Updated With Statement Below

In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

Obama Was Selected, Not Elected
By Ann Coulter

Share Your Comments

Words mean nothing to liberals. They say whatever will help advance their cause at the moment, switch talking points in a heartbeat, and then act indignant if anyone uses the exact same argument they were using five minutes ago.

When Gore won the popular vote in the 2000 election by half a percentage point, but lost the Electoral College -- or, for short, "the constitutionally prescribed method for choosing presidents" -- anyone who denied the sacred importance of the popular vote was either an idiot or a dangerous partisan.

But now Hillary has won the popular vote in a Democratic primary, while Obambi has won under the rules. In a spectacular turnabout, media commentators are heaping sarcasm on our plucky Hillary for imagining the "popular vote" has any relevance whatsoever.

even though you did this howard dean and nancy polosi you cost sen.hillary the presidential race....it is your fault we see where you stand now ......but remember this we will always be there for sen.hillary clinton no matter what.... we know it was your doing that you wanted obama to be the nominee........

Share comments? Okay . . . Setting aside for a moment the absurdity of advocating a Democratic candidate while citing the source you cite, I believe that this "popular vote" win you claim ignores people whose states held caucuses, people who wrote in Obama in Michigan because they weren't allowed to vote for him, etc. . . . I guess it's not as hard to win the popular vote when you decide what the popular vote is.

And if I wanted to start my morning reading something, anything, by Ann Coulter, I'd be out in the gutter with the rest of the decaying refuse. Now you've put me off my breakfast.

This women is a nut job. Any doubt these shrill supporters of hers have had of her being a "uniter" of the party just went out the window last night. She had a chance to show real courage, she failed. Like her stab at health care in '92 she failed. There should be do doubt about her "judgement on day 1" any longer. It would've sucked!

It seems to me that if the primary process had been allowed to proceed to the end without all of the hateful rhetoric we would not be in this position. Everyone should have had their vote and then the super delegates could have looked at the result and made their endorsements.

I'm old enough to remember the process ending at the convention and not having an actual nominee until then. Isn't that the way it is supposed to work? Why all the impatience, hateful name-calling and coercing candidates to quit? If the Democratic party is so weak that we couldn't have an issue-driven primary with everyone having the opportunity to vote then we are in sad shape indeed.

I don't know if Senator Clinton is going to concede or suspend, but what does it matter? She has broad support throughout the country. She won Massachusetts despite the Kennedy-Kerry endorsement of Obama; she won South Dakota despite the Daschle endorsement of Obama . This has been a very close contest and it shouldn't be ended just because the press is bored and ready to move on. We let them pick our last President and look where that got us.

Democrats should just chill out and be patient. The best candidate will win - and either of the two should be able to beat John McCain with no problem. Enough with the hate talk!

I agree. The media turns everything, no matter how minor, into a circus. There are certain pundits
who obviously have personal vendettas against Clinton, and I'm surprised no one's put a muzzle on them yet, because its cost MSNBC ton of viewers. Clinton won more votes than anyone in history, she came within less than 1% of Obama's votes. The media needs to put something into
perspective: when you have over 18 Million people vote for you, you have a lot of supporters. Clinton has at least ,if not more , supporters as Obama, and that's something Obama needs to put into perspective as well as the Democratic party. Caroline Kennedy, are you listening.
Not every democrat is a far left liberal, but they are still democrats.

I completely agree that the demonizing and over-the-top rhetoric is not helpful, and it actually seems a bit pathetic considering that the two are very close on almost every issue. I also agree that there is no issue with candidates continuing through to the end.

However, there is the practical side of 1) looking silly and 2) ending the campaign when the campaign season is over. The primaries and caucuses are done, and the delegate split is quite clear. There is no more justification for Hillary to continue her campaign based on some hope that Obama will implode (that's no more legitimate than it would be in any other contest).

Excuse me, but I thought we have a winner. And while you re-hash the states Hillary won, why not look at the states that Obama won. Oh, you should also include the caucus states, if you haven't already. We certainly don't want to disenfranchise all those folks who spent hours in their decision making efforts. Sorry, but it is time to face facts - all of them - on both sides.

So let the process continue. If he's the best candidate and he's won, what's the problem?

I refuse to allow the negatives to out weigh the historic event of the 1st Biracial AMERICAN as a Presidential candidate. For me...this is the most important occurrence in our history and the refusal of others to acknowledge it...is their loss. For those Hillary supporters and Obama supporters we need to move forward and looking back will not help us to do that. I'm ready to fight the Republicans and get out there to encourage more people to vote. For those who choose to vote for MCcain that is your right and hopefully, not a regret. Yet, it is not fair to say that Sen Obama didn't win this fairly...He worked just as hard as her and the media has attacked him as well as HRC. Also, it diminishes that just as many voters came out and voted for Sen Obama. Hypocrisy, is the word that comes to mind when I hear or read comments along those lines...but it doesn't matter. It is time to move forward and I encourage the Obama supporters to do just that. It is time for the real work to begin and we need to assist in this endeavor. We need to get more people registered and make donations. NO MORE BUSH/CHENEY in 2008. We MUST Defeat MCcain and we can without HRC supporters. Also, Sen Obama has the most popular votes.

Seeking to find a way to win over fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" members of their own caucus, House Democrats are planning to ax a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits to find a way to pay for the Iraq war.

The move comes against the wishes of the Senate: the unemployment benefit passed without incident there, with 75 senators supporting the final bill.

Does anyone acknowledge he's the "presumptive" nominee?

Does anyone acknowledge that DNC rules state SuperDels should only let their votes be known at the convention.

Go read the DNC rules on SuperDels.

Dean and Pelosi want to break their own rules now, when it serves them.

Why didn't you guys pressure Pelosi to impeach Bush?

She could have.

Should have had the support.

think about it.

Where were you, in a coma since 2006?

We did pressure Pelosi. She did not have a majority of support in the House and Senate. We gave her a majority of 1. She had no power. We were pissed off anyway, and still are in fact.

Try to keep up.

As soon as she drops out she can't raise anymore money. That's campaign rules.

Her plea for 'ideas' last night was to get her rabid fans to go to her web site where they are met with a pledge form. She doesn't give a cr@p about their ideas.

OMG. Is this the answer?! It makes totaal sense. Well damn, I'll write a check if it means the party can move on. Obama supporters pitch in $1 w/ me. Hillary supporters pitch in $10 (come on women, don't leave her hangin).

on a side note, I really don't like Charlie Rangle, he's a phoney.

Boy, pretty weak text. After C's performance last night, I confess I was pretty disappointed at her lack of class. She's really a sore loser, and I would not be surprised if she tries to launch an independent run, or at the least tries to sabotage O's run. This is despicable, and we need to be able to COUNT ON better and stronger leadership from the Democratic leadership.

I think she would run as an independent if she could get $$-the problem is she would have to fund it herself since her base is made up of poor, uneducated low income people without extra dough for political donations...

Please continue posting the list of uncommitted superdelegates. There is no reason that they need to wait any more. I do not understand why Reid is giving them until Friday. This is insulting to Obama. I want to know who to continue to contact. Until Obama gets to 2177 Clinton can still argue that she could get to the Credentials Committee to change the Michigan ruling. If Obama has 2177, he could lose the Michigan vote and it would not matter.
