The Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee decision on Saturday to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations to the Democratic conventions with their voting strength cut in half is a major boost for Barack Obama, and a clear signal that the long and bitter fight for the nomination is on the verge of ending.

With the deck stacked against them, the Clinton forces may have had no choice but to abandon their demand that every Michigan and Florida delegate be seated with a full vote for each. In making the concession, the New York Senator not only settled for a net gain of just 26.5 delegate votes instead of 56, but gave up a crucial issue to take to the August convention in Denver.

"The Clinton campaign lost their biggest rationale for staying in the race," said California-based Democratic consultant Bill Carrick. "Any potential for Senator Clinton to pick up a large block of delegates is gone and the superdelegates will likely move to Senator Obama and end the race."

Jim Jordan, who managed John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid during its preliminary stages, was more explicit. "Even the Clinton folks acknowledged that this was their last gasp. So that's it. Time to turn to what matters, winning in November. And it's time for Senator Clinton herself to start salving the party's wounds."

Officially, the Clinton campaign declared that it was not giving up its right to appeal the decision of the Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) to the full convention over a relatively minor issue - four Michigan delegates given to Obama -- but, by accepting the resolution of the Florida seating issue without dissent, the campaign lost its strongest case.

Obama emerged from the RBC proceedings with a grand total of 2,052 delegates, just 66 short of the 2,118 required to win the nomination. Clinton has 1,877.5 delegates, 240.5 short of the number needed to win.

There are still three primaries to go -- in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana. Polling shows Clinton holding a double digit lead in Puerto Rico, while Obama holds a comparable lead in South Dakota and Montana. The three jurisdictions will send a total of 111 delegates to the convention, so that it is possible Obama could reach the magic 2,118 by the end of the day Tuesday, but he is likely to also need additional support from superdelegates who are free to make their own choice of a candidate.

Shortly after the RBC completed deliberations, Clinton's chief strategists on the committee, Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy, declared that they may still fight over four delegates from Michigan:

Today's results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party's nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party's convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.
Story continues below

We strongly object to the Committee's decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan's delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan. The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan's delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

A credentials fight over four delegates would be just a blip on the screen compared to what could have been a convention floor battle over the seating of 210 Florida and 156 Michigan delegates.

Robert Bauer, counsel to the Obama campaign, noted that the committee decision "does remove one obstacle. It is not clear she [Clinton] will see it that way."

Jonathan M. Prince, deputy manager of John Edwards' failed presidential bid, said "everything that's going on now is (and should be) about dignified closure....there's no good guy and no bad guy and it's in everyone's interest for both candidates to leave the field with their heads held high - one having run a historic race and winning, ready to unite the party and move on to the real fight, the other having run a historic race and almost winning."

Similarly, Robert Borosage, president of the Institute for America's Future and co-director of the Campaign for America's Future, said "This is all but over." He predicted a scenario of, "the Clintons accept the inevitable. The convention is unified. Hillary Clinton works harder than any other surrogate to elect the ticket."

"There is a new sheriff in town, [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi," said Democratic media specialist James Duffy. "In my mind she is driving the bus, and she will drive it right over the Clintons and if they miss the fact they got run over, she will back up and run over them again."

It happens. Hillary and Bill fought the Republicans so hard and well, they became the Republicans.

I voted twice for two people that I no longer recognize.

Pulling back the curtain on the Democratic Party has revealed why the Party has stumbled so often over the last 35 years.

Study: Coverage of Clinton, Obama "Almost Identical"
Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy Examine Campaign Coverage
By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/29/2008 12:00:00 PM
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) did not get tougher press coverage than Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) when it came to the main themes about their character, history, leadership qualities and overall appeal

In fact, it was just the opposite starting after Clinton criticized the media for being too soft on Obama.
That's according to a new study from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism and Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy.
In fact, according to the study, for the first two months of the year, starting just before the Iowa caucuses, the tone of coverage for both was "almost identical," with both getting about twice as many positives in those categories as negatives.
The tougher coverage, the study said, came at Obama's expense as "the narrative about him began to turn more skeptical and indeed became more negative than the coverage of Clinton herself."

As a Michigan voter, I am insulted by Clinton's attempts to use our primary to cheat her way to the nomination. Our state's elected officials and the MDP leadership tried to "hijack" the primary for Clinton and they got called on it. Donna Brazile was right on when she inferred that Blanchard was cheating - his dubious role in the primary coupled with his role in misleading voters that it was Obama, not Clinton, who made the remarks to Canadian officials regarding NAFTA, are despicable to say the least. His inability to lead while he was governor also gave us eight years of John Engler - the sooner Blanchard disappears from Democratic politics the better for all of us.

The "centrist" politics of the Clintons all but destroyed the Democratic Party. People don't care about right, left, or center - they want truth and honesty from their elected officials. Not only should Pelosi drive the bus over the Clinton's, if necessary, she should take out a few of the Blue Dog Democrats at the same time. We need to move beyond divisive politics by presenting fresh ideas and new solutions.

Progressives, Liberals, Democrats, et. al., need to do all we can to inform, educate, and liberate those who've been tricked and deceived into voting against their own best interests for far too long.

I'm torn.

As an Obama supporter, I'm beginning to wonder if the campaign should continue to treat Clinton supporters with kid gloves?

The Clintons apparently are going to "do what they're going to do" - regardless of how hard we try to accomodate them?

Yesterday's outburst by Harold Ickes and the Clinton Faithful in the aftermath of the Rules Committee decision was (a) childish, (b) nasty and (c) a reflection of the ugly tone that has characterized their campaign since the very beginning.

We've got a primary campaign to wrap up and a general election to prepare for. We should no longer let the Clintons remain a distraction.

I'm not saying we should be dismissive or obnoxious toward the Clintons, but we're reaching a point where their are several other constituencies we need to reach out to who are as-equal-or more important than Clinton supporters - blue collar voters, seniors, rural communities (many of whom also back Clinton anyway).

It doesn't hurt to be nice, but if - in our zeal for "unity", we stop standing for what we believe in or get sucked into a bunch of game-playing, we'll be in danger of losing our soul while wasting valuable time better spent elsewhere.

To The Clinton Nation - The train is leaving the station. We'd love to have you and you're welcome to hop aboard if and when you are ready. But we're running out of time. We've got a campaign to run, and a candidate to get elected.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:30 PM on 06/01/2008

I understand and agree. I think this is the week of reckoning. Either Hillary concedes fully and gracefully and gets enthusiastically on board or she should be categorically BRANDED as a sore loser.

The DNC changed the rules to appease her (and MI and FL) and she will still lose. Failure to accept that outcome and continued chutzpah to attack the rules is unconscionable in a "LEADER."

He can't take the gloves off. It would be political suicide and is exactly what Clinton wants. If you think the race has been racially charged so far, imagine the scene the MSM would create:

Black man beats up on white woman.

In our country, only 50 years ago, black men were lynched for just looking at white women. You want to see some repressed racism surface, take the gloves off.

The Obama camp's patience and ability to stay civil is really impressive when you think how many times Clinton has tried to get him to bite.

You are 1,000% right. The HRC supporters are cursing out Obama just for calling a woman "sweetie". His only option is to be gracious. And that is why the Clintons hate him.

I made this same comment several weeks ago. Obama's surrounded by landmines. Black men are keenly aware of the suspicious climate surrounding their relationship to white women. He's already been called 'uppity', the last thing he needs now is to percieved as a black misogynist - or worse a ...I'll let you call it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:59 PM on 06/01/2008

I'm a little less tolerant of this foolishness. This must be stopped.

STOP coddling HRC and her vile minion. They only become emboldened with your weakness.

STOP waiting around for her to leave the race on her terms and with "dignity". She has no dignity and she'll never leave the race even if it means destroying the party's chances in November.

STOP being a co-dependant for despicable behavior because "she's a strong, intelligent woman".

STOP giving the benefit of the doubt when she makes ridiculous excuses for absurd lies.

STOP. Just stop this now. Write to every elected Democrat who represents you on every level. Tell them to apply pressure or you'll vote THEM out. Write to uncommitted super delegates- tell them they need to commit NOW. Contact every MSM outlet and demand that they give this as much attention as they gave Rev. Wright (in other words: 24/7 coverage for 2 months).

Enough is enough.

I've checked out the links you guys have posted, showing the reactions of Clinton supporters from yesterday. This is my perspective:

I don't think of these people as Loyal Democrats who got away, I think of them as Limbaugh Democrats that got out of the way.

To Hillary Supporters:
Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. - Voltaire

To Obama Supporters:
We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln

We have a job to do, let's stay focused on the things that we can control.

Peace!

I like it, poco, does it mean I conceded more than I gained, but I'm still ahead of the game?

Let me try it with the kids, LOL! BTW, I still say psyched, but I believe it's been replaced with "stoked"! LOL!

is meet the press live? bc it seemed like the mcclellan interview was extremely edited, every time he was speaking there was more to be said that wasn't - of course maybe that was bc russert read more quotes and showed more video than he gave mcclellan time to speak.

also, weren't the interviews of ickes and daschle quite different? he seemed to hammer daschle and not so much with ickes, he just let him get off with his lame answers.

i found the show to be much more of the same, and after last week's show, i guess i just expected more than i should have.

He confronted Iches a lot and I thought he tried to nail him ... Russert pointed out that Hillary was ready to declare victory in February and didn't care about MI and FL voters then. What are you going to do when Ickes says - that is true. He quoted Hillary saying the MI vote will not count. He confronted Iches by saying ( I have to paraphrase, sorry) In December you made me repeat after you that only the number of delegates counted, not the number of races, not the popular vote, only the delegates and now you are pointing to the popular votes ....

but its all about perception I guess

I think they tape the major interviews in advance (I think he probably did it Thursday or Friday. I know it plays in my EDT market at 11:00, but in others at 9:00EDT.

In a democracy, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. In a democracy, both the winning and losing sides have a right to their opinions, but afterward, the losing side has to accept the judgment of the majority. The Clinton side has every right to vent, and has every right to change sides. It is not the first time that would have happened. In a party as diverse as the Democratic party is, with as many factions, it is the case almost every election.

I think Democrats should chill out and think about the issues that made them vote or register Democratic in the first place. There are 20 weeks until the election, and if there are some who are too consumed with bitterness and cross over, that's their prerogative. There will, however, also be crossovers from the other direction, and I feel in this election the crossovers will largely negate each other. McCain has only gotten 75% of the votes in primaries after he clinched, and Ron Paul and Bob Barr will take more votes away from McCain than from Obama.

In a couple of weeks, people will see more soldiers come home in body bags, see the price of gas move toward $5 per gallon, see the price of food skyrocket further, more people will lose their jobs, more people will lose their homes to foreclosure, and come to their senses and the vast majority will vote their economic and philosophical interest.
