Updated With Statement Below

In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party went public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association released a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

The move, which had been anticipated but seemed unnecessary following Obama's clinching of the nomination on Tuesday night, is an indication that few figures beyond Clinton's utmost loyalists are willing to stomach a prolonged vacation period for the New York Democrat to make up her mind.

Obama, regardless of how the remainder of uncommitted officials come down, has declared the mantle of presumptive Democratic nominee. And it seems, at this point, that he is willing to put Clinton behind him in his efforts to focus on the general election match-up.

But during her speech in New York on Tuesday, Clinton offered scant indication that she was fully committed, at this juncture, to getting behind the Illinois Democrat.

"Now the question is, where do we go from here," Clinton said, "it's a question I don't take lightly. This has been a long campaign, and I will be making no decisions tonight. But this has always been your campaign, so to the 18 million people who voted for me and to our many other supporters out there of all ages, I want to hear from you. I hope you'll go to my website at HillaryClinton.com and share your thoughts with me and help in any way that you can."

Wednesday's statement by Democratic leadership seems designed to preempt any thoughts of a continued primary challenge. It declares that Democrats will be united heading towards November, and stresses the need of uncommitted superdelegates to declare their support for a candidate.

The text of the statement is as follows:

"We have come to the end of an exciting primary and caucus process - the voters have spoken. As the Democratic leaders of the Senate, House of Representatives, the Governors and the Democratic National Committee we commend all of the participants of the 2008 primary process, especially Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for making this such a transformational election. Because of the enthusiasm our candidates have inspired, our party has brought record numbers of voters to the polls, gained millions of newly registered Democrats and now has advantages in states many thought were difficult to win. We are grateful to the millions of Independents and Republicans who have crossed over to vote for a Democratic candidate for President.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.

"We once again congratulate all of the candidates for their leadership and dedication to providing this country with a New Direction. We look forward to working with them and with all Democrats to win the White House, congressional seats and state capitals so we can deliver the change the American people deserve and demand."

This woman is beyond reality. There is not a graceful bone in her body.
I am vehemently against her being Obama's VP. What in the world are "they" thinking.
Having HRC on the same ticket as Obama, resoundfully stokes the very message that he brings...
C H A N G E! HRC represents the ways of the past. Yes, the '90s were good times for the Clinton's while in the White House, but that was then, this is now. Good fortune only comes around once. HRC and Bubba have had their time, now it is Obama's turn. This is NOT the way to unite the Dem Party! Think about this long and hard.
Put the Clinton's in an ambassador's-ship position far, far away from the US and out of sight,

Democracy means you play by the rules and then the voters decide. This has been an extremely close contest, hard fought by both sides. However the rules say the nomination is won by who has the most delegates. The End.

As an Obama supporter I thought I would be excited when the final moment came and he would win. I have to tell you that I am saddened by the behavior of those bloggers who are disrespecting their candidate (Hillary or Obama) by posting spiteful and angry comments.

Last night I went to bed feeling saddened because Hillary did not congratulate Obama for winning the nomination. I am 62, female and a lifelong Democrat. and am ashamed that our Party is so divided and may lose the election because of the identity politics. If we had two white men running, we would not have this problem.

Obama and Hillary have the same platorm and care about the same issues. Why can't we rise to the occasion and unite with our eyes on the prize. This is very UNDEMOCRATIC. I am ashamed of my gender because what's happened gives credence to the stereotypical position that women can't play by the rules and won't give credit to the person who won and have the mentality "if I don't get what I want, I'm going to take my marbles and go home."

All joy of this moment is gone.

Last night I was ashamed to be a woman. Then I heard Obama's speech and I was proud to be an American.

It seems to me that the goal is for Hillary's supporters to gradually shift over to supporting Obama as their candidate. Abrupt shifts, ultimatums, threats, and immediate directives are not helpful to this goal.

Allowing superdelegates a few days to shift their commitment is consistent with this strategy and goal -- Hillary's supporters will appreciate the elbow room and respect that it shows -- this is probably a very smart way to proceed.

Remember -- the goal at this point is to keep everyone in the big tent somewhat happy and to avaoid anything that smells of humiliation. That's the way to unite the party and defeat McCain in November.

What is with Nancy Pelosi? She said that she would NOT ALLOW Hillary on the ticket with Obama. Who died and made her boss? It appears that she wants to be the highest ranking woman in politics and can't stand to think a woman could be President or Vice President unless it is her. I was proud to see a woman be Speaker of the House for the first time, but lost all respect for her when she said that impeaching Bush was off the table and would not even be considered. If any President ever qualified for being impeached, it is Bush. Unless Hillary is on the ticket with Obama, the Democratic party can kiss their chances to regain the White House goodbye. It is already TooLateAmerica.

Honestly, those who represent me who STILL back Hillary after last night's angry debacle of a speech she gave aren't getting my vote. She could have been gracious in defeat, instead she continues a fight she lost months ago.

Do you hear that Harry Reid? Shelley Berkley?

I'm sure you all have reps and senators and governors who stand by her despite the assassination calls, the race-baiting, the inability to see reality. Hillary, you ran a hard, ugly, divisive fight, but the bell rang. 3 a.m. happened and you forgot to pick up the call that says it is over. Deal with it, and deal with it now.

PS: According to CNN, Hillary's "I have experience, McCain has experience, Obama has a little speech he gave...." speech is already been turned into a Republican campaign ad and is already running in some markets.

Thanks a lot Hillary!

Harry & all -- stop the frantic Hillary for VP strong arming now. You cannot have a VP candidate that's own words are being used by the opposition to defeat you!

Lieberman is going to push McCain hard to try and get Hillary voters. This would give the Repubs the White House. It has always been the both of them against Obama. I don't see any way the Clintons campaign with enthusiasm for Obama. It's just sad.

Benne has been appointed to comment on this thread.
He talks a great deal about "democracy", but is ignoring the fact that the voters have spoken for Obama, not Hillary.

We have to give the folks who know the score, but are disappointed in the nastiness of a few Obama supporters, to think it over and make a considered decision.
They need time to process these events.

Not enough. They need to come out and say Barack Obama is the presumptive nominee and we need to get behind him, not this silly talk of super delegates making their preference known... Super delegates have fallen back into the realm of the irrelevant right now. The race is over. The party needs to acknowledge Obama no matter what Clinton decides in that regard, and they need to do this independent of Clinton's supporters.

And yet the cable news channels are broadcasting Hil'ary now, live, giving a major Middle East foreign policy speech to AIPAC.

Unless the cable channels stop covering her, they enable her backdoor bid to threaten O'bama getting the nomination. I don't care how many times she says "Senator O'bama will BE a good friend to Israel; (subtext: I AM going to be an even better friend)", when there are Haim Sabans dangling $$million$$ in front of SDs and the Dem'ocratic Convention is still months away.

The time to rejoice is when she concedes and drops out of the race. She undermines his legitimacy as THE nominee until that happens - Members of Congress who have endorsed her speaking after her speech to the cable channels are speaking about O'Bama as if he isn't the nominee, and defending her remaining in the race.

Hillary and the Republicans are working together.

The sooner she joins McCain's ticket the sooner we can get on with the battle.

Folks,
I am interested in having some solid discussion about where we need to go to get max results to get in the whitehouse. if anyone is interested, please set aside the pro Hillary and Obama partisant stuff and le's talk seriously about next steps. We need to be united if we are going to defeat the little troll. Let's stop bashing Hillary and her supporters and let's engage them as to what might be best for the party.
This is about our country and no one man or woman is bigger than that!! Please leave the negativity off this discussion, I am interested in hearing valued arguments on how we can make this work.

Hillary's is stealing money form the poor people she claims to want to help by urging them on to her site where the big DONTATE button is urging them to contribute to help her pay off her debt.
I have followed her campaign closely and much of the time what she says it not true. Not just the Bosnia story, but almost everything including the statement that she has the popular vote. She is either a chornic liar or delusional. Neither is suitable for someone in high office.

If Hillary doesn't come out an endorse today, and threatens Obama to make her VP.... He should hold a press conference and tell everyone the following:

"I've just met with Sen. Clinton to discuss how we can work together, to unify our efforts for the betterment of the Democratic Party and the country. Unfortunately that was not something Sen. Clinton was interested in. This campaign has been about changing Washington, and the back room politics. It's time to turn the page.

I will not start off my general election campaign to be the President of the United States by being strong armed into a decision I do not support. I will not appease Sen. Clinton in her efforts to force her way into the Vice Presidency, even if it means upsetting her loyal followers. I want to make it clear to everyone, that I will not be choosing Sen. Clinton for Vice President. I know many of her loyal supporters will be upset over this choice, and I will work hard to gain your support over the next few months.

I would be unfit to be the President of the United States if I did not stand up for the best interests of this country by allowing myself to be manipulated into any decision. As President I will never be strong armed into a decision that I do not feel is correct, even if it's politically convenient."

He'd gain far more support than he turned away.
