The BBC reported last night that an uncontacted tribe had been discovered on the border between Brazil and Peru.

According to the Guardian, there are around 100 uncontacted tribes in the world. "Survival International estimates more than half are in the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon."

The National Indian Foundation, a government agency in Brazil, took these photos and published them Thursday. According to CNN, "it tracks "uncontacted tribes" -- indigenous groups that are thought to have had no contact with outsiders -- and seeks to protect them from encroachment.

They and their relatives apparently live in six communal shelters known as malocas, according to the government, which has tracked at least four uncontacted groups in the region for the last 20 years.

The photos were taken during 20 hours of flights conducted between April 28 and May 2.

Now that they've been found, they are screwed. Ask the American Indians...

Call me crazy, but isn't that some type of metalic pot, obviously manufactured by, or at least derived from,, European Americans, sitting on the fire in the clearing? If so, then they have evidently had some type of contact with traders, European Americans, or someone from the "outside." European contact, whether direct or indirect, will have thus influenced them, rendering anthropological hopes of a "pure" and virgin society obsolete.

I don't think you are crazy but I do think you haven't been thinking too much about Incas and Aztecs, to which these natives would trace their origin. Both were metalurgical before exposure to the West.

I feel bad about these people being exposed.

I hope they are allowed to remain as is and left alone.

Do we have to spoil every last inch of this planet?

Quick, lets find a way to blame this on BUSH....

Although one probably could find a way to blame this on Witless, there's enough other stuff out there for the worst President ever.

Can't blame this on Bush, have to wait until he praises a US/Israeli backed violation of international law and national sovereignty by having Colombian forces breach Brasilian airspace and bomb the isolated tribe to kingdom come. Headlines "Bush praises destruction of terist cell" "Uribe says no troops crossed border/ tiffany lamp collection and proof of lockness monster recovered from bomb site" Foreign news reports "4 Swiss scholars killed, on maimed, in illegal bombing".

Breaking News!! Breaking News!! in the midst of almost 1 gazillion tapes Discovery Channel has just discovered a dusty 10 year old footage of these so called "New tribes". The footage has been rusting away in their volt because the Discovery Channel did not need it any more. When they first made contact with this tribe ten years ago they were informed by the elder that National Geographic had contacted them five years earlier and the contract they had signed with them was still binding.

The figure in "black" is definitly female. Don't many of these kinds of cultures grant "Shaman" status to females? The photo of the warrior shooting an arrow at the copter and appearing to be wearing a "nike" like sneaker is just an illusion if you enlarge the photo you can see his left foot firmly on the ground next to a clump of lighter value "sticks". Great stuff if authentic.

Well, how does a flyby tell these "scientists" that this "tribe" (not "village" mind you, but "tribe") has not been contacted by Peruvian or Brazilian military or civilians years ago?

They have the nerve to determine them "lost" because of a few flybys?

It may turn out that you are right. They may have contacted society already and are just hiding out. The brandishing of weapons and naive act just an attempt to avoid a visit.

Why would the Brazilian government wish to perpetrate a hoax? Besides, there are anthropologists and others who say that that is an area that has many uncontacte3d tribes. The way the roofs of the huts have been covered by the inhabiters appears like camaflouge against the ground they are on. This makes me think it is more likely to be a true find. Uncontacted does not necessarily mean unaware.

"Why would the Brazilian government wish to perpetrate a hoax?"

Oh Morenot, this is Brazil we are talking about! :-)
Besides, this tribe is deemed "uncontacted" by one agency. Some or all of these villagers could have come in contact with Brazilian or Peruvian military or civilians; contacts which could go undocumented. That is a possibility, but "savages" afraid of planes in this day and age sounds a little too contrived for me.

If they are "uncontacted" why should it matter what "the day and age" is? They are at a level of development that would be similar to any peoples who are making a first contact with a technological society. I meant that the fact that they had made an effort to disguise their dwellings by blending into the landscape is an effect that "I" observed that could support it's authenticity. Hoaxers are often not very clever or subtle.

Hey, looks like they got it going on so leave them alone. I feel bad now by trying to interpret the images from a comfortable position. I'm sure we scared them to death trying to know what we are there.

Perhaps we should approach in the dead of night using some sort of sleeping gas and do all sorts of medical tests on them while they're unconscious. While we're at it, let's do it in saucer-shaped aircraft.
