The Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee decision on Saturday to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations to the Democratic conventions with their voting strength cut in half is a major boost for Barack Obama, and a clear signal that the long and bitter fight for the nomination is on the verge of ending.

With the deck stacked against them, the Clinton forces may have had no choice but to abandon their demand that every Michigan and Florida delegate be seated with a full vote for each. In making the concession, the New York Senator not only settled for a net gain of just 26.5 delegate votes instead of 56, but gave up a crucial issue to take to the August convention in Denver.

"The Clinton campaign lost their biggest rationale for staying in the race," said California-based Democratic consultant Bill Carrick. "Any potential for Senator Clinton to pick up a large block of delegates is gone and the superdelegates will likely move to Senator Obama and end the race."

Jim Jordan, who managed John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid during its preliminary stages, was more explicit. "Even the Clinton folks acknowledged that this was their last gasp. So that's it. Time to turn to what matters, winning in November. And it's time for Senator Clinton herself to start salving the party's wounds."

Officially, the Clinton campaign declared that it was not giving up its right to appeal the decision of the Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) to the full convention over a relatively minor issue - four Michigan delegates given to Obama -- but, by accepting the resolution of the Florida seating issue without dissent, the campaign lost its strongest case.

Obama emerged from the RBC proceedings with a grand total of 2,052 delegates, just 66 short of the 2,118 required to win the nomination. Clinton has 1,877.5 delegates, 240.5 short of the number needed to win.

There are still three primaries to go -- in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana. Polling shows Clinton holding a double digit lead in Puerto Rico, while Obama holds a comparable lead in South Dakota and Montana. The three jurisdictions will send a total of 111 delegates to the convention, so that it is possible Obama could reach the magic 2,118 by the end of the day Tuesday, but he is likely to also need additional support from superdelegates who are free to make their own choice of a candidate.

Shortly after the RBC completed deliberations, Clinton's chief strategists on the committee, Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy, declared that they may still fight over four delegates from Michigan:

Today's results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party's nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party's convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.

We strongly object to the Committee's decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan's delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan. The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan's delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

A credentials fight over four delegates would be just a blip on the screen compared to what could have been a convention floor battle over the seating of 210 Florida and 156 Michigan delegates.

Robert Bauer, counsel to the Obama campaign, noted that the committee decision "does remove one obstacle. It is not clear she [Clinton] will see it that way."

Jonathan M. Prince, deputy manager of John Edwards' failed presidential bid, said "everything that's going on now is (and should be) about dignified closure....there's no good guy and no bad guy and it's in everyone's interest for both candidates to leave the field with their heads held high - one having run a historic race and winning, ready to unite the party and move on to the real fight, the other having run a historic race and almost winning."

Similarly, Robert Borosage, president of the Institute for America's Future and co-director of the Campaign for America's Future, said "This is all but over." He predicted a scenario of, "the Clintons accept the inevitable. The convention is unified. Hillary Clinton works harder than any other surrogate to elect the ticket."

"There is a new sheriff in town, [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi," said Democratic media specialist James Duffy. "In my mind she is driving the bus, and she will drive it right over the Clintons and if they miss the fact they got run over, she will back up and run over them again."

Politics is a sport. Anybody here got kids? Your kids play sports? Soccer, baseball, basketball, T-ball, volleyball, football? Do you want your kids to win by doing their best and playing by the rules? Do you want your kids to learn sportsmanship? I coached little league and soccer for nine years. One little league game had a time limit; you could not start a new inning after the time limit. We were behind by one run; there were 60 seconds left on the clock; the opposing team had been up to bat and we just got the third out. The opposing team started cheering their victory; they did not take the field. I told our player to get his bat and stand at the plate ready for a pitch. The opposing coach was NOT happy and he cursed at me and tried to intimidate me (I am a 5"2 1/2" woman, he was well over 6’); but the ump told them to take the field, and in the end we won. WE WON PLAYING BY THE RULES.

Then there was the Michigan “game”. Where is the sportsmanship of the Clinton campaign? They were just awarded a portion of the "runs" from a game that "didn't count" and the other "team" had no "at bats". Now, they call "foul" even though they got some of the score? Hello??? Sports-fans, what are we teaching our kids?

Contains:

"One of Mrs. Clinton’s chief strategists, Howard Wolfson, hinted that she was not inclined to carry the battle to the convention.

“Our focus is on securing the nomination for ourselves in the near term,” he said. “I don’t think anybody is looking toward the convention to end this process.”

Pure theater - he's saying that a candidate will soon be selected.

Negotiations to include Clintons's staff members in Obama's campaign are already in progress.

Ahem, look at the source. She's taking it to the convention. she will be seen as a quitter to 16 million people who voted for her. It will tarnish her rep (amongst her supporters and big donors) more than if she brought it to the convention.

we can't trust her near him, and he doesn't need her. So Hill/Billl should not think
they are going to beg their way on to his ticket.

I have never ever heard of men and women begging and trying to widdle for

that he would not be safe anywhere near her. These Clinton need to just go
away and take their staff with them.

A plain simple fact, any true Democrat that votes for McCain because Hillary didn't get her way with Florida and Michigan are nothing but traitors!

And emotionally immature. They are snapping off their noses to spite their faces. At least voting for Nader can be said to be backed by progressive principle, even if it is suicidal. Voting for McCain is suicidal without the progressive principle, just chidish spite.

Qualified for a pace maker matey! Qualifications are over rated. Hillary is qualified to continue the politics of privilege and access to special interest and to concocted a crap Hillary 2.0 universal (socialised) medical policy.

People thought Lincoln was qualified. Bush 43 certainly wasn't qualified and got elected twice...I understand he was governor of Texas which is ceremonial position at best. People said the same about Truman. It is a crap argument. The person with the most votes becomes qualified...instantly.

Sure.

Qualified to let Rove say horrid things about his child and stand by Bush after having a hit job done on his family.

Qualified to stand by and let the GOP swiftboat his supposed "good friend" John Kerry and degrade a fellow vet's military service.

Qualified to not vote against torture when the waterboarding bill came up, and also let Bush pass a signing statement to counter a bill banning torture a few years back.

Qualified to not even show up to vote against a GI Bill. Instead, his bill would re-create the Roman Legions, where you "might" get benefits if you serve for a couple decades.

Qualified? No thanks.

Dear Hillarytards:

If counting the votes of Florida and Michigan was so important, then why did the noble Harold Ickles and 13 Clinton supporters on the rules committee vote to strip them of their delegations in the first place? If making sure the voices of Michigan and Florida were so important, then why didn't Hillary attempt to resolve the situation before the primary. If Hillary thought the primary in Michigan was valid, then why wasn't she upfront and honest with the voters in New Hampshire (who saved her campaign) and tell them that the voices of Michigan should be heard and that is why she stayed on the ballot, instead of telling them that the Michigan results "don't count."

Of course, trying to reason with a Hillarytard is like trying to reason with a 1 year old with dirty diapers. As Donna Brazille says, "So I believe you're ready to not only destroy Roe versus Wade, voting rights, civil liberties and civil rights. Perhaps adding trillions more to the deficits through non-stop tax cuts to the wealthy and 100 more years in Iraq. Yes, please join Rush and McCain asap. The train has left. Catch it."

I agree. I left the Democratic Party and became an independent after no one would step forward to assist in bringing to a floor vote in the Senate Russ Feingold's motion to censure Bush over lying about the war in Iraq. If there was a Democratic version of Newt Gingrich running the house, Bush and Cheney would be facing impeachment now. While I disagree with virtually everything the Repugs stand for, I do have to respect that they have the balls to follow their convictions.

The bottom line--Hillary has the majority of the popular vote--a broader base of support--not just blacks and educated whites who feel guilty for past racial sins. (White guilt).
Her health plan is superior to BO's. BO talks about unity but his actions and his associates speak louder than his "Koolaid". If the Dems make the fatal mistake of nominating him, it's a guaranteed loss in Nov. He has less than 50% of support from Democratic voters. And Hillary supporters will NOT vote for him. I won't vote for McCain but will proudly write in Hillary in Nov. I could not stomach to vote for him. Obama and his Obamaloons will take the blame for the loss. As Kristen Breitweiser said, be sure you keep wearing your buttons and keep your bumper stickers on your cars so we know who to blame.

Hillary was a great wannabe male role model for all feminist interested in that type of non-gender. Hillary has testicular fortitude, she collected more cojones than she has space for. She's dranked her good Canadian Scotch, Crown Royal, and chased it with beer. She's had a fun time dodging sniper fire and shooting guns behind Pee Paws shack. Her arguments with Sillary and Hillary over which polyester mansuit she should wear is well known across the nation. She ran a greatterrible race and it is over.

Well one of the biggest problems with what you have said here is your premise is based on flawed data.

Hillary Clinton's claim is poppycock. It is based on cherry picked information. How can let's do a little thinking excercise. Puerto Rico should count but not the Am. Virgin Islands? Caucus States shouldn't count this time, but Bill Clinton damn sure counted them when he won them in 1992 and used them to announce his insurmountable lead over Gov. Ed Brown? The 30,000 + Write in Votes (over 20% of the total cast in Michigan) for Barack Obama shouldn't count from Michigan because their laws didn't allow them to be counted during the Primary?

Lastly, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE back-up these PHONY ASSED CLAIMS of sexism? GIVE ME SOME EVIDENCE! The only people I have heard bring up this bull is the rabid Hillary supporters. What because Geraldine Ferarro said it it is the TRUTH??? Give me some examples where Barack Obama has been anything but gracious regarding Hillary Clinton.

Well, I used to believe in the Democratic Party that elected Bill Clinton as President. Now I see a party that supports a woman and a black as their top candidates, has record turnouts, refused to allow Super Delegates to overturn the voice of the majority of Dems and held open and transparent hearings to work out a compromise on including MI and FL delegates even though they plainly broke the primary rules.

I am appalled.

As someone who shares all of Hillary's positions on the issues, protecting Roe v. Wade, stopping the war in Iraq, preventing war with Iran, providing universal health care, reversing tax cuts for the rich at the expense of lower and middle income Americans, stopping the corporate domination of our politics and society...I have no choice but to vote for McCain now.

How obviousely self serving can you get? The bending of truth, and ignoring of facts is getting on our nerves and we need to get on with the real election. As to Hillary having had the chance to have been a role model for girls, I don't think teaching them how to be a sore loser and attacking your opponent instead of standing on your own merit is gonna go over too well. But when winning is everything , I guess character, morals, and integrity can be exchanged for that. Sad for her.

And they're crying about the results. Obama has enough votes on the DNC RBC to stop ANY compromise, but instead he gave Hillary 20 delegates she had no right to claim. Then, Ickes complains about 4 she should have gotten.

They've lost their minds and don't know what reality is anymore. Now, they're touting in a new ad that they got the most popular votes. Sheesh.

I couldn't help but see these sad-sacks yesterday (like Ickes, Tina F and A. Huffman) looking so pained yesterday and think "um, YOU DID THIS!". To me the Clinton supporters on the Committee are so disingenious they should really lose their positions. Why? Because they voted for these states not to be counted in the FIRST place then when their horse wasn't winning they started pounding their chests in a 'mea culpa'. Like the honorable Donna Brazille's momma said "when you change the rules this late in the game, it's called cheating".

As for either candidate I felt in the beginning that both would be fine but have been appalled by Clintons' moral code. It personally offends me. But, I suppose she would be better after 8 years of Bush/Cheney. That's saying a lot about how bad their were.

Finally, yes! Obama is our candidate. Let's work to bring the fair and square nominee to the Oval Office.

It's about the rules. You know the rules Donna Brazille said they had to follow...oh, wait, no...she was talking about OTHER rules NOT the rules of the charter.

There are rules, and then there are principles. One of the primary democratic principles is to honor individuals' votes. The rules are silly and concocted situationally and signs of a losing party. Why should some states be able to go first? Why not let the states decide when they want to hold their primaries? Rules are rules, but none of them should thwart individual voters' rights to make their voices heard, whenever.

The thing that really bugs me about the Clintonian arguments on how the delegates should be allocated is this: ALL the other candidates at that time pledged not to campaign in those states, as did she, and her name was the only big name on the Michigan ballot. Why?? She didn't "win" anything at all, and you could easily argue that she should get less than she is now, based on how Obama was doing early on in the race (and Edwards, for that matter). It's not possible to accurately reflect the will of the voters so far after the fact, especially if the people they're voting for weren't even around, by mutual consent, to make the case for the presidency. I think she should button it, fold it up, and call it a day.
