Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has gone public in the past few days with his firm belief that the Democratic primary will be resolved in a matter of days, not weeks or even months. How can he be so sure? Because he's drawn a line in the sand for those currently undecided party insiders.

"There are only three places to go for superdelegates, the Senate the House and the DNC," Reid told the Writers Bloc at Town Hall Los Angeles on Wednesday. "I have talked to Governor [Howard] Dean. I talk to [Speaker Nancy] Pelosi. We are pretty much in tune. We are going to tell our folks there are only a couple days to make a decision for those who haven't made a decision."

The Nevada Democrat concluded, as he has in other interviews: "We are not going to choose a candidate at the convention. We are going to choose the candidate a week from today."

Reid's increased willingness to publicly express his desire for a quick conclusion to the primary underscores the growing desire within Democratic circles for the party to unite around a candidate. Prior to this past week, the Majority Leader had held his cards close to his vest, stressing that the electoral process would naturally resolve itself. And while he predicted an expedient conclusion, the Senator on Wednesday continued to put an optimistic spin on the hard-fought battle between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

"The primary has been good for our country," he said. "We started out with six great candidates on the Democratic side -- and seven counting Kucinich, because he added something to the campaign. And we wound up with two who have got the nod. They have had 30 debates, national televised debates. That is tremendous. We have registered record numbers of Democrats."

The hour-and-a-half conversation in Los Angeles, which was moderated by Hollywood producer Rob Reiner and centered on Reid's recently released book, "The Good Fight," touched on a number of hot-button political topics. Pressed on several occasions why the Democrats have not achieved more legislative accomplishments, the Majority Leader put the onus on GOP obstructionism: "We don't have moderate Republicans in the Senate anymore. The only one we have is Olympia Snowe. As I say in my book, Arlen Specter is with us whenever we don't need him."

But not all criticism was saved for the GOP. Reid acknowledged that the Democrats, too, have had some difficulty in keeping their house in order, in part because the party's tent had expanded over the years. In the Senate, he argued, it was tough to get all 51 Democrats on the same page on Iraq. And in the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi had some coordinating issues of her own.

"People think she has a large margin, she doesn't," he said. "You add in the so-called Blue Dogs [conservative Democrats], she has trouble passing anything, because they are a pain in the wrong part of your body."

In the end, however, much of the conversation was premised on a shared disappointment and disdain for the "highly-partisan" path that the Republican Party had pursued since the Gingrich revolution in 1994. Asked by a Republican in the crowd whether he would be willing to personally reach out to President Bush to bridge their partisan divide, Reid responded by calling the current Commander in Chief the worst "we have ever had in the history of this country."

Reid also lobbed some harsh rhetoric at former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, whom he called a "fraud," the "J. Edgar Hoover of the financial world," and, as he has in the past, "the biggest political hack in Washington."

He concluded: "The Republicans starting with Newt Gingrich and exacerbated with George Bush, they became drunk with power and we need to change that."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has gone public in the past few days with his firm belief that the Democratic primary will be resolved in a matter of days, not weeks or even months. How can he be so...

Cut and paste is a wonderful thing,... ;-)

One might be forgiven for thinking they're actually a spambot....

I agree, What a joke both he and Pelosi are. Both of them ran of ending the war and bringing bush and cheney to justice, yet no actions. Now they are threatening there colleagues and Reid insults many people in the party, calling conservative dem's a pain in the ass. What the fluck are they thinking right now?

This country would run just fine with half of a house and half of a senate -much like Puerto Rico, has done successfully.

"We started out with six great candidates on the Democratic side -- and seven counting Kucinich, because he added something to the campaign. "

That really pisses me off. What the mealy mouth Reid calls "something" is what most would call standing on truth and moral principle. The rest of them just hoped (like Clinton in particular) the American people were too blind and dumb to notice.

Kucinich is the only one of those candidates who stood for impeachment of these criminals. He's one of the only ones who was right from the beginning on the wars (Obama's stance against it was not NEARLY as strong). He was the only one for immediately ending the war and atoning for the crime. He's the only one who is willing to fight tooth and nail against the corporatism dominating Washington. He railed against NAFTA before it was cool. He railed against torture before it became popular (I still don't hear much about it). He railed against the Patriot Act.

To disrespect him that way is low, especially when "Give 'em Help Harry" did nothing but walk around bitching and capitulating about and to the GOP. Reid gained his power by adopting positions and delivering empty promises that were Kucinich's positions from the outset. Dennis had been screaming from the top of every building long before Reid had his change of heart, or before he came to power on empty conviction.

Amen. I said exactly the same thing farther down, though with less detail.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:48 PM on 05/30/2008

Those are all of the reasons we cannot afford to replace Kucinich in his current role - you realize that, don't you?

The Left's bane right now is the number of conservative Democrats that side with the GOP on a good number of important issues (*COUGH*hrc*COUGH*) instead of standing up for the rights of individuals, and Democratic principles.

If a strong progressive voice like Kucinich is lost and replaced by another watered down rubber-stamper, the country suffers.

While Kucinich is admirable for a wide variety of reasons, he is, and always has been, totally unelectable as president.

He serves a far more important function in the House.

Re: Blue-dog Dems: I live in western NC, a republican leaning area. In '06 we threw Charles Taylor out and put Heath Shuler in the House. Shuler is a blue-dog, but was the only one who could defeat Taylor. This year he has no Dem competition, and 1 repub contender. How does one deal with that?
In all fairness, Shuler has towed the party line for the most part, but he is an active member of the blue-dog coalition.

I rather suspect that scenario holds sway in more than a few blue-dog districts, where one gets a rightie running on the dem ticket because he couldn't defeat the incumbent on the repub ticket.

"'The primary has been good for our country,' he said. 'We started out with six great candidates on the Democratic side -- and seven counting Kucinich, because he added something to the campaign.'"

Is it just me, or was that the most telling, insensitive remark I've read from one Democrat to another? Kucinich was NOT a "great" candidate?

Kucinich was the only candidate with the GUTS to hold the all the RIGHT positions. Gravel was the only candidate who stood UNAMBIGUOUSLY against the war. The remainder of the candidates were compromised by right-wing pandering, to varying degrees -- but the three who made it into the finals were the MOST compromised.

You're an a*hole, Senator Reid. And you should be thankful that the likes of Kucinich and Gravel deign to call themselves members of YOUR political party. You don't deserve them.

If Kucinich were young, better looking, better with words, and more charismatic, he would have a better chance with the same agenda. Very sad, but it is true.

I don't think that's true. I think he was too unwilling to play ball with the bad people who have hurt America, and even the Democrats and the media refused to give him any exposure. When he spoke, people responded, the way they do to Obama.

If looks and charm were a qualifier, I can think of a hundred people who wouldn't be where they are in public office at this moment.

Call me stupid, but I find Kucinich charming and sexy.

It is pathetic. We allow our voting public the deep honor and responsibility of electing its own leaders, and they treat it as superficially as if it were an election for Homecoming Queen.

Had he lived, Paul Wellstone would have probably been an interesting person this year.

Search YouTube for his clips. He's very good with words. Unfortunately, the low-information voters who support Hillary with such unbending zeal would have considered Rep. Kucinich way too progressive for their teeny tiny little event horizon.

Kucinich was blacklisted by the media, including Huffington Post. When he spoke people responded, as they do with Obama. The media made sure he didn't get a chance to speak, even in the debates.

Kucinich was far too courageous and honest to get a fair shake from people who had everything to lose with a real lion for the people in the White House.

Obama is our best chance, because he's just moderate enough that "they" might let him get elected (and take the fall for Bush's mess). Kucinich scared them.

Speak for yourself about better looking and better with words. Kucinich shone, for me.

The chance was taken away from him by the media that blacklisted him, including Huffington Post.

I could see him on Obama's ticket, but it would seem upside-down.

Senator Reid is not fit to utter Congressman Kucinich's name. Except in awe.

Kucinich had the guts to do what Reid did not: tell the truth, and take on the impeachment of Richard Bruce Cheney and George W. Bush.

Shame on you, Senator Reid.

Kucinich's attempt to introduce articles of impeachment was just political masturbation.
It was never going to be voted on, and there was no chance of a conviction in a Senate trial.

Get over it.
It's history.
We have more important fish to fry now.

The pendulum of the country is swinging to the left. On issue after issue, the majority of the country overwhelmingly supports the Democratic approach.

While the media has primarily focused on the personalities of the Democratic primary, what they have missed is that there has been a civil war within the party. The conservative Dems have attempted to maintain their power and the status quo, while the liberals and progressives and activists have attempted to bring about dramactic change. The defeat of Hillary Clinton is a sign that the days of the DLC, Blue Dogs, and Clinton triagulation will soon be over. Change; it's a beautiful thing.

Taxing the rich to death: Going right
I could go on all day. This country is going centrist, which is right where it should be. The fact that it's ekeing from extreme right in a leftward direction doesn't mean that we're swinging left.

If everybody had the same thinking on issues, and a Senate Majority Leader merely had to tally the votes, we wouldn't need a senator in that job. We could have a high school kid do it.

But it doesn't work that way. It is Reid's JOB to find common ground with blue dog Democrats and moderate Republicans. It is his JOB to build on that and find legislation they can all agree on. Even Orrin Hatch was on board for an increase in SCHIP funding, no thanks to Reid.

He has been extremely ineffective and spineless. He has to go. Bring on Dodd.

If there are not enough votes, then they should try to vote anyway. This would put pressure on some Republicans and show they are at least trying. Who knows some Republicans may break with the party line and vote for truth, justice, and the American way. They can always vote again when they do have more votes. I mean if the Republican party has not been more lubed up and ready for massive probing I don't know how they could spread their legs any wider.

Okay, this is it. He and I and Pelosi are in agreement. This president is the worst in American history. Okay, now, Mr. Reid, now that we can agree on this point, what are you going to do about it? I remember the day in Bush's state of the union so long ago when he said that Iraq was building weapons of mass destruction. He said this on the heels of 911. He threatened our country with pnuoouckQuulur destruction from a country he knew did not have these weapons? I believe what he did was threaten us with a terrorist threat that did not exist in order to gain powers from us, in order to kill our own children in war and to make killers of them of innocent people who never attacked us ever. That is an overt breaking of the law. You can't make terrorist threats. You can't yell bomb at the airport. That is what he did and for gain, in order to kill more people than we had just killed in Afganistan. What are you going to do about it, Congress? At this point I get mad at my do nothing congress, perhaps, more than I would at them, because these are the ones that I voted for, these are the ones who are supposed to be representing me. This is supposed to be my family yet they are failing to rally to the protection of their own.

Actually, the proper words to fittingly describe how bad a president W. Bush has been since his 1/2001 appointment by the Republican-stacked Supreme Court are yet to be coined. Bush and his administration have performed so piss-poorly in office that their conduct defies definition. Now that McClellan has begun to speak out and to tell the truth about, at least, some of their crimes, I expect the
shit to hit the fan at such an accelerated rate that W. and company will be buried in it up to their ears
by the time all is said and done.
To this, I say it's about time. The Republican Revolution of Newt Gingrich, Trent Lott and the rest of
the race-baiters of the Republican-Rightwing should quickly come to a complete close after Election Day,2008, and when it does, I think the entire GOP, W. Bush and his criminal administration includ-
ed, will have a bit more than just a little Hell to pay for their treasonist conduct while "serving" in the
highest branches of the Federal Government.

Where do I even begin?

I will acknowledge that his argument about majorities isn't total Bull S**t,
The problem with that argument is that it doesn't hold water under scrutiny.
The impatience the American people have with government inaction and lawlessness
is not just limited to George Bush. There is an underlying principle that Reid is missing.
Obstacles are only temporary excuses when it comes to defending the Constitution of the United States (The most beautiful set of civil principles on earth)
Democratic leadership has shown such traitorous political will, that they no longer have real credibility in the eyes of the citizenry. Barack Obama's coat tails are only so big. and the list of politicians attempting to ride his coat tails into the hearts of Americans grows longer every day.
Now I honestly believe that Harry Reid is a decent man, but true leadership is a requirement, to hold such a senior post as Sen Majority leader. Leadership requires that you believe in your self and your constituents enough to take political risk in order to create the country you invision. Here lies the central theme behind the failure of Reid, Pelosi, and Clinton alike. Political triangulation/cowardess. An individual unable or unwilling to take political risk in order to fight for their own stated beliefs, is not a leader. Your title does not make you a leader, your actions and the way people respond makes you that.
