Judy Davis Wins Libel Suit Against Australian Paper

The actress Judy Davis has won her defamation case against News Ltd's Nationwide News.

The 53-year-old sued over articles in The Daily Telegraph newspaper and other publications that suggested she was selfish in opposing developments at Birchgrove Oval to improve children's safety.

The February 2006 articles related to Davis's attendance at a Leichhardt Council meeting about the proposed erection of floodlights at an oval near her home at Birchgrove.

The star of more than 40 films and a two-time Oscar nominee, Davis told the court she had attended the council meeting to "listen and learn" about the installation of the floodlights at the oval near her home.

For your information, News Limited, which is the company that Judy Davis sued is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who owns a majority of the newspapers in Australia. So, if you're wishing for the damages to be reduced to practically nothing, then I must assume that you're a Rupert Murdoch fan. And if you are, well, what a pity!
