COLUMBIA, S.C. — House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn is endorsing Barack Obama for president.

The South Carolina congressman told The Associated Press on Monday that he has started to phone the state's superdelegates to ask them to get behind one candidate. When asked whether that candidate was Obama, Clyburn said yes.

Clyburn says he'll make a formal endorsement announcement Tuesday.

The backing of the highest-ranking black member of Congress comes more than four months after Obama won the Democratic primary in South Carolina.

If voters can't see that Sen. Obama has taken the high road thru this entire process, then they are just HRC and McCain clones.

People say that he played the race card. Wrong! Sen. Obama did not want race to be an issue due to the fact that he is African American. Being of mixed race, he wanted the voters to see that we are all the same and did not want to be looked at like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, because no one REALLY took them seriously.

She was the one who came out and campaigned as if she was a republican. She was the one who came out and voiced her case for the nomination using Karl Rove's map. Bill is the one who talked of his anger towards Sen. Obama for his response to Rev. Pfleger while HRC never even apologized for the RFK comments.

Someone please tell me what Sen. Obama did or said that shows he played the race card or any other card in the race. Hillary is out of it now........and she has gone out kicking and screaming.

This is historic. I am very proud of Sen. Obama. As an African American woman, I have never felt the feelings that I am feeling right now. "Proud" does not seem to express my feelings totally. I am at a lose.

Congratulations Sen. Obama.

Are You Insane? Please go to www.dontvoteobama.net and see who the real barack Obama is if you dare, and havent already overdosed on his koolaid. I can not believe so many people have been taken in by him. He will lead us stright down the path to hell if he is elected! I am starting an all out campaign right now to see to it that doesnt happen, and mccain becomes the next president! This Obamanation is no more qualified to be president than my dog out in the yard! And michelle is just as big a racist hate monger as he is. What is wrong with people that they cant see this? what exactly has he promised? CHANGE! But he hasnt even said what that change is. well I, along with a lot of other people think we know, and we dont like it. Within a yr or 2 we will see our individual freedoms taken away even more than they already are if he is elected. Get it thru your heads, he is Anti- American, racist, liar and terrorist associated. like i said check out www.dontvoteobama.net, if you dare!

Continuation:

I can list so many more facts for you, but it’s very bothersome when people create these false opinions and try to convey them into facts. You stated that he doesn’t care for the people; well what about the holiday gas tax, voted against the war, voted for the GI bill, worked as a community organizer on the South side of Chicago which he turned down six figure jobs on Wall Street. He was telling us the truth and looking out for the best of us. I need for you to explain the phony language. I guess that’s another opinion you transformed into factual. You make real women look desperate, childish and very un-american. You rather vote for McCain who doesn’t share the same values as Clinton to spite Obama. That is just sad and pitiful and disgraceful!

voted against the war............wasn't in the Senate to vote....

worked as a community organizer on the South side of Chicago which he turned down six figure jobs on Wall Street................actually only was community organizer for 2yrs. Went back to school to get law degree, what six figure salary would he get with an undergraduate degree?

Hillary & Bill Clinton's race baiting is what made Rep. Clyburn's decision easy.

He endorsed him a long time ago - he just announced it today.

His rhetoric continuously throughout this campaign has been scornful of the Clintons, and praising of Obama.

The only reason he waited until today was to give the "appearance" of neutrality.

Next will be Donna "Obama" Brazile. She's another one who has been singing the praises of the O-man since the beginning.

I truly believe they are victims of identity politics (as the other 97+% African Americans) who support him.

Who do these (unbiased [not] superdelegataes) think they're kidding, by claiming they're neutral - not me!

LeftLeaner,
What do you call it when 100% of the white American's voted for John Kerry & George Bush in 2004? White Power? White Racism? For decades African American's have been a solid voting block (90%) for Democratic candidates and if you are a Democrat we have been there for your candidate wholeheartedly, now when the majority of African American's support a African American viable candidate in mass, you cry foul (reverse racism).
I would wager 17 months ago, Hillary was polling 80% in the African American voter's, maybe her message, was wrong and clearly the majority of voters (delegates) have agreed and so goes her chance at the nomination.

Rep. Clyburn was one of the biggest Obama surrogate race baiters. Just look at his statements before SC and again before NC. He said he was neutral.........just like Donna Brazille was neutral.

Why do you attribute these mighty qualities to him - oh, I guess because he chose YOUR candidate.

Would he hold those same qualities if he had chosen the most qualified candidate, Clinton?
06:54 AM on 06/03/2008
Clyburn has now opened the floodgates for the likes of Pelosi, Gore, Brazile and Dean to step up to the plate, it's time.

What a smart man, Jim Clyburn is and me, what a smart woman I am or maybe I'm just your run-of-the-mill psychic 'cause I had a feeling that Jim Clyburn was an Obama man (remember when he scolded, Hillary? hehe) yeah, I could tell he was on our side. Again, WHAT a smart man!

What a sweet bunch of comments, mostly, below. Delightful to read. To the negative posters - suck it up, live with it and think of how much the rest of the world is now admiring the U.S. after nearly six years of misery.

Finally this is ending. Watching this from Japan isn't as dramatic as it is not in real time, but it
sure has taken a toll on my work. Hillary out of the race will give me some peace. Obama, go get

OMG! I'm watching Keith Olberman and Hillary is saying she's more than 300,000 over in the popular vote. While you can hear few cheering for her some of them actually standing in the same frame as her seem unfazed.

I guess they aren't all delusional.

Do you believe this one, according to Clinton Network News, Clinton is leading by double digits in SD? Does anyone know what other polls are saying about SD? I mean I thought Obama was leading in that state?

Agreed. I assume Senator Clinton will do the right things during the coming month, we also need to begin the unity process.

It's comments like nativeeyes that guarantee that we who support Hillary will never vote for Obama. We'll stay home first. There is absolutely no need to be so hateful. Hillary has as much right as anyone else who chose to run -- at least show a little decency.
