Updated below with video of angry Clinton supporter being escorted from the building.

When is a Reuben sandwich not just a Reuben sandwich? When one eats it amidst a denizen of rabidly committed, frequently vitriolic, and unapologetically devoted Hillary Clinton supporters.

The scene at Harry's Pub in the Marriott Hotel, downstairs from the site of the Rules and Bylaws Committee hearing, was emblematic of the double-edged sword that has become the Democratic primary. One the one hand was the political passion: the willingness to stand in solidarity over the idea of counting the votes in Michigan and Florida, even if such a protest was scheduled on a Saturday under torrential rain.

On the other hand were the battered emotions: the ardent vows to not support Sen. Barack Obama under any circumstances, the insistence that every insidious rumor concerning the Illinois Democrat was grounded in fact, the belief that the party itself had conspired in an effort to tear down the Clintons.

With half a dozen flat screen televisions turned to CNN, it was not difficult to ascertain just where the political and emotional center of the crowd stood. A table of three women did not deal in discretion. A sampling of their punditry:

"[Obama] is a cult. His campaign is an anti-woman cult."

"I will actively campaign against him."

"You know who is backing him is George Soros. It'll be George Soros, not Obama, who is running the country."

"South Dakota is totally rigged for Obama because of Tom Daschle. Obama's going to win South Dakota because he's buying it and rigging it."

Story continues below
advertisement

"[Obama] is a socialist! You know what the Nazi Party was before it was the Nazi Party? It was the Socialist Party."

It was not all that different from the mood outside, where signs read, "At least slaves were counted as 3/5ths a Citizen," and some pamphlets detailed Obama's supposed dealings in drugs and gay sex. The latter being handed out by Larry Sinclair, the youtube opportunist who has claimed to have had an affair with the Senator.

"Would you rather have a president who had an affair [Bill Clinton] or one who was a murderer [Obama]?" Eve Fairbanks, a reporter with The New Republic, was asked by one protester.

Back in Harry's, passions did not ebb. Amidst the chatter came raucous cheers for any Clinton surrogate whose face popped up on the television screen. They were countered by derisive boos when CNN cut to a clip of DNC Chairman Howard Dean. It didn't matter what he said. You couldn't hear it over the crowd's hissing.

I approached a group of Clinton supporters sitting at the bar to pinpoint, exactly, the foundation of their emotions. Almost unanimously they agreed that if Florida and Michigan weren't seated in their entirety, they would never vote for Obama.

As women, were they comfortable with a candidate like John McCain who could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade?

"Oh don't pull that argument," said Valerie Duhaime of Florida. "Obama did not support a filibuster of [Supreme Court Justice Samuel] Alito and he was for [Chief Justice] John Roberts before he was against him."

Within the pub's confines, Obama was not the only persona non grata. The media, too, occupied a dark place in the crowd's heart. The group at the bar went through a litany of websites that they no longer read -- including the Huffington Post. "I only watch the BBC," said Duhaime. "We are outsourcing the fourth estate."

Shortly after revealing my publication, I was turned away. No worries, my lunch, a Reuben sandwich, had arrived. I pulled up my chair to the table and sat down to eat. Minutes later a chant began around me.

"HuffPost sucks! HuffPost sucks!" and later, "Fox News, fair and balanced! Fox News, fair and balanced!"

Update: As caught by Firedoglake, late in the day an angry Clinton supporter was escorted from the building after she went on a tirade blasting Barack Obama, a racial double standard, and the Democratic Party. "I'm no second class citizen," she declares, "and god damn the Democrats."

Lots of commenters have made great points about the risks to the Democratic nominee, Clinton's own hand in fostering this mentality, and about the inherent wrongness and racism of what this woman has said on video. However, there's a lot of vengeance and rot-in-hell attitude here too that I find offensive too.

Compassion, which is typically valued by progressives and liberals, is in order here. This person feels pain, and this is why she is lashing out in anger. As with all societal wrongs that stem from inequality, they continue to do damage in ways that may seem illogical. Mrs. Christian may feel deeply how women have been wronged for most of her life, and her worldview may be forever skewed. It's up to us to not fuel her rage, but to invite her to see things the other way, and to yes, have hope, and to believe that people can change. Sound familiar?

If Obama's campaign has proven anything, it's that people who are filled with frustration and anger (and even "enemies") are best approached with a positive message. Now is a time for national reconciliation. I know it's hard, but I for one would like to try.

UrbanInterloper, you are so right. All of us need a time out and to look for some inner peace. This is a crucial election because the country is in such a dire state. As Democratic Party members we have the opportunity to make systemic changes to insure that we all do better, live better and grow better. To do tis we need all of us to move forward, win the election, and tackle the hard issues that separate us like sexism and bigotry.

Unlike a lot of people I have found life much better since I stopped watching TV news. Try it. The world is less scary and issues are not so overwhelming. I rather read peacefully about what is going on in the world for myself.

To my Hillary Clinton supporting family and friends welcome to Obama '08. I know that you are disappointed but you are welcome at "Obama for President." He will do us proud. Know that I love you!

Every campaign has it's fringe elements. Big deal, Harriet Christian is upset. Obama has crazy,
white-hating, America-hating pastors. I agree with Bill O'Reilly: you can't fault Obama for the crazy
racist pastors. So you know there are whites and women who resent Obama. So what. I don't like
how Obama just waltzes in there and thinks he's going to be President. It won't be so easy for him
in November.

I'm with you until the "waltzes in" part.

This race has hardly been a waltz. Obama has worked and fought just as hard as anyone to get where he is, and and I don't think he has any delusion that the general will be "easy."

explain "took" johnnnn. really, explain it. who did he "take" it from? how did he "take" it? your language implies that the nomination belonged to somebody else. who might that be? it didn't belong to anybody when this started, however the media cast Clinton and the likely candidate, so much so that when she boldly stated with a smug laugh, "It won't go past February 5th," nobody in the media batted an eyelash. So don't tell me that he "bulldozed" anything. He ran a campaign that worked. Hillary ran a campaign that was short-sighted and made the assumption that her opponents were weak. She was wrong. saying that one candidate "took" the nomination from another candidate is insulting.

i think the "waltzing" is one of the things that clintons supporters often cite about obama. they see him as a young, smooth talking, well-dressed whipper snapper who should be in the back of the line for president, way behind hillary. she represents hard work, and he represents undeserved fortune.

a lot of people are seeing a long held dream come crashing down right now, and for those of us who didnt share that dream its hard to understand. the hatred of obama seems bizarre, as he ran a very respectful campaign. he beat her strategically, nothing underhanded.

when the tears dry i hope these people will see things more clearly. if clinton gets strongly behind obama, i know they will.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT too many FOLK BELIEVE OR THINK "entitlement" to the Presidency is a major criteria for running and hopefully winning the election. The fact is the American people have been speaking ( delegates and voters alike) and would have spoken for the final time when the primaries end tommorrow and it is obvious what they care about--not who should be in the "back of the line". What matters is who we/they collectively believe can best lead this country into the 21st centruy so that peoples' quality of life can be improved and future generations will be safer than we are today.

"Waltzes"? They are competing in EVERY single primary. He won more delegates than her. I'd hardly call that walzing. I know many Hillary supporters have wholeheartedly adopted the Clinton talking point that she has a better chance of winning in November and that he won't or will have a very hard time winning in November, but have any of you actually investigated this yourself a little better. One important point, many of these "big" states that Hillary won in the primaries will go democrat no matter who is on the ticket. They are liberal states, it is a no brainer. I suggest you go to those websites that show the electoral map in 2004 and allows you to play around in it to see how Obama or Clinton might do. You would be surprised. Obama does better in the West than Clinton. He does better in Wisconsin and Virginia. She does better in Ohio and Michigan. Both will win Pennsylvania (it has gone democrat since 1988). If you take the time to find out for yourself, you will see that Obama's appeal to independents and republicans, not just democrats gives him a decided advantage.

P.S. West Virginia and Kentucky will go republican regardless of who is on the ticket, they are Irrelevant to the general election. This is the difference between spin and reality.

Let's do the electoral map. I give Obama Hawaii, Calif., Oregon, Washington, D.C.,
Washington State, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont, NY(sigh, my state), New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and, if you insist Pennsylvania. That's it.
Guess what? He does not get 270 electoral votes. Obama loses.

WHOA -the comments Hillary supporters were making are EXACTLY like the GOP! I think they all listened to their God, Rush Limbaugh, went and voted for Hillary (and are now engaging in phony protests) to completely f&^k up the nomination process. Kind of reminds me of the phony protests in FL staged by Rove, called the Brooks Brother Riot.

http://www.democrats.com/joel-kaplan

During the 2000 Florida Presidential recount, IRS documents showed that the Bush campaign, through Rove and James Baker, organized approximately 250 operatives and flew them to Florida to protest the Florida recount. To transport the "protesters," the Bush campaign used jets owned by Enron and Halliburton.

THESE ARE REAL HARD WORKING PEOPLE WHO TOOK TIME OFF THEIR REAL JOBS TO TRAVEL SOMETIMES LONG DISTANCES TO D.C. WE SUPPORT HILLARY ALL THE WAY AND OUR VOICES WILL BE HEARD.

MY FAMILY, FRIENDS AND I WERE AT THAT MEETING. AND WE SAW FIRST HAND THE HATRED THE DNC HAD FOR US AND FOR HILLARY. THE DNC HAS TURNED INTO THE LOWEST LIFE FORMS ON EARTH.

THEY SEE OBAMA AS WEAK. AND THEY THINK HAVING HIM AS THEIR NOMINEE WILL GIVE THEM THE POWER THEY HAVE ALWAYS WANTED. EVEN THOUGH AT THE SAME TIME THEY KNOW OBAMA WILL NEVER BEAT MC CAIN IN NOVEMBER. SO THEY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THAT POWER. THE COWARD DNC ISN'T CAPABLE OF TELLING A BLACK MAN TO HIS FACE THAT HE NEEDS TO STEP DOWN FOR THE GOOD OF THE PARTY. THEY RATHER LOSE IN A LANDSLIDE IN NOV THAN HAVE THAT TALK. THEY KNOW THE HILLARY ROAD IS THE ONLY WAY TO THE WH, BUT THERE IS NO POWER THAT WAY.

Your yelling is doing nothing and did nothing but make you look foolish.
If you are really a Democrat and not a Limbaugh plant, then you have to appreciate that whatever you think about OBAMA it is best to keep it to yourself.

The Press did not win this for OBAMA. He won it himself by not making the huge mistakes that Hillary made and by running on his own qualifications- not his spouses.

But I think your real agenda is divulged by this statement of yours. "The coward DNC isn't capable of telling a black man to his face that he needs to step down for the good of the party." Why on God's Green's Earth should someone who has won step down? Is it possible that you just can't accept that a black man might be the President? Sad, sad, sad.

What a pity that her children and grandchildren aren't the only ones who will be hurt by her vote for another repub term. In her whole tirade, she had no reason beyond sex to support her candidate. She's old enough to know that the democratic party only recently started allowing ALL states and territories a chance to voice their opinion in the matter of a nominee (and it's only that - an opinion, not a vote that binds them to anything) She sounds like some rich NYC spoiled, self-centered, arrogant, know-it-all who needs all or nothing. It has nothing to do with race, sex or religion.
In the 2004 elections, Americans failed the intelligence test. It looks like 2008 will bring quite a few of those stupid people back to the booth.

The democratic party is the NEW Jim Crow party. Now you see how segregated and racist the party is when you have words like the "inadequate black man" being mentioned.

Yes, and whites will vote for John McCain because of the Hillary situation. They will...this is not a suprise. This goes to show you that WHITES despite all they say about we are not racist..they really are. This election proves it! You know when Bill Clinton got the majority of the black vote in both elections there wasn't a problem. Now that Obama gets a majority there is a problem but both Bill & Obama are alike in that they are change candidates and pretty smart. Thats why they got the votes.

Question: Blacks have been loyal to the party no matter what every election. Even if Obama lost, Blacks would still vote for Clinton because the GOAL is to elect a Democrat..Always Mad or not mad!
But white democrats show their true feelings and so-called party unity and will go and vote for McCain out of revenge. Yeah, racism is alive and well in America!!!

Tell the truth here, Poundcake. SOME whites will not vote for Obama because they're bigots, or racists. That's not news. For you to say WHITES as though none will vote for Obama is clearly a broad, inaccurate generalization. It's not news that racism is alive. What's worth noting is the instance of it is declining among whites, especially in ages below 60 yrs old. My daughter is 18 and doesn't know a single white person her age who's not voting for Obama. Change takes time, and there will always be racism, but I do think we've made great progress and will continue to do so.

I mean, not all white democrat women are racist and angry. A huge portion of us, like me, share your dismay and are supporting Obama because we can see past the politics of race and gender to support the most worthy candidate, as we see them.

Actually, historically it was the old Jim Crow Party. It wasn't until Nixon's Southern Strategy that Republicans dominated the Southern racist vote.

One thing to remember: Hillary does well with this so-called white working class voter in only a few of the really down and out industrial eastern states (Penn and Ohio) and in Appalaccia. Obama does better with this demographic in the rest of the country. A lot of this is spin by the Clinton campaign. There are Pockets of the country that are clearly racist (West Virginia and Kentucky), but Obama is loved in Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, North and South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia, Maine, and the Pacific West. Racism may exist, but (thank god!) they are dinnosaurs and dying out quickly.

Divide and conquer. It's the Republicans only prayer, and it seems to be working at the moment. Harriet's rant is so void of fact and off the wall, I'd swear she was a Republican plant. We are seeing classic Republican tactics from within the Democratic Party. Republicans hijack everything. Why not hijack Democrats, too? We seem to be helping them. Not voting for Clinton is no more sexist than not voting for Obama is racist. I believe that the majority of Democrats are neither sexist nor racist - and if we don't stop eating our own, we'll lose a very, very important election in November and have only ourselves to blame. We have got to get it together - now.

Well here is how it looks to me. I have mostly Obama friends like me but more than a few were originally for Clinton. Several have stopped speaking to me til after the election, and others (older women, feminists like moi) are marginalizing themselves with their rage and despair over Clinton. I have heard increasing desperation from the die hard Clintonites, which begins to start sounding like racism after a very short while.

What I saw and felt from the Obama side. More and more frustration at the feeling that she was actively sabotaging Obama and that turning into rage which then easily morphed into sexism. All in all a disgusting and Balkanizing display.

I call people on Huffpost.com constantly on sexism, and have noticed that other older feministas have stopped posting, though we love Obama because they are grossed out by the misogyny/sexism, is my guess.

I was originally for Webb or Edwards as veep, valuing strategy and effectiveness, but now am convinced that to save the day it's got to be a White Woman. I hate that kind of tokenism, but am liking Sibelius better day by day. We must stanch the bleeding!!!

The Republicans must be laughing their a@#$#s off at their good fortune.

Hillary, PLEASE get out of the way now. No one is going to vote for you in '12 if Obama loses on your account. You must know this.

I am one of those female Obama supporters digusted by Clinton's tactics.

I love Kathleen Sibelius, she is the definition of class and SO different from Clinton. I would love her on the VP slot, but I've heard that many diehard Clinton supporters will take it as an insult if he puts a woman on the ticket who is not Hillary. Damned if he does damned if he doesn't. The best thing would be for Clinton to publicly say that she is not interested in VP and wants to go back to the Senate, then Obama is not blamed for not picking her and is free to pick Kathleen Sibelius. I am curious about how the polls will be a month from now when all this has died down and Hillary has wholeheartedly (I hope!) endorsed Obama. Will he bounce back with women? It is really hard to tell how many of her supporters are so diehard as to refuse to give him a chance and how many can see reason after they have mourned the loss of their candidate and have healed from the loss.

Thank heavens the old ,angry, bitter women and their ilk is dying out. They are being replaced with much smarter Global citizens. This poor woman on the video is a perfect example of a "don't".

It's ridiculous to rest all womanhood's hopes in the guise/person of Hillary Clinton. What a self-defeating thing to do. Not only has Hillary had the Republicans polarized against her for years, she's now polarizing the Democrats as well.

I agree, she is the most polarizing figure in the political scene today. More polarizing than Bush, because Bush actually unified the country AGAINST HIM.

In the beginning, I leaned toward Clinton, but felt I could live with either Clinton or Obama as President, if that's the way it shook out. What changed my mind and continues to give me grave concerns is the overwhelming deluge of rage and hate generated by the Obama-ites.

Obama doesn't have to get his hands dirty. He has a healthy propaganda machine that does all the dirty work for him. Even the mildest suggestion or question regarding Obama is met with an avalanche of blistering, spewing, slavering, savage attacks, like my earlier comment wherein I tried to bridge some understanding of why that poor woman would be as angry as she is. And you have all proved my point anew.

The Obama suporters strayed from the issues long ago, preferring to cherry pick (and often very unfactually) from the personal columns, dealing in ad hominem attacks and complete distortions of the truth. If the same kind of vituperation had been directed at Sen. Obama, the outcry would have been deafening, screaming racism and god knows what.

Considering the Flower-Power, warm and fuzzy "Change" platform being proffered, the corresponding zealotry is alarming, to say the least. It is what has raised flags for me and it is what has alarmed and angered many Clinton supporters and others, like me, who were initially on the fence. If anything has polarized the Democrats, it's you.

Or maybe she's just fed up... And maybe being replaced by "much smarter Global citizens" won't be as advantageous as you would think. Not if they are the type that will try to trivialize and marginalize someone with an opposing view, as you have just done.

Her opposing view, as she expressed it, is based entirely on superficial qualities of both candidates, and deserves to be trivialized and marginalized. To her, Hillary's defeat was a consequence of the low status of women, even lower than the status of a "black man," and had nothing to do with Hillary's vote to authorize the invasion of Iraq, her allergy to truth and her poorly run campaign. It is racist and sexist to characterize the candidates in this fashion.

Fed up or not, their frustrations are fueled by a fake fire log, made of paper manufactured with distorted and venomous rhetoric, and a shortsighted and selfish, gender based desire that towers above the needs of our country.

If they continue, they like Clinton herself, will burn the very bridges to the coalitions thus power they need to make the changes they need.

For them not to realize, after this revealing campaign has spun itself out, that Gender has nothing to do with the ability to understand and care about issues that revolve around equality, is nothing short of a perfect example of the biased blindness that has created the very evil that they espouse to be against.

Yet another group being willingly manipulated by those who care nothing for their causes, proven by the their actions, past and present, is a sad and frustrating thing to witness.

I pray for Obama who has his work cut out for him.

you can say she's "fed up" if you want to, but she's pratically a "poster child" for the fatal flaw in hillary's core support- the notion that just because their candidate lost a large majority of the primaries and the other candidate has the delegate numbers, it's automatically "sexism" at work.

What's funny about a lot of these people screaming sexism is that, when you ask them to name specific things that obama has said in a speech or interview that are plainly sexist, all you hear is crickets. they can't name jack sh*t. they will try to make leaps with things like when obama brushed the "dirt" off his shoulder, but they can't come up with ANYTHING that obama has said or done in this campaign that can *clearly* be defined as sexist.

If you think this woman was just calmly expressing an opposing view and not a racist nutcase, you've got ISSUES.
