Updated below with video of angry Clinton supporter being escorted from the building.

When is a Reuben sandwich not just a Reuben sandwich? When one eats it amidst a denizen of rabidly committed, frequently vitriolic, and unapologetically devoted Hillary Clinton supporters.

The scene at Harry's Pub in the Marriott Hotel, downstairs from the site of the Rules and Bylaws Committee hearing, was emblematic of the double-edged sword that has become the Democratic primary. One the one hand was the political passion: the willingness to stand in solidarity over the idea of counting the votes in Michigan and Florida, even if such a protest was scheduled on a Saturday under torrential rain.

On the other hand were the battered emotions: the ardent vows to not support Sen. Barack Obama under any circumstances, the insistence that every insidious rumor concerning the Illinois Democrat was grounded in fact, the belief that the party itself had conspired in an effort to tear down the Clintons.

With half a dozen flat screen televisions turned to CNN, it was not difficult to ascertain just where the political and emotional center of the crowd stood. A table of three women did not deal in discretion. A sampling of their punditry:

"[Obama] is a cult. His campaign is an anti-woman cult."

"I will actively campaign against him."

"You know who is backing him is George Soros. It'll be George Soros, not Obama, who is running the country."

"South Dakota is totally rigged for Obama because of Tom Daschle. Obama's going to win South Dakota because he's buying it and rigging it."

Story continues below
advertisement

"[Obama] is a socialist! You know what the Nazi Party was before it was the Nazi Party? It was the Socialist Party."

It was not all that different from the mood outside, where signs read, "At least slaves were counted as 3/5ths a Citizen," and some pamphlets detailed Obama's supposed dealings in drugs and gay sex. The latter being handed out by Larry Sinclair, the youtube opportunist who has claimed to have had an affair with the Senator.

"Would you rather have a president who had an affair [Bill Clinton] or one who was a murderer [Obama]?" Eve Fairbanks, a reporter with The New Republic, was asked by one protester.

Back in Harry's, passions did not ebb. Amidst the chatter came raucous cheers for any Clinton surrogate whose face popped up on the television screen. They were countered by derisive boos when CNN cut to a clip of DNC Chairman Howard Dean. It didn't matter what he said. You couldn't hear it over the crowd's hissing.

I approached a group of Clinton supporters sitting at the bar to pinpoint, exactly, the foundation of their emotions. Almost unanimously they agreed that if Florida and Michigan weren't seated in their entirety, they would never vote for Obama.

As women, were they comfortable with a candidate like John McCain who could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade?

"Oh don't pull that argument," said Valerie Duhaime of Florida. "Obama did not support a filibuster of [Supreme Court Justice Samuel] Alito and he was for [Chief Justice] John Roberts before he was against him."

Within the pub's confines, Obama was not the only persona non grata. The media, too, occupied a dark place in the crowd's heart. The group at the bar went through a litany of websites that they no longer read -- including the Huffington Post. "I only watch the BBC," said Duhaime. "We are outsourcing the fourth estate."

Shortly after revealing my publication, I was turned away. No worries, my lunch, a Reuben sandwich, had arrived. I pulled up my chair to the table and sat down to eat. Minutes later a chant began around me.

"HuffPost sucks! HuffPost sucks!" and later, "Fox News, fair and balanced! Fox News, fair and balanced!"

Update: As caught by Firedoglake, late in the day an angry Clinton supporter was escorted from the building after she went on a tirade blasting Barack Obama, a racial double standard, and the Democratic Party. "I'm no second class citizen," she declares, "and god damn the Democrats."

I hope the whole lot of them goes over to the GOP. They'll fit RIGHT in over there. Then when they lose, they'll only be able to blame themselves.
Talk about cult members.
Is this what the racist feminists of the civil rights era were like? They turned to race baiting as a way to put women's rights ahead of civil rights for blacks, and now they are race baiting to put Hillary ahead of the true nominee. You heard the video quote .."inadequate black man"... what difference does the color make? None, unless it matters to you, or the person you are yelling at.

As somebody who marched for both racial and gender justice, I am finding it really hard to understand the feminists who keep claiming that Obama should have waited his turn. Especially since Bill Clinton jumped the line in 2000. That complaint is seen by some feminists as sufficient justification for them to vote against their own best interests and ours. WHY?

I am frightened by the anger and fervor of these women (as show in the film clips and photographs), and I suspect that their scary behavior will make it much harder to anybody (including me) in their age group to find a job. NO employer wants somebody on his team who will turn against the company for some small or imagined slight. Will people look at any late-middle aged female stranger's face and see nothing but its potential to contort into some kind of twisted fury?

I see two or three generations of women's progress going into the toilet because Hillary has succeeded in inflaming the passions of these loose cannons.

Women will have their Obama sooner than that, There are more qualified women every day. One day one honest woman with charisma and the right values will come along. Who ever heard of Barack 6 short years ago.

I've been trying to understand why these women/Hillary supporters are so angry -- angry enough to turn against the Democratic party. This article/video does not exactly give me an explaination but I see the picture a bit more clearly.

They really are not giving women a good reputation, are they? As a middle age white woman & Obama supporter, I was for Hillary in the beginning. And as much as I dislike a lot of her tactics I would still vote for her over McCain. Maybe this was supposed to be her turn, maybe not. But how can it be anyone but her own fault, her own campaign's fault, that she lost? She had the edge in the beginning!

dawlishgal: Bill Clinton did not jump the line in 2000. He was finishing up his second term as President in 2000.

Thanks for playing.

what concerns me most, is that Hillary supporters are turning to Fox news, Rush, and other sources of the right wing news media. These are the same outlets that attacked Bill and Hillary during the Clinton Admin. Fox and Rush are just using bitter Hillary supporters to fuel the fire between Obama and Clinton supporters. They are trying to tear the Dem party apart, while they laugh at the chaos. I often monitor sites like Taylor Marsh and Hillary is 44, They are constantly talking about Fox and Rush and how they are supporting Hillary. Don't Hillary supporters realize, that if Hillary was the probable nominee, that Fox, Rush, etc. would be tearing Clinton apart just like they are doing to Obama.

Democrats please unite, don't be used by the ring wing rebub media...

I hear hillary supporters constantly calling into sean hannity's radio show to tear Obama down. it boggles the mind to try and understand this way of thinking. I would never call hannity, rush or fox news to complain about hillary even after all the divisive things she's done in this campagin.

Let us not forget the Brooks Brothers Riot of 2000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//Brooks_Brothers_riot).
These demonstrations have a familiar smell.

Hillary fans -- please direct your anger appropriately. Obama didn't create the Hillary nutcracker.

Don't blame Hillary for Obama's failures. If Obama was actually a LEADER, he would give us a reason to vote for him. She will leave when she feels sure that we're taken care of and not a minute before. As far as we know, Obama still thinks we're ignorant and clinging to God and guns. Yeah--that sounds like someone I can respect.

This is why you don't belittle your opponent in a primary. You end up with supporters like that who throw reason to the wind. I really hope HC can really fix this when this is over. She brought this kind of behavior on us and it's appalling becasue some of her supporters think it's okay too.

Thankfully, these rather pathetic outbursts are few and far between.
When one candidate brings out the best in people, and the other encourages the worst in people, it should be a slam dunk of who to vote for. I'm a proud member of the latte sipping crowd and don't hang with negative people, however, I'll try to nudge any misguided voter along to deliver a solid win for Obama on the West Coast.

Clinton is doing the nation a disservice by not chastising these people for their actions, but perhaps she is instigating it herself? I almost expect a politician to be singularly self-interested, but for a chunk her followers to act like that is frightening.

Just what do you ladies stand for anyway? Aren't you supposed to help everyone out as a progressive - even give health insurance to the poor Republicans? (Or should there be an ideological purity test for government benefits?)

To think that a person would vote for someone who we KNOW will start another war, simply out of spite because their candidate didn't make it, is heinous.

Heinous.

If the Republicans win, the Clintons will be remembered as the reason for another war, and a conservative supreme court.

(Frankly, I would not put it past them to connive this: Bill is now such buddies w/Bush Sr., and connected to many right-wing organizations, AND had carved up MUCHO regulations while in office, bombed iraq, started an unprovoked war (Kosovo) for resources (triblinka coal complex), wife voted for iraq war ... the Clintons are likely with "them" and, this whole charade gladly staged to help McCain win, since they are out of it, and everyone is falling for it. they are covert Democrats working for the neocon elites as Democratic plants to keep the party the center-right, or dead)

My version of the truth of race in politics:
- Some white Clinton supporters WILL actually vote for McCain in Nov. Other white Clinton supporters will vote Democratic and vote for Obama (in all likelihood).
- Some white Clinton supporters are racist. Other white Clinton supporters are not racist.
- Some white Clinton supporters are fanatics. Other white Clinton supporters are not.

When you look at the exit polls, a great majority of white Clinton supporters will vote Democratic, are not racist and are not fanatics. All it takes is a small but very vocal group of McCain voting, racist fanatics to make ALL Hillary supporters look bad. I'm always encouraged by people who wanted Hillary but are doing the prudent thing and voicing their support for the Democratic nominee, even if it's Obama. We need these people to be more vocal.

Unfortunately, the fanatics will always make the news and moderation is drowned into the background. : The only person who can really fix this from a PR standpoint is Hillary herself and she has chosen not to do this with the full force necessary.

I will not allow the media to dictate who I vote for. They backed Obama 100%, and now they're
telling Clinton supporters we have to vote for Obama. B.S.! Next election, we can skip the campaigning and just have the media pick our president.

I hate to have to explain the obvious, but you set, there's this thing called voting booths and people go to them and vote and then delegates are apportioned according to the vote and then the candidate with the most delegates past a certain number (i.e. 2118) wins. Very simple and basic. People vote, one person wins another loses. Some people except it and others are SORE LOSERS. Some people are mature and others are still very much like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum because they don't get their way.

hillarysupporter.

The media and these insane Obama cult followers are telling all Hillary supporters we should shut the he!! up. We have no right to say one word against their cult GOD. Do what I do, tell them all to go to he!!. Us Hillary supporters are stronger and smarter than any of these dim wits ever will be. We put America before the backstabbing DEM party.

"Hillary supporter" the fight is not over. We are taking it all the way to the WH. We are fighting for our great country. Bush and Cheneys cousin will NEVER be president. We will take our fight all the way. Obama needs us Hillary supporters to win. And he will never get us. So he loses in a landslide in November. We are in charge of who the next President will be. AND IT WILL NEVER BE OBALIAR. Our votes will show the entire world who is really in charge of this election.

ObaLIAR, his cult followers and the mass media are going to cry themselves several oceans when we are done with them. Hillary supporters have all the power and it grows stronger everyday.

The media is not dictating who you vote for! What is wrong with you guys and gals? You're a democrat? Then you vote democratic! Period. Quit blaming the media for telling you to vote one way or another. They've done that since 24 hour news was standard, but that doesn't mean they shape my mind!!! What happened to you thinking for yourself. You're going to throw out your values to spite the media who doesn't give a s--t about you?!? For what? To prove a point to whom? Wake up! You're a democrat! NOW VOTE THAT WAY! Where are your values?

I would not exactly call the media fair, but when it comes to negative reporting, no one gets a pass.

I agree, or at least I hope. There is definitely a "racial" element to some of them. They are outraged that this "black" man is taking something from a "white" woman. It's really disturbing. I do wonder if some of the fanatics are new to the political process in the first place and thus don't understand the nature of a primary campaign (whereby somebody has to be declared the loser) and his/her supporters feel sad for a while, but get over it and keep their eye on the big picture. Perhaps groups like NARAL and others can emphasize the Roe v. Wade issue and others in upcoming advertisements and remind women of what they stand to lose if they cling to resentment. Of course 5 months is a long time, I think hurt feelings will go away for most. Hillary's behavior after Obama is declared the nominee will make a big difference on how her supporters subsequently behave.
