A key surrogate to John McCain and a member of the Senator's vice-presidential list, made overt overtures on Tuesday for disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters to join the Arizona Republican.

Speaking on a conference call to preempt Barack Obama's appearance in Minneapolis, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty asserted that Clinton backers would find a natural affinity to McCain's experience, judgment and political leadership.

"There's going to be a competition for many of Hillary Clinton's former supporters," said the Republican Governor. "I think many of those voters are going to consider supporting McCain. They see in him many of the same characteristics they saw in Hillary Clinton."

The remarks underscore a nascent but growing effort on the part of McCain to pry away angered or disillusioned Democrats. On Monday, the Senator and aides offered sympathy to Clinton for the unfair treatment that he said she has received throughout the primary. He also praised the New York Democrat for inspiring "generations of American women to believe that they can reach the highest office in this nation."

Pawlenty's conference call -- which started off with massive technical difficulties -- was not solely dedicated to opening wounds within the Democratic Party. The governor went through a litany of attacks on Obama, saying he was inexperienced, too liberal and -- more to the point -- something of an empty suit.

"Being able to read form a teleprompter is not a prerequisite for being president of the United States," he said of the Illinois Democrat.

Pressed by reporters for specifics, Pawlenty came up a bit lame. He could not specify a specific policy proposal put forth by Obama to justify his claim that the Democratic frontrunner deserved his National Journal ranking as the Senate's most liberal member; in the end, resorting to a gun control policy that Obama helped push in the Illinois State Senate.

Asked specifically if he thinks Obama's lack of experience in world affairs made him a liability for the Oval Office and, consequently, a risk for the country should he end up president, Pawlenty refused to directly address the question.

"I think it is beyond debate that experience is helpful and leads to better wisdom and insight," he said. "It is certainly not the only quality... If you look at Sen. McCain's insight early on in the Bush administration... he alone, or almost alone, on the Republican side, was a voice of saying we need to do this differently."

Over the past week, McCain and his aides have repeatedly hit Obama for not having visited Iraq in more than two years. However, as The Huffington Post reported on Monday, the Senator has surrounded himself with a range of individuals who have visited the war zone as infrequently as Obama. The list includes former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who despite having never been to Iraq, McCain touted as his "strong right arm" in combating Islamic extremism. Gov. Charlie Christ of Florida has never gone, and Mitt Romney, another VP option, has been once.

Asked whether trips likes these should serve as a barometer for McCain's VP choice, Pawlenty, who has been to Iraq three times, replied:

"I think the more times you have been to Iraq the better," he said, "how to understand the situation on the ground and how it has evolved over time."

It's a wonderful plan. It's like I've said a billion times before, DIVIDE AND CONQUER!!! It made me laugh 2 see these Clinton supporters fall 4 this. Why do you all think that Fox embraced Ferraro, the Clintons, McCauliffe & Lenny Davis? Because they love them? HELL NAW! It's 2 leave the party in disarray & extend the olive branch 2 the Clinton supporters when she loses. Or if she wins or become the VP nominee, they'll begin 2 break out their 2,000 pages of Clinton scandals 2 bring the ticket down & eventually win the White House. A very smart plan indeed!

C’mon people…let’s stay focused and clear. Let’s remember that hell hath no fury like a voter scorned and move on – we have bigger fish to fry.

First let me say that I presently advocate for Veteran’s issues and have the deepest respect and admiration for McCain's Vietnam record.

That said, I encourage Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all the rest of the class to look back in history and read quotes from giants like Patton, Bradley, and McArthur. These warriors learned from war that war was brutal, immoral, and futile. McArthur said, “I have known war as few men now living know it. It’s very destructiveness on both friend and foe has rendered it useless as a means of settling international disputes.”

Not so John McCain. His comments in a great NY Times Magazine piece by Matt Bei indicate that he blames squeamish voters and a skeptical media for America being driven from Vietnam. In other words, if it were up to McCain, we would have stayed the course.

So, let’s get over the Hillary hump. I encourage Hillary supporters to wash their faces with nice cold water and start anew. Why…because we should VERY SCARED about the prospect of John McCain becoming President and bringing his obsessive unfinished Vietnam symphony with him. We just spent eight years suffering the consequences of another unfinished work – The Iraq War Symphony in the Key of “D for Disaster.”

Time to change the radio station.

If by some of the same characteristics, they mean political opportunism, I agree. Hopefully, HIllary supporters won't succumb to the dark side.

TO ALL THE DEFECTORS

Enough of the "I was treated poorly, so I'm voting for McCain" and the rest of the drivel. It's time someone talked to you like and adult, and quite mollycoddling you. If you want to vote for McCain, fine. If you are a woman who values your reproductive rights, and you want to vote for McCain, fine. You deal with the consequenses of the new SCOTUS.

YOU were not running for president
YOU were not subjected to the media analysis (don't even bother with the unfair media junk)
YOU were the one who chose to support one candidate over the other
YOU knew that there would only be one winner in this process

If you were only voting democratic because Hillary was running, you are not a legit democrat to begin with.

If you are choosing to vote for McCain out of spite, because you believe all the BS you've been told about how unfair Hillary has been treated (it's rather telling that McCain's camp is using this exact same line as a rationale), then you were never a legit democrat.

If you are abandoning the democratic party because of what a bunch of anyonymous posters have said on a blog, you need to suck it up, get a thicker skin, deal with it, and support the democratic candidate. Your choice has stated whe will do the same; follow her example.

Please, quit throwing the tantrums and act like THINKING adults.

To quote Ed Rendell, Hillary-supporting Governor of Pennsylvania...

"Look, all of you take 10 days. Cry about it, pout about it, be disappointed, but after those 10 days, suck it up, let's get to work, because the issues that Senator Clinton fought for are the issues that Senator Obama is fighting for, and we need him to win."

Everyone here needs to remember that between now and the GE, McCain's bloggers will be assuming the guise of angry and disappointed middle-aged white women who just can't forgive Obama and/or the Democratic Party for how horribly they treated Queen Hillary.

I plan to point and laugh at them when they do. You will be able to spot by their rhetoric that they are really Republicans in Mrs. Doubtfire drag.

A wonderful idea, Hillary & McCain both voted for the war, and is deep in the pockets of lobbyist. The only difference is that Hillary wants a health plan, and McCain wants endless war....I wonder how they will pay for each? We have a trillion dollar debt, sinking economy, war in Iraq, Afganistan, and soon Iran, and Hillarys healthcare will cost another 100 billion....this is a perfect ticket!!

Dude may have not realized it, but what he just did was damn John McCain with the faintest of praise. Talk about putting a silk dress on a pig!

Awww Pawlenty... sounds like you learned to read the McCain Camp Outline just fine. Funny you saying Obama is an empty suit who reads from a teleprompter.... Guess he's one of the last people in America who hasn't read "Dreams from my Father."

As a woman but an Obama supporter, I get it to some degree about Clinton and being p.o.'d that she didn't make it all the way. But I don't think women are remotely dumb enough to fall for this. And, apparently, I'll be betting my freedom of choice on it.

I guess we do.

Signed...one of the worst Dems.

(Loyal Democratic voter and supporter since McGovern. But clearly not good, educated or affluent enough for the "New Democratic Party.")

{McCain Surrogate} "Hey Hillary supporter, sure we have a complete different tax policy, don't care about women's rights, don't even want to consider univeral health care, but hop on board. I mean that Obama had the nerve to beat Hillary in the primaries. If McCain was running against Hillary in the general, he was planning just to let her win. He has so much respect for her he wouldn't have campaigned against her at all unlike that woman hating Obama. So even though Hillary will be campaing for Obama in the fall, just ignore that and join with us your natural allies. McCain 08."

McCain/Clinton - Experienced Washington insiders who voted for a disastrous war, want to obliterate Iran, and give voters a gas tax holiday (worth a whopping $70). Is THIS the direction voters really want to travel...?
