In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

Reid, Pelosi & Dean are doing their best in a difficult political situation. The Dems have a majority in name only. When driving our cars we must "look long", not just at the front of the hood. Doing so would cause us to veer off the road. American public is much in need of deep education on issues... and patience.

A "difficult political situation"? You mean like Reid's kid Rory running Clinton's campaign here in Nevada?

Gimme a break. Stand and deliver folks.

That's true. And Pelosi has found her spine when it comes to telecom immunity. But they are not showing leadership in the primary where we are 100% Dems...no excuses for that.

Those SD who came out early, such as Kennedy, Dodd and Richardson to name just a few, along with Edwards two weeks ago, and any that declared for Clinton too, truly showed that they cared first and foremost about the Democratic party.

While I understand that the SD don't have to vote until the convention, after the election season was completed last night it was in the best interest of the party for all of them to cast their votes, whomever it is for, and end this farce now being played out by Clinton and her staff. Carter last night and Emanuel today did the right thing, not by necessarily voting for Obama, but just by the act of voting in itself. Those SD who remain sitting on their asses need to be removed from any position they hold within the Democratic party, they surely don't have its best interest at heart.

IMO, Pelosi, Reid, and Dean are behind the 8 ball. They now need to be working fast against the extortion by the Clintons of Obama, his voters and other supporters. They should be standing up not only because it's the right thing to do in this case, but also so that it can't continue in the future, by the Clintons or anyone else.

Pelosi, Reid, and Dean: Send a strong message this is not what the Democratic Party is about.

Supers, get off the fence. Now. How dare you be part of Hillary's diminishment of this historic moment. Sen. Obama has the delegates, he's earned the nomination... so, what's the deal? I expect the whole list of you non-pledged Supers to back someone today. I don't care who.

If this does not happen, then I will have to believe that you want the Republicans to win in Nov. You are giving McCain every advantage here to campaign with no competition. You are tying Mr. Obama's hands and creating doubt.

Show us you are serious about winning the GE in 2008 (not 2012). Show us your excitement and support of our winner, our Nominee (in case you missed the news last night, that would be Sen. Obama!)

We are quite shocked that Hillary hasn't congratulated Barack Obama, on his historical moment! Even the WHITE HOUSE issued a congratulations, this morning, to Barack!! It is a shame that Barack can receive honor from the Republican White House, but cannot receive the same from Hillary Clinton who is a fellow Democrat!! When Barack addressed AIPAC, this morning, he spoke from his heart and didn’t use a prepared speech. He said many kind words about Hillary. Hillary, didn't do the same. She used a prepared speech, without any congrats to Barack. At this point, Hillary looks like a big sore loser!!

Bush has better manners than Clinton?

The guy who sends our troops in underequipped into a war we didn't have to fight. And then inspires terrorists to come kill them.

The man in love with torture. And who hates privacy. A guy who holds hands and kisses Saudi sheiks, helping them skim billions out of our pockets in obscene fuel prices, some of which land in the coffers of al Qaeda.

HE could congratulate Obama.

But not Clinton.

That speaks volumes.

Right now there are 140 undeclared superdelegates. Obama has a 242 total delegate lead over Clinton. So, no matter what these 140 decide to do (even if they ALL went to Clinton), the outcome remains the same.

So what the hell are they waiting for? ESPECIALLY Pelosi, Reid and Dean?

And BTW, where the hell is Al Gore?

Democrats. The party that loves to lose.

Pelosi,Reed.Gore,Deen et.al
how can U not declare your support to Obama, this woman is showing the Obama supporters how weak our party is, these cable news programs are touting Hillary as if she is the presumptive nomination....also...She doesn't want to concede or embrace him until she's had a chance to sit down with him and explore what's on his mind, and her mind."
When has any other presidential candidate had conditions to force on the winner of the campaign before they would concede and congratulate the winner...what is wrong with this picture.....Not only did she try to steal Obama's thunder but attempted to belittle his hard earned victory. I have no respect for this monster. She will bring only disgrace to the ticket. Hillary have some integrity....go home let the healing begin. and by the way Mr. (presumptive)President Barak Obama ,......please stop praising Caesar

She is essentially turning into a female version of Joe Lieberman. Nancy, Harry, and Mr. Dean have to reign her in. Unless they are trying to lose this November.

After watching her speech to the A/I group this morning and her repeated references to "Our next President", without once referring to Obama's honorable victory, I have come to the conclusion she is a pathetic figure. She is driven by her over achieving ego .
The Democratic leaders should be outspoken in their support for Obama. The dems must stop this eternal pandering to the Clintons once and for all.

Did you her her speach in front of AIPAC this morning. She spoke as if she were the niminee and the next POTUS. What the hell is going on? This is bizarre. She is still campaiging but now for POTUS. How dare her disrespect Obama and the Democrats who made him the nominee. How dare her refer to the Democrats who voted for her as an armey led by her. How dare her say she will think about how to use her voters. Use the Democrat voters?! Is that what she wants to do with us. How dare rthe leadership allow her to do this. She is campaigning against Obama. She is camapiging against all Democrats. She has lost her mind.

Dear Ms. Rosen,

Those of us who have read your posts and viewed your work as a political commentator on CNN and MSNBC know that no one has been more honestly loyal and devoted to Senator Clinton and her campaign than yourself.

I share your grief concerning Senator Clinton’s choice of message to end the primary season. Many of us who had vigorously supported her prior to 2008 were deeply disappointed in her tactics during this campaign. We were hoping for a moment of redemption, where we could once again describe her to our Republican friends with affection and honor.

It was an historic evening. Senator Clinton had the opportunity to concede to that fact and in doing so become part of the history in a positive and lasting manner. She failed to recognize her moment and as a result cemented an opinion of herself in the minds of many that will be unfortunate and disparaging to say the least.

You're a class act Ms. Rosen. You’re a credit to your party and our country. Thank you for articulating what many of us felt.

I have a strong hunch that when this is all settled that the 18 million supporters Senator Clinton referred to will bear a striking resemblance to you - rather than the angry dispirited caricature that is being associated her campaign.

How about they lead by example? Unbelievably wimpy party leaders.

The more I think about it the more I can't take the thought of Hillary as VP. I also think Obama needs to shut her down NOW. Not the party (because as we continue to see, they are too wimpy to do so), but HIM. He won fair and square last night and he needs to publicly show the world HE'S in charge now, not her. Instead of all this "begging" by calling her twice and her waiting an hour to return the call. She's playing with him and the country doesn't like a wimp. He needs to show he's not.

Absolutely. I am so tired of the Dem flimsy leadership. We need to get on board, send the Clinton's away and get this general election on the road. This is our presidency to loose.

These three will suggest the VP for Obama. If Kennedy has not already named a few he will. No decision until Barack and Michelle talk it over.

She spoke at AIPAC like the winning nominee. How could this even happen? We look like fools to the rest of the country. I look to the Democratic leadrship to stop her right now. It is not eneough to tell super dleagaite to come out Pelosi, Reid need to lead by declaring right now. You cannot expect those delagates holdfing out to come out if you don't . Stop the political niggling. Put your position where your mouth is. Do it now.
