SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — It's Barack Obama's party now. He beat the ultimate insider at the insider's game. And he's already turned his full-bore attention to the general election contest against Republican John McCain.

During a weekend in which Hillary Rodham Clinton mounted a likely last hurrah in Puerto Rico and national Democrats resolved the sticky issue of seating Florida and Michigan delegates under a formula favorable to Obama, the Illinois senator took a series of bold steps to signal his focus was riveted on the fall campaign:

_ He severed all remaining ties with his Chicago church and politically meddlesome pastors who have preached from its pulpit.

_ His campaign announced he would go to the lion's den, the site of this summer's GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., for a rally this Tuesday marking the end of the primary season.

_ He stepped up his criticism of McCain, pummeling him on Iraq, Iran and veterans matters.

Former Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle, Obama's top supporter here in South Dakota and leader of the effort to round up superdelegates, on Sunday predicted the floodgates would open this week as remaining superdelegates jump on the Obama bandwagon.

"I think we're going to have a nominee before the end of this week," Daschle said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The primary season ends Tuesday, with contests here and in Montana. Obama was spending Sunday, and all of Saturday, campaigning here.

Obama's complete break with Trinity United Church of Christ will provide a degree of cover for superdelegates poised to endorse him but possibly still uncomfortable about some of his entanglements.

And the same things that make it easier for Obama to cement his victory among superdelegates will help him coax independents to swing his way in the fall.

Obama hasn't yet declared that his nomination is inevitable. But he's on the very edge.

"We are getting very close to the number, the new number, now that Michigan and Florida have been added," he told reporters traveling with him.

"We are getting close to the number that will give us the nomination. And if we've hit that number on Tuesday night we will announce that _ and I think even if we don't, this is the end of the primary season," he said. Thus the in-your face decision to hold Tuesday night's primary season wrap-up rally at the Xcel Energy Center, site of the GOP convention beginning Sept. 1.

"I think it's very important for us to pivot and focus on the clear contrast that will exist between Democrats and Republicans in this election," Obama said.

Contributing to the dynamic as Obama heads toward the general election is that he has been painted so poorly by the Clinton campaign _ from first portraying him as another manifestation of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson to suggesting her rival could be in the same line as other Democratic nominees who lost badly, including George McGovern, the 1972 candidate defeated by President Nixon in a landslide.

Clinton once worked for McGovern's candidacy. McGovern, also of South Dakota, earlier supported Clinton but switched his allegiance to Obama in May and urged her to drop out of the race. He described Obama's lead as "insurmountable" and argued "Democrats need to be gathering in a united way behind him."

Despite continued defiant assertions by Clinton that she would be a better candidate against McCain, particularly in industrial swing states, even some of her most ardent supporters are now subdued, perhaps resigned to the inevitability of an Obama candidacy.

"He would make a good president, and we're not saying he can't get elected," top Clinton strategist Harold Ickes said Sunday.

Clearly, there are some big general election challenges ahead for Obama.

"Obama has to deal with the issue of white working-class reservations about him, highly social conservative attitudes," said Andrew Kohut, president of the independent Pew Research Center.

In many ways, Obama's resignation from the church and repudiation of ministers who made inflammatory racial comments from its pulpit should help with this group.

But more important, said Kohut, Obama needs to strongly reach out to independents. "Right now, they're breaking for Obama. All elections are about how independent voters break."

Plus, Obama is the first one to acknowledge that things happen, and that in a YouTube world, anything can rear up instantly and come close to destroying your political career _ like the sermons of two preachers who are among his longtime acquaintances and supporters.

Remarks by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, inflamed racial tensions. These were reinforced by recent comments from the same pulpit by a visiting pastor, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, that raised racial issues and mocked Clinton. Clips of both were circulated extensively on YouTube and shown on television.

"I have to say this was one I didn't see coming. We knew there were going to be some things we didn't see coming. This was one," Obama said. "I didn't anticipate my fairly conventional Christian faith being subject to such challenge and such scrutiny. Initially with e-mails suggesting I was a Muslim, later with the controversy that Trinity generated."

I don't suffer from "abused woman syndrome" with nowhere to go. DNC has this wrong. This time, I have the strength to leave this relationship and not vote for "Donald Duck" as I have for the past 2 times. Hillary has won more votes and Obama has stolen the nomination by stealing the caucuses. I, for one, will not reward a cheater with my vote, I don't care if Hillary tells me to vote for him; this is bigger than Hillary! I am sick of DNC producing an out of touch, elite, loser every 4 years and will write her in (I already have asked for absentee ballot, so I can do that).

Hillary Clinton does Not have any reason to concede the contest for Dem Candidate for President of The United States of America. In my opinion, we are seeing an attempt to unfairly influence the voters of the Great States of Montana and South Dakota. I have faith in these good folks, Living in God's Country so to speak, to not be hoodwinked into not voting. In my opinion, as well as others, Hillary Clinton is the only Electable Democrat to win the election in November. Hillary is still in the running folks, and will protect our Democracy & The American People. Hillary Clinton has allot of Heart and will be a champion of both The American People and Liberty. This is why our country is so great, our people and liberty. That's why so many around the world wish they were living here. Hillary will also be a tough representative when dealing with governments overseas. Hillary is no pushover! She will make a wonderful President of our Democracy, and more importantly, she will keep our great nation just that, a Democracy

its amazing that 2 candidates so similar, policywise, have supporters behaving with such antagonism towards each other.

i only hope now clinton can do the right thing. which is to energetically throw herself behind the nominee, and explain to her supporters why they should too.

to her supporters who cant now pull the lever for Obama, a candidate so similar on policy, i would love to know why. i hear some of them, like Ferraro, and they seem unhinged. she's projecting all her frustrations onto Obama, who did nothing wrong, and in fact did little to attack clinton.

time to look at the the Democratic nominee with some fresh eyes.

I wonder if the fact that they were so similar on policy positions actually invited people to make choices based upon personality, gender, etc.... and maybe excerbated the situation because once you point out the tiny differences there is nothing left to say and the 24 news stations had to fill up air time with something. I also blame Hillary for egging on the division.

The point that you believe that there policies are similar is really amazing.....that is a media lie.

Hillary is part oft he DLC republican lite part of the party. They support the war in Iraq and believe that Liberals are the problem with the party. They are financed by corporate fat cats and once in office pander to Wall Street to get re-elected.

Obama is part of the Progressive wing of the party. He is a liberal with a capital L - libertarian.

So don't get lost in the hype.

You are right; in a way… here is the difference:

Obama’s policies are the same old commie-lunatic-ideas in a new messianic doctrine called “yes we can”; well if this is what you call progressive, then I strongly urge you to stop smoking dope! lol.

Hillary’s policies are the traditional collective-bargaining, labor-oriented, national security, non-anti-capitalist party. This is the basis all good democrats ran in the past including JFK.

How about this: instead of hijacking our party why don’t you guys have the spine to create a new party, say the National Communist Party, and leave the DNC title to us?

The one thing Sen. Obama has done in his candidacy for President is to prove that an African-American can be as corrupted and compromised as any white politician. The Democratic Party 'bosses' chose to push Sen. Obama because of the loyalty of the African-American support of the party without fully considering that his African-American heritage does not automatically make him the wise and resourceful person he must be to gain ALL the Democratic Party's support for this unique election! The sophomoric and fanatic emotional base of young voters (who have NO sense of serious politics) jumped on the Obama bandwagon with flags waving and horns blaring, BUT, afer Goerge W. BUSHWHACKER, the nation ISN'T BUYING BLATHER AND BRAVADO AND 'PIE IN THE SKY' platitudes ANYMORE- regardless of who says it!

The Denogratic Party bosses may have picked their 'lackey' but the American people are the ones who vote!

The good thing from this could be that NOW both Republican and Democratic politicians will be left aside while Americans look seriously at leaders with conscience, character and commitment to our U.S. Constitution which would mean: A BRAND NEW PARTY BASED UPON THE PRINCIPLES OF THE US CONSTITUTION THAT HAS BROUGHT US THROUGH THESE CENTURIES AND WOULD INSURE OUR GRANDCHILDREN OF A SECURE FUTURE FOR THE NEXT CENTURIES!

Why elect politicians when there are people of character and clarity who needs to reflect to the global community:
Bill Moyers comes to mind!
Tom Hanks?
President of BET Television?

I can't think of anyone available with more clarity and character than Obama. Intellectual, honest, generous, humble at times--tough when necessary.

Tom Hanks? You must be kidding.

Is what we need, and this is when we need him. We can win without the racists, just like Clinton would have had to win without the sexists. (At least we'll have the ageists this time around.)

Zeje,

You already blaming the Clintons for a possible OBAMA loss this fall in the general? If he's so great he'll unite the party, the Clintons won't obstruct. HE HAS PLENTY OF TIME TO DO IT. Stop blaming the Clinton's for everything, its a joke already, They both fought hard as they should have in this primary. If Obama loses the fall election it will be his own fault. And anybody with half a brain in the Democratic party (including the ones that count--the actual voters & not the DNC bigwigs) will view it that way, just like they viewed Kerry's loss. One thing for sure, is that the Clinton's are not stupid, no matter how the Obamanites feel about them. They won't allow the jerks that trashed them to trash them for a possible Obama loss. Don't be ridiculous. If you actually think he's the strongest candidate to go against Mccain then you wouldn't post such BS today.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:06 PM on 06/02/2008

On the contrary--we KNOW he's the strongest candidate against McCain. But we know this is a conservative country, and we know the dangerous way the Clintons used racial dog-whistle politics, AND labeled Obama as an elitist, and all the other nastiness can't help but hurt Obama in the fall.

We don't know yet who will win, or why--but we do know the Clintons have a lot to atone for.

Zeje,

Anyway, it just sounds like you are scared and making excuses for OBMAMA before the actual general election starts--It's your 'tell'. That's weak thinking Zeje. Clinton supporters will back him, maybe not all of them, but most will because Hillary will rally them to the Democratic cause. The Clinton's have been fighting for the principles of this party for their entire adult lifetimes. They've dedicated themselves to this party; even though some party elders have turned against them more than once for their own corrupt political reasons. So, easy for you all to forget that he was the only 2 term Democratic President since FDR. She got over 17-million votes, if they weren't so popular still with Americans, Hill wouldn't have done so well. SO try to mind your manners finally about the Clinton's in this forum. Its been really disturbing to read all the personal attacks against them, and not the actual facts. Get a life. I'll wind up voting for him, I don't trust him, but I want a DEM in the Whitehouse. But, anymore slams against the Clinton's that I read in this forum or in the MSM by Obama surrogates, I might actually abstain from voting for the 1st time in my life.

Obama's's already kissing her ass in every speech he's giving in the last 2 weeks. Wonder why? He needs those 17 million plus votes to back him in the fall against Mccain. Don't be a moron. Republicans will never vote Obama in the fall. Most that voted were fluke votes and will not be sustained, you see unlike this lame party, Republicans stick together in the end. We haven't figured how to do it yet, maybe your guy Obama will, he has too at this point or he loses. Get it.

You have a choice to make now: Keep being polarizing or join with the dems to defeat McCain. Yes, Hillary supporters need time to mourn the loss and heal, but at some point everyone has to sacrifice for the greater good. I will tell you that I am no fan of Hillary, but if she had been the nominee, I would have put my feelings aside and voted for her in a heartbeat. McCain is a disaster. As for the nice things Obama is saying about Hillary, what do you want him to say? Nothing? Mean Things? He is trying to unify the party. That is the job of the nominee. If Hillary were the nominee, she would be obligated to praise Obama. That is the way it works. I wonder if you are still searching for an excuse to blame Obama for winning. That is not fair, that is being a sore loser. Delegates elect a nominee. I don't have time or space to explain the reason why the "popular" vote claim is fatally flawed (such as not counting the caucases and unfairly weighing states that have primaries etc...). It no longer matters at this point. It is time to move on. Vent if you need to, but then move on.

All you hurt Clinton supporters:

Direct your rage to Republicans. They are the ones who have screwed up the nation. Direct your rage to the failed strategies of the Clinton campaign. Don't vote against your economic interests out of spite. If you do, you risk handing the election to McWar. If you somehow think that will justify your anger, you'll wish you had made a different decision when McWar turns out to be even more corrupt and less effective (is that possible) than Bush.

Barack will still have the love and affection of the democratic party. YOU will be broke and suffering from McWar's policies.

But if 250,000 Clinton supporters decide they can't find it in their hearts to vote for the candidate that mirrors Clinton more than any other, I pray that more republicans defect to vote for Obama.

I pray the following people come out in masse on election day to defeat the Clinton machine:

1. Disillusioned Republicans (Obamacans)
2. Independents//Moderates
3. African Americans
4. Latinos
5. Jews
6. Whites who don't mind being called elitists, liberals and activists
7. Former Edwards, Richardson, & Clinton supporters
8. New Voters Aged 18 & up
9. Asians
10. Those Republicans that wanted Ron Paul but will take Obama instead

Those groups could counter the frustrated, hateful, spiteful, sore loser Clinton voters.

What the Democratic Primary has shown us is:
1. How little we know about each other's culture.
2. Despite #1 we want to unite and have our voice heard as one people, not interpreted (by politics) or assumed (by politicians).
3. The general public is smarter than we are given credit by politicians and the media.
4. Although Obama is not as experienced or formalized with Washington, the majority of the public feels he has "it".
5. America is ready to turn the page and retake it's role as the leader of the free world.
There is a lot of hating out there. We need to begin the healing process and build momentum towards defeating McCain. To those who say you're not going to vote for Obama.............. You probably have some personal demons you need to get rid of. The man won fair and square!

The Clinton campaign decided early on that 'caucuses were not their thing' then spun the lie that caucuses are not democratic. Sorry, but I attended a caucus and it felt pretty darn democratic to me, as well as to my wife and daughter, who also attended and voted for our candidate.

My God, Micca is acting like Sean on fox news. Someone need to tell her their is a difference between a pastor and visting preacher. Obama denounce the remarks, members dont denounce a church. I am glad he left because you people(media) need to leave the church alone. AND WHILE YOU MAY NEVER ADMIT IT, THE PREACHER WAS TELLING THE TRUTH. But, obama is about bringing this country together.
