WASHINGTON — Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday rejected a suspension of the federal gasoline tax as proposed by his party's presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain. Cheney said it would offer little help to consumers coping with gas prices around $4 a gallon.

The vice president's critique went further than President Bush's own comments on the idea, which appears dead anyway.

"I think it's a false notion, in the sense that you're not going to have much of an impact, given the size of the gasoline tax on the total cost of the gallon of gas," Cheney said when asked about the matter during a luncheon appearance. "You might buy a little bit of relief there, but it's minimal."

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline on Monday was $3.98, according to a survey of stations by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Of that total, the federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon.

Both McCain, R-Ariz., and a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, have proposed suspending the tax.

Bush has said he would consider any idea from Congress, but he was not enthusiastic about it.

Democratic leaders in Congress have shown little interest, too, and no votes are anticipated on the matter in the House or the Senate.

The gas tax is the main source of revenue for the Highway Trust Fund that provides grants for highway and bridge construction and repair.

Cheney said the broader solution is to expand the exploration of energy sources in the United States. Bush has long called for opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil development, which is strongly opposed by environmentalists, most Democrats and a few moderate Republicans.

The vice president spoke in a Q&A session at the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize luncheon.

When asked about the scathing tell-all book by Bush's former press secretary Scott McClellan, Cheney said he hadn't read it and had no plans to do so. But he did pointedly comment when asked generally about former administration officials who write such books, saying, "I thought Bob Dole got it about right."

Dole said, among other things, that "there are miserable creatures" like McClellan in every administration who are spurred on by greed. Cheney's comment comes after White House press secretary Dana Perino has said the White House harbors "no ill feelings" toward McClellan.

I find it amazing that this site is crediting Cheney for his point of view.
It's a sign of the apocalypse.

I'm not sure what's more disturbing... that I agree with Cheney on this or that he said something that actually has truth in it.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Cheney is a smart guy even though he is Evil. McCain is not very bright sorry thats how comes off to me. I dont know if he was always this way or its a sign of age but from the way he speak he doesnt have a full grasp of the issues. Take him being commander and chief for example he doesnt look at the big picture he is all about Iraq its like other US interests doesnt matter. The war in Afghanistan doesnt seem to matter Iraq is the only mypoic focal point you cant be commander in chief and think that way you have to be able to look at the big picture.

I still say this guy is NOT being vetted by the media.

To attribute the actions of a few supporters to the entire support one politician receives is a flawed viewpoint. I am an ObaVnd I have family from West Virginia that voted for clinton, obama, and mccain. I found Cheney's comments undignified and disgraceful and also another example of why he has been a poor public servant.

When did Obama slander West Virginians? In your mind only.

McCain and Hillary agree on gas tax. McCain and Hillary agree with not talking to Iran. Do they both agree, or is it just Hillary, on a bill to ban the burning of the American flag? Anyone supporting the Constitution is against this, including Republicans. Hillary supported a bill to make it more difficult for us average workers to declare bankruptcy and was a boon to the banks. Hillary is in reality a neocon.

What a way to back your party's man for president! With friends like Cheney you don't need any enemies. Makes me think he may have a bet out on who wins in November.

Personally, even if it only works out to be $35-$40 for the summer in savings if they suspend the gas tax, that is another 1/2 tank of gas for some of us.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:14 AM on 06/03/2008

yeah ,and the loss of jobs for about 300,000 highway workers.they'd probably give you the lousy $28,so they could keep their jobs.you should probably park your suv.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:44 AM on 06/03/2008

yeah you will get a half a tank and the oil companies (which Cheney owns) will make you pay with three tanks worth. That is if the oil companies decides to lower the prices. Don't sell yourself for 35 - 40 bucks you are worth more.

With no money for highway repair and bridge repair, what kind of roads are you going to drive that car over? Also, would cost about 30,000 jobs.

BTW, do you really believe that the oil companies won't increase the price of gas to make up the difference? Of coujrse they will! And you'll still have your broken roads and bridges and loss of 30,000 job. A no-brainer if you ask me.

A gas holiday is a very short sided policy that will have no impact on the current issues that we are dealing with in relation to energy policy and oil dependency. It is not as simple as waving a wand over the problem and announcing it solved.

All of this shows you that McCain knows NOTHING about the economy. Even his superiors know it's a sham.

Dick Cheney hates the gas-tax suspension because he hates the idea of Americans not paying as much money as possible for gasoline. He feeds off our misery. That's why he's happier and smiling more than at any other time in the past 7 years. It's time for him to sit back and reap the rewards of his energy policy. It took alot of work, with a terrorist attack and an invasion of Iraq, but it's all gravy now, so he'll be sucking the sweet nector of money until the next cardiac arrest renders useless what's left of his cold, mechanical heart.

what happened to hydrogen cars Bush promised seven years ago? What exactly has Bush done as President to ween us off foreign oil? Why did Bush not issue tax credits for alternative energies? Why did Bush not increase the CAFE standards? Why is Bush such a tool?

Excuse me, I would be very happy with a relief from the gas tax.
I guess people on this site are very rich.I would welcome any
relief,Even if it's small

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:54 AM on 06/03/2008

The point is you wouldn't see any relief.

1. Consumption would increase which would cause the price to rise.
2. The oil companies would raise their price to make up the difference.
3. The tax pays for road improvements. Thousands of construction workers would be out of a job so you could save $30.
4. McCain won't be president this summer, so he couldn't make it happen anyway.
5. Where's the proposal? It's June. Summer starts in less than 3 weeks. Obviously he's not serious.

This is pandering. It won't work and that's why no (not one) economist thinks this is a good idea.

People on this site are not rich. We just get information from credible sources instead of blindly following everything a candidate says when trying to get elected.

You're excused.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:45 AM on 06/03/2008

Have you not paid attention at all? You would get no relief. It isn't like a sales tax that the stations would just stop charging you for, it's bundled in to the price. The oil companies simply wouldn't have to pay the tax to the government. They wouldn't have to drop the price, and in fact when it's been tried in some states, they didn't drop the price. They pocketed the money.

All those billions would just go to the oil companies instead of going to pay for highway repairs. We'd just increase the national debt even more.

And if you are that hard up for what would amount to about $3 a week, then maybe you shouldn't be spending time on this website and should be out earning money. You can make up all the money you'd save over the entire summer from this joke of a plan within a few hours. Hell, the old lady next to me pays me $5 a week to cut her grass in the summer because it gets too hot for her. I'd do it for free but she insists on paying. I make more doing that in 45 minutes each week than I'd save from this silly gas tax plan that won't even work.

Yeah, I'm rich alright. Rich enough to fix my truck's front end every year because of all the potholes here in Colorado. Yeah, even less money for road repair is a good idea!

The point is what you save in tax (maybe $30 over the WHOLE SUMMER) - you will spend 10 times the amount on repairs to your car driving on decaying roads.

I'm no where near rich. But I can save $30 over the summer by not stopping at McDonalds three or four times. That's about it. What I can't do is repair the roads myself.

People on this site are largely against it because there is a bigger impact than our personal savings of approx $20 over the course of the summer. This small savings for you, would mean roads, bridges are not repaired. It would mean people getting laid off of their job. So no its not that dems are rich, its that we care about more than ourselves.

Me too. I hope also that he uses the fact that Mitt Romney hasn't been to Iraq just once and that was two years ago and Guiliani has NEVER been to Iraq. So all of McBush's hype on CIC's having to know what's on the ground is completely overstated because two former presidential candidates and two possible VP candidates don't fit that bill.

How can you EVER use ANYTHING Cheney says as a weapon against ANYONE?
If Obama does, we know he is in the pocket of the oil men like Cheney...
Why else would he oppose it?
NOT wise of Obama to do...
But we now know how much Obamabots have come to admire Dick and his pronouncements on this and on incest in West Virginia...

You nuts have made a true friend in a true lunatic...enjoy that newfound friendship.
Once again, Obama has some very strange pals...
