ATLANTA — Former President Carter said Tuesday he will endorse Democrat Barack Obama after the last two states vote.

"The fact is the Obama people already know they have my vote when the polls close tonight," Carter told The Associated Press after speaking at the Georgia World Congress Center Tuesday afternoon.

His comments came as Obama clinched the nomination, according to a tally of convention delegates by The Associated Press.

Carter, a superdelegate, has remained officially neutral in the race but has offered strong hints that he would end up in Obama's corner. He has noted that his children, grandchildren and their spouses back the Illinois senator.

Carter also recently urged Obama's rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to abandon her White House bid in early June at the latest.

The former president had been one of the highest profile Democrats who had yet to make a pick in the long presidential primary.

His spokeswoman, Deanna Congilio, said there were no plans for any additional statement.

South Dakota and Montana were holding the last primaries.

Jimmy Carter and Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean in the 2004 Primaries. Dean's stewardship of the DNC was the driving force in the Democratic sweep of 2006. He wrote the play book that Obama used to win the nomination.

He has clearly earned the Vice Presidency, and the opportunity to use that platform to run for President in 2016

President Jimmy Carter is to be admired for his public service in and out of the White House. Habitat for Humanity is an organization carved from Jimmy Carter's heart! Let's see what the bozo that is currently in office does for our nation once he leaves the White House. I remember him admiring Clinton and his daddy for the money they make for speeches and stating that he needed to do something like that to fill up his "cofers" again since the Presidency doesn't pay much! Too bad the idiot can't form a sentence much less come up with an idea of his own.

amen, best ex president we ever had. He has done a lot, and he can still swing a baseball bat. Have you seen that PBS special about how his hometown has a big softball game for his birthday? The guy can still field like a 20 year old.

Well, the nation has really suffered because we turned the canal over to Panama, no? A typical Republican fake issue, based on watching too many John Wayne movies. Works best with the Viagra crowd.

This is very nice, but a little late in the day. Ex-president Carter means well but never quite gets it right.

I am beginning to think he is slow on the delivery 'cause he is so patient. He takes too much time to resolve things. If I was his wife I would have pulled off all my hair by now.

Mr. Carter has been one of my heroes for many years, and to my mind a truer American doesn't exist in this country. Perhaps not "getting it quite right" IS the right way...and perhaps waiting until the primaries are over until endorsing is too!
Mr. Carter shows us all, once again, how real patriotism and compassion works. And intelligence, and sticking to your convictions, and even humility....it would have been self-aggrandizement for him to do otherwise(endorsing earlier).
A truly great man. He was right about so many things back in the 70's, and he's still right today.

Maybe we can get him to send monitors to FL and OH to keep the traitorous repug machine from rigging any more elections- but I doubt he'd dirty his hands dealing with such corruption.

Hey JustafreakinminuteSweetie...George Bush and Senator McCain combined don't have the depth of intellect that Jimmy Carter has even in his sunset years. Of course I know its tough to recognize that which one has no experience of. Try remedial college courses, you might find an orginal thought or two.

To think...if Reagan hadn't used our hostages as "bargaining chips"...there would have been a carter second term....and who knows, maybe today's energy crisis wouldn't be as severe....but, no...we got an alzheimer raddled communicator who destroyed our economy with reaganomics, and soiled the WH with Iran/Contra....yes...I would have taken a Carter 2nd term any day of the week.

I have believed this for many years. The October Surprise was one of the most aggregious political crimes of our history - with such tragic results. We would all be much better off today if the CIA and Reagan had not been so traitorous.

How fitting - Jimmy C coming out of his stupor for BO. The President that drug us into a miserable economic situation (Prime rate of 23+% - so don't say it is worse now - it isn't even close), killed domestic oil exploration/production with PRICE CONTROLS and let our military deteriorate to a dangerous level. BO plans the same reckless and moronic programs as that nitwit Carter. Learn from history or be doomed to repeat it. Will the DNC be seating all 57 States at the convention. I still think that is so funny BO said that - yes, scary too. And everyone went nuts when Dan Quayle couldn't spell potato.

The prime rate was that high in order to keep inflation from getting worse. As Republicans like to say, the economy of the first four years of a presidency is the result of the efforts of the previous president. Carter was just trying to deal with the mess that Ford left.

I'm sure his approval rating had nothing to do with that hostage situation which was beyond his control and which, despite the way it was covered, was resolved by Carter while Reagan was getting sworn in.

It is a great day in America.
Racism is dead.
people of all races have spoken and have chosen a 1/2 black person as a nominee for President.
I'm not saying racism no longer exists. As long as there are people such as rev. wright, david duke, luis farakan and senator byrd, there will be some racism, however, racism as an institution of this great country is over. Never again can anyone claim they have been oppresed simply because of their skin color.
R.I.P. racism.
God Bless America.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but racism is not dead. It's far from dead. It's a world-wide problem. And it's far from fixed. Obama is a great man, but he has not ended racism. Don't delude yourself. The fight has just begun, so gear up. If we want to end injustice, we're going to have to fight for it.

You really ought to get out more ... come to Europe and I don't mean the "tourist package", come see what happens when people literally "ignore" their differences and get along. After 15+ yrs here, I no longer "pursue happiness" -- I'm here.

What you read and hear about Europes "troubled" problems are not the reality for most of us. We're are not imune to racism and bigotry but they are very few in the larger scheme of things.

Inter-racial couples is almost the norm here, I live in a "Muslim" neighbourhood, my friends are of many nationalities and colours. Gays have been marrying here for almost a decade and have overall shown that they are extra-exceptional parents. When I go home to America I feel as though I am traveling back in time ... Senator Obama will be a huge step forward, he will not be the end-all of racism and bigotry but he will be the beginning to the end of it.

America needs to grow up, America needs to move forward. You're problems are too great at this moment to continue dealing with skin colour and race. The world is holding it's breathe.
