In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

Where's Gore? Is he in orbit out of contact with earth??? He is a super, isn't he?

I think Al Gore is 'totally dilusional'. The man has lied so much on this Global Warming crap, that he is even starting to believe his stories he spews.........
One Sad individual. And we "Almost" elected him too, tsk, tsk!

I'm glad we weren't asleep at the wheel when this ship turned the corner.

You do know that there is complete consensus regarding everything Gore has communicated regarding global warming, right? The scientific community is quite clear about it. Even many die-hard Republicans are no longer in denial about it. You seem to be the Last of the Mohicans regarding the subject.

As for the 2000 (which Gore actually received considerably more votes in the popular vote) and 2004 election, I am pretty confident that a large swath of Americans have buyer's remorse considering Bush is now commonly considered not just a terrible president but has the distinctive honor of being considered the worst ever.

Gore lost when the DNC "party leaders" told him NOT to demand a statewide recount in FL.

Did you know that?

Did you know it was the "party leaders" who handed Bush his first term?

If Gorewopuld have demanded a statewide recount in FL he would have won.

So maybe Gore isn't ready to listen to "party leaders" this time around.

What kind of leaders are these? Three leaders cannot control one loose cannon who is just a Senator?

I've tried to feel good about Senator Clinton for the last two or three months but every time I come close to that "feel-good" attitude something like Tuesday night's speech turns me off. She and her supporters demand respect in everything they do, however she appears to refuse offering that same respect to Senator Obama and his nearly 18 million supporters.

Last night while introducing Senator Clinton to her supporters, after it was known that Barack Obama had won the Democratic nomination, Terry McAuliffe introduced Senator Clinton as to the next president of the United States. Senator Clinton, former President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton all came on stage to acknowledge the cheers of her supporters, and appropriately so. As she began her speech I listened intently to hear her congratulate Senator Obama on winning the nomination but to no avail, not once in her speech did for Senator Clinton acknowledge Senator Obama had won. She did to compliment him on running a good race but not on winning. During her entire speech the word "won" was used only in what she had done.

With the exception of saying Senator Obama had run a good race her entire speech was nothing more than another "stump speech". In my opinion last night's speech was the ultimate show of disrespect.

Then endorse, you three. Ever hear of leadership by example?

In defense of these three (listen to me; never thought I'd be saying that) I cite their roles as party leaders for their constraint endorsement-wise. In their official duties they have to appear to be above the fray. This is especially true in Rep Pelosi's case; she is chairing the convention in Denver. (That said I suspect that Dean and Pelosi like Obama a lot while Reid supports Sen Clinton.)

As for the scores of undeclared supers, I suspect they still are cowed by Clinton. (But I'm not scared anymore, folks. Erected my Obama '08 sign this morning.)

Hillary Clinton is one of the most nefarious persons I have seen to date. She doesn't have what it takes to be President of the USA. She is hateful, vendictive, mean spirited and is a sore loser. She keeps touting that she has won the most popular votes. They are nearly equal in popular votes. He has won the needed delegates to put him over the top. In a Primary popular vote doesn't get it, only the delegate count. Why would she want to be Vice President when all along she has been saying that she and McCain had what it took to be President and not Obama. She has campaigned againt Obama repeatedly in this Primary as if she were the Republican nominee. She and Bill need to go some where and rest, they both sound like they are having nervous breakdowns. They both need to put that Healtcare Insurance to work that they both have and hopefully they have insurance for people who are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. For surely that's what the both of them are acting like especially Hillary.

He so called popular vote win is padded by MIchigan where he gets to count ZERO -(was not on the ballot and still got 30,000 write in votes which she also is not counting) and padded by Limbaugh operation chaos types and by ignoring caucus states...like so much of what she says--she is lying...she could not even start her speech without a gross distortion of reality and truth--she said SOUTH DAKOTA had the last word---so what about Montana which was still voting and would report after south dakota?

Does Hillary really have an army of 18 million for her to direct at will? I rather doubt it. Many of those who voted for her in CA for example, would not have voted for her today. She has so tarnished her image. Beyond repair I would think. Her jaw-dropping lack of grace is unbelievable.

Once again we see these "leaders" saying empty words without action. Lead! For crying out loud! Make your endorsement and tell the rest to do the same. How hard it is to take a stand? If you can't do it, get out of the way and let somebody who will.

As my Grandfather used to say
"Fish stinkes from the Head"
These so called "Leaders" are a sham and should be voted out. Leaders make decisions so that others will follow "their" lead.
Sometimes I am ashamed to be called a Democrat
No wonder Hillary's people are going to GOP.
These Democrat Leaders are not leading they are WEAK.
Shame on Pelosi, Howard Dean,Gore, Harry Reid
Even Hillary is stronger than ALL four of them

Funny how they're urging fellow superdelegates to make a commitment so we can put all this behind us, yet conveniently fail to make an endorsement or state the obvious.

Congradulations! Mr. Obama for the pundits and elder DNC have given to you the Democratic Presidential nomination. Now it will be up to you to be elected to the White House. The DNC, Howard Dean, Mrs. Pelosi , Reid and the super delegates, you are all placed on notice, The American people will hold all of you accountable, if Obama does not become President and we have 4 more years of an Republlican. You decided, not all Americans decided Obama was electable. I hope Hillary is not ask to be VP, I want Obama to be on his own, let see how far he can go. We know Hillary would have been elected ,if given the opportunity to be the nominee.

You do realize that Obama would still win the nomination even if the DNC rules committee had given Hillary 100% of FL and MI with full votes?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:10 PM on 06/04/2008

Under the actual rules you should have gotten zero votes. It was all this unneeded whining that made them have that dumb meeting in the first place.

Giving you all the votes wouldn't have mattered but it would have made Barack look like a push over. There are good reasons for all of this. Believe me, Hillary is communicated and connecting with the lowest common denominator.

Like they say in poker, if after ten hands you don't know who the sucker is, it's you.

Um, I remember voting for him and against Hillary.

I'm pretty damn sure a whole lot of others did as well. Your candidate set the table, played the odds, tried to reset the table in her favor...and still lost. Her folks turned a caucus in Puerto Rico into a second New York primary, and it wasn't enough. They tried to get out of the bind HER PEOPLE CREATED in Michigan and Florida, and it wasn't enough. She rejected and insulted caucus voters, red state voters, small state voters to get at so-called bigger prizes and it wasn't enough. She pandered to racists, accepted the Limbaugh dittoheads gladly and it wasn't enough. She had feminists on her side to the end, even as she grasped the KKK vote and it STILL wasn't enough.

Inevitability met reality. And LOST.

Are you sensing a trend? Carp all you wish, it still doesn't change things.

Besides, wasn't she supposed to have all those party insiders you scream about in her back pocket? What happened there?

Hillary would never have been elected in the general. The Republicans had tons of stuff lined up to use against her. That's why they were all being so nice to her during the primary. Obama didn't use it because it was a primary and you shouldn't do permanent damage to your opponent because at some point you have to unite. The Republicans would have no such reluctance.

fyi I just got off the phone calling Obama's office and saying no VP for Hillary, after the way she acted last night it was a historic moment, and she acted so unprofessional, everybody needs to flood his office with calls, we need a VP with some foreign policy experience to go up against McCain, the Democratic Party are full of qualifed people , this a glimpse of how she would have run her Presidency, if she can't have her way, I know it was a tough loss, but she needs to move on and do wha'ts best for the party, this is not about Hillary, it's about taking this country into a new direction, I can't believe that she would hold Obama hostage to her antics, it's her way or the highway, the gall of some people, the super delegates need to get up off of their a$$$ and endorse Barcack Obama the Nominee, damn I so tired of their lousy excuses!!!!!!!

Have you been to her website lately? She's still running. Her supporters are telling her to run as an Independent and all the while MCcain is trying to woo " her voters" and she is allowing him. It's about being a bitter loser who can say I told you so. Don't ever beleive she has America's , the Democratic Party or it millions of other supporters best interest at heart. The congressmen supporters cannot even say Obama has won the nomination. They say "it appears he has crossed that threshhold" What is that? I am appalled at this tasteless, classless attempt at a power grab.

This self-centered, egotistical woman is trying to upstage a truly historical event (the 1st black candidate of a major party) and the spineless Dem leadership is allowing her to do it. no wonder that Dems very seldom win the White House.

Dems not winning the White House is only one problem. Our Democratic leaders need to start being effective legislators, too.

These situations are not easily handled. We've learned from GWB that belligerence and aggressiveness may give us a great chest puffing moment... though such behavior rarely resolves big problems. It is not spineless to carefully consider options before taking action. It is not spineless to try to help someone save face. It is good politics and good diplomacy... and we need more of it.
