The Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee decision on Saturday to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations to the Democratic conventions with their voting strength cut in half is a major boost for Barack Obama, and a clear signal that the long and bitter fight for the nomination is on the verge of ending.

With the deck stacked against them, the Clinton forces may have had no choice but to abandon their demand that every Michigan and Florida delegate be seated with a full vote for each. In making the concession, the New York Senator not only settled for a net gain of just 26.5 delegate votes instead of 56, but gave up a crucial issue to take to the August convention in Denver.

"The Clinton campaign lost their biggest rationale for staying in the race," said California-based Democratic consultant Bill Carrick. "Any potential for Senator Clinton to pick up a large block of delegates is gone and the superdelegates will likely move to Senator Obama and end the race."

Jim Jordan, who managed John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid during its preliminary stages, was more explicit. "Even the Clinton folks acknowledged that this was their last gasp. So that's it. Time to turn to what matters, winning in November. And it's time for Senator Clinton herself to start salving the party's wounds."

Officially, the Clinton campaign declared that it was not giving up its right to appeal the decision of the Democratic Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) to the full convention over a relatively minor issue - four Michigan delegates given to Obama -- but, by accepting the resolution of the Florida seating issue without dissent, the campaign lost its strongest case.

Obama emerged from the RBC proceedings with a grand total of 2,052 delegates, just 66 short of the 2,118 required to win the nomination. Clinton has 1,877.5 delegates, 240.5 short of the number needed to win.

There are still three primaries to go -- in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana. Polling shows Clinton holding a double digit lead in Puerto Rico, while Obama holds a comparable lead in South Dakota and Montana. The three jurisdictions will send a total of 111 delegates to the convention, so that it is possible Obama could reach the magic 2,118 by the end of the day Tuesday, but he is likely to also need additional support from superdelegates who are free to make their own choice of a candidate.

Shortly after the RBC completed deliberations, Clinton's chief strategists on the committee, Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy, declared that they may still fight over four delegates from Michigan:

Today's results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party's nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party's convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.
Story continues below

We strongly object to the Committee's decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan's delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan. The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan's delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

A credentials fight over four delegates would be just a blip on the screen compared to what could have been a convention floor battle over the seating of 210 Florida and 156 Michigan delegates.

Robert Bauer, counsel to the Obama campaign, noted that the committee decision "does remove one obstacle. It is not clear she [Clinton] will see it that way."

Jonathan M. Prince, deputy manager of John Edwards' failed presidential bid, said "everything that's going on now is (and should be) about dignified closure....there's no good guy and no bad guy and it's in everyone's interest for both candidates to leave the field with their heads held high - one having run a historic race and winning, ready to unite the party and move on to the real fight, the other having run a historic race and almost winning."

Similarly, Robert Borosage, president of the Institute for America's Future and co-director of the Campaign for America's Future, said "This is all but over." He predicted a scenario of, "the Clintons accept the inevitable. The convention is unified. Hillary Clinton works harder than any other surrogate to elect the ticket."

"There is a new sheriff in town, [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi," said Democratic media specialist James Duffy. "In my mind she is driving the bus, and she will drive it right over the Clintons and if they miss the fact they got run over, she will back up and run over them again."

Gov. Rendell (PA) states (on Face the Nation) that he favors Hillary BUT: The debate will NOT go to the Convention and he WILL support Obama if he wins more delegates, putting the DP's interest ahead of you-know-who's.

Sen. Claire McKaskill eulogizes Obama, as expected.

I have to wonder if this is the first time in her life that Hillary is not going to get her way?

If you leave out her relationship with Bill, the answer is likely to be "yes."

Man Russert just likes trying to maintain the company and the Clintons talking points. He is always such a hack.

Russert can barely read. He always makes mistakes when he reads the quotes they put up on screen.

He sometimes surprises me though. I think he tries to take the same hard line with both sides - but he sometimes goes too far. Like today he felt he needed to show the entire Flager video in order to discuss it with Daschle (is that who he had on?). He also read back to Ickes a statement that he made to Tim at the beginning of the Primary saying that the delegate count is what will determine who the nominee is not the popular vote.

Riddle me this. Hillary and her supporters will use the results of the Puerto Rico primary as evidence of her electability.

Minor problem. While Puerto Rico is allowed to conduct a primary, they are not allowed to vote in the General Election.

Since PR lacks statehood, many of it's residents aren't US citizens - but many are (I made calls there for the BO campaign).

ALL native Puerto Ricans are US citizens, because PR is a US territory, and the same is tru for Guam, the US V.I., and other territories.

Then have the primary included within the one for Democrats Abroad.

No reason to let people unqualified to vote in the General vote in a primary.

You know I'm more curious how many officials have been paid off by the Clinton's down in PR since that seems to be the trend lately with them.

When Obama loses in NOv it will be due to the way his supporters have insulted and demeaned so many groups. OLder folks, white folks, blacks who are not Obama supporters, Hispanics, folks without a college education, and others. It appears Obama is on the verge of doing two things. Selling out the Florida Democrats to the GOP and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

We, even Hillary Clinton, were taught the following by our parents and our church leaders:

The ethic of reciprocity or the Golden Rule is a fundamental moral value which simply means "treat others as you would like to be treated." It is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights, though it is not without its critics.

Cheating is an act of lying, deception, fraud, trickery, imposture, or imposition. Cheating characteristically is employed to create an unfair advantage, usually in one's own interest, and often at the expense of others. Cheating implies the breaking of rules. The term "cheating" is less applicable to the breaking of laws, as illegal activities are referred to by specific legal terminology such as fraud or corruption. Cheating is a primordial economic act: getting more for less, often used when referring to marital infidelity.

Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

When Hillary says she's a "fighter" she's not kidding. That's what she's about - fighting. Not fighting for us, as she likes to say -- she just likes a good FIGHT. Taking this Florida/Michigan issue to the convention is just more needless fighting. It's time for the Clinton's to come back to reality. Numbers don't lie - well, unless you are the Clinton's in which case numbers do what ever you tell them to - but in the real world - it's about the delegates -- not some pseudo math regarding popular vote -- it's about the delegates! And Hillary does not have them. That's it. End of story. Hang up the pants suit already. She's accomplished a lot, but the nomination is going to Obama. So -- it would be so much better if she could go out w/ dignity and grace - rather than scratching and clawing.

The concern is that the racism, bigotry, and lies that Ickes, Hillary, Bill, Terry, and others have played with might cause a split in the party that can not be resolved. If this happens, Hillary deserves to bare the results of her actions.

I think Hillary's group is shrinking and what we see left is the more irrational and ignorant (believe her lies).

Her group of supporters is shrinking, but getting louder. They still get only 1 vote each.

One thing that is clear, or should be clear to everyone, is that the Clintons have become power crazy. Between Hillary’s neo-bizarro campaign of crypto-hate and Bill’s too active craving for money and attention we have crossed the line into a new realm of political weirdness. After watching the RBC meeting yesterday unfold as “Hillary’s Last Stand” the Sioux Indian Democrats mounted an attack and stopped the Clintons in their tracks. Ickes and friends never had a chance. Hubris croaked Custer and in a similar way dealt with Hillary’s wheels off traveling medicine show. Clintonism has run its course like bout of mononucleosis. The nation could not suffer another dose of the Clintons and the DC insiders understood this. The public reaction to Obama is at least partly due to the spoken and unspoken fear that if Hillary had managed to gain the Presidency her husband would have been unleashed upon the planet like Godzilla. The time came to call out the fighter planes and drive these two creatures back to Monster Island. We the people have not had much luck at picking President lately. The two dynasties in play have given us disaster heaped upon disaster. Let us all hope that the Obama campaign’s ability to excite the electorate into participation will allow for a return to something like sanity and reason. Obama must reach out, beyond Clintonism, and find a suitable VP. Billary is not an option.

What held up was the DNC's willingness to allow the Florida GOP to dictate the value of votes cast in the state primary. A sell out to the GOP is not my idea of a good result, but Obama seems to be happy with that course of action.

What Phoney and CNN and MSNBC talking heads don't have the backbone to call her and her people on it.

Harold Ickes and Scott McClellan on Meet the Press this morning remind me of the character, Grima Wormtongue, in the Lord of the Rings. Those of you who have read the book or seen the movie know what I am talking about. These two sniveling, witless, weasels represent everything that is wrong with our government. These are the spineless advisors that our leaders surround themselves with?

I haven't turned on the news yet this a.m. But I thought this thread would be very quiet, since the MI / FL issue was RESOLVED yesterday, and seemed both reasonable and fair.

How can this thread possibly be true? How can Clinton (via her supporters and surrogates) still be acting in such a graceless, sour, divisive manner?

And Ickes is still having a tantrum over FOUR delegates! Still whining about Michigan? Still falsely claiming that Obama's removing his name from the ballot was was strategic (when it appears that Hillary's decision to leave hers on was the "strategic" one--her deceitful "ace in the hole" despite her promises and pledge)?

And this is getting airtime? And the divisiveness is still being whipped up? Why? Hillary & Co must have a self-serving game plan in all this (since, as everyone knows, she's LOST the nomination).

What could it be? Money from donors somehow? McCain Cabinet position? Sheer petty vindictiveness as payback that Obama even is more beloved by superdelegates than the Clintons (who are still feared, but not feared ENOUGH)? At least she's clearly not angling for VP.

What's her game?

Who knows at this point? Disappointment and disbelief that a nomination that seemed sewn up at the beginning of the year is not going to happen? Realization that she is millions of dollars in debt? Remember that McAuliffe, Ickles, et al, are not relevant if they lose this fight...their place in the sun is gone, and they desperately want that place again. Instead, they are going to contribute to damning America to another 4, 8 or 20 years of Republican rule in a year when the Democrats should be able to win easily. All for personal gain.
