Lanny

A brief but spittle-filled shouting match broke out in the halls of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee hearing on Saturday between a committee member and a surrogate for Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Lanny Davis, the colorful, committed, and sometimes unrestrained Clinton supporter deliberately interrupted a small gathering of press who had come to hear Jon Ausman, a DNC member, explain the basis of his proposed Florida delegation compromise.

"I'll tell you what," Davis chimed in, "the Clinton campaign's position has been misrepresented by this wonderful love-fest, and the lady who testified for us was saying that the Obama campaign and your proposal is not generous. But it is in fact unfair. If you want to hear, now that the love-fest is over, why don't you come over and hear the counterpoint to this completely disingenuous argument."

A befuddled Ausman who had earlier proposed that Florida's 185 pledged delegates be subject to a 50 percent penalty, asked who exactly Lanny Davis was. By then, however, Davis had herded a slew of reporters around Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, another Clinton supporter, who was standing feet away and insisting that Ausman's deal was far from a "generous" token by the Obama campaign. Then, in the midst of the hastily gathered question and answer session, Ausman reemerged to defend himself.

What proceeded was a heated and, at times, unintentionally hilarious exchange, with the two standing inches apart from each other and the occasional finger pointed in the other's face.

Ausman: [My proposal] is very generous, because Obama was initially fighting for a situation where Clinton would net 6 delegates, now it's 19.

Davis: Don't say you're being generous.

Ausman: I can say we're being generous.

Davis: But you're allowed to and I'm allowed to disagree...

Story continues below

Ausman: But I'm the one who's on the petition...

Reporter: Ok ok, why don't we --

Ausman: Are you a representative of Clinton?

Davis: No, I'm actually just a person...

Ausman: Are you a designated representative of Clinton?

Davis: I am not a designated representative.

Ausman: Then why don't we have a designated representative speak for Clinton and you be silent?

After the fracas ended, Tubbs Jones fielded several additional questions. Arguing that the only "fair" outcome in Florida would be for the full seating of the delegation and not for those delegates to be halved, she deflected questions as to whether the Clinton campaign's proposals were, themselves, uncompromising.

"My name is Stephanie Tubbs Jones and I am the congresswoman from the great state of Ohio, and on behalf of the Clinton campaign, we don't expect that the Obama campaign could be so generous to us to give us these 19 delegates. It is in fact more generous, and more appropriate, that all the votes be counted as they were cast. And if the votes are counted as they were cast, Senator Clinton will get much more than the Obama campaign is saying will be generous."

Within minutes the congresswoman and the press had dispersed. But a heated Davis was still strolling the halls of the Marriot Hotel. Talking to a separate reporter, he acknowledged that even if Clinton were to get everything she wanted, the likelihood remained that she would still lose the nomination.

"They can give us the full 38 delegates [the net gain of counting 100 percent of the vote] and still win," he said. "So why won't they."

Asked about the exchange with Ausman, he said: "I'm f-ing angry."

Lanny Davis is just another reason not to support Hillary Clinton. What an idiot.... I am tired of the bullying of this campaign. Needless to say, I still cannot figure out how anyone supporting Hillary can claim that she deserves all the Michigan votes she won and no one else would deserve any when they all agreed Michigan would not count, and they all agreed to take their name off the ballot. Oops, I didn't make the cut, so now give me the delegates.... I am so sick of this I probably won't even vote in November. Maybe I will move to Canada or somewhere else where they recognize that people deserve Health Care, Unilateral engagement into unnecessary wars kills economies as well as soldiers, Tax breaks to rich break the country, and education is not political. Do we need a change in this country. Four more years of Bush mentality from either McCain or Clinton will just make me ill...

Jay, I hope you don't seriously mean you might not vote. The one thing that we all must do is work to get the democratic candidate elected. Realize that the yelling and screaming from the Hillary camp will die down (it won't go away, there will always be a few radicals) after she concedes and asks her supporters to back Obama, which she will have to do to remain viable in the Democratic Party.

Whooohooo! thanks for this backstage insight! love to watch Lanny try to keep his passive-agressive cool! He always starts out calm & then when others disagree - he starts & eventually he can't help but show his true entitled anger - it's classic Clintonista.

Have you noticed that Senator Obama's supporters tend to be much more kind & thoughtful?

That post-menopausal ruckus at the Sat. DNC meeting was shameful. Silly women running around in t-shirts & sunglasses, railing at the ceiling & spouting off nonsense in support of Hillary....bet she was proud ....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:34 PM on 06/02/2008

As far as Obama's campaign staff, I know they are certainly more kind and thoughtful (and I like to think we supporters are two, but I'm sure there are a few bad apples in every bunch...) . From what I understand, Obama's ground rule when hiring campagin staff was "no drama." I'd say that is a pretty wise strategy.

I agree with this post. As someone who would have gladly supported Senator Clinton if she had won the nomination, I'm stunned at the arrogance and ineptitude of some of the "best and brightest" on her team, including Davis. I've been involved in Democratic politics since volunteering for RFK in 1968 and worked for a Democratic governor as an executive assistant. In that capacity, I always looked up to people like Lanny Davis. Having said that, instead of acknowledging that Axelrod et al outsmarted them and that they blew it by thinking the nomination was locked up and not competing with Obama in the caucuses, they have used ad hominem attacks and "fuzzy math" to defend the indefensible. It's time to shut the barn door because the horse has left the barn and Obama's riding it, not Hillary.

Bullying like Richardson sayiing Obama will remember those who didn't endorse him prior to Tuesday? Or Jesse Jackson Jr. calling black Supers and telling they better support the black candidate or fear the wrath come election time?

Must've been asleep - seen none of that Bill. Please post link, cause I've yet to see 13% of ANYTHING have real influence, or import, on a grand scale. Think Rev. Jackson, and Gov. Richardson adept enough to know this. Besides the fact that part of that 13%, though misguided as they are, are in Lon Chaneys, uh I mean Sen. Clintons camp. Never thought I'd see a time when genders switched roles - the Senator, and her ladies are fighting like they have BIG COJONES - the men are sounding more like bad menstrual cycles. Either way I can't think of a clearer reason we lost 04'. No respect for clear fabricators, and they are lawmakers and lawyers.......hummmm.

I was gonna say I don't remember Richardson saying such a thing, but after thinking about it, I do recall some tv pundits discussing this. But my memory of it was that Richardson will remember those who DID endorse him prior to Tuesday, which is a lot different. But if you want to argue this point, by all means - show us the evidence.

Gov. Rendell is coming around to Obama, so of course, Mayor Nutter will follow suit. They will rally around whoever is the nominee. If it is Hillary, the politicians who supported Obama would come around to Hillary. Most democrats will want to rally their base and support the nominee for a Democratic win in November. 4 more years of republicans in office is only good for the republicans.

Jenny, just a reminder that we are going to need those Clinton people to win the general election. Very few of them are horrible, but they are terribly frustrated. Lets welcome those that throw their support to Obama when all this is done and try not to alienate them with our language in the mean time.

"Need" Clinton supporters?. The only need here is this: Clinton supporters need to decide is if they support Senator Clinton because of the Democratic policies and positions she has championed for 35 years have any meaning or value, or not. Hillary Clinton became a Democrat because it means something to be a Democrat. She remains a proud and loyal Democrat. Democrats fight. Then we unite. I didn't support President Clinton's actions with Monica Lewinsky, it is an anathema to everything I believe in as a feminist, but I stood by Bill Clinton because I believed the alternative - Republican control of the Presidency through impeachment was far far worse. I believed that Bill Clinton, for all his flaws, was a better President than the Bush before him, and the Bush after him. And if Clinton supporters don't see a difference between Senator McCain (unlike Clinton & Obama wants to continue Bush Iraq policies, unlike Clinton & Obama opposes Choice, unlike Clinton & Obama opposes universal health care, unlike Clinton & Obama opposes supporting veterans with the new GI Bill.)

If Clinton supporters are going to vote for McCain in spite of his vast differences with Senators Clinton and Obama, then they were never true supporters of the good Democratic Senator from New York in the first place. They dishonor and demean her 35 years of hard work for the public good, for a single moment of spite if they vote for a 3rd term of George W Bush. .

I understand your sentiment JennyJay but you know as well as I that we are going to need Clinton's supporters to win the general election. Hillary will eventually ask her supporters to vote for Obama; she has to to have a future in the Democratic Party. In the mean time, we've won - so we should be trying to avoid further alienating the Hillary supporters.

IF the Hillary "supporters" prefer to be onery, if they figure that is in THEIR OWN BEST INTEREST to either abstain or vote for McC...LET THEM and if that allows McC to win the WH, THEY will get the results they deserve !!! If they are SOooooooooo MYOPIC and figure they have been done so wrong, that they fail to recognize that in ACTUALITY Obama and Clinton are so close on MOST issues, that given that fact and with the BONUS that Obama DID SHOW THE CORRECT JUDGEMENT IN REGARDS TO IRAQ FROM THE GIT-GO and DID NOT JUST VOTE TO GO ALONG TO GET ALONG AND BE POLITICALLY EXPEDIENT TO POSITION for campaing purposes(face it, MOST allowed themselves to vote in accord with that resoplution figuring it would be a SHORT war interaction and too afraind of being called whimpy in regard to national security issues, they figured they needed that on record and IT BACKFIRED BIGTIME !!! ) Work to elect Obama or suffer the consequences and have nose-less faces forevermore!!!

As someone from New York, I disagree. Her senatorial career from the beginning has been about positioning herself to run for president. I wouldn't be surprised if she ditched politics to clean up in the private sector. For Hillary, "public service" was never about the public.

Keep saying that, cause you won't be saying it for much longer. Her district in Ohio includes Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) which heavily favors Obama. Her rediculous rants and whining on TV will most likely end her career. I'm sure there will be someone challenging her after all of that.

Unity and coming together in the Clinton Corner is when it comes together on her behalf.

She is the one who has reneged on the agreed rules by the All the former candidates for Michigan and Florida.Obama was not the only candidate whose name was left off the ballot . Other candidates also did this.

She said back in January that the nomination would be rapped up by February. Yet, she keeps moving the goal post on her behalf for that nomination.

Hilary has slowly been showing what her real ambitions are for the nation over uniting any democrats. It looks like she is headed for a full blown public self-destruct course.

As an Obama supporter I agree with jrterrier... I say it is time to LOOSE THE VITRIOL.

I once thought of Hillary as a perfectly acceptable second choice, but her actions (or the actions of her supporters) over the last few months have not helped her image with me. Nonetheless, I understand how many of her supporters must feel very disappointed. Now that Barack is on the verge of clinching the nomination it is time to heal the wounds of this nominating contest.

If you support Barack, take a lesson from the man you support. He is not badmouthing Hillary or her supporters. When Hillary’s supporters converge on the DNC RBC meeting to protest, Barack says keep your cool, stay home, put your effort into building a good local grass-roots organization for the general election.

We need to remind Hillary’s supporters that we all share the same goals!!! We must unite in order to ensure that we don’t end up with yet another 4 years of the regressive policies that are destroying America and squashing all but the very richest among us.

real unity or Clinton's definition of unity? She has gotten more chances to change her narrative and move the goalposts then any other candidate in recent history. It seems as if the only scenario that is unifying for Clinton and her supporters is the one that gives them the nomination. I do not know why anyone bothered to run against her at that rate.

It goes that way because OBAMA WILL BE THE NOMINEE UNDER ALL THE METRICS THAT COUNT IN THIS PRIMARY. He didn't cheat or steal to get where he is. His campaign won against hers - it was better run and did not mentally stop in February because it believed it would wrap it up.

Unity includes mutual respect and when something comes out of her mouth that is close to respect and not another way to undermine his campaign and its amazing work, then you can lecture us about that.

But Tubbs Jones will try to change her position and support Obama.
The voters though will remember the fact that she stood for the status quo and for the old guard.
I do hope someone challenges her seat. It would be a great political fight. And I wonder if Obama would back the challenger instead of her.

It's one thing to support Hillary, those people are to be supported when they turn to Obama. However it quite different to go through the gauntlet for Clinton the way that Tubbs Jones has. Tubbs Jones may indeed pay a political price for her shenanigans. Personally I hope she does.

I guess, it was what it was suspected to be all along. She wasn't fighting for the states. She was fighting for herself.

this is how the entitled class reacts to losing what they feel is rightfully theirs- when The Universe does not cooperate with their plans.

Bill Clinton's reaction here is very similar.
