is needed. And that is what is coming. Perhaps then you will return to your dark jungle.

If you are ignorant about how congress works you would think like you do.
'
The only way the Dems can get anything done is if they get a SUPER MAJORITY in both houses in Nov. THEN and only then will they finally have the power to make things change.

It won't be enough to vote for OBAMA and then allow these old fart Repugs to stay in power. ALL REPS must go. If you truly want to see a change. AND all Blue dog Dems as well.

If they won't support the party platform, don't allow them to run as Dems.

That is what is wrong with America. I agree that you can think that one candidate is better than another but Dennis K. was not going to win anything. So put your money where your mouth is and make a freaking difference instead of throwing your vote in the air!

I get that you want to vote for Dennis but if he can't win, and you know these facts going in, why the heck do you do it. That's part of how we got this idiot in the White house for eight long years.

Look at the larger picture when you vote.

If Col. Sanders was elected President in 2000 and an 8 Piece box cost $120 today, you know there'd be an investigation as well as a complete uproar. (Okay, I'm paraphrasing BIll Maher, but it's true.) I can't believe that any intellegent American would believe a thing that the Republicans are spewing today. McCain says that troop levels in Iraq are below presurge levels. When it's pointed out to him that we're still 15,000 troops above the presurge levels, he denied he said pre-surge. This idiot obviously doesn't believe in video and audio tape. The Republicans are very quick to scream foul when called on their bullshit, but also quick to distribute their own brand. If you disagree with tem, you are branded unpatriotic. Witness the Scott McLellan book. The WH has not disputed what he wrote. They are simply trying to discredit him. They say he is disloyal. To whom? The White House and Georgie Bush? Maybe he is disloyal to Bush, but he IS loyal to America. Which would you rather have?

That was kind of an unfortunate slam against Dennis Kucinich. I contributed to Dennis's campaign even though I knew he wouldn't get close to winning, because I felt it was important to have such a strong advocate for single-payer universal health care standing on the debate stage. Unfortunately for Dennis and his many brilliant, progressive ideas, he's about 50 years ahead of the rest of the country.

Obama asks Biden to join his team. What happened to his mantra that " you can't expect the same old people in Washington to deal with the same old problems and get a different result " referring to Hillary Clinton. So now we find out that all of that was , to be polite "rethoric" naw how about "BS." So he gets Biden who has been in the senate for decades , Brezinski from the Carter administration and Daschele (ditto) and also whose wife is one of the biggest lobbyists in the DC , i.e for the airline industry. among a whole bunch of similar worthies. " We need to get rid of the lobbyists in DC" , BO says to rapturous applause. Of course that is why Daschele is working for him. Sure I can see Daschele getting rid of his meal ticket so that we can get "real change" in DC. There's a fire on sale on "bridges" in the USA and there are a whole bunch buying them up

Remember, Beachrunner, that all progress in the Senate has been blocked by the Republicans. The Democrats have a very narrow majority. When the Reps had a very large majority, they changed the rules so that a simple majority would not be enough. Since Gingrich days, the Reps have stacked the rules in favor of big business. When big business controls things as they do today, it's called fascism. What's really sad is that is that most people don't realize that Bush has embraced signing statements usually saying that even though he is signing a bill into law, he has no intention of following the law. We are living in truly mad times.

Obviously the obvious escapes you. Congress' real problem is that it is for all tenses and purposes half rethug, and Bush gets the deciding vote. That explains the even lower approval rating....not that democrats haven't helped to lower it.

Reid's getting nervous. He knows it would be bad for this thing to carry into the convention. Right now the republicans are trying to unite, well as soon as God tells to via their televangelist.
This election should be a cakewalk for the dems, but we're trying our best to give it back to the republicans.

Is it that secretly we know that the next four years are going to suck the suck out of suck? That whoever gets the nod this November is a one and done?

But that would be giving these morons too much credit. This is all about power.

Unfortunately Clinton's made a huge mess, while Obama's clinging to the edge of the extreme. Truly a dumb and dumber moment if there's ever was one.

Hopefully this will be a wake up signal, however if the past six months are any indication... I ain't holding my breath.

chill Bob. if one were to sit and pick, pick, pick they'd find a million gripes as to why Scott shouldn't have written his book. All the gripes are meaningless in light of the fact that finally someone very close to the inner circle has shown light where much has been speculated but none has been fact.

sure, Bob, you're pissed, but you must remember you grew up in very different times. we who've been actively anxious over the destruction and direction of this country have been starved for any shread of truth.

What REID doesn't understand: The so-called Blue Dog Democrats come from districts which don't understand foreign policy but abhor even the semblance of a military defeat for the U.S........ since often their small towns supply much of the cannon fodder for Bush's war. REID also doesn't WANT to understand that this cohort of Democrats DOES NOT support a domestic policy which includes an AMNESTY for the ILLEGAL ALIENS whom it must countenance every day as a reality!!!

Please help me understand why people vote against their own self interest, and would rather suffer economic peril, they would rather vote for an individual who clearly favors big business, and loobyist, ship their jobs overseas, who are responsible for the failing housing situation, increase in food prices, and the reason why they can't afford college for their children.
Why would the people for example in West Virginia and Kentucky with their dire poverty, vote against their financial interest because the other candidate is African American.
It makes no sense.
