I Like ItI Don’t Like It

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — It's Barack Obama's party now. He beat the ultimate insider at the insider's game. And he's already turned his full-bore attention to the general election contest against Republican John McCain.

During a weekend in which Hillary Rodham Clinton mounted a likely last hurrah in Puerto Rico and national Democrats resolved the sticky issue of seating Florida and Michigan delegates under a formula favorable to Obama, the Illinois senator took a series of bold steps to signal his focus was riveted on the fall campaign:

_ He severed all remaining ties with his Chicago church and politically meddlesome pastors who have preached from its pulpit.

_ His campaign announced he would go to the lion's den, the site of this summer's GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., for a rally this Tuesday marking the end of the primary season.

_ He stepped up his criticism of McCain, pummeling him on Iraq, Iran and veterans matters.

Former Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle, Obama's top supporter here in South Dakota and leader of the effort to round up superdelegates, on Sunday predicted the floodgates would open this week as remaining superdelegates jump on the Obama bandwagon.

"I think we're going to have a nominee before the end of this week," Daschle said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The primary season ends Tuesday, with contests here and in Montana. Obama was spending Sunday, and all of Saturday, campaigning here.

Story continues below

Obama's complete break with Trinity United Church of Christ will provide a degree of cover for superdelegates poised to endorse him but possibly still uncomfortable about some of his entanglements.

And the same things that make it easier for Obama to cement his victory among superdelegates will help him coax independents to swing his way in the fall.

Obama hasn't yet declared that his nomination is inevitable. But he's on the very edge.

"We are getting very close to the number, the new number, now that Michigan and Florida have been added," he told reporters traveling with him.

"We are getting close to the number that will give us the nomination. And if we've hit that number on Tuesday night we will announce that _ and I think even if we don't, this is the end of the primary season," he said. Thus the in-your face decision to hold Tuesday night's primary season wrap-up rally at the Xcel Energy Center, site of the GOP convention beginning Sept. 1.

"I think it's very important for us to pivot and focus on the clear contrast that will exist between Democrats and Republicans in this election," Obama said.

Contributing to the dynamic as Obama heads toward the general election is that he has been painted so poorly by the Clinton campaign _ from first portraying him as another manifestation of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson to suggesting her rival could be in the same line as other Democratic nominees who lost badly, including George McGovern, the 1972 candidate defeated by President Nixon in a landslide.

Clinton once worked for McGovern's candidacy. McGovern, also of South Dakota, earlier supported Clinton but switched his allegiance to Obama in May and urged her to drop out of the race. He described Obama's lead as "insurmountable" and argued "Democrats need to be gathering in a united way behind him."

Despite continued defiant assertions by Clinton that she would be a better candidate against McCain, particularly in industrial swing states, even some of her most ardent supporters are now subdued, perhaps resigned to the inevitability of an Obama candidacy.

"He would make a good president, and we're not saying he can't get elected," top Clinton strategist Harold Ickes said Sunday.

Clearly, there are some big general election challenges ahead for Obama.

"Obama has to deal with the issue of white working-class reservations about him, highly social conservative attitudes," said Andrew Kohut, president of the independent Pew Research Center.

In many ways, Obama's resignation from the church and repudiation of ministers who made inflammatory racial comments from its pulpit should help with this group.

But more important, said Kohut, Obama needs to strongly reach out to independents. "Right now, they're breaking for Obama. All elections are about how independent voters break."

Plus, Obama is the first one to acknowledge that things happen, and that in a YouTube world, anything can rear up instantly and come close to destroying your political career _ like the sermons of two preachers who are among his longtime acquaintances and supporters.

Remarks by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, inflamed racial tensions. These were reinforced by recent comments from the same pulpit by a visiting pastor, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, that raised racial issues and mocked Clinton. Clips of both were circulated extensively on YouTube and shown on television.

"I have to say this was one I didn't see coming. We knew there were going to be some things we didn't see coming. This was one," Obama said. "I didn't anticipate my fairly conventional Christian faith being subject to such challenge and such scrutiny. Initially with e-mails suggesting I was a Muslim, later with the controversy that Trinity generated."

Th eheadline is flawed... it should read./. "it's Obama's party now ... for teh Nader herders and AA voters who stay".

We're going to see an exodus of centrists, moderates and rationalists the likes of which teh party has never seen before. The only question is whether the 80% of the party not supporting Obama will stay home or go elsewhere. Interesting times indeed.

Wow 80%? I thought it was more like 95%. Maybe Obama brought Chicago politics to all the states that he won. Who knew?

No. Let;'s be fair and unbiased. The nader herd probably account for a grand total of around 10%. The AA community also accounts for 9% of the generral electorate. He has the support of about 20% of the party.

The Clintons are only progressive politicians in minds of Clintonites.
The 90s saw a continuation of Reagan/Bush policies of exporting jobs through trade. They were the cause of the congress being handed to Newt and then the Hammer. They paid lip service to liberal causes but if you look at their record they did nothing for those who put them in office but rewarded the very people who despised them.
They are the most bi-polar couple ever to be seen in American politics.Anyone wanting to return to Springer in the Whitehouse needs therapy bad.

but that should not be so hard. what was the idea of these primaries? to elect a candidate for the presidential elections. so you elect a person, which means: the one who has the highest number, in this case, is the winner. i dont mean going back on your word and get the highest number.
one of the first rules should be: play fair; fair play. but instead some people cheat, and see that as fair. after bill clinton had said that he did not had sexual relations with this woman, it suddenly became household to have oral sex, or girls thinking it was nothing it was just oral sex. like it was some kind of gum you give to some one.
now the other clinton want to let us know that you can cheat, as long as you win.
you clintonites have some some nice role models. they were mine, once, lang ago, ended in februari 2008.

Like Clinton ever had a chance. Do you even understand how much people hate her? Half the Democrats, ALL the Republicans, nearly ALL the independents? She never had a chance. She looked better in the polls because everyone's been firing at Obama for months.

If she'd had a chance to win, it'd been nonstop in the news about all the various fund-raisers of hers in jail, the Rich pardon and others, all the rest of the corruption, the weird religious cult she belongs to...she's been getting a free ride since she doesn't have a chance.

Same old same old candidate from the Democratic political machine. "Denial is not a river in Egypt', as they say. This story had been out for years, it was only picked up by CNN, two days ago--the horror of it all. Next time do your research on a candidate before you make a choice. But, I guess you were all to enthralled by The Obama Girl Video to bother. Hey, but that was news breaking coverage of the Obama campaign by his 'in the tank' media you know whats--Obama Girl in hot pants lovin' all over her Obama poster in her 'dorm' room. What a joke. No wonder this country is in such a sorry mess.

lucidthoughts,

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama has lied, cheated and stole his way to where he is today. And he will be outed for the entire world to see before November. I have said from day one Obama is a lying con Chicago politician that will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

I am SHOCKED CNN even told this true story about the ruthless Obama. I have known about how horrible of a person Obama is ever since he announced. It didn't take much research to find his dirty past. How he climbed on other AA backs to be the ONLY candidate in the race. Why AA in this presidential race support this AA backstabber I have no idea. They were good candidates who would have put the Chicago people first. unlike Obama. They were not trying to climb their way up the slimly Daily - Akelrod and Obama ladder. They were in it for the people of Chicago, not for selfish reasons. Obama is not innocent the way these cult kids think he is. Obama is dirty as he!!.

What do you get when Hillary supporters in mass vote against the low life Obama????
A landslide defeat for Obama and his butt kissers.

It's funny to think this is your evidence of Obama supporters not doing their homework.

Do you think that Hillary (or McCain) has never played 'hardball' to win an election? Ever been dishonest to bolster her positions?

Have you even been paying attention to her primary campaign?

I truly believe that you would chop off your nose to spite your face.

As for that second link, give me a break.

He said Rumsfeld was not out of the political mainstream in terms of Bush's potential nominees. Let's see the entire context of that conversation.

At that time, Rumsfeld was a previous Sec. of Defense who has served under Ford; supported the president's position of détente; and had been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Are you saying that Rumsfeld lied outside the political mainstream in 2001 BEFORE his second stint as Sec. of Defense?

Hmm. Good to know Obama can roll up his sleeves, because he will need to to beat McCain. Still, I have followed this primary campaign closely, and it seems to me that when possible, Obama always takes the high road and tries to unite. The fact he is not Bambi and won't stand still for swiftboating and whisper campaigns is a good thing, not a bad.

Biased? They've kissed his ass during the entire campaign and haven't reported anything of substance on his background at all. They were only forced to give the Rev. Wright story play, because the videos got it. If they hadn't, they would have never played them. The only video they played for about a month was the Obama Girl video, yeah, that was substantive reporting on Obama by the MSM who has been in the tank for Obama for this entire primary race.

And she voted like most democrats..........................they did not know the intelligence was purposely flawed.............neither did Barack.

--------

JBsouth, I want to answer you because it's the central reason I stopped considering voting for or supporting Clinton.

I believe that she voted for that war for purely political reasons. I believe she was the Senator from NY, NY wanted to hit back, hard, and she saw political capitol there. She rolled the dice.

It's the same reason she voted for the Kyle-Leiberman amendment. She thought she was going to be the nominee and she saw a slight Florida advantage for being rabidly anti-Iran.

That's twice. Two purely political calculations regarding going to war.

I can't give her a volunteer army to play with. It's wrong. It's unthinkable.

Some things to keep in mind:
Popular vote: remember that FL and MI are included in Hil's math, even though those primaries didn't count, and Obama and Hillary did not have a CONTEST there-and no expectation on the part of voters that their votes would count. Everywhere Obama has challenged her lead in a contest, he has brought voters over to him...think about Pennsylvania-(9.4) down from 20.
Obama: -0- votes for Michigan. Does this reflect the voters in Michigan? I don't think so.
Remember that Hillary doesn't include the caucuses in her count, and it is not clear if the 2 non-binding primaries are counted in her calculation (NE & ?)
This popular vote argument is a big, fat lie. If you go to Hil's website, that is all they are talking about, Hillary is heartless, she is keeping the dream alive for her loyalists.
Also, regarding our predictions-both the dem primary and the general election-are unique in our American history in so many ways. I don't know why we expect things to repeat in the same way. This is new territory.
There does seem to be some recurrence and common sense in the notion that a divided party will fail. The big question is...is it just the wackadoodle Hil supporters who won't vote for Obama, and if so, how big of a population are they?
In polls: Republicans will answer MCCAIN over Obama and HILLARY over MCCAIN just to **** up the system.

"Hillary is heartless, she is keeping the dream alive for her loyalists." comment by "puellagina"

I couldn't agree more with that statement. Hillary continues to feed rhetoric and propaganda to her supporters so they continue to fight but they do not realize the fighting only makes them look petty and selfish.

At this point there is no reason to keep fighting if you have your wits about you. But Hillary keeps on going, handing out marching orders to the loyally blind and pretending that she actually has a real chance. This will only make her inevitable loss even harder for her supporters to accept, and it wouldn't really surprise me if this move was intentional on Clinton's behalf.

As President you have the ability to set the agenda, Bush's tax cuts....... Please try harder

Obama continues to run a class campaign. Speaking Tuesday night at the site of the GOP convention is perfect. The most intriguing aspect of an Obama administration is the very real possibility of coattails a mile long, where both the House and Senate largely agree with his agenda. This force of nature named Obama will continue to enchant most people who take the time to listen. Most of Hillary's supporters and a clear majority of independents will get his vote. Oh, the possibilities...
