ATLANTA — Former President Carter said Tuesday he will endorse Democrat Barack Obama after the last two states vote.

"The fact is the Obama people already know they have my vote when the polls close tonight," Carter told The Associated Press after speaking at the Georgia World Congress Center Tuesday afternoon.

His comments came as Obama clinched the nomination, according to a tally of convention delegates by The Associated Press.

Carter, a superdelegate, has remained officially neutral in the race but has offered strong hints that he would end up in Obama's corner. He has noted that his children, grandchildren and their spouses back the Illinois senator.

Carter also recently urged Obama's rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to abandon her White House bid in early June at the latest.

The former president had been one of the highest profile Democrats who had yet to make a pick in the long presidential primary.

His spokeswoman, Deanna Congilio, said there were no plans for any additional statement.

South Dakota and Montana were holding the last primaries.

Carter was, and continues to be, a humanitarian who cared first about humanity, second about America and last by a long ways about himself. He was let down disgracefully by a military given the task of rescuing the hostages who ended up barely capable of rescuing themselves and let it pass without blaming them publicly.

Not to denigrate the sacrifice of those who gave of their best during the abortive mission, they deserved better than they were given. History has pretty well put the blame where it should lie there and there is nothing new about people talking warfighting and putting at risk other people's lives in inadequate circumstances.

For those who want to believe Carter would have been the bigger man by killing millions, I feel sorry for you. Carter will remain someone the US can feel proud of. Let us leave Russia to admire populist thugs who trade short term gain for long term disaster.

Wooh, the flying monkeys are out in force commenting on this blog. Carter was way ahead of his time. He still is. The US is still floundering about in a 19th Century state of mind.

Carter was an ineffectual president. BUT, he's a great humanitarian, with TRUE Christian values and principles, and is one of the few politicans of any era to be honest and display any semblance of a conscience. Welcome aboard, Mr. President.

A nice summation of Carter's place in the list of presidents. Too bad his accomplishments did not match his integrity.

The perfect modern president would combine Reagan's ability at public speaking, Carter's personal values, and Kennedy's ability to accomplish things.

The nightmare modern president would combine Bush's ability at public speaking, Bush's personal values, and Bush's ability to accomplish things.

Carter was a victim of the idiotic attitudes in Washington that Obama wants to change. It's fitting that Carter would support him.

Thanks Jimmy!
The only time in my life where not one war around the Earth was taking place - and it was during his presidency.
Peace on earth.
Thanks to the most honest president in our history; A true credit to humanity; A Christian who was not a hypocrite in his religeous beliefs! And a great president!

You are kidding me?! READ some HISTORY kids. Africa was in constant conflict during Jimmy's "leadership". Russians and Cubas running the south part of Africa. Only the South Africans were holding them at bay. How about Cambodia? Ever hear about that little piece of Heaven during 1975-1979?! You folks need to log off once in a while and find out 1) What is really going on around the world and 2) how wwe got where we are now.

My thanks to Jimmy go for gas lines, price controls, reduced domestic oil and gas exploration, sky high interest rates, . . ..

If President Carter said that we shouldn't vote for Obama, I wouldn't. That's how much respect I have for him.

Thank you, President Carter.

Has there been a single piece of advice from Penn's mouth which was actually helpful for Hillary? Most of his strageties have done more for McCain and Obama than Hillary.

Heard a lady on Rush Limbaugh today and she said she felt like she committed adultery because she voted for Hillary. Now it makes sense. Most of these Hillary Supporters
are involved in Operation Chaos and that is why Clinton is 40 million in the hole and Obama $ 40 million in the black!!! You have been fooled.

Thanks President Carter.
I wish you had been more outspoken about how the elections in Florida and Michigan were tainted yb the ruling of the DNC that they would not count.. I think that is a sticking point and technicality in this process that the Clinton campaign continues to try to take advantage of.

So far, 18 superdelegates added for Obama today, as of 5:45, with two of these being Clinton-to-Obama switches. Plus, there are 10 Edwards delegates on the way any second!
