Brigitte Bardot Convicted Of Provoking Racial Hatred

PARIS — Brigitte Bardot was convicted Tuesday of provoking discrimination and racial hatred for writing that Muslims are destroying France.

A Paris court also handed down a $23,325 fine against the former screen siren and animal rights campaigner. The court also ordered Bardot to pay $1,555 in damages to MRAP.

Bardot's lawyer, Francois-Xavier Kelidjian, said he would talk to her about the possibility of an appeal.

A leading French anti-racism group known as MRAP filed a lawsuit last year over a letter she sent to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The remarks were published in her foundation's quarterly journal.

In the December 2006 letter to Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot said France is "tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts."

Bardot, 73, was referring to the Muslim feast of Aid el-Kebir, celebrated by slaughtering sheep.

French anti-racism laws prevent inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds. Bardot had been convicted four times previously for inciting racial hatred.

"She is tired of this type of proceedings," he said. "She has the impression that people want to silence her. She will not be silenced in her defense of animal rights."

I am really sick of what is happening in this country and this world. People throw words racists and unpatriotic. Patriotism is defines as "devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty." There is nothing unpatriotic about Bridigtte Barot fighting to save France as she knows it. There are significant societal changes that have effected the culture of France and other European countries. A citizen should be able to speak of assimilation without being called racist. I wish that more immigrants would learn to speak english. If I moved to another country I would learn the language. Does that make me racist?

What they did to the Algerians was beyond criminal. The French put the death penalty on my mother-in-law, tortured her, murdered her father and brother...and all before her 20th birthday. Her only crime was fighting against a colonizing power who treated her like a second-class citizen and raped her country's resources.

And btw, slaughtering sheep for Eid-ul-Adha is a religious exercize celebrated every year. It's not cruel. The animals are not abused. They are killed quickly. And I would say that the way many animals are killed for commercial use is more inhumane.

Just as bullfighting is beyond acceptance by normal minds, so is the slaughter of animals in the guise of religious tradition. France banned the nailing of the feet of Geese to wood planks so as to force feed them liquor to cause them a death that benefited to making of pate and France should tell Muslims that cutting the throats of sheep is banned as well.

Animals are our charge. Love them don't eat them. Celebrate them, don't slaughter them.
