McCain Continues Courtship Of Clinton Voters

John McCain's courtship of Sen. Hillary Clinton disaffected supporters accelerated on Tuesday night, as the Arizona Republican continued his charm offensive to the supporters of the likely vanquished Democratic nominee.

Speaking this evening in Louisiana, McCain praised Clinton for both the campaign she's run and her personal and political character.

"Senator Clinton has earned great respect for her tenacity and courage," he said. "The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received. As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach. I am proud to call her my friend."

The remark came just after McCain commended "both Senators Obama and Clinton for the long, hard race they have run." Ironically, the rest of his speech was spent ripping Obama on a host of issues while cheering on the New York Democrat.

The speech -- deemed a launching point for the general election campaign -- is an extension of what has become a concerted effort on the part of McCain and his aides to reap the benefits of the currently fractured Democratic Party. Earlier on Tuesday, Tim Pawlenty, the governor of Minnesota, stressed that Clinton backers would find a comfortable home supporting the Republican nominee.

"There's going to be a competition for many of Hillary Clinton's former supporters," said the Republican Governor. "I think many of those voters are going to consider supporting McCain. They see in him many of the same characteristics they saw in Hillary Clinton."

On Monday, meanwhile, the Senator and aides offered sympathy to Clinton for the unfair treatment that he said she has received throughout the primary. McCain himself praised the New York Democrat for inspiring "generations of American women to believe that they can reach the highest office in this nation."

Update: Not one to cede political turf, Barack Obama is also set to shower Clinton with some flattering language and compliments of his own tonight. From excerpts of his speech:

Senator Hillary Clinton has made history in this campaign not just because she's a woman who has done what no woman has done before, but because she's a leader who inspires millions of Americans with her strength, her courage, and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight.

We've certainly had our differences over the last sixteen months. But as someone who's shared a stage with her many times, I can tell you that what gets Hillary Clinton up in the morning -- even in the face of tough odds -- is exactly what sent her and Bill Clinton to sign up for their first campaign in Texas all those years ago; what sent her to work at the Children's Defense Fund and made her fight for health care as First Lady; what led her to the United States Senate and fueled her barrier-breaking campaign for the presidency -- an unyielding desire to improve the lives of ordinary Americans, no matter how difficult the fight may be. And you can rest assured that when we finally win the battle for universal health care in this country, she will be central to that victory. When we transform our energy policy and lift our children out of poverty, it will be because she worked to help make it happen. Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

No true Democrat would vote for McCain. No true American who believes in freedom or the Rule of law would vote for any Republican.
Obama and Clinton are similar on the issues. Only someone in acult would vote for a person and not for the issues.
McCain has been very disrespectful of women so no real feminist would vote McCain.
Only the Insane would vote for McCain.

There are always Demos who will vote for the Repo man.
Indpendents too, of course, Because of the 'national security'
myth, that only Repos can handle the evils of the world.

Obama should make a great effort to deal with this, as JFK did.

Well McSame you probably won't have to court her supporter very much they are willing to support you over the democratic nominee,I say you can have them they were no true democrats from the begining. They live in the 90's and think you go back there, they live in that fantasy world along with Hillary. It would be beneficial if Obama can reach them ,but I feel they are too far gone and frankly don't want to be reached.

All she has to say is "He's a colleague, an effective senator that I respect. But we're not friends. We never were, and I think it may be several months before friendship is on our agenda."

She should be McCain's VP nominee. Call it the "Obliterate Iran" ticket. Moms love it, apparently.

WOMEN ARE SUPPOSED TO BE INFORMED AND SMART CORRECT/

JOHN MCCAIN REFUSED TO VOTE TO GIVE WOMEN THE SAME PAY AS MEN ON THE SAME JOB. THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY BLOCKED THE VOTE 56-42 IN THE SENATE.

THE VOTE TOOK PLACE IN MAY 2008. THE WOMAN WHO FILED THE CLAIM FOUND SHE MADE 20% LESS THAN THE MEN ON THE SAME JOB FOR 20 YRS. AS A RESULT HER PENSION AND SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN THE MEN ON THE JOB.

SEN. MCCAIN WAS IN NEW ORLEANS AND REFUSED TO RETURN FOR THE VOTE APPARENTLY BECAUSE HE KNEW HIS REPUBLICANS PALS WOULD BLOCK THE VOTE. HE AND THE PRESIDENT SAID PASS AND EQUAL PAY LAW TO PAY WOMEN THE SAME PAY AS MEN WOULD CAUSE WOMEN TO FILE LAWSUITS. FUNNY IF THE EMPOLYERS WOULD GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY THERE WOULD BE NO LAWSUITS. BUT I GUESS THEY HAD NO INTENSIONS OF FORCING EMPLOYERS TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY.

SO WOMEN BEFORE YOU GO RUNNING TO MCCAIN I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU READ UP ON HIS POLICIES BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY MORE YOU WON'T LIKE.

IF HE'S STILL YOUR CHOICE GO FOR IT.

I, as a lifelong democrat will vote for the first time for a republican. You ask why women would do this .well here is my answer, This man could not put is hand over his heart when the pledge was said . Would not where an American pin. Would allow all illegals to enter the country. His wife was only proud of America when her husband ran for the nomination. He is only had four year as a junior senator and did not do much at that. The media was blatantly biased against HRC.
The way I feel as a first generation immigrate is I had to do all the paper work to come over here and then had to wait five years to apply for citizenship so why are others allowed to enter free of charge. So as you said I will go for it .

You may in fact be a first time poster here as you profile indicates this is your only post. I'm sorry I doubt that.

Your failure to answer any of the points raised and instead repeat standard Republican "patriotism" talking points (Again with the Flag Pins, my god) makes me believe you are newly created account by an Operation Chaos Troll or a McCain "McBlogPoints" Blogger trying to disrupt the Democratic Party or sway those who are considering voting their anger instead of their reason.

I urge all posters to be wary of such types. Check out their profiles and respond accordingly. McCain has already begun his "outreach" to the irrational fringe. Don't let them get your anger going anc call them out if you see them.

It's time for true Democrats and Independents who care about the direction of this country to unite and ensure a Democratic President is elected.

You are obviously not a lifetime democrat, as all of your major concerns are trite gop "patriotism" talking points. no democrat would care about any of these manufactured issues.

Quit your trolling, you'll never convince anyone here. We're not all from kentucky & west virginia.

The "hand on heart" thing is pure fabrication in any case, but I'm much rather have Obama's hand not on his heart than McCain's hands (and those of the Supreme Court Justices he'll choose) on women's wombs.

Vote McCain -- you weren't using those civil rights anyways.

Barack Obama is an excellent role model of a true leader. He would make a great president. He is the epitome of good sportsmanship, which is probably why most men admire and support him.

What Is Good Sportsmanship?

Kids learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches.

Parents can help their kids understand that good sportsmanship includes both small gestures and heroic efforts. Displaying good sportsmanship isn't always easy: It can be tough to congratulate the opposing team after losing a close or important game.

Kids who bully or taunt others on the playing field aren't likely to change their behavior when in the classroom or in social situations. In the same way, a child who practices good sportsmanship is likely to carry the respect and appreciation of other people into every other aspect of life.

Good Sports Are Winners

Kids who have coaches who care only about being in first place and say that anything goes as long as they win, pick up the message that it's OK to be ruthless on the field.

Remember the saying "Actions speak louder than words"?

i bet a lot of it will cease the moment she stops carrying on like a spoilt brat and acknowledges Obama as the Democratic nominee, do you not agree?
She says she wants to do what's best for our party...
Fall in behind Obama and admit he won would be best for our party...and a good start.
I have to laugh, reading that last sentence, it should be so obvious.

i can't believe she is left to rant and rave like a lunatic.
Who the heck is controlling this party...for god sake.

Obama said that for political reasons and party unity. I myself have little respect or admiration for either of the Clintons so I'll take a pass on the praises. I feel no different about them today than I did fifteen years ago, and I'll feel no different tomorrow. Her tired speech last night only underscores why this backroom dealer and inside trader continues to be a bad candidate.

Don"t forget McCain also publicly called his current wife a "cunt."

We've endured Bill Clinton, who degraded the presidency by not being able to control his hormones inside the Oval Office, bringing our nation to a standstill at a cost of $7 million; followed by GWB, a dictator who has now bankrupted our country with his and Cheney"s unconstitutional but very profitable-to-them-wars-for-profit; and now there is the prospect of John McCain, a man given to uncontrollable outbursts and temper tantrums, an un-presidential presidential contender who promised to stay in Iraq 100 years and who laughs and sings about yet another war with Iran, a war waged with the lives of more of our country"s men and women, to the tune of Barbara Ann: "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb¦"

Prepared speeches have never been McCains best forum. That's because he is not an actor or a con man. McCain communicates extremely well in townhall style forums where he is actually talking to people and they are talking to him.

Bill Clinton was a great speaker too, but now we know he was just seducing us.

Why has McCain flip-flopped and then flipped again on every position he has held?
McCain is a poor communicator because he has no values to communicate.
McCain just wants power so he can sell American Freedom to the highest bidder.
Republicans are wasting a lot of money that they don't have for these terrible and ineffective trolls gonavy.
If you actually support the Navy and not just the Football team, you would stay away from McCain.
McCain doesn't support the Troops,he opposed the new GI bill that would actually help the troops. McCain just says he supports the Troops, when it comes to doing someting for the Troops McCain sells out.

All anyone needs to point out is that had Clinton won, McCain would be ripping her up one side and down the other, wailing on and on about every Clinton misstep over the last couple decades. He is such a pathetic panderer.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:52 PM on 06/03/2008

Unfortunately, due to the media's horrible treatment of Clinton, the insistance from Obama's supporters that she is a racist, and the disgusting and horrific names that Obama's supporters called both Sen. Clinton and her supporters ("idiots" and "red-necks" come to mind), McCain will probably get those votes and win. That will just be devastating. If Obama chooses someone else for his ticket, he should just kiss those Hillary votes goodbye. He already LOST those votes to her for one reason or another. He will, in essence, have to woo those 17 million voters from scratch. He will have to persuade them to vote for an already rejected agenda. Also, not choosing her as veep would be like slapping 17 million voters right in the face. He can either guarantee himself 17 million votes with little persuasion needed, or take the risk and try to win over 17 million people who have already voted another way. So, in my opinion, it's Clinton's turn to say these words...."DO THE MATH." I like Barack Obama and will vote for him, but I'm a rare breed. I just simply do not under any circumstances vote for anyone who has an R after their name. Very, very few people are like me, so Obama better use that "great judgment" of his and do the right thing.

I think it's gonna be a rare Clinton supporter who's gonna be stupid, or gullible, enough to be manipulated into voting against every policy they believe in, based on brand name.

If these women want to vote for McCain who refused to vote for a bill to give women equal pay, they should go for it.

Women need to get informed before being emotional and hurt themselves by jumping ship and not knowing McCain's policise.

Now is not the time for emotion but facts. If they want to vote for someone, MCCain who blocked women from getting equal pay for the sam jobs that men do, go for it.

IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO BE PAID LESS THAN MEN ON THE SAME JOB VOTE FOR sEN. MCCAIN BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO RETURN TO THE SENATE TO VOTE FOR THE EQUAL PAY LAW THAT WOULD HAVE REQUIRED EMPLOYERS TO PAY WOMEN THE SAY PAY AS MEN ON THE SAME JOB.

WOMEN NEED TO GET INFORMED AND STOP GETTING EMOTIONAL. GET THE FACTS AND THEN MAKE DECISIONS. BUT IF YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR SOME ONE WHO DISRESPECTS WOMEN'S RIGHT TO EQUAL PAY, GO FOR IT.
